I was watching some guy building a Hercules single cylinder engine out of an airplane cylinder. Pretty trippy set up too. Piston went up and down as did a sleeve in side the cylinder that was like a 2 stroke allowing fuel in and gases out.
Head is threaded on, but not meant to be removed once it's installed. Might not be removable without damaging the head. My dad was an aircraft mechanic. He used to hone cylinders without taking the head off, used a drill press to do it, set the stop on the drill press to keep from bumping into the head.
Greetings Tatro, That is going to be a one fancy motorcycle engine, I bet it`s going to haul ass with the stroke, displacement, and compression ratio, do you have a horsepower goal in mind? My Da used to overhaul airplane engines during the war, and he would talk about doing stuff like this for grins.
Aircraft piston engines like these usually do not run any faster than 3650 rpm, propellors start exceeding the speed of sound at speeds faster than that. There are exceptions--usually they are geared to run the propellor at a slower speed than the engine, but they are rare in civil aviation, and they have shorter TBO's (time before overhaul).
any motor can turn over 7000rpm. every motor i have will do that. flatheads, panheads, shovels, sportsters. stock strokes upto 5", they all rev high if you build them that way. i don't care what the faa, dot or epa say, i build what i want and if it blows, oh well. at least i am having fun. tatro
Hell yeah!!! I've been hoping you'd get that Harmon motor running but this is even more wild

That would be a mean looking engine WOW.

a horsepower per inch is a good starting point and than you add the turbo.

LOL... Wild.
Exhaust valve may be bigger because it might be sodium cooled. Be careful cutting on one.
not likely i will be using any of the stock parts.

173ci thru 201ci or i can go real big at 230ci. what size would you go with.

@@TatroMachine well my dad always said, theres no replacement for displacement. i cant wait to see this thing in action
hey wow what brand of aircraft engine cylinders i use to watch them land there engines sound sweet
its in the tile.
tatro
I for some reason remember hearing that before ,definitely doubled check your application , but tattro wouldn't make that mistake
now what did i do.
tatro
Put it on the sportster drag bike
that is a landspeed race bike. i like more seat time and freedom to build what i want.
tatro
Lyman?
the title says what they are.
tatro
