  • This Venus Williams video is from a press conference 13 years ago on July 3, 2008. It was semi-finals day at Wimb. 2008 and Venus had just defeated Elena Dementieva in the semi-finals match to advance to the finals. Serena also won her semi-finals match against Zheng Jie to advance to the finals. This is footage from Venus' post match interview at the press conference. The press conference was going well until a reporter asked Venus about Williams family match fixing allegations. Venus immediately clapped back at the insulting question and told the press to move on from this ridiculous question/allegation.

5:00 Here’s where Venus is asked the offensive question. This video is from Wimbledon Women's Semi-Finals Day in 2008 when both Venus & Serena won their respective semi-finals matches to advance to the finals. This Wimbledon was the last time Venus won a singles grand slam when she defeated Serena in the finals 7-6 6-4, with Venus successfully defending her Wimbledon title won the prior year 2007.

@Ni Ko not a bad point, but this controversy had been asked and fully addressed for years and years leading up to this. It clearly culminated at Indian Wells when the teenage Williams and their father faced racial slurs from dozens if not hundreds of rich white FELLOW AMERICANS for a false and unrealistic claim of match fixing. They never even got an apology from the tournament director for not handling the situation better, and to this day some sports commentators and analysts only refer to that racist mob as “alleged explicit language.” It is not “alleged” when hundreds if not thousands can be heard booing and shouting and multiple witnesses confirm the horrid epithets hurled at the Williams for a prolonged period. So for the reported to ask this question several years later was to beat a dead horse and act as though Venus was not sufficient in her innumerable statements addressing this outrageous accusation. Yes, the reporter himself may not have believed the accusation to be true, but he gave it new life and credence by repeating it as if it were novel reporting on a new issue, when the exact opposite was true.

You would not be so cool I suspect if you were asked if you are a cheat and if your family was, would you? What is wrong with people who think only certain people are considered normal when they respond. In. Perfectly. Justified and normal. Way to a provoking highly. Federer learned as a junior that if you feel the least bit sorry for your opponent that you will quickly lose a match. There are so many close friendships on tour--all sports have these friendships between rivals. Either the reporter didn't really understand how a professional athlete operates, or he wanted to say something horribly insulting in the hopes of causing a stir to write about. Reminds me of the ridiculous questions teenagers ask their teachers just to cause a stir.

Venus subtly talking about her Sjegroens sad, she said she felt burnt out, I believe she could have had 10 or more GS!!

I dont think she talking about Sjorgrens. Shes talking about Serena's 2002-2003 period. Serena had 21/2 years of not winning a major so she was very hungry to win titles and didnt let Venus stop her from achieving her goals . Venus on the other hand lost 4 finals in a row to Serena probably bc she really was burned out on tennis having won 4 majors and the olympics by 2002. Venus' mental has always been a see saw . During a match, she's a giant but cumulatively the tennis/training was taking a toll on her, it's why she lost to Hingis in 2001 Aussie semis.

@@co9971 Shhe did not know she had it, of you remember well her withdrawals from Indian Wells and some of the times she said she lost because she lost energy! Symptoms started early as 1998 even after her loss to Martina Hingis Serena mentioned, Venus got tired!!

Venus could've easily won several Wimbledon titles without her syndrome. My unpopular opinion is that she at her best is better than Serena in grass. Btw I'm a Serena fan

It was a wording issue. That’s why one must choose their words wisely. She should’ve said it will ultimately been win for the family and left it at that. The decision can’t necessarily be predetermined. The best player will win. It was a ignorant statement. No need for anyone to try to clear it up. It was already said. It’s only being cleared up because Venus found it offensive. Otherwise, it would’ve remained as stated. It’s not ok. Period.
