    Can’t wait for this to be a baseline across all manufacturing, globally.

      except china, ofc, you'd have to wait A LONG TIME for it, unfortunately.

    I was concerned when I heard Oscar say he researched this topic on the Internet, as this is often what other people say when they used a search engine to find statements just to support a personal bias. But as I trust Oscar's recommendations in other areas, I thought I'd give him a chance on this video too. I think he did a good job covering the issue, talking about its impact without being sensational, covered the response from the industry and legislatures to address the problem, and touched on what we can do about it. He gave a measured and reasonable response. He continues to show he is someone who gives solid advice with no nonsense or fillers. Keep up the good work, sir!

    I was just thinking about this, best way to go is organic wax for waterproofing.

      beeswax or what? Because the paraffin wax is just a petrol production by-product.
      Is it breathable ?

      It works but stay away from open flames. You are essentially making your gear into a firestarter.

      Depends, the more you put on, the more water resistant and the less breathable it gets. It just depends on to what degree you want to treat your gear. But if you want to make something completely water resistant for hours at a time, than it will barely be breathable at all.

    Thanks, no more gore tex rain jackets for me. I am looking into LightHeartGear PFAS free rain jackets.
    I find that gore tex jackets are not good use near the equator. (humid + wet + hot environments like Japan summer)
    gore tex jackets can only do 1 and not both. Breathe or repel water, never both

    • @WoodswomanWrites
      @WoodswomanWrites 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I love my LightHeart raingear, good choice! I've used both the rainjacket and rainpants for several years. While the fabric doesn't breathe the way the jackets with PFAS do, it is 100% waterproof unlike all the breathable fabrics that eventually have rain soak through.

    Great video, people usually think about things like durability, quality, functionality when it comes to buying outdoor gear, but this should definitely be added to that list. Thanks for highlighting it 👏

    This is a good start for educating oneself on the PFAS issue, but the problem is much, much broader than what is obvious at the beginning. PFAS legislation only considered an insignificant number, four at the moment, of the 15,000 chemical compounds that fall in the PFAS category. There's is much more work to do on identifying the actual risks, causations and not correlations, and identifying the huge number of actual chemical compound that compose a risk. By the way, new GoreTex is now free of the listed PFAS chemicals, but there is no assurance some currently unlisted chemicals are present and those chemicals could be used in any "natural" fiber clothing manufacturing process. This is a Gordoan knot kind of problem.

    I’m also a bit concerned about microplastics in our drinking water. I’ve seen many articles on this lately. I avoid bottled water at home but I see it’s even in our filtered tap water.

      Microplastics only make up 0.5% of your brain by weight. Plenty of room for more! Or maybe that's my microplastics talking.

    Thank you for posting this video, very important to get the word out!
    My other concern is microplastics in general, which linked to all sorts of health and reproductive issues. The concern is having our baselayers be plastic means when we sweat we get absorption through the skin. This is a big concern in activewear in general, the whole industry is toxic from this fact. I'm slowly replacing my clothing with natural fibres but not sure what to do with hiking base layers.
