I 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗧 Buying My £30,000 Reference Monitor So Much…

- I spent £30,000 to purchase a Sony BVM-HX310 mastering monitor for use as reference in my TV reviews & comparisons, but now I'm so regretting the decision, due to the release of the new Sony BVM-HX3110 which offers many advantages over the HX310, including 4000 nits of peak brightness on a 10% window.

You must "beg" Sony to supply you with this new monitor free, since you are undoubtedly the expert in tv reviews on TH-cam 🌈
Why do you think he made this video for ?! ;)
@@CrashBashLmuh-muh
The video title should read:
"Come on Sony, please just send me one of these juicy Hx3110 - I promise it will be prominently featured in many of my widely watched review videos.
Thank you." 😊
Jokes aside, the chap’s a bit out of date monitor is still so superb that Sony Professional can totally do a fair trade-in program with profit for itself with no special discounts for the chap.
I saw the hx3110 at IBC next to the 310 and it's impossible to show in a youtube video how good these things look in real life. It's insane. And yes the 3110 looks even better than the 310. I've seen a lot of good tv's and monitors, but there's nothing that compares to these things.
I"ll never ever never never never ever make use of 4000 nits in DARK room. Honestly i don't care.
I have always wondered why can’t consumer tv’s not look like those reference monitors? Why is athlete a different display on the reference monitors and not on the consumer ones? And how does that differ in cost?
@@emiel255because it takes effort to make it look that good. Effort that costs a lot of money which is being factored into the price. Otherwise consumer TV's would cost 5 figures which no average consumer would pay. It's about detail work, like handcrafted stuff vs mass produces stuff.
@@Ustaleone Im curious to know the amount of effort those people put into a reference monitor like that compared to a consumer TV let’s say the Lg c3
@@emiel255 my guess as a eletronics engineer in the medical area is that this references monitors need to pass a long and hard tests with way higher tolerances compared to the consumer TVs. Which can make a product cost way more at the end (including labour + costs of doing multiple batchs of some parts to achieve the necessary minimum quality required).
On the one hand, you always regret your purchases when better products come onto the market, but on the other hand it is good when technology in general is evolving. It's a double-edged sword.
Well, if you got money you wouldn't regret paying for what you enjoy...
I agree, as I think companies who buy such high-end professional monitors for their video production studios (or full TV and/or film studios) would generally use them for MANY years, like maybe around 5, 8, or 10 years, during their business accounting periods before replacing them in groups alongside other devices, unless they were to get their accounting departments to make exceptions which would affect their budgets. I say the same for stuff like high-end PC monitors and pen displays since I often see behind-the-scenes videos of studios using older equipment.
The equipment that's still working would often be sold off if the company/studio were smart enough, then smaller companies/studios with smaller budgets could then buy them used and continue using them.
In the case of the latter, I was reminded of a TH-cam video where a small regional TV channel reused one of their older CRT-based PVM or BVM models to monitor some video output.
It would be interesting for you to do a "deep dive" into the technology inside these reference monitors which makes them superior too any domestically available tv on the market.
actually there is a consumer one with blacker blacks compared to this one with the smallest size being 55" or something, i'd wager cheaper too. honestly when i was gaming on my around 30" a decade ago, my face would be 1 foot from the action which cant be done on something much larger while having everything in your front view and cohesive, plus you need the extra processing power to not skip a beat on the moving pictures, honestly get vr and be done with it but no one is doin that either. or get a portable projector for such an investment.
Upgrade #7. hx3110 has an addition 1.
Janitors at Apple are better at naming products than Sony
We all get buyers remorse. 😂
Yes and that is even more true with Tv's/Monitors than most other electronics (typing this with my A90J in the other room).
@@bzdtempbeing an audiophile I beg to differ 😫
@@totalplonker824 Well yes and no.
The thing is that apart from DAC's and maybe home theater gear, most audiophile tech doesn't get replaced by new and better every 12 months. What was an amazing amp a decade ago is still an amazing amp, same thing with the turn table and so on.
Of course things depreciate over time, but apart from say the wear on the needle or something, it is nothing like what we see with TV's and anything computer related.
However what happens in my experience, is that some audiophiles forever chase improvements which leads them to forever replacing new gear. This has two major benefits A. it means a bigger turn over so there is more development and choice for audiophiles and B. A much bigger 2nd hand market with almost new gear to choose from. Being patient my experience you can make great 2nd hand audiophile finds, simply because some forever chase the next improvement.
0:24 holy crap that difference of peak luminance is insane.
This will be my next Gaming Monitor.
Not very high refresh rate though. Also wonder what the input latency would be.
@@djayjpmaybe he will play chech and Go with this monitor. So speed id not essential thing!

-A95L and- Philips 908 review please. Not enough content on this awesome channel.
We have reviewed the Sony A95L here: m.th-cam.com/video/PgNuuQgE7Tk/w-d-xo.html
@@hdtvtest D'oh 🤦♂ apologies, and I've watched that video too (I watch all the videos on this channel). Suffering from modern brain tech stimulus overload.
The 120hz BFI function on OLED screens was the single biggest step forward in display technology for years. How could they ever cut this out? Sony is using 120hz BFI on their latest LCD TV's ilke the x95l. But theireis not a single side or Channel that tests this Feature in Detail. Meaning, how clean is it looking with a 120fps Game? Is it producing ghosting? How good is the precived sharpnes in motion compared to no BFI? How does BFI Impact Input lag?
I know that BFI reduces brightness, but I'm absolutely conVICE(N)T, that motion clarity is MUCH more important than higher brightness!
😂😂 I cannot use any kind of BFI
You need to test the oled steamdeck, it has a build in HDR visualizer just like reference monitors ;)
That's how it always goes with technology. What you buy this year will be replaced next year by a better, cheaper model.
tell that to nvidia (insert company of your choice)
That's why it's good getting the new best TV once every 6-8 years. To enjoy the awesome TV you got and then be more impressed 6-8 years later by the new one you get. For phones and other tech once every 4-5 years. Instead of getting the new best tech every year.
or you can go mid-range and upgrade every 4 years which is a more equilibrius approach, financially its probably a wash@@LueLucifer
Not always. If there’s a product you really want, get it while you can. I’ve seen things come and go over the decades, and not always for the better.
@@jarekstorm6331 Yeah, especially with Sony, every so many years there seems to be an exceptional, over-engineered model that they streamline for the following years' models...
Good to know that even the professionals experience buyers remorse 😅
I feel your pain. This is how I feel when I buy a $20 blu ray and 6 months later the 4k version comes out for $25 haha
That will always happens with electronics, the next better model .It's the circle of electronic life.
Love the yukata, very sharp and comfortable looking.
Thanks, Vincent, for the video .
Such is life…full of regrets.
Wish Sony would make an incredible 4000nit dual layer LCD consumer TV - but I guess there are no economies of scale for that a reasonable price.
Yeah not possible on larger screen sizes at all.
By the time they do that the modular micro-led displays like the Samsung Wall and LG Magnet will be affordable for us mere mortals >.
@@SimplySketchyGT I'm not sure it's that much better than the latest OLEDs because I believe the micro LEDs also have a distracting abl.
this is because of energy consumption and not burning, but this is already the case on oled (the abl is for consumption and not burning)
will be excellent tv but i think not pêrfect.
carful, before oled come everybody told will be the perfect tv too (i remember everybody think oled have no burn when compare with plasma, in real plasma was 100x stronger than first oled)
Would probaly cost over 100k
Unfortunately power regulations for TVs put a stop to that.
Ahh look, I spent £1000 on a Black Friday deal TV, which is a lot for me. It's already out of date, the second I bought it, it'll be obsolete next year and its likely going to break in 6-8 years and that's hoping 🤞
Same with a car, same with anything. My hobby is gaming and personally, is a great benefit to my mental health therefore I consider that needing it, my old tv broke and can't do without.
My point is, it doesn't matter, you cant take it with you anyway :)
Well Vincent - time to sell your HX-310 and bust out the credit card!
Interesting that Sony is using some of the tech from their consumer line like wide angle filter.
That being said - if 65” X95L and 65” A80L were the same price, which would you buy? Which one matches the reference monitor closest with fewer upsetting compromises?
No sense in regretting it. It was the best at the time. Now, there's something better which will always be the case.
There’s always someone with something better. Enjoy what you have, bros.
Come on Sony, give the man the new monitor!
Panasonic you never regret . World best electronic and environment products. Panasonic for life ❤👑.
eugh
It just means you're going to have 2 reference monitors
I didn’t skip the ads so that you can get some cash.
All 0.0000021 cents 😂
Cheers mate! Which TV should I gift myself to christmas? 65" 120hz for around 1.000€
I wish I had known you were in Japan - I'd like to buy you a drink and some yakitori as a thanks for all the advice you've given us over the years!

It is always interesting to see what the cutting-edge tech looks like. Even if I'm way behind on that, I can make informed purchases for my current budget.
Vertical video😢
I regret subscribing to this channel, I don't even have a TV and now all I think about is local dimming, max luminance, ambient light reflection and peak brightness in a 10% window.
How did you afford it in the first place?
This is why I still haven't purchased a 4k HDR TV :D Constant improvements each year just keep me waiting. 10 years and going strong on my current 1080p Samsung TV.
So when do you think they'll stop making improvements? Lmao, you going to wait until oled technology is superceded and grab the best OLED ever made? But then you're using an outdated technology? Ports and features won't be up to snuff.
@@DeCapitanOG That's the whole point of my comment. At some point you need to take the plunge, but it's sod's law that you do it and the very next item to come along is way better.
bro you dont have to break th e bank literally anything is bound to be better then your tv lol
@@egocd ah, the sarcasm didn't come across. Some people really think that way.
if you are ok with that 1080p now, its ok, no one can force you to buy a new one.
I normally only buy a new one when the old one is broken to the hell.
But if you want a better thing, even the lowest in the line 4k LED 43 inches is better than your TV.
From the one whose now use lowest tier 4k LED 49UM7300, 43UQ7500, 75AU7700 as a main TV.
and still using 18 years old Sharp and Sony 1366*768 32 inches LCD every day.
Just go with the lowest one like mine, its ok enough.
Thank you. Excellent explanation.
MicroLED reference monitors when?
I love your content and I got a question , why you never talk about Eizo CG pro monitors ?!
This is me considering spending only $1000 on a tv right now lol
I suggest going a little higher to $1200-$1500. You can get a high-end 55-65 inch TV for that price that's about 6-12 months old and it'll be way better than anything recently released for those prices. I paid €1500 for my 65 in Z9F about 6 months after it released for €3600, for example.
@@thenonexistinghero Over 1000 is way too much for a tv these days,Better to wait for sales a year and a half later
@@Jza-GZa40k Then you're going to be stuck with a mid-end TV at best. The high-end ones don't go much lower than $1000 new for roughly 55-65 inch because almost no store even offers them anymore after a year or 2.
But on the plus side it’s slightly nice to know that even the master Vincent gets buyer remorse and FOMO😂. Makes the anxiousness of buying a new tv a little lower.
Oh my god, you were at InterBEE?! I wish I could meet you
The 3 cons for me are: 1. that they are still not having a HDR toolkit like the DP-v3120. Generally Sony's are poor compared to what visualization option the competition offers. 2. Not personally fan of the extra cost for licensing for LUT conversion etc. 3. Still unclear if they can get customer calibrated, which is a huge con.
I, end user, also don't have HDR toolkit. What is the point of mixing and editing on super expensive screens when your audience is using supermarket TVs?! You know audio engineers (professionals, not home basement "professionals") have a pair of cheap speakers that they use to check the output that most will be hearing and tune the material to make sure people will get to hear what was intended?! Sure, it sounded superb the first time on the XYZ thousands of dollars sound system in the studio, but that's not the system people have now is it? :)
PS. there's nothing in the monitor for you to calibrate. You assume your are more knowledgeable than the engineers that were in charge of the device. You are not. Then again, yes, you can calibrate the screen, you could have done it with the previous one too.
Crazy how much an extra 1 in the name can add to peak brightness
I give you £500.00 for your old one. No need to thank me.
Not so fast..I'll give you £501.00 and I throw in a turkey sandwich.
Hi Vincent would you do a Flanders Scientific vs Sony review/test? Would be interesting to see what pros and cons there are for either when picking a reference monitor
I am happy with my LG C9 and will keep it till C19 comes.
for sure oled tech will die much earlier :)
Regret what? For not living in the future? 3110 wasn't available when you needed a reference monitor, thus you must not regret for choosing the best option which was available back then. With your mindset one can never buy anything.
Its a clickbait advert for sony, masquerading as a personal video
Amen!
You don't really regret it do you? I mean, the newer model did not exist until now so it was the only option and you made damn good use of it whilst it was the only option, right?
Is it time for a Flanders QDOLED mastering monitor? ;)
nope. The Flanders QD OLED isn't bright enough. It's more like an casual OLED with Displayport.
Doesn't Flanders also have an LMCL display
@@raiyankhanmajlis6112 yes top flanders and other top mastering are all dual layer lcd ips
Damn I hate when i buy a product and a new one comes out and has an extra 1 in the name
Yeah they are all a big scam, most technology since 2009 is going backwards in ways since.
Oof, that's some nice upgrades. can the dolby pulsar do 4000nits full screen?
No.
Vincent DOWN BAAAAAAD 😭😭💀💀
Hi Vincent @hdtvtest it’s nearly Black Friday. When is your tvshootout ? I know The Germans done a great job with it and great results and in America there was one done by some Sony biased Sony supplier similar to what Phillips does every year. Is there one this year from yourself ?
@DisplayNAudioTech: Our 2023 TV shootout had already been carried out under strict embargo. We're aiming to publish the result video just before Black Friday.
I have a feeling you'll take these words back once you spend a day with that monitor
hx310 is still better for content up to 1000 nits with its near per pixel local dimming and no viewing angle compensation filter that causes blur (no matter how good it is). Though 4000 nits is 4000 nits, the trade off for someone like you is well worth it.. but you will miss hx310 if you sell it. This is all based on the information you've provided here.
Is BFI on the HX3110 just 60hz or variable refresh at higher frequencies?
I have not had channel notifications from this channel for over a year now !
Is it because he's publishing shorts as main videos for some reason.
Maybe it confused the TH-cam systems
But what about using this with that 12" portable dvd player you don't have? 😂
Just look out the window that is the best reference you will get.
Vince you need to do a display review on the Steamdeck OLED.
Nothing hits like like the first product refresh after buying expensive equipment

I’ll give you a tenner for the old one Vincent
I am working on hx310 and hx3110 both. For a professional coloring differences are minor. 4000nit nobody uses because 1000 is already too bright. Viewing angles are a bit better, but still not ideal.
1000 nits is not too bright.
Its still LCD Technology. That means you have all the other disadvantages compared to Oled. Like Pixel Response time and Viewing Angles.

I would like it to last for 7-8 years. Should I get the S90C and future-proof myself by getting an OLED screen? Or - since I watch good amount of low quality content, stick to X90L. For both devices, I am looking at 77" as am coming from 55". Price difference in my country works out to about 900$ more for going with S90C same size.
Didn't like HX310 at all. It was actually a significant step-down from its predecessor X300
As long as I got a good 3-4yrs of the technology product I bought before a new version comes out, I never have buyers remorse.
Ah well, there is always going to be a better one just around the corner. Sony should just give you a replacement for featuring it so much.
Very useful content for the zero viewers it is relevant to
It's relevant to me as entertaining content, so that's already more than zero
Brother if you had no budget what would be the best monitor for Xbox series X in order to achieve max refresh rate and have the lowest input. In order to have the best competitive edge on an Xbox series x possible and best picture possible. Do you think caping it at 1440p would be best or can the Xbox handle 4k 120hz consistently without a problem?
You often don't get to pick the output at a hardware level - you do on a Playstation though you only get to pick the rendering output if the game gives you the option otherwise it does dumb things like render at 4K and downscale it to 1440p. A Monitor play better with Sony stuff too as they have more compatibility with them including ultrawide (like on Death Stranding).
How does the new Flanders Scientific 31.5” 1000nits UHD 12GSDI QD-OLED monitor stack up against your SONY BVM-HX310?
eh… after the hx3110 there will be an hx3120 with 2000 nits full window, then after that one with 4000 nits full screen
More importantly, you're watching sumo! Hoshoryu all the way!

I think you'll gonna have to keep your yukata at hand.
I would regret spending akmost half of a hundred thousand dollars on a screen as well.
In next few years when Sony release newer version you will regret of buying this "new" model if you buy now of course. This is neverending story....
Brother, you don't know how powerful you are. You are Vincent of HDTVTest, with 531K subs. Let Sony know, and they'll give you the new HX3110 monitor for next to nothing.
Having to buy multiple subscriptions to get full functionality out of a £30,000 monitor seems terribly unethical. It appears that normalizing microtransaction / no ownership business models has poisoned even the highest tiers of professional electronics.
Wouldnt it make sense to lease such a product isntead of buying it?
You should have bought Apple's Pro Display XDR. You'd still regret it, but it costs less.
I thought you said you got it used for 10K or something like that when you first got it?
