First of all, the gay standards for older and old are all over the map. Some think anything over 25 is older and 35 as old.
I still think one hard fact is in place in the queer community: the older one gets, the more invisible they become. If the only option is "daddy" culture, then that only reinforces the age related prejudice that exists in gay culture.
Also, some people want relationships, not just sex. Sex is fine, but what comes after it determines relationship potential. If you are a middle-aged gay man, the odds are very likely that you have a lot working against you if you are twice their age. It's not that it is impossible, but with each passing year it becomes more unlikely you can build on that common ground, and more likely both are to be unhappy.
I have had friends on both sides of the fence of the issue, and it is really hard to not make an ass of yourself when you are about to retire from your job and your current partner is a sophomore in university.
It's a bet you will lose.

Same-o, same-o. 49 yo here, husband is 66, just passed our 25th. Madly in love, way more than we were back then, and that's saying something. We couldn't be happier. You know it's sad, though. I took more $hit from the gay community about our age difference than I ever got from anyone else. "Daddy", "gold digger", blah, blah, blah. Depressing. We're best friends. Wouldn't trade him for the world. I just wish more young gay people could see that a good, happy, contented life spent with someone you love is worth WAY more than staying on trend.
I'm 26 and interested in men from 35 to 45 socially, emotionally, intellectually, and physically (because many who have kept in shape during their youth have actually gained a substantial amount of strength later on in life contrary to ageist beliefs).

I grew up in the club scene where looks were pretty much everything. I found a lot of affirmation from good looking guys who wanted to hook up which was great for my self-esteem but short lived. I realized how shallow I had become and even now as an older dude, I find myself with the same mindset at times. It is a culture trap that is difficult to overcome for those who grew up with self- esteem issues.

BTW, I am part of a small group of older gay guys who get together for lunch once a month and swap stories. Our ages range from 48 to 95, and include several survivors of long-term relationships, 3 of which lasted over 50 years. Lots of experiences to share! The lunch idea, to me, is a great one. After all, we will not always be around to get together.
When I was 19 I was grossed out by anyone over 21. A friend of mine who really liked me was 28 and he was gross to me but he gave me his "just the tip" speech and, having not heard that one before, I thought it a reasonable request.

This is a really interesting video. When I was 25, I used to really like guys in their 40s and 50s for some reason...I think it was mostly because they were better spoken, were a little classier, but also because older men just looked more like men (as opposed to boys). Oddly, now that I’m 45, it seems like the guys who seem to show the most interest in me are in their early to mid-20s...but they’re usually just nice eye candy to me and I don’t have much attraction to them. Some of them are very mature, very well spoken, and quite intelligent...but I just don’t get excited by them. At 45, I’m actually noticing that I like guys 10-15 years my senior. I’ve had people tell me that I probably have/had issues with my own dad...but it was actually the opposite. My dad was a blue collar worker who took my brother and I fishing and crabbing, we used to work on my truck together (he taught me to change my oil when I was in high school), and he was your typical American man. When I came out to him, the first, and only, question he asked me was, “are you happy with your boyfriend?”...and when I said, “yeah”, he replied with, “that’s all that matters to me, and that’s all that should matter to any parent.” So I definitely didn’t have any dad issues.
PS - yes, that’s a current picture. One of the perks of being Japanese...you look young for quite a while. Hehe.

I was never into younger guys before this and still am not, just one. My fiancé is 23 and I am 42. We have plenty to talk about at the end of the day. The world is chocked full of so many wonderful things to talk about and learn. People tell us all the time that we are such a beautiful couple and the age thing does not matter. It never even comes up! It did at first because I had my doubts but I am glad that I gave it a chance.

I can relate. I think the perfect age is 28 for looks and charisma as an adult man. But for actual interaction, anything less than about 34 just feels like babysitting. Its not their fault. Twenty-somethings are cute or hot, but they just don't 'get it' until they are nearing 30 or over.

Well, I'm a 30 year old lighter black skinned gay male I find older men annoying, particularly older white males. On all my ads in which I express to seeking a boyfriend, I make it very clear that I'm looking for no older than 33. But then I open up my e-mail and I get gobs and gobs of e-mails from white males, ranging from ages 36 all the way to 65. It never fails. My requests is always rudely ignored and it pisses me the fuck off. Sometimes they will even answer me without giving their age and give all their other information. I will ask them what's their age. And they will give me a huge e-mail discussing other things without answering my question. I will try to be nice and address their points and ask again and I am once again ignored. It's incredibly obnoxious and annoying dealing with older men and particularly older white males. I never get black men and men of other races acting as predatory. Sometimes Latinos engage in it, but it's mostly always white males pulling this bullshit!

Ageism is a very sad thing. Back when we all needed each other, we had friendships. Now that gay people are more accepted, the "need" for us to all stick together is gone and old people are no longer needed. Whereas all straight men think all gay people want them, all young gay people think that all old gay people want them. Sad.

+yescandles 5 years ago I answered a young mans ad. He was looking for friends. I have always believed age doesn't matter when it comes to real friendships; "real" being the key word. I have always had young friends in my life. The young man was 19 years old. I was 67. I am gay; he is straight. I told him upfront that I was that age and gay when I answered his ad. We met and today we have an unbelievable friendship. I mean it is the best; It's the way friendship is supposed to be.
Just to let you know I am not your typical 72 year old man. I feel like a teenager. Being around young folks helps keep you young. So I just say to you...don't let age be a factor. Beautiful friendships can happen between any age. I treasure this one with my young friend, and so does he.

It should be about attraction but the sad truth is that if you don't fit a certain look no is ever interested. When I was in my 20's no one older hit on me or younger for that matter. I went through my 30's into my late 40's and nothing changed. I think generally people go for a certain number of things that they look for in another person and there are some of us around that just don't make the first tick box. It doesn't mean to say we have nothing to offer because we do. It just means it takes us so much longer if ever to find someone. The important thing though is to remember to enjoy life and live.

But yes, in the scheme of current life expectancy and physical standards, anything 20-30 should probably be considered young to some degree. He didn't go after younger men. We met through a common friend and the spark was instant! I knew he was Mr Right and vice versa.
We have been together for 7 years now and I haven't been happier. And yes the sex is fantastic. Much better than I had with younger, selfish, inexperienced men. We have had our bumps but managed to overcome issues. We have so much in common but enough differences to keep things fresh. Of course people wonder and probably gossip behind our backs.

It's not just an age gap. If you date someone 40 years older/younger than you, there are major physiological differences. Relationships are supposed to be mutual, not just 'loving'.
I'm fully prepared for the reality that he will die before me. That doesn't bother me, We both talked a lot before we got together, What do I lose from 30 years of happiness? I'll have great memories and I'll be sad when that day comes but it would of been worth every minute. The relationship is Mutual. It's no different from what you consider a normal relationship. I think after two years in which we continue to grow stronger I don't think either of us have been stupid in our decision to live together and make a life together.
Age should not be an issue when it comes to falling in love. Having said that, older men who only look for much younger guys are pathetic because it seems that they do not love themselves, and younger guy who only look for much older men they are either looking to fulfill their fetishes or looking for a sugar daddy. If you fall in love with someone, you should consider yourself and your partner equal and not just look for financial or sexual benefits.

Agreed but I think the lack of respect is what is problematic on these apps. Exactly the same deal as with :"No Fats No Fem No Asians" bullshit. You CAN be unattracted to either of these "categories" but theres a way to say it.
I think the actual issue with age difference in dating (for me at least) has to do with aging at the same rate. If I were to date a guy who is significantly older or younger than me then as we grow old together there is a very high likelihood that one of us will die way before the other person. I don't know if I can handle that heartbreak of living a large portion of my life without the person I intended to spend the rest of my life with. Sure, there is no guarantee that dating someone around the same age as you fixes that problem, but the chances are a whole lot better.
I feel sorry for men that are in their mid 30s and up who only are attracted to younger men. They're missing out!
