I've enjoyed following the journey from the outset and when I say that your channel and videos have become the "go to resource" from the various queries I get from folk I talk to on home energy set ups tells it's own story. You provide just the right level of technical detail coupled with easy to follow explanations that are central to folk being empowered to make their own informed choices. And I think the focus now on how to find a quality installer is a great and much needed next step. Well done on compiling such an invaluable resource and as with others, I look forward to the next 50...

I haven't watched all your videos Gary but the 3 or so I have watched are very well thought out and accurate, so congrates on reaching 50 and i do know how much work it is to research, plan, film and then to edit video. 🤕
I know what you mean by getting ripped off as i had 4 quotes here in spain, where there is a grant of "up to 70%" but all quotes after i investigated the equip cost, it was obvious that they had just inflated the quote by the amount of the grant, plus 2 of them obviously didn't know what they were talking about, trying to tell me, after i showed them my plans I had drawn for the structure, (I hate them on roofs) that you cannot have some of the panels at differnt angles, (some optimised for winter and some for summer) didn't seem to understand parallel.

    • @GaryDoesSolar

Thanks Ian - yeah, a lot of work to make the videos, but I do find it very worthwhile, especially when I hear from people telling me that I've been able to help them :-)
Sorry to hear about the pain you're going through out there in Spain. It feels a bit like here in the UK when companies campaign for the removal of VAT from their products citing making them more accessible to customers, but then when legislation is put in place, those product prices simply increase!
On installers not really knowing their stuff, let's see how I get on with the channel - weeding out the wheat from the chaff so to speak...

Congrats Gary, what a great channel you have created. I couldn't believe it when you said you only intended to make one or two videos, funny how life works.
Your videos really stand out, incredibly clear, concise and well thought out. The amount of work you are putting into them must be quite substantial. Your solar utilities are also incredible, you are doing the world a favour by providing then to people at a very reasonable cost, thank you for that.
I don't have a solar or a battery myself but your videos go a long way to get me educated so I can make an informed decision when I decide to go ahead. One decision I am most struggling with right now is how big of battery I should get. Solarazma suggests that smaller is more profitable in my situation but if feel that I will need to have flexibility in the future because tariffs will definitely change with higher solar penetration in the UK.
Residential solar is just starting to take off and the landscape it just starting to form. Looking at markets further ahead of us like California and Australia, they are still figuring it out and electricity pricing models are still evolving. Duck curve has now clearly crossed the ocean and is now impacting European markets like Spain, Germany and Netherlands. Should we expect it to come all the way to the UK? I think yes, but when? 5 years, 10, 15? I think large battery will give me flexibility that I expect will be needed in the future. Maybe an idea for a video, how will solar market look like in future...
Congrats again, and big thank you.

I developed the solarazma tool to calculate a generation per hour per month which I used to establish the likely payback based upon my actual usage data over 12 months. Excellent channel, you're providing an excellent and much-needed service!
You said that you're going to be working on installers soon, certainly needed!!
Our Solar panels and battery were installed in October 2022, following a reference from a friend who had used the company for years.
Despite my research, I subsequently felt that they could have done a better job.
They didn't ask about our daily pattern of usage prior to deciding on the placement of the panels.
And now they want £250 just to pop in to adjust the Wi-Fi frequency on the Solar Edge panel reporting system, which, frustratingly, doesn't have remote control! Luckily, the battery system was able to be adjusted remotely, whew!
After raising a number of concerns, I eventually concluded that our installer and the reference were purely based on their Business to Business work, and that they only dabbled in domestic situations.
By the way, getting an installation in England in October is depressing!

Congrats on the big 50, Gary! Finding an installer you can trust is the most important step. If they’re trustworthy all the technical stuff can be left to them. The solar installation should last many years but may need support, repairs (including under warranty), enhancements and add-ons along the way. The longevity of the installer makes that so much easier. I favour larger businesses with good reviews and a willingness to put you in contact with their customers. If a limited company, it’s worth checking Companies House to check for warning signs. Good climate credentials are a good sign too, especially B Corps. In terms of details, I hear of some companies that seek DNO approval after the event: not good. Some also offer off the shelf packages that don’t require DNO approval (inverters under 3.68kw in my area) without considering what’s best for the client. Given that panels are so cheap now, using all of the available East, South and West facing roof space is likely to be cost effective. With the tariffs that are available these days (especially Octopus!), batteries are almost certainly going to be worthwhile alongside the solar kit. Cheers, Rob

Hi Gary, what’s your thoughts on “solar radiation management” and how it effects the amount of sunlight we’re getting in the UK?
It’s obvious it’s happening giving that the government websites as well as the Met office are openly talking about it but actually denying that they’re part of it over the uk. There are programs whether government or privately funded that are vastly increasing the marine clouds over the oceans that are clearly giving us more cloud cover, more rain and lower temperatures on land.
Is investigating in solar systems worthwhile while this is going on?

    • @GaryDoesSolar

@@GaryDoesSolar thank you for your response Gary.
If you search HMRC>solar radiation management - there are pages and pages on it, as if it’s there for you to get lost in it.
It goes on to say that there are no current programs (last updated in 2020) in the UK but the key is in the detail. They mention that they look to increase marine clouds over the oceans to reflect sunlight back to space and therefore cool the earth, but of course we all know that clouds don’t stay over the oceans, they create wether fronts and travel over continents.
The Met Office also has a video out, done in 2014 where they openly talk about the same thing, cooling the climate by increasing cloud cover to block out sunlight.
I’ve only ahead my solar install done a few months ago and f it weren’t for the almost constant cloud cover I’d be over the moon with it.
It would be interesting to hear your take on this Gary.
Your videos have been a great source of information and a big factor in me making my decision to go solar. Keep it up.

Haha - thank you, Richard! I didn't think I had it in me to make 50 videos, and now I'm looking at the next 50! Lol

Couldn't have got my system up and running as quickly as I did without your videos Gary, so thanks a lot! From knowing nothing to being able to feel comfortable haggling with installers over costs, every video helped.
Going forward, I'm excited to see the future of the UK's renewable rollout with the new Labour government. Will 'GB Energy' make bills cheaper? Will all the new large-scale solar farms mean significantly lower export rates for home solar generators? Will we get to 100% renewable energy by 2030? I'll be staying tuned to hear your take on it all...

Cheers DarkS1m :-) And yeah, I'll be covering energy management at a macro level in one of my videos later this year - just collating all the research for that now...
Really great to hear I was able to (in a small way) assist you in your solar journey :-)

We really need EVs or BVs, with selfplug-in V2G, V2Home, V2Building.
BVs oversized battery makes the home battery look pathetic. 😊
Vehicles are parked 23hrs every day.
Grids are massive $TRILLIONS infrastructure investment and must have cash flow.
When the sunshines on rooftop PV, the cash flow is DEAD.
The grid needs more unloading to remain stable, but also needs to see the rooftop PV uptake not be too fast.
    Just my perspective.
I enjoy your work, I am a bit ahead of the curve with my comments.
But my old CivEng friend from student days is benefiting from nuclear promoters money.
And he makes me angry as I have a Construction career and spent a decade in the generation and transmission construction.
He is totally blind to the big picture.
The political opposition is pushing for a Nuclear Australia.
The sunniest continent on the planet.
    Sahara desert latitudes.
Cold latitude solutions are wrong for warming latitudes and warm sunny latitude.
So I love your professional work.
I love your clarity and honesty. 😊
