I've returned to WoW since quitting after TBC, I've been impressed by how the game has progressed through the different expansions. Pandaria was so refreshing and colourful and with the changes in using cutscenes and the opening scenarios at the start of WoD and Legion its like s great adventure game. Legion has totally blown me away, going to the Maelstrom with Thrall and getting Doomhammer was great and I really feel like the game is now treating you as a hero. Level 105 atm and looking forward to the rest.

I started playing WoW at the end of WoD. A few month before the Release of Legion, so Legion was the First expansion i fully expierienced, only played on wotlk private servers before. Legion was awesome and i enjoyed WoW so much, but i wasnt able to geht into BfA. I played at the release, and a few weeks after i stopped logging on on a regular basis. And if i log on nowadays i dont know where to start and everything feels so exhausting. I think about looking more into classic.

My wow journey is exactly the same as yours. I loved legion, it was a very solid expansion, especially for PvE. M+ was an awesome addition, the story and zones were top notch and the mage tower was a great challenge. But of course it also had its flaws. I didn't like the class design / pruning, it left me with only 2 classes that I enjoyed. The removal of pvp gear vendors also made me lose that 'wow pvp' feeling that I had in wotlk and wod. These 2 things are still problems for me to this day, so I hope shadowlands will take a small step towards better class design and pvp vendors :)

I started playing in early WotLK. While in general i love WoW (probably because i play on and off, so I tend to skip the most tedious parts), Legion was a different beast. Every single spec felt like a different class which was amazing, every class had its own story, thus not only making you want to level them all so you can see the story, but also making it a new experience every time, even if the zones were the same. As soon as you got your good legendaries, you were unstoppable. I've been maining a DK since 2012, and I can tell without a doubt that Legion was the best version for me. Blood was the unstoppable juggernaut towering above all other tanks in M+, unholy had some of the strongest raid/dungeon damage, with an actually decent rotation. Class halls were quite good, even though they could have been better, and let's not forget the mage tower. Another reason to level all your alts. Speaking of alts, i was playing 7 characters in 7.3, as opposed to 1-2 in 8.3. Raids were on point both in terms of artwork and gameplay, with Gul'Dan being a very personal fight (For Varian!) and Velen's arc from ToS and onwards was pretty nice as well. Suramar was magnificent, even though it was a bit long imo, but every single zone was gorgeous and fun to quest/ be in. Legion also introduced to the game some of my favorite soundtracks. With the only complain being the AP grind being seperate for each spec, I think that Legion was absolutely amazing, and it will be a long time until it can feel this good for me again. 9.5/10, for the AP grind mentioned above. Legos were only frustrating until you had them, then the fun began! Love your series btw! Excellent background noise while I am at work and great production value!

Plenty of people have said this already but not only were only Nightborne, Void Elf, Lightforged, and Highmountain actually available during Legion’s lifespan, they were actually a Battle for Azeroth feature that was made available early as a preorder bonus after the final Legion patch. They can’t in good faith be called a Legion feature by any stretch of the imagination, especially since their entire existence is themed around the horde and alliance gathering new allies for a big faction war expansion. It does BFA a discredit on one of the only features it did well to give them to Legion.

  • @Da5eK
    @Da5eK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As someone who has mained a hunter from Vanilla to Legion, it was eye-opening to me how poor class design decisions could ruin a whole expansion for me.
The hunter class has gone through a lot of changes over the years, but has mostly maintained a similar feel to it throughout it.
Not anymore. The completely unnecessary class overhaul and pruning that the hunter received has basically ended my motivation to play the game anymore.
Beastmastery changes while flavorful, turned it into one of the most brain dead specs of any class of any expansion to date.
Marksmanship, which was praised at the end of WoD for its playstyle, was now completely changed into an RNG pray to the gods spam fiesta.
Survival was then turned into melee, which means that anyone that has rolled a hunter because it was exclusively a ranged class, has now lost a whole spec forever. The spec added nothing to raiding that other melee classes already didn't bring, the melee was already pretty undesirable at this point anyway, and time and time again it had the lowest representation of any spec to this day.
By the time Legion development started, they had over a decade of class design experience. It boggles my mind that they couldn't just look into their previous successes from different expansions and created something most people would've liked, instead of making boneheaded overhauls that just ended up being another mess that they need to mop up in the next expansion.
If you were in the alpha/beta for Legion and also participated on the alpha/beta feedback forums at the time, you should know just the amount of facepalming that was happening with every decision the devs had made.
While WoD was not a great expansion by any means, the class design and raids at least were not bad.
After that I was not going to allow myself to get hyped for the next expansion, and I was still let down more than I thought possible.

I played WoW up until late WotLK and only temporarily returned in Cata and MOP, completely dodged WOD after hearing all the shit about it.
But Legion was the first time I'd come back to WoW and really stuck with it for a good few months. I gotta say, there were a lot of awesome things in it. How each zone had it's own interesting storyline, Suramar and its withered trials and espionage in the city. I felt the story was pretty good even if it fell off in end game.

Nice video, it brings back some memory.
Let me share happened with my wife and with me during Legion. I remember we logged on every morning before work to do some dailies for the AP, as we needed the AP level for weapons to progress in mythic raiding. After fiinishing raid almost midnight, we still went to farm AP, because it was ridiculously important. And mythic+ all weekend of course. We quit the game in nighthold, i think at 6 or 7/10 maybe, both burned out. Everyone remembers Legion how good it was, i think people say that only because how bad BFA is. Just a few item to remember why i consider it wasn't that good:
-random legendaries: a few player had 3-4 dropped while others did not have a single one. Best RNG ever. I had a DH clan mate who had 3 legendaries on main and 2 on alt the time i got my first... Also remember when a legendary dropped and it was Sephuz/Prydaz, while your BiS legendary could give you 10%+ dmg increase.
-dailies: as i remember (correct me if i'm wrong, it was a long time ago) you had lots of dailies to do
-AP: as stated earlier, way to many farm for Artifact weapons, and the talents you unlocked were waay to important
    - One of your withered is running away! - same as Vision, maybe even more annoying
-PVP: no pvp vendor, no rewarding. On one hand, i agree that not the gear should decide the outcome of e.g. an arena match, but not having any reward for doing pvp kills the motivation.

  • @Wepospalient
    @Wepospalient 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Probably a hot take, but I think Legion is massively overrated. It had some good stuff, Mythic + in legion was a great time, still remember getting my first +15 with some friends. It had some good raids. Nighthold is one of my all time favorite wow raids, and tomb of sargeras was pretty good too. Suramar and withered army trainining were interesting and fun. Having different ways to unlock new artifact skins was a cool idea for progression. Legion invasions were an interesting idea but mostly just amounted to more world quests.
It also had a lot of downsides, many of which we're still dealing with in BFA. Boring artifact grinds that don't feel rewarding. Remember when you got exalted with a faction and you could buy all the goodies? Now we've locked a bunch of the rep goodies behind lootboxes, have fun grinding rep an extra 6 months! Do you not like having to grind dailies every day? Introducing world quests! They're just dailies but shittier and theres 10x more of them to complete every day! Class design took a major hit as well. This was when ability pruning REALLY began to kick in, with most classes losing many abilities and basically just amounting to a very basic rotation and some cooldowns. I think that while MoP/WoD had some of the best class design in wow, Legion had some of the worst. I stopped playing most of my classes just because they werent fun anymore. Hunter had a 3 button rotation, deathknight lost all it's runes and now just had deathrunes by default in addition to losing a ton of cool DK abilities. Shaman was no longer about managing cooldowns and totems, but just building maelstrom then dumping maelstrom, nothing else. Legendaries were a cool idea in theory but ended up in a lot of frustration with players, and a lot of legendaries were so good that your class was just flat out crap without them. There were long content draughts too, 7.2 had about an hour's worth of content that they stretched over 7 or 8 weeks. I remember being really pissed when 7.2 came out cause I just flat out ran out of things to do with my first hour of the patch being out. 7.3 was a massive disappointment with the draenei homeworld being effectively just another big green and black zone with demons. Boring and unfun world quests, tedious rep and item grinds, and top it out with a really underwhelming raid in Antorus and 7.3 is just not a great patch.
Overall I think of legion as a pretty mediocre expansion and it ranks pretty low on my list, I think the things it did do right are often overstated because of how much of a hate boner many people had for WoD.

I remember people complained a lot during the prepatch on how stale and boring many specs felt, and while many did become quite decent with artifacts and legendaries, it was overall a significant pruning compared to even WoD and really the start of the BfA class decline (BfA is essentially Legion without artifacts/legendaries, a bit more pruning/dumbing down, and the horrible GCD change).

Sub rogues were pretty insane on release, they could easily burst you down during a single full kidney shot, frost mages could one shot you with glacial spikes, if you ran into a fury warrior and frost dk and didn't know what you were getting into you got instantly deleted by frostwyrm's fury with the warrior doing ramp + reckless abandon + ramp + odyn's fury combo into a dragon's roar, some of the burst potential was absolutely insane even in arenas because of the way your gealed scaled on lower item levels, but honestly it was kind of hilarious seeing myself being gripped by a dk, charged by a warrior and seeing my hp go from 100-0 in literal nanoseconds as the angry warrior spins around while a giant frostwyrm runs me over with a hailstorm

It is really hard to believe we will soon be two expansions past Legion- and I never honestly believed way back after beating TBC that we'd ever get Demon Hunters or a true end to the demon conflict in the MMO.
To this day that reveal trailer still is shocking - it really played out like a wish list of previous theories and mock-up expansion ideas, and it actually happened. And the zones themselves were nearly this perfect blend of a multitude of old favorites, at least for me- a new spin on Mulgore, Howling Fjord/Grizzly Hills, Night Elf Zones, Eversong. In a really weird way it felt very 'conclusive' ( that and the story stakes/ending cinematic), as if this could have been Warcraft's final chapter.

Speaking about demon hunters only having two specs it makes me curious if blizzard will ever consider a spec pruning. Like some classes have nothing but dps specs. These specs do indeed create differing playstyles with certain classes, but wouldn't it be possible to merge a few of them together so that a single spec could have multiple playstyles or could at least have a mixture of two other playstyles in order to make it easier to balance the specs and also potentially make room for those classes to get specs for roles they might not have had originally? Think of a rogue having a sort of chemist spec where you can throw potions and various other chemical concoctions that could potentially buff your allies and heal them or debuff your enemies or a warrior who has a medic spec that allows them to do some healing on the field, but in a way where they are right in on the action. Imagine having to go into melee range to apply first aid on an ally, but you have a kit that warps you to the ally fast as to get around the issue of high mobility fights and the heal itself does a big initial heal and then a medium heal over time to account for downtime between dashing to other allies.

I am not going to lie I enjoyed Legion so much, in many ways it saved WoW, BFA was okay and I am looking forward to BC servers. I just felt it was the right balance of content for casual (dailies, ECT...) And hardcore players (Mythic raids and Mythic +).
The zones for world PvP were. Nice touch. I am curious about shadowland but we shall see.

I didn't, and still don't, like Legion very much. To me, it was just WoD 2.0; another expansion that gave us a slew of single-expansion novelties that we'd never see or touch once we'd gone on to the next yet play a substantial role in this one, and more of Blizzard trying to 'fix what isn't broken'. Still, your video offers someone like me more of an insight as to why some people rave about it, and for that I thank you.

Ah yes mage tower appearances the best of the "should of done it while you had the chance" and my favourite part is the sheer volume of them that were impossible (at launch) without specific legendaries.
Such a great system seeing the thing you played your spec for be removed (And we never got a solid date on WHEN this was being removed adding further confusion and losing many players slots to get it)
I have a love hate relationship with the mage tower of legion, but at least i know that the few i completed we done pre "Everyone is broken now have fun".

My impression from Legion on launch was "Oh shit demons invading the entire world, we will have to fight to survive against ovewhelming odds"
Aaand then it turned out that demons can't be arsed to attack anywhere outside of fokken isles.
I was also hoping that with return of the Burning Legion they'll do something with Outland, give it a little Cata-style update. Nope.
You know, now that i think about it the reason i stopped playing WoW is because each new expansion is so completely self-contained. Unlike, say, Runescape where Jagex actually managed to integrate even the most simple and low-level of activities into endgame somehow, in addition to making the game more "wide" rather than "tall" with each new content patch.

I've had the most fun in WoW in WotLK, when I started, and then again in Legion. Great times online. I also played through Cata and WoD with rading and social etc but them just wasn't it. Then BfA happened, and I still haven't bought Shadowlands, first time ever not giving it a go in a new expansion.

Legion was a big change indeed, the first expansion I have not played in, and that is 100% on Blizzard and the failure they call WoD. I did not regret it either since I was mainly a PvP person and the general consensus was that it was ruined and it was a snoozefest. But it's nice to watch these videos to see what I missed out on moving forward. :)

Wotlk hype, Wotlk hype. I can recall playing legion for about 3 weeks and stopped playing, same thing happened with Mists, although I played for a month (I skipped the expansion between those). Been playing tbc classic recently prepping for wotlk classic, time to have fun with wow again. The game might have had alot of quality of life changes over the years, but the game was easy to understand and play back then... play retail today after any kind of break and your completely lost...

been playing arenas ~ 2.7k mmr in legion just doing the weekly reward for it felt so much of a chore that I stopped playing legion pvp entirely after season 1 as it could well take up to 3+ hours due to the queue time, length of the matches against decent opponents aswell as the fact that the requirement were 10 wins which was simply harder to archieve the higher rated we played.
In fact I would say the higher rated we got the more punishin pvp felt when it came to the rewards, not to mention the rng based loot system could mean months of wasted effort due to item duplicates or simply bad rolls and while normalizing stats in pvp felt great at first it became pretty bad as soon as people put more effort into grinding out artifact power as while the gear lvl was about even at any point this was not the case for artifact weapon lvl and some of the very powerful traits which could make a huge difference in rated pvp content even before they added a form of infinite scaling to it.
Also early on there was a glitch that would allow people to stat stack due to a bad implementation of the down scaling system in arenas making them absolute wrecking balls in green gear and while not many people abused it we occasionally met people simply oneshotting us for no reason, then there is the fact that each class/spec would benefit differently from secondary stats not just in general but also depending on the at that time current patch and normalizing them was simply more benefitial for some of them then for others and it was out of the players hands to do anything about it which felt rather bad imo.

Thanks for doing this series! Personally i liked the game more before Legion came out... Legion introduced AP, world quests, Legendaries and mythic +. As a raid logger i don't approve of any of this shit that keeps you playing for months after the content seizes to be relevant... This is especially true with the corruption system in bfa.
