Just an FYI for those watching....The guitar being restored here is a 1936 Gibson L-50. The factory order number is stamped 725B and the guitar's individual number in the batch is the 27 written in red pencil. These were "student model" guitars and Gibson did not give them serial numbers.

Big Boss was in the Shop I see. The soundboard braces are interesting, using a kerf to help speed up fitting is a neat idea, seems they held up quite well over the years. Looks like attention to detail was important given the thin re-enforcement on the top of the brace as well. Great information in this video. Thanks!

Thanks for watching! I'm glad you liked it. Obviously gibson would have leveled the tops of all of the kerfs before gluing on that top strip. I forgot to mention that.

Hi, I see the same with the parallel braces in a 1952 L-48 that I am repairing. your video is spot on.
What about the back? the one I have does not have any braces on the carved back. I do not see any evidence that it had those braces on the back at all. Do you think the one you have was altered at some point with the added braces both the center brace and the cross braces? Do you think its a good Idea to add the cross braces to the back?

The L-48 only very rarely had a carved back and only very early on. By 1952 it would have certainly been a laminated, pressed back.

@@ChuckNicholsonTRM I looked very close at the back and it is laminated. Thanks

Nice series, it's always interestin to look under a hand working with old instrument.
Those kerfing is most probably what Ken Parker mentioned in his lecture "Ken Parker: The History and Evolution of the Archtop Guitar" - there's a video on youtube (th-cam.com/video/hHzmCw-bS0k/w-d-xo.html). I'm not familiar with archtop guitars, but seems that all that un-allighed braaces and kerfing is just sighns of construction speed, not quality... But I could be extremely wrong )
Nevertheless, old instrument its always something good.

I am not sure about the alignment, but the kerfing of the braces was most certainly done for speed, not quality. Thank you for your comment.
