Just bought one for my 30th birthday (April 26th, 1990). And I'm in love with it. In my life I've come to realize there's two kinds of acoustics. Those that cramp your hand if you play too long and don't sound great due to poor dynamic range and then there's those acoustics that have excellent playability that set up easy and every note is strong across the whole fretboard. The 2nd kind with superior playability is the kind of acoustic that inspires song writing and really makes you enjoy playing. My new Martin d10e is without a doubt in that second group. I've only had one other acoustic that fit that category(And I've had a lot of acoustic guitars over the years) and it was an Alvarez acoustic i got for my birthday from my dad when i was 14 and it was stolen a few months after my dad died when I was 18. Ever since then I've been through so many acoustic guitars that were in the Alvarez price range ($450) and I wasn't inspired by any of them. It was more about which one I disliked the least. A few years ago I decided I wasn't going to buy another acoustic till I could buy an all solid wood Martin. I've always loved Martin's, the reason I loved the Alvarez i had so much was because it was similar in build quality and tone to all the Martin's I'd played and loved. The model of the Alvarez i had i can't remember to save my life. Ive looked online, in old Alvarez product catalogs etc. And I've never seen that type of guitar since(It was a mahogany styled wood all around without a lot of inlay. Just some around the soundhole). Anyways back to the D10e. I bought it on reverb from Foxes Music Company (highly recommend them btw). Out off all the D10e Sitka top guitars on reverb it was the one that had the best grain patterns on the top but it was being watched by 5 people already and I needed a good deal so I couldn't just buy it at the asking price even though it was the main one I was after. So I messaged about 5-7 sellers who's D10e pictures I liked and asked if they could do 15% off (since I'd just barely missed out on a 15% of D10e the week before). And only one guy told me "since Martin isn't open right now and they aren't sending new inventory these budget models will go fast so I can't lower the price" he was nice but the D10e's arent flying off the shelves as he would have me believe. Every other seller was really nice, helpful, polite and offered me either a deal or sent me their contact info to arrange a deal. And wouldn't you know it, the guitar I really liked the best from Foxes Music was the one I got the beat offer on. $725 free shipping. I couldn't have been happier but I kept my cool an accepted the offer. When it arrived and I got around to taking it out I wasn't immediately in love. The neck felt a little chunky and it was strung with phosphor bronze 13's. So I removed the strings and the tuning machines and put on a new set of hipshot griplock chrome tuning machines(I love the open back design along with the locking mechanism). The holes for the screws don't match up(the screw hole is in the same direction but a little too short to be pefect drop in replacements) but the griplock tuners come with an optional universal mounting system that doesn't require any new drilling or hole filling. I use griplock tuners on most of my guitars(And Waverly open backs on the others) they are excellent even on an acoustic. After the tuners I put on some 80/20 bronze 12-54 strings and tuned it up. Within a hour or less I was in love. The neck feels perfect now. I also play a seven string very often and I've learned that bigger/chunkier necks might feel off at first but it doesn't take long at all until your used to it and they feel just right, I actually prefer this neck shape now. At first it felt like the performing artist neck shape was getting in the way but like I said after an hour or less of playing it felt perfect. Every single note/fret sounds great. It's so easy to play and I can really get nice dynamics. Or in other words it reacts really well to playing dynamically. Lesser quality guitars really suffer in that area and either need to be played with lots of force to get the top moving or really soft too keep the notes from sounding dead/dull. The Martin string spacing at the nut was strange at first also. The wider spacing has each e string really closer the edge which bothered me a bit at first because it was harder to play with vibrato on the high e but I quickly realized that having the strings closer to the edges really helped make bar chords feel more comfortable. So I actually like the spacing now. But if you find you don't like it changing the spacing is very easy to do. I do my own set ups an build pedals from scratch and do mods to pedals and guitars but with the Martin everything is set up so well that I really don't feel like I need to do anything yet. Even though I went from 13s to 13s the intonation is still spot on which I really appreciated. I'm used to having to do a pretty in depth set up with adjustments to getbthr intonation right on new acoustics but like I said It was great not having to do that with the Martin. And the neck is very straight with the tiniest bit of relief. It's almost completely straight but there's zero fret buzz even when I dig into the strings in places where fret buzz is most common. I think the guy at Foxes Music did a small set up cause he said he did and the bridge had a little bit of black on it(probably from Sharpe used as a guild to take off the right amount of material). I don't mind action being a bit higher then most less experienced players. It helps get good consistently in tone and volume with legatto and just sounds better overall. Anyways like I said I'm in love already it's a great guitar that will only get better.

Mine came very slightly used (pickguard has sheen worn off from manic strumming, but luckily wood fonish is perfect). When I had trouble doing a basic Bm chord I realized that the nut spacing is wider than my Guilds and the radius was flatter than Guild as well. Even so, I only got all 6 notes to sound out half the time after adjusting.
Definitely coated strings and you are right on with being mediums.
So I ordered Tusq pins, I will try uncoated 80/20 Daddario blugreass strings (excellent suggestion again) and I believe the neck relief is pretty flat and the action is outstanding already. Thanks for your insightful observations!

If your birthday was April 1990 and you were 30 ' that'd make you 63 years old now.
I bet it sounds alot better since it's had 32 years to age.
My very first true acoustic was an Alvarez AD60 and I still use it today.. I have to agree with you that it sounds so amazing and we'll built for it's price.

I will say that Ben does some of the best reviews and demo's on the internet. Also, this is the best recording of a D10e that I've heard. I played one of these in GC a few years ago, but passed on it in favor of a limited run solid spruce/solid genuine Mahogany that I got for under a grand with a hard case included. Made in the USA too.
Regarding the neck profile and spec's: I have this Performing Artist neck profile on a 000 10e. I find it anything except chunky, it's my favorite neck profile of all time. I prefer it to Taylor necks and even the Martin modified low oval. Fast, comfortable, I think you'll like it.
The included soft case with this dread and 000 is excellent in my opinion. It's thickly padded and quite rigid. There's a large front pocket that will hold your music books and anything else you may want to carry in a soft case. Nice neck support and dual backpack straps. It's very lightweight and comfortable to carry. It should meet all your needs except for the heaviest use. From the house to the car to the open mic it's perfect. Be aware if you're buying and older used D10e they came with a case that is a little flimsier than the current one, with only 1 strap. Should still be fine for most folks.
If you're on the fence about the D10e, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better A/E Dread for the money. Oftentimes you can buy one with favorable financing and a 45 day return policy. Pull the trigger if this total package works for you. Pete.
I love mine and I have to say I'm really surprised positively by the value for money. Obviously Martin builds some of the best (traditional) acoustic guitars out there, but that tends to come with a price.
For me, the D-10E is the perfect compromise of great tone and build quality, character and price. It just feels great, like 'the real thing' for me at a price that is not cheap, but very reasonable for such a great instrument.
Highly recommended if you're looking for a simple & traditional dreadnought without the bling. It might lack the sparkle of some >2000€/$ guitars, but below that price point you'd be hard pressed to find a guitar that sounds and feels that great at the same time.

I purchased this a couple of months ago and i think it is pretty good, however the action was ridiculous high and couldn't really play it until i shaved down the saddle, now its much better, took it down half a step in tuning and put on light gauge just to help my old hands ...
I have one and LOVE IT .... What a great value in a Martin Guitar. Over the years, I've owned high end Martins and several vintage Martins and this one just can't be beat for the $.

There are so many cheap guitars out right now that use real wood for the fretboard. I just can't do the Richlite.

I purchased a D-10 used and am really happy with it. Build quality really is excellent. Intonation is spot on. Tone is mellow, pretty and chimey. It works well for folky ballad type stuff, but it lacks projection and bite when it comes to more aggressive strumming. My vintage Guild D25 is better in that arena. The all solid wood is definitely breaking in, seems a bit deeper and more resonant every time I play it, and it's just so easy to play, I have a hard time putting it down. It's my first Martin, and if the Mexican ones are this good, I can't imagine how good the real deal is. Definitely made me a believer in the Martin legend.
The only real deal are the top of the line ones. Below that, there's virtually no difference between construction. And if you think that the factory in the usa has no mexican hands involved, oh boy oh boy, you're in for a big surprise.

What a great guitar. I've got a martin d18 that I absolutely love. This guitar sounds great. Loved the tone and your playing was also very good. I'm more in to country and bluegrass, and I know this guitar would work well for those kinds of music. I recently played a d13 that was also a great guitar. The d10e is great and at a very affordable price. I'd love to get this guitar. I'm totally blind so the finish of a guitar doesn't really mean all that much to me. However, I hope if someone is deciding on whether to get this d10 or something else, to grab the d10. Also, if you can play one in person that will also help your decision as well. Thanks again for a great review.

have you found that the guitar top has gotten less white over time? i'm considering getting the guitar and just wondering if the colour changes abit more to yellow, since this guitar top is more white compared to other martins. thanks!
@@TheGuitarGuy161 I've taken the pickguards off of a few guitars I've owned and there is a noticeable outline when you remove it but it fades to match the overall color over time, so yeah it's likely to fade.

i have this guitar, very well made and sounds great, only problem is the finish on it, it doesnt last long and wears down very fast.

Hi all. Looking for a bit of comment section advice.. bought the D-10 last year. Got unplayable last month due to the action around the 10-12 frets. Took it to the shop I bought it from and they basically told me the guitar is a hunk of junk... not just mine, but the D-10 in general... he raised the saddle and adjusted the truss rod and its back in action. He did say he has no idea how long the “fix” would last. Did I get a lemon? Am I doing something that may cause it? Was he wrong??
Hi - that's certainly not my impression of the D10 or any Martin guitar regardless of price - I think it would be best to contact Martin and ask their advice with regards to warranty. Ben

The D10E is the new version of the old DRS2, not the DRSGT. Although they are kind of similar.
The drsgt is now a D-11

Just a blinged up version of my DRS1 but with Sitka top. Ive played guitar 70 yrs and Bg 50 years and finally found the Martin that is
sensibly priced. Is Sapele a knockoff of Mohogany? Maybe. But at a recent band get together my DRS1 held it's own against a 68 D35.
a 2003 D28 and a $5k Collings.
What about the D10e Sapele. Have you tried that one ?

@@scottybt33 I'm a bit late but I just played a couple of each a couple days ago at Guitar Center. The Sapele model had a good tone, but it was a lot more mellow than the spruce. The spruce felt like it had more projection and volume. The Sapele was richer and quieter. Just my opinion. I bought the spruce model.
@@biosec9361 I bought the Sapele one. Yes its not as bright as the spruce but I love the richer bass-ier tones it gives off. Both top guitars in any way shape or form.
@@scottybt33 definitely. I was comparing it (unfairly) in my head to my grandpa's D-15m. But his has had 20 years of playing to open up. I bet the Sapele will definitely get better with age.

Hi, the obvious answer is try both and see, but you don't have to do much googling to find out which has the better spec, and is more reliable. I love the sound of Martin dreadnoughts,but seem to find increasing evidence of belied tops resulting in bridges becoming unglued and necks needing a reset even on £6000+ instruments. By contrast, Yamaha have a reputation for being consistent, playing well out of the box, and stable for many years.
There are many other great though less well known makes such as Furch, who make excellent (truly) hand made instruments many of which the best follow Martins sizes, and traditional build styles. Also, check out Alvarez including the upmarket Yiari models which have a large voice all of their own. The bass projects well, but is not overpowering, and the trebles sweet with impressive sustain due to a clever bi-level bridge design.
Is this martin worth 700$ more than an Epiphone Hummingbird pro ?
Can’t talk about the Hummingbird but I’m an Epiphone guy - my EJ200 was my main guitar for years. Then I got a Martin DSS-17 and the difference is stark (and so it should be for the money). Really night and day. I love both and I still gig with the Epi but nothing has put a smile on my face like the Martin. It even resonates when I’m not playing it!!

have you ever checked out the Yamaha ll16 A.R.E? It's supposed to rival the D-28 at a fraction of the cost. Some people even say its better than the D-28. Would love to know what you think

Probably not since the D28 is rosewood and I think has a nitrocellulose finish on the spruce top.

Sell it without electronics, lower the price accordingly, and let me choose my own. With an Anthem or Fishman Rare Earth / mic blend, you would have a great sounding stage guitar.
The electronics it comes with is pretty good match it with a bose s1 pro or a fishman loudbox mini and you'll be in acoustic heaven
I just brought back a Martin D-18e with anthem pickups. Got it $400 less than what it's sold for (they sell for $3800.00 in canada) but sounded like shit without the pickup and with the anthem pickup. Very muddy sounding just horrible
