I've grown Banana Squash along the top of a fence and they seemed to do just fine. Banana Squash can weigh 15 to 25 pounds each. For that reason , supermarkets in southern Ca. usually sell pieces of 2 to 5 pounds each. The trick is to have something that is strong enough to support the vines. A fence ? It sure saves a lot of ground space and makes the squash much easier to harvest.

Earthworm - no doubt you already know as you zoom in on them - improve the quality of the soil, cause air tunnels to allow oxygen into the soil and turn compost into a higher quality fertilizer. Seems like you have conifers around the meadow - leaves falling off of deciduous trees are pulled into earthworm "tunnels", digested and turned into fertilizer.
They might also improve the soil in the greenhouse further.

    • @donaldmiller8629
      @donaldmiller8629 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ JP dj ,
Just remember , earthworms like plants need to be watered now and then. There will be no natural rainfall inside of the greenhouse. They will improve the ground soil within a greenhouse turning compost into even better soil . A greenhouse , if not used for growing plants during the winter is a good place to house a couple of pigs plus a flock of chickens. They will keep the soil plowed up as well as fertilized. Ready for early spring .

Al and Gina, I admire that you get the meat birds and turkeys on grass. Is there any way they can be allowed to roam, like the laying hens, just during the day? I know that they still have a much better life than they would at a commercial chicken and turkey grower. Y'all are my favorite homesteaders to follow. I really enjoy watching y'all's construction projects - my Dad was a carpenter, so it brings back great memories. Love y'all, and appreciate the words you gave one day about making a five, ten year plan. There are some things I need to get done and seeing how hard y'all work and make plans, it seems do-able now. Thanks for sharing your lovely family with all of us. Love that you're able to have Olivia in the filming. And before I close - Love the baby goats. Them jumping around make me happy. Like little springs in their legs. Thanks again.

High-moisture overnight can promote fungal infections. Tie strings from the structure overhead for support for your cukes, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. After they get much larger, the tender new shoots of your sweet potatoes are delicious.
You might think about putting a bench in your greenhouse for seeding your trays and preparing seedling soil with a sifter.
It would be a great place to collect and process the veggies you harvest.

Two comments today: What about watering your greenhouse and low tunnel plants once a week with compost tea? I've seen other gardeners on YT do it and it seems to give them quite a boost.
Two: Gina, have you ever tried broccoli stalks? They're one of my favorite things. Just cut off the bottom, peel the fibrous layer, then cut them into chunks about 1" in size and cook them with the florets. They taste a little different and I really love them. ~ I love your cooking segments! I've gotten a lot of great ideas for meals watching you and Livy cook. Some I have to adapt to keto, but not very much given your choices. Thank you!

Lauren McW ........yup compost tea is a great........I started using it about 18 yrs ago on high value hardy nursery stock in the UK........it helped almost eradicate the use of botrytisides in the propagation house and works as a great plant tonic, it also works really well with using insect predators to control insect pests as it is non toxic.

Try cooking them in some vinegar water to see if they'll hold color. Those beans can serve as an acid/base indicator. Smush up almost any purple vegetable, let the juice soak into a paper towel and dry. Now smush bits of other things or put on a drop of liquids or put a drop of water and then add salts. The bean juice should change color depending on pH. Acids - red Bases - purple Neutral - green

I was alarmed at how crappy their native soil is. There's a night/day difference between the native soil and the compost. Since he's not using a commercial fertilizer, I would've overloaded the planting area with compost.

Will you be raising the sides of your high tunnel daily for pollination, or will you be manually pollinating your veggies? Nice job on building the tunnel, getting it ready to plant, and planting it.

With weather and finances I have to plant a late garden. I bought almost everything I need. Next is egg laying hens and meat birds soon.

Plant potato's on top of the ground and then put straw over them - you will get a higher yield per plant than by burying them, keeps the weeds away and the straw provides a great way to break up hardpan or other types of "hard soil" to work.

I planted my snow peas today and zucchini ... last fall i let a couple watermelon go bad in the garden .... Today when I was watering and planting I counted at least 70 watermelon plants... so that was a surprise but they are spaced too close and I don't really have the space for all of them... I almost have all my starter plants planted.. then i have a few seeds i want to sew like beets and turnips... anyway... gees its June 1st .. thats crazy .. hugs for all of you

Gina, I am with you. Barefoot whenever I can. Al, I turned my head when the pigs nearly touched the fence but then I involuntarily giggle when they do touch it. Like watching a train wreak.

Hope's back right leg is now brown mid way down not black - when did you give her copper last most breeders are giving copper bolus every 6 months - colour change on the legs is a sign they need more copper - needed for fertility and so many other things to keep them healthy and most soils don't have enough copper in them for goats and that's worldwide

Jason at Cog Hill Farm mentioned this happens, along with the fish-tailing of their tails when they are low on copper.
