as i already said, Little eyes of Willow looking with so much love is such an amazing thing to see... maybe you are already used to it, but I can feel it every time and it touches my heart so much. One can see how well your little animals are loved, and that is humbling!!!
You are really getting going this spring. With all the animals and gardens you are going to be busy. I just love seeing how Gina has become much more comfortable in front of the camera. Your whole family is such a joy to watch.

With you free ranging the chickens, you don't need to move NYC. You could consider some type of deep carbon-based bedding in the chicken pen and get them to help you make your compost.
@soaringtractor You should see Justin Rhode's system. His "breakfast posse" never moves and makes the most beautiful black gold (compost). If it starts to smell, you add more wood chips.
Al you have lived in New England long enough to know we usually jump from old man winter to summer in a few weeks. Looks like everyone is happy with the life style at Lumnah acres
I put a neon strip on both of my end poles. I did egg salad but I used avocado rather than mayo, even though I could've made the mayo from my eggs as well.
I read that the smells like rain smell is from a low pressure overhead. The soil always has air in it at the same pressure as the air, but when the air pressure lowers above, the air in the top few inches of soil can't come out all at once, so over a period of time it's kind of spraying out and whatever it lifts into the air with it is what you smell!!! Nature is cool.
Have a piece welded on you green house side opening lever, and then you can use your battery drill to open it easily. Worked in your garage for your ladder.

Tip - soaking the ground first will help when putting in the ground wire, plus it will earth better especially if you keep it moist. Love watching the vids guys, from sunny England.

Seeing all your gardening tools leaned up against the side of the outdoor kitchen makes me think one of your next projects might be a leanto or awning off that side to house all of the gardening tools and such. You did mention having a project in mind at the back of the outdoor kitchen when you were placing all of the large boulders back there 🧐 I love watching all your new projects and seeing the Homestead improve day by day. I also was so excited to see the chickens go out on pasture today!
It just got to 85° while I was planting the other day. It was fine while the clouds were blocking the sun, but then the clouds disappeared and the temp rose to 105° and fried a bunch of plants. It can go from nice and cool to way too hot very quickly at this time of year. Love your big greenhouse!
As soon as you said "now we have to find the end" I thought 'colored yarn' or string or tape, on the top of each end post. Make it easy to find the ends any time the fence is gathered up for storage or just during a move.
Lunch instead of dinner, that was nice for a change. Doing the chicken shuffle today. I don't know if they are confused but I sure am.
I loved seeing the chicken transition! Almost everyone got a new home. Soon it'll be time for the NYC flock and Rusty and his gang to get out on pasture. The meat birds are really going to take off now that they're outside. There's always so much to love in your videos!

Hope they've all settled in, and that the meat birds stay safe. It's going to interesting to see how that pasture improves once the animals have started to live on there for a while.

Funnily enough, I'm having egg salad sandwiches as my lunch today, using lettuce I have grown in my kitchen windowsill garden.
I didn't have a plan for lunch; but I do now. ;)

Al, Was watchin another channel and they were putting poultry netting up in a circle to eliminate the corner issues with the netting, they didn't have any pulling occurring on their corner posts because the netting wasn't pulling on the 90* angle. Just a idea for you next time you put up your netting as it seemed to work pretty good....

Al, when catching hens, use a long 1-1,5m rod with a hook bent towards you narrowing down and just half an inch at the bend. Get them by the leg
Hi Al &family, just a thought, with the uneven ground how's about filling bags/sacks with dirt/sand then place around bird pens - not much ,if anything is gonna get through + portable for any other gaps etc etc. Hope this helps, great to see all happening now for you!, regards to you all.

With all the pines that was in that pasture likely made the soil very acidic and that is not ideal for growing grass, you should test your soil and if it is high in acid spread some organic lime and the grass will grow better and faster.
Get the rocks out that are less than 18 inches deep....Then roto-till in some lime or fish meal. It may be worth getting a company with a commercial grade plow if you really intend to maximize the use/production of that plot.
It is nice to see the meat birds and turkeys out in the pasture. All looking great at Lumnah Acres. 💖
Watching your wife and daughter walk to the barn they look like "two peas in a pod". Soon you won't be able to tell them apart until they speak. That is a compliment in my book. Mom and I were always best of friends. God bless.
I was thinking here come the milk maids! Time to throw the other girls in with the billies, two to each one. They will bring them in being with them. Get your babies on the ground before it gets bad winter.
Maybe some of those hooks with rubber on them on that wall where you have all of your shovels, rakes etc. would help keep your tools organized and off the ground??? Okay I have a question??? How many of the FIFTY STATES have sent in CWC License Plates....UPDAT??? Which one's do you still need plates from??? Little Nora is so funny and curious she will learn quick who the kitty kitty is LOL.

You should set up some kind of rainwater collection system for any rain that comes off the greenhouse. You'd be able to water the greenhouse with it. You should rent or hire a grader in the fall to even out the surface of your land, then seed it so in the spring the grass will come up evenly.

regarding the two "cold frame" gardens. Tie a rope to the handle, and when you open it you can control the lid drop easily without walking around.
I was surprised he didn't put two handles, one toward each end of the lids instead of one in the middle.

With the Premire fence around them you should make a door that can allow them out in the fenced area. Maybe?

That was a very busy day today. The chicks and turkeys are now on pasture. Nora ventured part was to the feeder, but went back to find Momma, and Buttercup was relieved to have a kid sitter so she could go out by herself. God. Bless

You can put a hook in the chuck on a battery operated drill and use that to open and close your greenhouse side vents. It should make it easy for your wife to open and close the vents if necessary. Awesome planning and execution by your amazing family. Keep the great content coming... Joe
Al, Everyday your chickens play the same little game, they find their way out of your fence and everyday you lift the fence so can get to the feed. If I where you I would through the feed inside the fence and let the chickens find their own way back inside the fence they would soon learn which side of the fence had the greener grass.

Curious about how you intend to water your plants in the greenhouse long term. I noticed you have not run any overhead water lines/zones with quick disconnects as some have done in their greenhouses. I look forward to whatever you decide is best for your particular climate and application.. Joe

You can eliminate feeding the chickens by making a chicken feeder for them. Take a plastic garbage can and cut holes in the side at the level a chicken can reach. They make a hole reinforcer for it. You put in 50 lb of feed in it and then just replace it as they eat. Right now with them escaping the chicken netting, it wouldn't work. I also saw an automatic pig feeder where you load it with a couple hundred lbs of pig food in the hopper and it drops into a tray. To dispense more food, the pig must turn dividers in the tray which they do with their pig-rooting instinct. You already have auto waterers.
I would like to see what your property first look liked. I know what it looked like about four years ago. It’s been such a transformative since then. Is it EEK or Yeek this over the edge?

If you put a little piece of colored tape on the poles that are the end then when you go to unroll them they’re easier to find

what about getting a hand sprayer or back pack sprays and doing sections of the paddock/field with a mixture of organic liquid fish fertilizer - put flags up so you know what section you have done - it is wonderful stuff and will feed the worms and the grass getting good growth leading into your summer
they can throw leaves / hay too for grass to start rooting
@@davelawson2564 yes they can on the bigger pasture that was cleared last year but for the existing paddock they are using for the goats and chickens they need something with really zero holding period that just organically produces more and better grass and where the goats will be able to eat that grass within a week with no adverse effects that is why I suggested flags so they could do a portion every week - Al this might be an interesting read the New Zealand organic farming pastoral guide biodynamic.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/organicfarming-pastoral-guide2010-part1.pdf

It's very interesting, your whether compared to ours here in South Africa. Usually our days are 18-20c but last couple days 10-12c, and nights -11c. And it's May!!
Al, I showed my 4 X 4 chicken brooder that I built using your plans. He loved it and plans on making one. My next project is to build me a $30 chicken tractor. That will be over the Winter getting ready for next year. My wife says one project at a time.
It's a hen party in the coop! lol The meat birds are probably liking the change of scenery and loving the clover. Everything is thriving so nicely. Your crops of lettuces and such is looking great, nothing like having fresh cut lettuce. Egg salad, yummy! I think it would be great to see what you started with and how far you have come so far! This is the first time in a long time that one of your videos didn't pop up for me.... Really thought that you didn't make one today. I know that Sunday and Wednesday you don't do videos... Just giving you a heads up. ALSO, and this is very important to me, I live in upstate NY, Albany area... And I'm curious to know how your chicken guard door is holding up. Suffered my first loss recently and it's time for an automatic door.. Just don't know if I should go premium or if I need to go with the extreme... Money is tight, so I'm hoping that I can get away with the premium. I'd sincerely appreciate your thoughts on all of this. Thanks Al!

Geez I need to go to the grocery store; oh wait I have a year-round garden! LOL if I didn’t live in a mobile home park I certainly would. But we live in the woods and anything I grow is going to be eaten by the deer and the native population which I value more.

Buy yourself a poultry hook from Premier One. They are inexpensive and look like a shepherd's hook. You use it to snare a chicken by its legs. I don't know that it will work for the small chickens you were trying to catch, but may if you squeeze the hook smaller. We have one and love it.

We always had a short wire hook to catch the chickens that run. It’s just a wire maybe 1/8” curved on the end to slip around their leg to hold them till you can pick them up.

Figaro was checking out the dinner menu. That crazy cat has never been flogged by a chicken. Our female cat, Ruby, thought she had an easy free meal when we had our rooster a couple of years ago. She went after him and he taught her why endogenous never bother chickens. He flogged her and she ran away and never bothered our chickens again.
I use a large fish net to catch my chickens. Like you catch bass with! Works like a charm! I dont think it was Figaro that got the bird. Just a suggestion, but until you are growing ALL your grain and hay on the farm, you aren’t independent of pesticides, etc in the feed. Even if its organic, some residue from other places probably drifts. I would put some eggs under the broody hen to hatch them out. Be your own replacements.
Newyork City needs to be moved at least every four days if they are following the goat grazing paddock, and daily if they are grazing your field to avoid disease. For more on your soil please check out Dr Ingham's website and for pasture check out Joel saladin.
On our gates we put some wire on a board that hangs up under the gate,stops little animals escaping Try it may stop chooks leave field.

28 May 20 we were last week Sunday Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday 88 degrees and humid. Thursday today 28 May 20 were raining and were going to be chilly at night 40's at night. From winter to summer back to fall. Yikes

1st is if possible to move your birds at night you won't scare them and its so easy without any fight too with others
2nd your ladies are sneaking a lot from NYC better to keep them inside and if they fly you can cut their wings a lil bit you wont hurt them but be sure they can reach the nest box

I still think you're saying 'I like it, nice' should be a T shirt slogan, it always makes me smile when you say it on a job well done! Also another great slogan would be 'Thank you Ladies', that also makes me smile when you thank them for their eggs or milk, but it would make the general public wonder what it meant when they read it lol. Actually, thinking about it, I suppose you could have one T shirt with the 'Nice' slogan on the front, and the 'Ladies' slogan on the back. That would actually be a brilliant one!*!
