Some additions to the xp: +30xp Intellect devourers at the beach are easy if you have minor illusion - you can minor illusion next to the purple tank and blow it up. +60xp: Taking the exploration xp at the chapel and at the fire resistance elixir chest right at level 2 is only 10xp, but if you wait for later that xp scales with your level. Those two are 40xp each if you wait for level 4 to go there +3xp: Killing scared boar near Astarion +10xp: Taking Mattis' ring and giving it back to him (this counts as helping a tiefling kid) +30xp: If barth lives, you get his quest, which is 30xp total but requires passing two intimidation checks. (Technically you get 40xp but the last 10 xp here are the same as the 10xp for Mattis) +15xp: Reading the journal near Arron +2xp: Shooting squirrels by Alfira (lol) +15xp: Reading the rite of thorns scroll in the room with Kagha's chest +10xp: KO scratch (while disguised; he'll show up in your camp as usual afterwards) +20xp: Read the notes on making the sussur weapon in the basement under the house with the 15xp journal in the blighted village. +35xp: Chicken chasing in the goblin camp, do it as drow disguise to avoid a check to get your money back +15xp: Logbook of sendings, in the hallway behind the moon puzzle above the ladder to the Selunite Outpost +35xp: Cast invisibility on smythin in the goblin camp, before he gets knocked into the spider pit. I usually use the scroll Baelen rewards me for this. +60xp: Rescue Baelen (I recruit Glut and have him move baelen's pack to him, since Glut doesn't make the mushrooms explode - not sure if y'all allow Glut on your solo runs) You can also do the arcane tower (~400xp), or use Glut's Minotaur to kill the petrified drow without triggering the spectator (240xp). If you allow sacrificing a companion to BOOOAL in solo runs that's another 830xp. So there's plenty of room to hit level 5. I like hitting level 5 before going to Grymforge, since the exploration xp you get for entering Grymforge scales with your level (75xp at level 4, 150xp at level 5). General tips: For the zhent outpost guy, if you open the door and jump through the gap in the shelves right in front of him, he will run away without requiring you to make a check. You can also jump in the hole in the roof to avoid the check. For the +1 dagger near the barn couple, if you do the investigation check you can leave and retry it over and over until you pass. For stonemason kith, you can disguise yourself and retry the 3 checks, once per disguise. You can enter the myconid colony without a check if you choose the dialogue option to tell Spaw the truth of the parasite. Phalar aluve is checkless if someone's bled on it. I often have Shovel walk next to phalar aluve and punch her to get the sword. Rather than turnbased and last-hit the minotaur at the Selunite Outpost, you can turnbased and shoot the moonstone, then fight the minotaur. The minotaur will stand around and not attack if you end your turns on top of the gate, and come down to shoot. "Ignore him and fill your plate" on the initial raphael appearance gives you some bread (lol) You can smear poop on your face to avoid the skill check at the goblin camp entrance as non-drow. I like dragging the necromancy of thay off the table towards me to avoid the cursed pathing there If you don't have disguise, you can enter the south gate of the blighted village and pay a small bribe to get in. That gives you the xp for the southern entrance goblins; you can still kill the eastern entrance goblins for additonal xp (and vice versa when you enter from the eastern gate) Scratch dialogue is retriable, if you fail, leave and retrigger the dialogue checks. As said earlier, you can attack the ox once and return to trigger the dialogue to buy the ring off him. I like shooting from right outside the kids' hideout and immediately running down the ladder. You can get the 10xp for reading Aradin's Stamped Handbill from his dead body. If you dialogue check the chapel raiders or Fezzerk's group you can still kill them for xp before they run off. Failing the first check on Kagha to not kill Arabella is fine. There's a second check, and IIRC an easy passive check before that second check to get a dialogue option to save Arabella that's checkless, along the lines of "you don't want the trouble killing her will cause you".
I'm not taking into account real-time speed for the above xp - but for people who don't mind going slower so that your route to level 5 is more forgiving, you can try some of the above. There are also some fun tactics in the grove fight to get extra xp, like if it's your turn and Barth is about to die, you can shoot Barth yourself to get 20xp :).
For the necromancy of thay book, you can interact with it instead of rightclick -> pick up and select "stash the book" and your character won't run around the table.
I've followed this route 3 times and every time I've ended up about 250xp short. If that happens to anyone else, what I did was complete the Masterworking quest (no combat necessary if you sneak long-jump onto the tree, grab the bark in turn-based mode and jump away again), I rescued Balen by throwing his bag to him with mage hand, killed the intellect devourers at the crash site with the purple explodie thing, killed a couple of Goblins at the village and then used a smoke powder barrel to kill the 3 Goblins at the table between the check point and the Goblin village. That should get you to level 5 with low risk if you find yourself short 👍
To get the Shapeshifter ring: If you keep your PC back a bit and send a mage hand to go smack it, it will hostile and kill the mage hand. You can then go up and talk to him to initiate a trade to make him happy with you again, and from there trade the ring from him. Killing it is faster/easier, but if you want to keep it around for the story that's possible too.
If you manage to see the hatch behind Doni you can also shoot the strange ox, triggering combat, and immediately go down the hatch and come back to do the same thing with trading
Edit: Actually, I just went back and watched the Melphit fight before Grym, seems like that yields 750XP so I actually definitely didn't get Grym XP. That explains why I've done everything in this video + cleared brains at the start + cleared bone man's temple + cleared the duergar + cleared hellboars and merregon in grymforge + a bunch of other things and I'm 75XP from 5. Original Comment: On the topic of Grym not giving XP if you throw items and he dies to gravity damage (approx 1:01:50) I actually had this issue earlier today; went into the Grym fight with ~2400 XP to level 5, after the fight I had roughly the same XP, reloaded the game after doing the spiders in Grymforge + getting the invis ring + melphits by second Mitral ore vein and I have ~1300 XP to level 5, so looks like I got that Grym XP after reloading. Can't say for sure since I wasn't really keeping an eye on it but that seems to be the case
Yeah I would bet thats what happened. It's not a huge deal unless you are playing solo, in which case you really need the almost 900 xp he gives to get that boost to level 5.
@@SitDownSon06 yeah I am playing solo, it's fine though I started again and I'm already caught up, did it with the hammer this time and made level 5 easily.
you don't have to kill the ox to get the ring. you can attack him, then leave and come back. he'll ask for money to smooth things over, and you can buy the ring
I came here looking for a guide to rush level 4 for tavern brawler in my solo Eldritch Knight thrower on tactician, and ended up learning how to get to level 5 on honor mode. That's a neat bonus!
for the grove fight: you can jump into the grove, and blow the horn every round for easy mode. i think elixer+enhanced leap will do it. storm sorcery can get you in for sure. maybe mage hand can blow the horn, too? i haven't tried
Thanks for the video, going to try honor mode as I just recently came back to the game. Also, there is a Catilaginous chest on the beach, up above where the brains are for more XP and some loot. (X:271 Y:277)
Too bad the Githyanki encounter was included. I've checked... it yielded 315 xp. If skipped then you can get the Silver Sword drop 100% at level 5 with a beast master and bear honey paw attack from invisible ofc with a divinatory wizard with a portent dice of 17+.
Hey, thank you for the video! What I noticed is that it's hard to hear your voice over the game sometimes and I think you could have skipped some combat footage. But I liked it. Good luck with future videos.
That is from the deluxe edition of the game. It’s not a big deal if you don’t have it. I just use the strength elixer to help me jump farther to speed up the video.
10:47 I didn't realize till now that background plays a part in inspiration. Edit: In that case, is there a way to metagame this for bonus exp? Getting a background that would proc a lot of early game exp?
If you don't have digital deluxe, do you need to start wizard/sorcerer for access to feather fall, enhanced jump, and disguise self? Assuming that two of those are needed for an efficient early game route (traversing and transforming to Drow/Gith if you don't want to start one of those races)? I know you can always re-spec after getting leveled up but I'm lazy and don't like re-specs
Disguise self is the most important thing to have. It really speeds up act one. Jump and feather fall are convenient but if respec breaks immersion for you it’s totally not needed.
I did the solo run without any deluxe, disguise self, or durge - so let's say you're a random race that isn't 'efficient' for the situations. Goblins in general are easy if you have talking profs or at least some wisdom for detect thoughts. Leave the gnome part for a post-long rest so you have the illithid option. Without long rests (or as a challenge), make sure you can get away to the roofs, they're easy kiting from there. Other encounters are easy enough, though I'd give up the gith pass and walk from the gob camp one - if the gith get initiative you're 99% screwed. I go kill things instead, I ended a run too many there because of low rolls. In general, with or without the 'buffs' you get from disguise self, but especially without, learn to love fleeing combat
@@orshefer1467 haha yeah, requiring disguise self, enhanced leap, and feather fall on a single character is a little bit overkill for the sake of optimization. Still, having a consistent route to get you level 4/5 for feats does make the early game more bearable lol.
@@ironbar2009 jump isn't a must and feather fall even less, but jump + elixir saves SO much time on the 'walking' I try to always have it. Keeping yourself sane in these runs is a must imho 😅
So question... do you get more xp from doing the persuasive options or from killing, like example with the windmill goblins is it more xp to kill them all or just persuade them not to fight? Same question for the bandits at the temple for another example
