I really appreciated this video bc I feel like especially in the American girl doll community there is this fear of missing out on new items. I always remind myself am I buying this because everyone is getting it or do I actually love this doll/item. I feel like collecting pleasant company will be really fun and I’m excited to see how your collection changes! Great haul too!
@@Agkit09 Thank you so much! I absolutely fall victim to the FOMO of the community, time and time again. I realized that a lot of my collection has been curated around what I felt obligated to buy, rather than what makes me happy. Time for a change! ❤️☺️
That makes a lot of sense. Just collect what you love and not collect out of obligation. I have quite a few GOTYs, but definitely not them all as they don’t all appeal to me. I needed Lila, but had skipped Kira, Corinne, and Kavi. Summer is a skip.
I’m glad that you’re not selling all your dolls and leaving the fandom, but becoming a more intentional collector is a great way to go. If you have so many folks, you aren’t enjoying them, time to let the ones you don’t connect with go. I’m glad to hear that as hard as it is, you’re stopping the goty collection. When you bought summer, there was no joy in that video, just a sense of obligation. Your dolls should bring you joy.
@@melangellperry5984 Absolutely! Funny enough, buying Summer is what made me realize I need to change. My collection has become more of an obligation rather than something that brings me joy, so im excited to change things up! ❤️☺️
I sold half of my AG doll collection during my 11-year hiatus from being into AG, and even though I've come back into the fandom and am trying to rebuy those dolls, I don't blame myself for selling them. It was the right decision for me in the moment, and even though some of the dolls I sold and I'm trying to rebuy cost a decent amount (like Kanani, who's maybe $100-400 depending on condition) it's not like they're rare and hard to come by (like a 80s pleasant company doll with a rare variation or a Pleasant Rowland signature who rarely go for sale and go for thousands of $). I think your plan sounds well-thought-out and I'm excited to see how it rolls out! I will say I'm glad I kept the most sentimental half of my collection and didn't sell any of them, I would definitely be regretful if I had sold my entire collection. But you're not doing that so I think you're in the clear. 😊
Going for pieces you like is a good idea. There’s just way too much dolls to get whole doll/sets just because you want them. Mixing/matching pieces you love will get you a much more fun doll house to play with.❤
I went through a hyperfixation with the squishmallows and it became honestly out of control. The FOMO was OUTRAGEOUS in that community and when the fixation faded I came out the other side insisting I couldn’t let something like that happen again. I’ve had my AG collection since I was 8 and it’s small but it’s special to me and has always been built on being stuff I truly LOVE and enjoy playing with and displaying. It’s the only collecting I’ve done that I keep coming back too (similar to your hiatuses!) and I feel exactly the same way you’re describing here. I say as an adult collector now that I’d prefer to have a handful of dolls I adore, and the accessories and outfits can be the “collection” around them!
How you are feeling with AG is how I am feeling now. I recently turned 30 and have gotten back into collecting AG as an adult. I've been collecting since the late 90's. My last "childhood" doll was Kanani when I was in high school. After that, I took a break from AG till this year (2024). My now husband supports my collection, as he just wants me to be happy where as when I lived with my parents, they thought I should "grow up" and leave AG behind. Since living with my now husband, I have added Evette, Kit, Mia, and Kavi to my collection in my home. My childhood dolls are with my parents, which I cannot get at this time. But I am in the same boat as you, collecting pieces from childhood that I wanted then. That's why I've added Kit and Mia. Recently I've ordered Saige off of ebay, many of her outfits + picnic basket set in a killer deal! I also ordered some PC outfits that I always wanted: the Paisley dress with tan boots and the Karaoke dress, Kit's pjs. My collection at my current home is tiny, but I believe it'll mean so mych to me if I collect items I wanted previously. I just feel that the newer AG items are few & far between that spark my interest. When Summer was released, I thought she was beautiful, but like you, I don't like her collection. It just looks like a rainbow threw up, and I don't understand the need for colored hair. 😅 The quality isn't there anymore. I wish AG would go back to their roots and focus more on the historical aspect over what's happening now. Maybe I'm biased because I'm a teacher, but I believe that reading those original stories: Kit, Samantha, Kirsten, Felicity, Molly, etc, helped shape me into the educator that I am today and sparked my love for history. I know they are catering to current demographic, but it needs to change. 🙃
Hi Leah. Nice to see you. Everyone needs a break and I’m sorry your kitty had some health issues. I hope she/he is feeling much better. I totally understand your desire to be more intentional with your collecting. Over 100 dolls is exciting but not if you are not enjoying them and not able to display them the way you would like. I look forward to seeing how you curate your collection. Have fun!😃💕
i’m so glad you talked about this!! it’s so easy to fall into mindless overconsumption in any collecting community!! so happy for you and i hope you can find joy in your dolls again 💖💖💖
After Summer McKinny, I have also decided not to really collect the GOTY dolls. For that line, I will limit myself to the DOC with a couple of exceptions such as Lindsey and Joss. I still will collect the Historicals and AG books because that is the brand I know, love, and support, but I am so sad about the books, the quality, and the storyline. I hope they get their act together again soon. Or eventually at least.
I have 30+ dolls and even I think I that’s enough but a lot of them I got when I was 14 and under so I don’t have the balls to get rid of some. I feel like my stopping point is at 50 but even that’s pushing it😭 I would love to see the dolls you’re selling and how many dolls do you want to have in the end?
I’m 22 and have a 9 month old daughter and want to start my own collection after getting rid of my childhood Truly Me. I’ve been sad to see the quality of how things have changed even in the last 5-10 years, when I played with mine! I’ve been looking into second hand and retired pieces to curate a collection that I love and will want to hand down to her!
I totally understand wanting to downsize 👍! You definitely need to do what's right for you, what makes you happy & what's more manageable 😎 About 100 dolls is a huge collection so that must be overwhelming indeed 😮 My daughter lost interest in playing with dolls around age 12 (she's 21 now) so I slowly started to sell them & the AG clothes too 😞 It wasn't easy because we did invest a lot of time & money just like you have but it was time 😔 We still have a few dolls left maybe 7 🤔 Now I collect for myself & prefer Barbie due to the smaller size plus nostalgia 😍
Don't be too hasty. Some are and will be hard to come by. You're so young, you might be sorry down the road. Put some away for a few months and if you still feel that way, then sell.
@@lindaf382 I’ve felt this way for a few years now, so I am confident in my decision. I’m excited for the chance to curate my collection into something that brings me joy, rather than an obligation! ☺️
