Make sure you reduce the lug nut torque when you add a lubricant like anti-seize.

Do the grooves need to line up before you start torquing it through?
No, the groves are there to ensure a tight fit, but there aren't any matching groves on the spindle. You just need to start it off somewhat straight and it will guide itself once you tighten the bolt.
