I can't believe it's been five years today since this video was uploaded and that 1.7 million plus viewers have watched this segment. The World Championship win put me on the magic map, but Ellen and her amazing crew were the ones that gave me the much needed exposure to help me keep doing magic for a living. Heck, Penn & Teller would most likely have never asked me to do their show Fool Us, if not for Ellen. I owe her, the crew and all of you a huge thanks... so THANKS. -shawn
as a fan of magic tricks, I say sir I love your performance and I enjoy your style very much, you've got quite the talent. thank you for the entertainment.
One of his quotes it, "It's my job." and he always, ALWAYS says it with his signature smile... I truly believe he loves what he does, and now as the President of his chapter, he can begin to take that enthusiasm with him for the next generation.
TheMojo487 he is the president of his magic circle, or whatever. which allows him to place people in certain venues i guess. just a good guy in a good guys position
There is a beaufil video, where he talks to a small boy, who wants to be a magician. He says "If you become a magician, you will never be rich, but you will live like a rich. You will travel the whole world on cruise ships and first class airlines, you will stay in the most beautiful hotels on the world hanging out with the richest people of the world. And you will be paid to do all of that." But part of that enthusiasm is his stage persona "They won't remember, what you said or what tricks you did," he said, "but they will always remember the way you made them feel."
Dear Mr. Farquhar , I thoroughly enjoyed the trick . Amazing . What is more amazing is your confidence , stage presence and bubbling enthusiasm . I saw it first on Penn and Teller and then here . Just fantastic . This means anything is possible .
Kirigaya Kazuto Come back in a few years and see your comment. Then tell me if you will be ashamed of yourself for being a sarcastic douche for stupid reasons.
Only Magician on Ellen who actually does an original trick, that isn't something you can easily look up on youtube and figure out how to do. I soo wish I knew how to do that last trick, AMAZING! Keep it up Shawn Farquhar!!!!
I'm still wondering 5 years later how he phases the card through the box and into the correct position. One of the most legendary tricks of this century!
Telling how its done isnt a big thing .... you watch it over & over & over & then you can figure it out .... but doing this trick is not an easy thing ... This guy is really professional & and the best slieght hand magician ive seen so far . His magic never fails to surprise me even if I know the trick . (sorry for my bad English anyway xD )
Did anyone else pause the video for the last trick and take a screenshot of the card Ellen signed to see if they were the same? I did, and when I looked at the photos, they were exactly the same, so I completely believe this guy has magic
primaryramus you're write! Lol! Why do I see "slight" in my mind? I guess I've only used that word verbally, in the past. It somehow got watered down, over the years. Thanks!. It'll appear different, in my mind, from now on. Lol
the trick explained on vsauce channel, the trick has to do witht the fact it's pairs, and the shuffling he does is actually planned and does he reall expect us to belive that the deck is new
2:07 = the old "Luke Skywalker" as Penn would say? jk..You are amazing Shawn. The trick that fooled Penn and Teller is simply one of the most amazing I have ever seen!! Truly original!
I love how all these 15-25 year old magicians all know exactly how he did it when this guy was on penn and tellers TV show and the guys who have been doing magic over 40 years couldn't figure out that last trick
GETURHANDSUP916 That doesn’t do a shit. One of the most ignorant piece of crap is that people can figure out such genius with their bullshitt rewinding logic. No sorry it doesn’thold true for advanced tricks performed by master magicians..! I have been doing magic for more than 10 years and I know what I am talking about!
Well we know he does a deck switch as he made a mistake on Penn and teller and they told us that. The only part we and they don’t know how to do is how he got the card back in the deck in the correct position.
She is so freaking incredible and completely humble. I love shin Lim but his act is so theatrical whereas Sean just gets right to the trick and does things that make your jaw drop. Kind of cool that you got two choices of magicians that talented with close-up card magic.
I can see why he's the World Champion. Card mastery, the purest I've ever seen. The version he did on Fool Us was cooler (he flipped the card on its face in the repackaged deck). I can't decide if his consistent force of the 7 of diamonds is relevant to the trick or not...
Well she chose the 8 and Penn chose the 7, so it's not always the same card but it has something to do with that general Diamond area when the cards are in new deck order. If you watch the Fool Us video in .25 speed you can sort of figure out how he does it.
its a good force, when he says plunk your finger on a card and he watches you move your finger he quickly shuffles to the spot for the designated diamond card. the mid diamonds are good because they're pretty far along so it looks like its a random card. the photo was already taken before hand with his daughter which is why it's a force.
how it's done (just ignore if you figured it yourself or don't want to know...) : 1. is just about the way he shuffles them before the first pair. the cuts (butterfly cut etc.) don't change the order of the cars. 2. he's not going through the cards at all, but makes her pick the right card (2:00 he puts the cards in order, 2:07 his fingers are not moving any cards). i guess she knows about the trick and plays her part (insider). 3. the "new" deck is open at the bottom and prepared to slip in her signed card. he never shows the bottom of the deck. he swaps decks at 2:32 when the camera is focused on the picture in her hands. he puts the joker on top of the sealed box to make it look on camera like he's just holding a deck (again I assume she knows what's happening, because she would have seen the sealed deck). 2:52 you can see him insert the card inside the box (it would look different if he'd just slip it inside an opened deck). the rest ist easy. 3:50 you can see that he keeps the finger underneath to prevent the cards from falling out at the bottom, and also that one card slightly sticks out of the deck, that's where he slid her card in (you wouldn't have that in a real new deck). edit to say: BUT of course it's all very well executed, good job on those tricks!
1. Skillful sleight of hand, with nice false cuts and is very impressive as you pointed out. 2. Invisible force, this is what Criss Angel uses to get great reactions. The thing that makes it obvious is the fact that he has her touch a card instead of pull one out. 3. If you watch him on Penn + Teller Fool Us your explanation does not hold up, and honestly I have no clue how he did it, though a deck switch is used (as pointed out by you and Penn during their show)
DrunkDonkey16 true the Penn+Teller one is even more impressive. Still it's obvious there that he gets out a prepared box (you can actually see the sides of the box on camera there), slips the card into the box from the bottom, and then closes it. i'm sure it's a prepared box with some kind of inner sleeve to guide the card into the right place. it is also possible to prepare a box with an open bottom, with the plastic already in place to look sealed when closed. the card force is impressive there though. and it's true he dons't need the helper (ellen/penn) to "help". it's all extremely well executed, that's why he got the "world champion" title.
2:36 he takes a deck out of his pocket. That is funny. He used the outcome of the first trick to hide him grabbing the second deck but with the camera men out of the loop they catch it.
That's not the trick though, the trick is getting the signed card into the new deck. He's meant to let you see the deck switch. Watch the trick on Shawn Farquhar - Penn and Teller Fool Us.
still, the trick is getting the signed card in the box, everybody with a little bit of knowledge of magic knows he grabs the deck and when he hides it between her hands... what most people dont kow though is how he gets the card in the box, at the right position and gets the plastic and paper seal to appear unbroken... penn & teller even got a chance to examine the deck when he performed it for them and penn was unable to detect any cuts or openings in the deck even when asked to examine it.... i have loved magic all my life, and i think i have a pretty good understanding of how most of it work, but this particular trick, i have no clue, not even a hint how he gets the card in there at the right position in what appears to be a sealed deck of cards.
Ewenya p When he fanned them out finally at 4:07 after getting it from ellen he just inserted the signed card into it! And inserting cards at correct positions into the deck is another trick which i dont know(i think +Saad MAFiA answerd this question), but he used just this trick when he performed the paring cards trick.
Prakash Rajendran The only reaosn he touches the cards was because Ellen isnt very good with them so she wasnt showing anything to the audience, Ive seen he do this trick more than once without even touching the deck after he opens the box. You see all this great magicians do a wide variety of tricks, none of them do this one tough cause ppl realy dont know what the heck he does to get that card in there.
Everyone here's pointing out his Penn & Teller trick, but I'd like to also recommend his Shape of my Heart card trick. That's where I first found Shawn, and it's one of my favourite tricks to watch. If you liked his Penn & Teller performance, you'd like it too. th-cam.com/video/gywW6KJcfo0/w-d-xo.html I apologise for the low quality. I don't think there are any higher quality recordings of this trick.
Neal G they sound like smart ppl. "5 munutes to learn. Years to perfect it" OMG. Mosted used comment on magic vids. Just say years, why u need to sound like a smarty pants.
Ah, wonderful, thanks for sharing, an ever so important missing piece of the puzzle of the universe has finally been put into place. Phew. The world has become a better place. Now flies have a new place to shit on.
At 2:35 you can see him change the cards he has been using for a brand new deck with a seal on it, (this deck of cards was wrapped with Ellen's 8 of diamonds card signed before the show and it was already missing the Joker). Then he has Ellen sign her 8 of diamonds card and he puts it under the wrapped deck in their enclosed hands. He says he needs to pull out the Joker but he just pulls out the 8 of diamonds that is signed by Ellen and puts it in his shirt and opens the prearranged deck.
***** The same applies for Penn and Teller. Just because he did the same trick on another TV show, does not dismiss my reasoning of how he did so. If you want to prove me wrong, point out a legitimate fallacy in my assertion. But if you actually read through my comment, and followed my reasoning you'd likely understand what was happening Mr. Clueless.
Nope, I know how he did it but that's not it. However I don't know how he repackaged the deck and put it in order, that trick also fooled Penn and Teller.
I don't like revealing magic tricks. As a magician I think magic secrets should only be known by magicians. Also knowing how it's done spoils the fun. I'm sorry.
Ellen just seemed annoyed through it all, some people react to magic that way. Been doing some tricks in school before, and some people, like Ellen it seems, just get angry and annoyed when they get fooled
These magic effects are all very perplexing, and the man is pleasant enough, but for me they didn't create the emotional feeling that anything "magical" was happening, it just seemed like a rushed display of cleverness for Ellen. I think other magicians watching this maybe cannot match this man for his technical perfection alone, but I bet you could beat him in displaying a more relaxed and magical "presentation", which I think is what really matters most to the audience in the end. Just my two cents...
Definitely agree, the nature of his tricks (except the last one) just felt rushed and a bit too technical to have a wow factor (although they were impressive nonetheless).
Georgian Wolf David Blaine can take a basic Ambitious Card routine and make it into a stunning effect; maybe sometimes the simpler effects have a greater impact on an audience then the most knuckle-busting sleight of hand tricks do...
I don't know. I liked his performance alot. I guess it's a style thing, like prefering bar/street magicians (all up close, nothing too fancy, check out dynamo) over stage magic (more atmosphere with using music, lots of props, fancy stuff). But I know what you mean. He's a lot more on the "yeah, its a trick" side, less on "how did I do it? Magic!*winkwink*" side.
+DanyalShams99 The deck he has her chose from is all 8 of diamonds. While she's double checking the photo with her card etc. you can see he pulls out another deck of cards from his jacket (after putting that one away), which would be a full deck, WITHOUT the 8 of diamonds, so when he puts hers back in, it completes the deck. The whole brand new deck trick tho, that's always been sorcery to me
It was kind of similar to a Svengali deck, but instead of having smaller cards that are all the same, the smaller cards were the pairs of the bigger cards, hence, when he "revealed" to Ellen that all cards were not pairs, he did the same "revealing" as when a magician reveals to the spectators that a svengali deck is a normal deck.

Clueless.
That was the trick he fooled penn and teller with
This is top level !!! bravo
Here's a pair, here's a pair, here's a pair... "How do you like them apples?"
Awesome! He did that trick on Penn and teller!
each pair is slightly sticked together, so whenever he shuffles they stay together
Nope, I know how he did it but that's not it. However I don't know how he repackaged the deck and put it in order, that trick also fooled Penn and Teller.
Care to share?
I don't like revealing magic tricks. As a magician I think magic secrets should only be known by magicians. Also knowing how it's done spoils the fun. I'm sorry.
I understand, the fun part this figuring things out. Now I can work on my other guessings
who's to say they come together? why not just grab one from the bottom and one from the top huh
How was she not amazed by his award winning trick at the end. That trick is unbelievable.
"just make up your mind" 😂😂😂
Hahahaahaaha I laughed so hard xD
simple tricks, great execution. pretty much all sleight of hand.
Ellen just seemed annoyed through it all, some people react to magic that way. Been doing some tricks in school before, and some people, like Ellen it seems, just get angry and annoyed when they get fooled
She's looks confused not annoyed
wow that last one was really good!!!!
PEARS!!!! PAIRS!!!!!!!!!! PEARS!!!!!!!!!!
Didnt realise i liked this video 9 years ago. Time flies:(
I like Shawn's magic much more than Shin Lim. Shawn's is equally as impressive, and doesn't have all the flashy/cheesy theatrics to go along with it.
💚Gorgeously Lovely!‼️💜♥️
🌍♥️💜💙💚💛🧡❤♥️🌎
Jonathan Kim Sing David Blaine gets the presentation down perfect. He is able to act cool you kno?
You are amazing Shawn! GREAT performance and super slick,
i dont know anymore...
I love that trick at the end
great trick, he fooled Penn and Teller twice.
Wow. I used to think my sleights were good... So much for that...
Great job. Completely great job.
who elts is watchoing in 2015?
Nah
2015 was so last year ago
i love his attitude, he's so nonchalant and goofy. hahah.
that's a pear
these are pears
those are pears
"No, those are cards! Haha you can't fool me!"
No shit fdesaa...... i'm not fucking stupid
This guy is awesome, he fooled pen and teller....
Twice
Yeah - I heard he's getting his trophy modified to say F.U....2.
all of the pairs were just on top he did a false cut thats NOT cool
well a lot of people don't know that, and it was just an opening trick just to warm up. now explain how he did the rest of the tricks.
+DanyalShams99 ^
+DanyalShams99 The deck he has her chose from is all 8 of diamonds. While she's double checking the photo with her card etc. you can see he pulls out another deck of cards from his jacket (after putting that one away), which would be a full deck, WITHOUT the 8 of diamonds, so when he puts hers back in, it completes the deck. The whole brand new deck trick tho, that's always been sorcery to me
+Bradley K he shuffled it hto. Its a trick deck, kind of like an invisible deck
Ellen's face when he showed his daughters picture was hilarious. She was like: This is so creepy. loool
He fooled penn and teller so i wont be surprised if he pulls a great act on ellen
I love his enthusiasm!!!
Ellen always seems so unamused. Like she dont care at all
I love that first trick. I think I'll start doing that one :)
I saw a lot of pairs, but not a whole lot of pears. I'm disappointed.
"Just make up your mind!" hahaha love her!
Please people of the internet... stop uploading videos that are not in HD!!!!
when the dude shuffled the deck he didnt really shuffle it he just made it look fancy. he made it look like he was shuffling it. he is very very good
