- Welcome to our new sub-series At Home in the Kitchen! We love and value you, our viewers, so when you talk, we listen!! Many of you have requested seeing more kitchens in the homes we feature, so we have created an entire new series focusing on stylish kitchens of designers and tastemakers with design advice and some cooking/baking as well! We are excited to kick it off with John Kanell, Creator of Preppy Kitchen, the über popular food blog and TH-cam cooking and baking sensation. A recent Connecticut transplant from Los Angeles, John, his husband Brian and twin sons are now enjoying New England life while they renovate their new home. After meeting Susanna at a book signing for At Home with Dogs and Their Designers, John enlisted her help in decorating their dining room (stay tuned to the end of the video!). And when the redo of his spectacular new kitchen was finished, we knew John was the perfect subject to debut our new series!! With tons of tips, from storage to stoves and spices to sprinkles, John explains how he created his perfect studio kitchen! Wow! I've never seen a kitchen that is so detailed and so well-thought-out and just-right for the person using it.---I noticed John uses a KitchenAid mixer. Good choice. My grandmother's KitchenAid mixer was used for I don't even know how many decades over three generations of my family.---Susanna and Stacey, I think we might need a sequel to this video---and more cake!

What a lovely kitchen (and tour). I remember when the space was just a large, empty space with exposed wood studs and construction underway. Now... what a transformation. I love all the beautiful storage solutions too. It's just gorgeous and I'm sure it's a pleasure to work in. Be sure to sneak-in plenty of kitchen glimpses (sigh, swoon) when you shoot your food/videos. You have such stunning backdrops at every angle of the kitchen.

Well for the first time since I subbed here I am almost at a total loss for words.. I had no idea someone could do "kitchen" better than me.. I bow down to the master. That professional stove? The drawer of tea cups? The sprinkles and seasonings galore drawers? I felt like I was in a dream. I can not look at my kitchen the same way now. Stacey and Susanna? OMG - I have no need for such a big kitchen and in fact wish mine was smaller but for a cook and someone who does this for a living this is amazing. And so well thought out. And drawers are the key to a good kitchen. Especially slow close drawers.

I really like that china drawer! I was gifted a set and have kept it all carefully wrapped and stored in a box. Now I have an idea of where I can store it without worrying!

The kitchen is absolutely glorious! I, too, am a fan of a clean and uncluttered work surfaces as well as alphabetized spices! You can immediately find whatever spice you need. Are you planning to color coordinate your sprinkles drawer too? How beautiful would that be?
I have to say that while the flowers looked absolutely amazing on top of that cake, I think it may be against the law to not put as much buttercream frosting as humanly possible on that huge amount of cake. What is this naked cake blasphemy he speaks of? I always thought the crumb coat was a thin layer put on first so when you added the mounds of delicious, creamy, fluffy, heavenly frosting, crumbs wouldn’t get in the icing. Cakes are shy... cover that nakedness with some frosting that isn’t see-through! 😉😉😉 Besides, isn’t the whole point of cake to be the catalyst for the frosting? 😂😂😂

I have a friend that is totally uninterested in frosting and I make a point to sit next to her at any “cake occasions”! 😂😂😂 She gives me her “excess frosting” (as if there actually is such a thing), and I give her my excess cake!
