I'm from Lithuania. My father as a teenager and his friends were brutally beaten by the soviet militia (the police of soviet union) for singing this anthem and having a homemade Lithuanian flag in 1984 ( 5 years prior to my birth) on the 16th of February - our independance day, which was banned by the soviets. This anthem (Tautiška giesmė - National hymn) was actually composed for a string quartet by Vincas Kudirka, one of the founding fathers of modern Lithuania in 1898.
Yeah it was grand duchy of Lithuania but less then 20% of people were Lithuanians LoL. And when France and other countries fought civil wars against minorities and something similar this one country here was standing, it's quite I interesting
The best way to experience this anthem is at a Lithuanian basketball match, I've never seen an anthem sang so passionately! It ends with a sense of real triumph.
I agree it sounded quite church like or choral in it's sound with a little flourish at the end. A Baltic nation that eat a lot of potatoes cooked in a variety of ways, they have a national dish of potato dumplings with spiced meat and a cold beetroot soup that is bright pink which I think has a boiled egg in it. The Roop represented Lithuania in both 2020 (which was cancelled due to Covid) and 2021 Eurovision Song contest held in The Netherlands.
Applying my (contentious) method of scoring a National Anthem: If it were my National Anthem, I'd be happy for folks to listen to it before a sporting event, eg. Rugby, and after winning a gold medal. Uplifting tune. I'd be OK with singing the lyrics in public, eg. at a sporting event. Positive lyrics. So that is a fine anthem.
Check out Flower of Scotland sang live by Scotland supporters against Italy at Hampden park 2007 bud and you will see pride and passion in full , brings tears everytime I watch it 🏴
Very nice words to this I thought..Similar rhythm to many and enjoyed the deep tones of, what sounded like, a tuba.Lithuania ,along with Latvia and Estonia make up , what is known as the Baltic States and pre-Gorbachev ,were part of the USSR..I'm guessing this anthem was created when they got their independence back in the latter part of the 20th century.. I'm undecided whether it's a 7 or 8 out of ten from me...let's go mad on a Monday and say 8/10 :)
The lyrics were written and the music was composed in 1898 by Vincas Kudirka. It is a national anthem of Lithuania since 1919 with a ban during the soviet times and reestablishment in 1988.
Creator of Anthem, Vincas Kudirka, in fact, studied in Catholic seminary for a time, before leaving it, and becoming an closeted atheist. Maybe that is why Anthem sounds a bit like church hymn.

My uncles never made it to 1984, they were deported in 1945. Age 19 and 21
Fun fact, once upon a time, Lithuania was the biggest country in Europe. Going from the Baltic to the Black Sea, mind you it was in the Middle Ages.
Didn't know that, Thank you
Yes it was a great multicultural, multireligious "empire" of tolerance. And then The russians came..

@@blueeyedbaer thank you
Fun fact: Lithuanian is possibly the oldest language in the world
I was going to say Dolphin and Whales language is older
But Humour is dead ✌️😳 🏴
Oldest used language, there are older languages that are almost forgotten and not used by people now
Not the oldest in the world. ONE of the oldest INDO-EUROPEAN languages
@@lunarmothcat I think he meant the oldest used language

I hate to be repetitive but sounds like church music 🎶 ❤️🐿
Yeah we are going to be repetitive on some of these for sure. Many are drab

There are some translation mistakes like "Tu didvyrių žeme" should be "You are the land of heroes" instead of "Land of worthy heroes" and some more
❤Aciu
Actually Lithuania has another religion. Its called basketball
Not to Bad at all,
💛💚❤
Fun fact, never sounds good unless atleast 10 ppl or professionals sing it 😅 love our anthem, but you need serious skill for that one
Laba diena
