Crochet Vintage Catghan Sweater Tutorial

  • Hi guys! So, I've seen a few of these sweaters around on social media and I thought they looked so fun and cute! Here is the Vintage Catghan Sweater! This is my take on converting this blanket into a sweater. This pattern is based on Sandra Miller Maxfield's cat afghan pattern. With Stitchfiddle.com, I was able to redraw her pattern with the colors that I chose.
    Materials:
    - Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in "White": amzn.to/3XlxBW0
    - 5mm crochet hook: I recommend amzn.to/3noE9mz
    - Scissors: I recommend amzn.to/43G61Xb
    - Yarn needle: I recommend amzn.to/3CuwV8A
    Original blanket pattern: www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...
This is more of an advanced sweater just because of the sheer amount of color changes, but it becomes easier as you go along. There are also quite a lot of ends to weave in, but you can just... not weave them in. They are on the inside of the sweater, so you can't even see them!
This pattern uses mainly the double crochet (dc), with the half double crochet (hdc) in the back loops only (BLO) for the ribbing, and slip stitches (sl st) to join rounds and ribbing.
The yarn that I used was unlabeled shades of blue that I already had in my stash. I believe most of them are size 4 and 100% acrylic, which is not the best sweater material (and not the best for the environment, I bought them years ago!), but I really liked the color combination! I also used a 5 mm hook and a yarn needle.
    Thanks for watching!

I made this and made some adjustments:
    - front and back panels start with 35 instead of 40 rows of ribbing because it was way to wide, this made the body part to be 70 stitches instead of 80
    - the collar part, I went for a softer neckline, made a curve by decreasing stitches instead of a harsh 90 degree angle turn
    - to do that, instead of 8 rows of 25 stitches, I did a row of 28 on each side, the next 3 rows on top will decrease by 2 everytime, for 3 rows. So it goes 28, 26, 24. Then 4 rows of 22 on top.
    - this is perfect because this means 4 * 4 rows * 2 stitches per row = 32 stitches, 4 * 3 rows of decrease * 2 stitches per row = 24 stitches, 2 * 14 straight stitches across the neck = 28. Total 84 stitches all across the neckline, which is perfect divisible by 3.
    - the ribbings on the collar, instead of finishing a ribbed row, do the 3 slip stitch song and dance, I slipped the 10th hdc into the first of the 3, then slipped that into the next 2. This make a much better foundation for the next row to insert into

(Update at the bottom, please read!)
Thank you for this video! I've been obsessed with this project ever since I saw it and two weeks ago I finally went and got all the materials. Just this morning I finished assembling everything and now I have my own cat croptop sweater in pink. This was my very first experience with crochet and it went smoothly, so if any beginners combing the comments see this: go for it, you'll learn a lot and end with a cute garment for yourself.
I ended up using 800 grs of white and 100 grs of everything else in size 4 (5-6 for knitting needles, 4 for crochet) with a size 5 crochet hook.
UPDATE: LET THIS BE A LESSON FOR EVERYONE ELSE
... I machine washed my garment and let it hang dry and the wool stretched :') I had to undo the join at the arms to frog a few rows to make them shorter but my beautiful crop top is not a crop top anymore. I tried everything to make it better and so far the only thing that's managed to tighten the wool enough for the cuff sleeves to stop at my wrists is machine washing it in a laundry bag and then machine drying it without taking it out.
If you made this with acrylic yarn, LAUNDRY BAG ONLY, and don't hang dry, leave it on a flat surface or machine dry it in a laundry bag as well. May you all learn from my mistake 😭
(I still get compliments by strangers on it all the time, so not all is lost. And its still very warm. Its just not a puffy croptop anymore)

@@kassandracelen2826 been a while since I thought about my process, but if i could go back and change things to make it smaller, I would definitely make the sleeves significantly shorter/thinner in general. In terms of the actual body piece, you could either crop the pattern entirely to better fit, or at least avoid adding too many stitches of white above it when you finish it. I can't say for sure the measurements bc everyone's stitches could be different sizes, but just be aware of how big you are making each piece!

You just need to be patient with yourself. Even an expert once started out as a beginner.
Watch videos. Practice. Then give yourself little breaks. It can get frustrating I know. But eventually the “muscle memory” in your hands will start to kick in and you will surprise yourself. Whether it’s crocheting or knitting, you can DO IT!

Ive only been crocheting for about 4 months. So far I've made 2 double crocheted square cardigans. One cardigan was a size 5x, and i still had to had lengthed ribbed stripes down the front to make it bigger and the otherr was a large. They turned out ok Tension wasn't so great and i used a single crochet to join the first one, didn't like that join, used a blanket stitch to join the other one. Then i crocheted a mosaic bucket bag, this bag tirned out beautiful. Then i crocheted an i don't care bear. It turned out pretty good. I'm now in the process of doing a large sea turtle, but have to get more yarn to finish, Since, I've started a round cardigan, it's stressing me out, so I'm only working a little bit at a time. I've got 2 months to finish it. Now imdoing another bucket bag. My question is this, do you think i now have the skill to crochet this sweater? I have a granddaughter who would love this and i would have 6 months to complete it.

thank you for the pattern! i love how mine turned out!
just a couple comments for anyone making this sweater:
mine is a bit too oversized for me in two aspects:
    1) the sleeves are too long, once i attached it to the front and back panels. i didn't account for how far the front panel would stretch over my shoulder/arm, so the sleeve (which i had made the length of my shoulder to wrist) ended up extending about 7 inches past my wrist.
    2) the collar is too wide and stretched for my tastes. if i could redo it, i would make the tops of the shoulders longer (something like 35 sts instead of 25 sts on side) so then the collar would be smaller. just be aware that the gap between the shoulder parts on each panel will be the width of the collar.
i do like the overall length of the oversized sweater; it's very aesthetic. the cats are perfect and i'm just so proud that i made this myself!

    • @jackiedaw4423
      @jackiedaw4423 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@kiki-eq Yes, you can. You can make the sleeves shorter by crocheting less rows or longer by crocheting more rows. Do less double crochets in a row for your sleeves if you want to make them less wide (just make sure they fit). The length of the sweater can also be altered by changing the amount of white rows at the top of the front and back panels or by altering the pattern
