It's extremely disingenuous and not the least bit insulting to reduce this man's talent and success to the now extremely tired trope of "russian trolls". Because yes, it must absolutely be mostly trolls that make up that view count, absolutely none of them have been real people in countries other than the United States, and of course, none of them are selling out tickets to see him in real life because the message in his music is so genuine and resonates so well with all of us that still have a brain and functioning heart. Christ almighty the level of cognitive dissonance required to see Russian trolls everywhere is almost unbelievable.

Oliver Anthony points out that the conflict isn't between Political Party Brand A versus Political Party Brand B. The true conflict is the establishment at war against the taxpayers. This piece resonates with all walks and across the political spectrum.

Perhaps it may clear up any misunderstanding to know that his reference to being obese was not "fat-bashing", rather he was explaining that there are many people in the US that take advantage of the welfare system while so many others who need help are unable to get basic necessities such as food and shelter. The lyrics, "Taxes ought not to pay for your bag of fudge rounds" speaks to this very problem. Thank you for sharing and shining!

I am a Marine: not under contract, slaving my ass away just to come home and drink the shitty day away, praying to God that I make it through the next day, and that my life has purpose to make those I work with have a better, happier day while I don't succumb to the absolute misery of my work environment. It is a struggle, daily. But as a Christian, this is our command by God and our duty. If we are encompassed by the Holy Spirit, we are to be the light to others. Believe me, it is an absolute struggle for us. But when you go home knowing that you made lives better, YOU will feel better, and uplifted. Please try tomorrow, and every day after, uplifting those around you instead of selfishly pouting and raging out. Making folks happy will make you happy. Making folks miserable will make you miserable.

  • @mattijohansen3471
    @mattijohansen3471 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

When I first heard this. One of the things that really dragged me in was just the recording.
He is just singing in the woods. You can hear the sound travel. You can hear the insects.
Its really something honest. So much music today is so produced, and layered its impossible to say where any of it comes from.
And that really had me right from the start.
The lyrics also has many.. its well written. The lyrics tries to be smart, dancing around topics that can be tricky.
Also why some of them have been misunderstood.
Like the Rich men north of Richmond. Because Richmond used to be the capital of the Southern states in the American civil war.
See I dont know if that plays a role in him choosing this line. But thinking about it I just feel he used it for the word play it is, Rich Men. Richmond. and The politicians is all up north from there.
But it does leave the ability for people to wonder.
Same with him talking about obese. Is he saying its a shame that people who really suffer, being homeless ( Something the US suffers under, having more homeless people than any developed nation in the world ) is not getting the help they should. While people who has wealth, and the ability to eat and a home gets bailed out by the state. And the richer you are, the more help you get. Because the US is also the country with most corruption among the developed nations.
Or does he mean that obese people are just dragging the state down, and instead of spending the economy on such things it, it should be used elsewhere.
It can be understood in both ways. And he does not really clarify in the song one way or the other, again leaving it up to people to gather the meaning they hear.
I hope its the first. Because I agree its a damn shame, that the rich gets more and more from the state, while people suffering and being sick, living on the street gets nothing but the end of a police stick.
If its an attack on obese people, I dont really like it. Sure there are problems with it, that has to do with the state, and how we learn to consume food, what we learn to ease, and ease of access to food. That should be improved. But to just make the claim obese people are a burden to the welfare system, is something that is more harmful than helpful.

    • @sanzalure6091
      @sanzalure6091 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I do not think think this song is against welfare or against obese people. First Oliver talks about people on the streets having nothing to eat (and no welfare since no address), second he talks about the cheaters milking welfare and third he talks about young people ending their lives because they're tired of being kicked down. You can't take the second part out of the first and third without changing the meaning of the whole thing.
This song is about the cheaters at the top and the cheaters at the bottom, both of them sucking the life out of people like you and people like me.
In my opinion the song has nothing to do with the left or the right, it is about the unfairness of the rich men getting all the wealth while those people who produce this wealth get none of it.
The left is supposed to be the political party that defends the poor against the rich. Since the Democrats regularly defend the rich against the poor, we can conclude that there is nothing left of the left in the Democrat party.

Food stamps is an absolutely broken, exploited system and this is knowledge that is readily available to lower working class people as they'll know of many first hand examples of both its exploitation and failure to actually serve any potential reasonable application. I worked at a grocery store starting at 16 that did most of its business in food stamps and the vast majority of families had more money for groceries than my working class family ever had. When my stepdad got cancer and couldn't work, my family was denied food stamps and then just a few years later, I see obese people spending an obscene amount of money of buggies full of junk (and not just a couple of people, but most of the people who had food stamps). And then I'd carry out these groceries to brand new Cadillacs, see people selling their food stamps at 50 cent to the dollar or to buy drugs and buying beer and tobacco with the "cash" version of their food stamps. And then after seeing this completely unfair, arbitrary application of welfare I got a further taste when my friends eighty something year old grandmother was given $25 a month when she was a woman who'd worked in the mills all her life even well past the age of retirement. Welfare is nothing more than a way for the state to create dependent, docile people which is why they wont help the working class and people with too much pride to become dependent on the states teet (or too old). This is what he's speaking on, hence the comparison between the situation of the homeless and those who abuse the food stamp system.

@@AcidAdventurer That is what YOU think he means. Neither of us speak for him.
But also, what I hear is a failed system, as so often with the US.
The corrupt system, that does not work is at fault.
As with so many things in the US, bad systems are in place that waste money, because doing better things is not getting done.
Often because companies pay politicians not to have them done.
But you should put your energy into hating on the system. Because its the system and not the people who create the issues you have with it.
The people have no power to stop it, or change it. Its not their fault its there, or that it does not work. Its the government, and how public poltics is generally done in the US.
There is a reason, despite on paper having so much money, still is the nation in the developed world with most corruption, most homeless people, places with more poverty than 3 world countries, including lack of electricity and water.
UN have deemed certain places in the US, worse than African war zones in terms of living standards.
Dont blame the people. blame the system who have all the tools to fix these things. But does not.

@@AcidAdventurer Thank you for sharing this.
Clearly there are honest people who don't abuse welfare.
But we're not talking about them, and Oliver Anthony is also not taking about them.
People who abuse welfare often use those who don't as a shield to hide their misconduct.
They are the ones this song is talking about.

Obesity is definitely not something to glamorise and ‘accept’ by any means. I love humans and I want them all to be healthy. It’s just that I really think it’s an issue to be solved with love and encouragement. Pointing the finger at any civilian who is struggling is unhelpful, obese people are also struggling with stuff! Otherwise they probably wouldn’t be obese. 💜

@@TheFairyVoiceMother He is not pointing the finger at any civilian. He is making a point at how we waste money going to the obese. He is stating that we shouldn't pay for them to be sick and unhealthy while others have no food at all. I would agree with you if he called fat/obese people names or demeaned them directly. We can all be kind, but that does not mean we ignore systemic problems that make situations worse. Sad to see the damage done to you when you were young, but this is not the same thing. I hope you find a way to deal with your hurt and anger for the fat shaming you experienced. Even this discussion shows the value of his lyrics. We need to support the obese in health, not in sickness.❤

Speaking as someone that used to be pretty obese, I can tell you that the way we talk about it does matter and I vehemently dislike either extreme when it comes to "fat discourse". Practically speaking, no amount of shame or guilt or telling someone they cost the medical system too much is going to force most overweight people into a gym, it may keep them away because of fear of judgment (whether real or perceived). I think for a select few that approach works, but it also leads to some pretty toxic attitudes based on some of the people I've been around. I think Overeating is inherently self-destructive, in the same way that alcohol abuse is, and some people tend to view both those things with a rather unsympathetic stance. I don't believe that "fat acceptance" is the answer, but neither is shit-talking the overweight. I sought therapy the year before I started losing weight, I honestly doubt I'd have ever gotten in shape if I didn't have someone compassionate help me get me on the right track. It's a complicated issue, because you have the objective medical facts, of course, (facts I was super well aware of as a biology major at the time), but people themselves don't change at a moment's notice due to empirical evidence, because we're all somewhat irrational when it comes to decision making, even if we don't like to admit it.

Back when the speed limit was 55mph it took more than a day. Now that it's 70 to 80 depending on where you are driving, it's still all damn day. Only you Aussies can really understand. Texans commute 70 - 100 miles each way to work without thinking about it. It's what you do for a good job.

His appeal, at least to me, has little to do with musical, technical talent. He's really good, for an AVERAGE guy, which is part of why we relate to him. He's the best guy at karaoke, easily, but he's still not a show stopping talent. But he has so much passion in his music about a subject we agree with, that we can't help but love him.

Your “reaction” videos (aka examining a song from the perspective of a trained vocalist) are absolutely next-level. If we were to create a comparison of your skills at this we would unequivocally say they are at a Dimash level. Of course there are many very knowledgeable vocal pros doing something similar to what you do, but very few do it in such a captivating way that will leave non-vocalists (and non-musicians even) completely entranced and going away actually more knowledgeable about every aspect of a song and music in general. You have an absolute gift!

Thank you once again, my Fairy Voice Mommy, for the enlightenment of the nuances of the performance for a song that I have been listening to since it first came on the scene. As far as "fat shaming", I really do not think that was close to his intent... I believe (especially since hearing several interviews with him) that he was railing against the "system" that has entrapped people to fall into a habit of eating poorly and continuing to gain weight due to everything being given to you without having to work for it (the US welfare system policies result in this). I think that this song and it's performance hits to the heart and soul of many hard working people in the US and we can align with the sentiment espoused therein. Thank you for bringing this and I encourage you to check out more form this artist.

    • @AnneSmith-lr7cp

Welfare shaming is as bad as fat shaming. Welfare is not generous and certainly not the cause of people being fat, well not in the way that you are suggesting.
Poor people have weight problems because the corporatisation of food means that fresh and healthy foods are ridiculously expensive while fast food is not. Fresh and healthy food is also less easily accessible.
It's playing into the hands of those causing all these problems and profiting from them to ignore their role and simply blame the most vulnerable for the problems of others who feel vulnerable.
And until people start punching up rather than down, nothing will change.
People on welfare are not the enemy of working people, the billionaires and corporates pushing for profit over everything else are the enemy of both.

Well, FVM, this is certainly not the usual type of performance reviewed by you, that's for sure. I am American, and he is a hero for the people here because, like other people all over the world, we are being taxed to death for ridiculous spending that makes little or no sense. As for his weight lyric, we know that some tax money must be spent on necessary food to help citizens survive. However, Fudge Rounds are a candy that is neither a necessity nor nutritious. Some of the folks on welfare here are not concerned with managing their weight nor staying healthy. Some would eat free candy until they explode, figuratively. We don't think our tax money should be spent for this purpose when other folks don't get enough healthy food that they desperately need. It's a criticism of the government welfare program, not of the recipients themselves.
