this was the only instructional video that not only made this easy, but repeatable. May sound stupid, but there is something to be said for making students repeat what you say to actually retain info. Thanks for the video and service!
I have been looking for the proper way to install my sling on my M1A. Your video was what I was looking for. Thanks for making this instructional video. Hoorah! It's an Army thing!
Very good- EXCELLENT ! in fact. I heard and understood every word the man said loud and clear .Great instructional video . Thank you very much for putting this one-of-a-kind presentation on TH-cam. Absolutely Brilliant.
I never tire of this video and watch it when I need a little sanity in my life... especially when I see a video of someone using his own method of attaching the M1907 sling to their rifle. They obviously are not using it as originally designed... a proper loop sling shooting aid. I suppose they think a complicated 2 piece sling attached (and improperly assembled) to their rifle looks cool when a simple, single piece sling would serve them much better.
Watched less than 5 minutes now, and already love it. Beautiful teaching. Too bad I am far, far away. I would love to take this lesson in person and learn shooting from him. Is this CMP?
I've noticed one thing he says which may be a mistake. He says the feed end goes down thru the dog on the short piece. He means down thru the D-ring. The dog is the hook. Feed the feed end down thru the D-ring and pull it through 3 quarters of the way and feed it thru the keepers.
I wish the video showed the sling a bit clearer and closer. I've watched it a number of times and following the verbal instruction as best I could. I'm confused by - putting the feed end of the long strap "down through the front swivel". When I do this all the holes on the long strap are on the side close to the rifle. Surely you would want all the holes on the long strap (and the dog for that matter) on the outside, away from the rifle? If I put the feed end up through (towards the muzzle) the front swivel, all the holes on the long sling portion are on the outside, where its easy to attach the dog from the short strap. Am I doing it wrong?
Nope, that's exactly right, the holes, and the dog should be against the rifle, Assembling it in this fashion causes the tension of the sling to pull the dog back against the keepers, maintining the tension of the sling, and keeping it from loosening, untill you pull the outboard strap when you are ready to get out of position. hope that helps!
Would it be possible for you do this video in a home setting with better lighting that shows the proper loop sling setup and donning? I am trying to follow this video but the combination of a black sling and the video being so far away makes it hard for me to get it right.
Hi, thanks for video. No matter what I do, I cannot replicate this sling. I have a Turner Saddlery sling (not leather). I can set it up like US Army M1 Garand style with keepers apart. I cannot seem to get it to work with the keepers together and 'always up against the dog'. If I did. my keepers would need to stretch over three pieces of sling - is this correct? My arm loop never remains tight. It is difficult to see how he has his sling. Is a dog and both keepers tight against arm?
onslaught5012 had no idea slings were so beneficial to a rifle. Thought it was just to carry it. Bought one and was horrified that it came in two pieces and then watched about 4 sling videos and they act like it's the best thing around. But after using that sling to stabilize the rifle I was blown away! Thanksb
@onslaught5012 - Sorry for the late reply, but maybe it'll help someone else. Don't put the loose end of the sling, the feed end back thru the keepers. Leave it loose, it can either hang out the side, or turn and continue along the inside of the loop, whichever feels more comfortable. I'll try and get a photo to describe better
Actually the modern military tactical 3 point sling allows the same maneuvers for stability. It also has cool options like the weapon ditch/ if you fall into the water or get stuck in a tight spot and need to ditch the rifle. The three point sling allows you to rest or carry the rifle comfortably across your chest not just over your shoulder. And most modern slings are tailored around the individual rifles they were designed for. I know the USNs 3 points are supplied by black hawk the USMC however I have seen switching to just a single point sling which was actually designed for pdw,s. The supplier I have on that one is London bridge trading co. In reality slings in use vary from unit to unit. Open purchases are allowed and must be approved by supply officers and sometimes commanding officers. Basically it’s all up to whatever your armors decide they want to order from the supply system. Or whatever you bring yourself.
If it is with just one rifle I would have to suspect that there could be an issue with the gun, ( front sight pins, barrel nut) ,or an instructor may have to observe your technique and tweak your form, this doctrine has been a game changer for me.
If shooting with a sling you should zero with the sling. A rifle like an M16A2 has the front sling mount on the barrel. That means when using the sling you are putting downward pressure on the barrel. It most definitely can change POI if it was sighted in without that same pressure.
Ken Roxburgh is a really good Marksmanship instructor and a damn fine Marine. Great video.
I don't have this kind of sling but listening to an excellent instructor is still enjoyable!

terrific instruction from a master instructor. Keep up the good work.

Thumbs up video ! Please do more for those of us who were not trained! Thanks.

This is some of the best explained instruction on slings I've ever come across.
Best instructor ever. Love it.
Outstanding !! I kept waiting for Gunny to put on a smokey the bear hat and start counting cadence.
Love this video, great instructions.

Excellent video! We teach everyone to use a sling at a Project Appleseed event. The most important aid to accurate rifle marksmanship.
yep i put a 1907 sling on my no4 mk1 enfield it made a major difference
50TNCSA Hey, I am about to do the same, what length sling did you use? Cheers JK
best video on the match sling !!!
Liked and subbed. This man is a pit bull. Excellent instructor, very knowledgeable. Respect on the highest level.

this confused the fuck out of me. thank you
That's one goofed up sling installation.

Follow the instructions and pay attention to rough side and smooth side of the sling.

How do the conventional slings compare to the modern, tactical slings, today?
Demon Hunter Two different beasts, a "tactical" sling is for weapon retention, and quick presentation, not for shooting stability.

Ahh....ol' Ken Roxborough.
Love this !!
Excellent
Nice job!!!
Hoorah Semper Fi carry on
Good Instructions
I see a great POI shift when I use a sling.
If it is with just one rifle I would have to suspect that there could be an issue with the gun, ( front sight pins, barrel nut) ,or an instructor may have to observe your technique and tweak your form, this doctrine has been a game changer for me.

Say it !!!
I'm still confused
If SHTF I will just throw rocks
He’s pretty obnoxious. Why can’t instructors just be pleasant and informative?
