The year I turned 17 was literally the most difficult year of my life and I nearly didn't make it. I would tell my 17-year old self five things:
    1. You're stronger than you think, you come from a lineage of warriors
    2. This too shall pass - healing happens one step at a time
    3. They tried to bury you, they didn't know you were a seed
    4. There is power in forgiveness - it's called peace
    5. You are blessed to be here - don't waste another second accepting the title "victim"
And at 39, a few months from 40, these lessons still ring true. And because growth isn't linear, I still need these affirmations every now and then.
Venus, thank you for sharing and opening up - really loving seeing you so candid and vulnerable. Keep them coming, we stan a queen 👸 👏 ❤

My teenage years were so difficult but if I could go back I would tell my 17 year old self to celebrate wins like the Williams sisters. I never felt like my wins in life were worthy of celebrating. I started playing tennis again after nearly 30 years, in the past week, with watching you for tips, you can bet that I did the happy dance after every successful left handed serve and bouncing home after every practice. Well I like your slices too Venus. I always find your slice as really2 solid. I would tell my 17 years old to brace yourself for the world. I was too naive. I thought money is all out there to grab, and I am the best. But when I finished my degree and I started working. Oh boy, there are soooo many more talented, smarter people than I was. It humbles me down a lot. I used to want to be successful so much and prove to people that I was special that everytime there was failure ill get super crushed. I was unhappy. At one point I just wake up and realize. I dont want to be in a high stress environment and always ended up losing no matter how hard I tried. I opted for a less competitive career where I can perform better. I have far less work stress than I used to be, and I am so much more happy. My 20s was wasted doing stuff that I am not meant to be and I was depressed. My 30s was so much better. I like to advice young people out there to really find out what are you good at, dont be overconfident of yourself unless you really are brilliant. Be smart with how you plan your life.
PS : I agree with you. Martina Hingis is a formidable talent. That volley was just sickening.

I would love to see a reaction video to the highlights of what I consider to be your top slam performances: 2000 USO semi against Hingis (with your signature swing volleys), 2001 USO semi against Capriati (probably your peak hardcourt form), 2005 Wimbledon final against Davenport (the classic of classics) the semi against Sharapova was great too; 2008 Wimbledon final against Serena (amazing match and my favorite Wimbledon of all time because both you and Nadal won, he's my favorite male player)...

Okay Venus here we go. This year (1997) is when I found a love for a game I usually disregarded, and flipped past on the television. I grew up in New York, and where I lived tennis was not very popular. One evening I was bored, looking for something to watch on TV, and there you were playing Spirlea. You and I are the same age. Well I’ve got you by a few month’s, but moving on. I was so entranced with the cheers from the crowd, the commentators, replaying the “bump”, which I had missed. For the first time in tennis I saw someone who looked like my sister’s fighting and clawing to get the win. I didn’t understand the scoring, or how the game was played that day. By the final I had done a bit of research and knew enough to watch you play Hingis in the final. That match at my age of 17 totally changed the trajectory of my life. I began playing tennis, hired a coach, began playing leagues and won a few trophy’s when I was 30 or so. I have followed your career, and Serena’s since that day. I finally got to watch you play in person and met you, and we had a quick chat. I’ve never been star struck, until that day I was able to finally meet you in 2010. I’ll save that story for the next video. This message is already a mile long. In short, you had a profound affect on my life, and following your career and the love of the game I have afforded me life experiences I never would’ve had, if I didn’t stop that day in 1997 and watch the 3rd set of your semifinal.
