Thank you (as always) for drawing our attention to lesser-known Liszt works, and for highlighting the artistry of a wide range of pianists. For those who would like to explore Valerie Tryon's excellent Liszt beyond her participation in the Naxos edition, I highly recommend "A Liszt Odyssey," a 2CD set on Appian (APR 7039) recorded 2000-2001. It mixes familiar and unfamiliar pieces, including a great many of Liszt's transcriptions of his own songs. Two-and-a-half hours of music very much worth hearing and savoring. :) Thanks again for bringing some much-needed light into these dark times! :)
As always, Andrei, your incredible postings, and erudite commentary, is so much appreciated. You're a true blessing to the TH-cam community, Had I practiced the piano (all those years ago) for as long as I've listened to your channel, I'd probably be another Horowitz. You're one of my heros.
Can I ask you a question? I'm wondering if these melodies are composed directly by Liszt as settings of these poems or if all the melodies are composed by these poets. I'm also wondering if anything is half composed by Liszt and half adopted. Otherwise, I really appreciate your work! I found this video by accident and my eyes teared up slightly when I heard these pieces.
These three transcriptions are masterworks. Lockung has this entrancing and enchanting undertone encompassing the work; the leisurely playful and simple melody of Zwei Wege; along with the gallant final Spanish Song, which Tryon plays brilliantly and valiantly, brings out the lightness (along with the “Iberian character”) the piece has. Shame that Lockung is taken at a quite fast speed which I can't say I agree with, but overall great performances of one of Liszt's finest reworkings of oeuvres by other composers.
Perhaps check out August Stradal's piano-transcriptions of Liszt's symphonic poems? His transcription of Mazeppa (not the transcendental etude) is just epic!
Although Stradal's more rightly known for his loyal treatment (and hand-obliterating adaptations) of Liszt's Symphonic Poems, I'd rather see his transcriptions of Liszt's Lieder more actually. He transcribed a lot, not excluding the formerly well known "Es muss ein wunderbares Sein" which is treated in a proper Lisztian manner (with Stradal's usual awkward seemingly unnecessary hand-stretches, but overall a worthy arrangement).
Hey Andrei, thanks for all your uploading! As you know, I have uploaded your videos on bilibili, just to let more people know Liszt more comprehensively. But I'm so sorry for not getting your formal permission. All your video had been indicated the links and source. And now may I ask for your personal permission?I'm sincerely so sorry!
I tried searching for the score on IMSLP, but I was unable to locate it. I would appreciate it if someone could either reply with a link or a location containing the PDF file. Thank you.
