Making the frame drum - skin preparation and drying

For the frame drum to have a perfect sound rawhides of different animals are soaked in a solution of ash and water for a limited period and afterward manually de-haired. This labour-intensive, harsh, and dirty task (but natural and traditional) makes a difference in the sound of a drum skin, contrary to harmful peroxide-based chemicals that pollute the water and earth, and make the skin inflexible and dull in sound.
Skins are then stretched to specially-made wooden frames and after drying for several days, they are put through machine thinning, making them even in thickness across the whole surface. This ensures that the membrane sounds pure and tonally clear.
