I started public speaking at events & conferences when I was 16 because my mom MADE me go to a public speaking class because she said she saw that gift in me. She came to every speaking event of mine. At 28, I’ve lost count of the events I’ve done, I get asked to travel & speak, and all because of my mom. She saw a gift in me & called it out. I will always appreciate her for being my biggest advocate and fan.

My mother used to tell me that “you have to live to work and work to live.” I never subscribed to that. And that pissed her off and it pissed her off that I was chasing my dreams. Then I had to realize she was from a different time. Struggling was heavy in her mindset where for me it’s thriving. Fast forward to 2014 when I got discovered by HBO for writing and she finally got it. She realized that success has many avenues and I found mine. Now? She says “don’t live to survive. Build a life where you thrive.”

Brittani Delaine-Walker ehh. Not really. Her words were based on you have to struggle to survive. Pay check to pay check roots. We weren’t put here to work miserable jobs to get by. True. Some paths are harder than others. But life is to be enjoyed and expound upon. That’s where my roots are based. Live to be happy, work doing what you love.

@@bdw7254 No you said damn near nothing correct. You don't get to tell someone how they got where they are, or disagree with what took them there, lol. Who are you?
No, their mother was not right, and it's a fantastic anecdote on a parent unwilling to accept a different frame of mind/perspective than their own until their child finds success with it.
What's comical is your response falls in line with a mother who can't admit she was wrong, but instead has to twist her wrongness into somehow being right all along. I'm glad his mother wasn't like that, and could admit in the end she was wrong.
Also, I'm not sure why this has become so prevalent, especially in our communities, but saying, "I said what I said," or " I didn't say anything incorrect" when challenged for saying something silly or wrong, is not a counter argument or actual response with substance.
Please learn how to backup your stances or ideas, or save us the trouble of being exposed to them.

"When you come up with your people".. This is not even the arts of business or careers, this is life. When you have people that were ride-or-die when you had nothing and nobody, and you are reaping rewards now....
The people who were there when nobody thought you would ever be anything, when most people who were literally laughing (not in a comedy-club way) at your plans and your ideas. Now "You get it, you get it, you get it." ...
You drove three hours to come be the only person there when I got back from 18 months in Afghanistan, when my own momma was too busy? Now "you get it."
You were the only person that came over to the house to help me with dad in his last days? Now "you get it."
But most people will just bail on you in hard times and come sniffin' back around after you have a name, talkin' 'bout "hey, remember that time"... Yeah, mf. I DO remember...

Patrice O'Neal said it best. "Funny people should just be left to try and be funny"(or something close to that). The issue is when you start trying to bring in people who do not operate within the realm of funny. They just can't get it or understand the culture so they come in judging everything from a place of either feelings, politics, etc, when comedy can't really be judged fairly like that.

Man i remember an interview he did about hollywood's insistance of making strong black rolemodels wear women's clothing or full on body-suits. THAT shit put a lot into perspective for me.
Not only did he point out something i hadnt even concidered, but he showed a strength of character you don't often see in hollywood.
He broke that down like he was spitting acid.

I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years now (with a multi-year break in the middle) and only in the past few years did I realize that the musicians that I like do things their own way. They may be influenced by others, but their sound is their own and the music they write is in their own voice. And maybe it's just because playing is a hobby I do for fun and I don't write my own music that it's taken me so long to realize this. With certain bands you hear the evolution album to album as they shape their sound and if a member leaves and a new one comes in, the sound can change because the band is getting new input in the creative process. But my point is that I spent so many years trying to emulate someone's sound and only now do I understand that they're not chasing someone else's sound. They're chasing their own sound. They're constantly tweaking settings or trying new guitars or bringing in new influences, but it's still all done in their voice for how they like to do things and what they like to play.

@Megara Lyons Death Metal will, by definition, never be a "household name" even the BIGGEST names in the genre. People don't know Napalm Death and Cannibal Corpse members' names. As for black people in metal though, Ice-T has a metal band that's primarily black; Body Count. Not DEATH metal, but it's still metal. Also Tosin Abasi is a well-known and well-respected black guitarist from the band Animals As Leaders. There are also a lot of Asians who get into rock and metal. One of my favorites is Chthonic, a band from Taiwan that gets into some real shit. They're fucking awesome. There's also Mongolian metal that includes throat singing - check out Tengger Calvary - War Horse.
But absolutely NO death metal band is a household name; so keep it within reason. Metalheads are keeping a finger on the pulse of the metal scenes popping up in African countries like Botswana. Wrust is [or at least was] a death metal band from Botswana - look up Hate Em All. There's also Middle Eastern extreme metal that gets a large following, like Melechesh, and lighter metal from the same areas like Myrath and Orphaned Land. I even saw Orphaned Land live when they came to my area in Texas, and there was a decent sized crowd [when you consider metal isn't pop and thus doesn't bring in numbers like Justin Bieber or Twenty One Pilots would]. There's also an Indian metal group called Bloodywood that's solid as hell. And there's an all-female band called Matriarch from Puerto Rico that was fucking awesome, too [look up their song Sinful Decadance]. Sheperds Reign is a Polynesian metal band [Le Manu is pretty cool].
There are also plenty of women in metal, too - Tatiana from Jinjer, Som from Cerebral Bore and Your Chance To Die, Angela from Arch Enemy, Alissa from The Agonist [and later took over vocal duties for Angela], Chthonic has a female basist, Babymetal is fronted by young women, Candice did vocals for Eths for a while, Otep has a female lead vocalist, Kittie is an all-female metal group, Oceans of Slumber has a woc lead vocalist, Rage of Light has a woc vocalist [she also fronts/has fronted a handful of other bands like Ad Infinitum]

Here's the thing about this speech and its content. To me it's weird to hear people marvel at what he said. That it's a breath of fresh air that it's good to hear people still having these good values. To me this should be the norm like it is for me. I've been raised as a mix of a black mom and white dad. I know what real racism is. Not this panszy ass you get in the states real racism yet i don't let it run my world. As long as I keep the values I've been given by my parents and teach them to my kids... To be respectful, to be honest, to help one another without wanting anything in return, to be better every single day and to not be sour against the bad things that happen and the people left or right of the spectrum trying to pull you down. To have that should be something everyone should have. But to hear people marvel at his words although I'm glad someone in his postion still has that is some what troubling
