American Bandstand 1968 - Presidential Candidates? - Wear It On Our Face, The Dells

  • If you were a teenager, living in southern California in May 1968, Bobby Kennedy would probably have been an obvious choice. In just 17 days (June 4) he would come to town and win the California primary, but there would be a lot of turmoil, including his assassination that night and the Democratic convention riots in Chicago that summer, before Richard Nixon and Humbert Humphrey would be the final candidates.
    While this cool, soulful, song the kids are dancing to was not a huge hit for the Dells, only reaching #44, they would have a Top 10 hit in 1969 with their re-recorded version of their 1956 song, Oh, What a Night. I don’t know if Chuck Barksdale and the Dells ever did move to the west coast.
    Brought to you by Twister…..from “uncle” Milton Bradley. Twister was a flop when it was released in 1966, until Johnny Carson played the game with Eva Gabor on The Tonight Show. By 1967, 3 million games had been sold and it was named “Game of the Year”.
    …..And, the movie Dick Clark needed to grow the moustache for was called “Killers Three”, described as a “Bonnie and Clyde” type shoot’em up film. I’ve never seen it, but it has a 4.9/10 stars on IMDb. I’ll probably skip that one.
    Airdate: May 18, 1968

    What a crazy place and time. Los Angeles just before another tragic assassination, and about a year before the infamous Helter Skelter murders. Kids from other states wanted to move to glamorous, hip L.A. where the beautiful people were. I wish we could get all those happy Bandstand dancers to tell us what those years were like.

    Rest in Peace to Chuck Barsdale from the Dells. I think most or all have passed. I was a teen then too. I'm enjoying this video. Great days.

    Sad news to report, CHUCK BARKSDALE of THE DELLS passed away today, Wednesday May 15th, at the age of 84. He'd been ill for quite some time and was taken off of life support last week. May he rest peacefully.

    This video says so much. I mean this is like late spring/early summer of 1968. Dr. King was just assassinated and shortly after RFK will be killed. I wasn’t born in 1968, but watching this amazing video makes you feel like you’re there.

    BTW The Dells were riding on the success of their first Top 10 pop record at the time with the six minute remake of their own "Stay In My Corner" as well as the title track of the album, There Is. All tunes were produced by Bobby Miller with the late Charles Stepney as arranger (the latter went on to co-produce Earth Wind & Fire, led by fellow Chicagoan Maurice White).

    Interesting that someone mentions Johnson as a potential Presidential candidate--Johnson announced at the end of March that he would not run and would not accept the party's nomination

    The Dells remained in Chicago throughout their lives and career. They never relocated to the west coast. Chuck is one of three surviving members of the Dells. Johnnie Carter and Marvin Junior are no longer with us.

      Bandstand seems like it was a nice oasis from all that turbulence, though I’m sure you were all very aware of it. The show never got “heavy”, no matter what was going on outside.

    Talking about the presidential candidates of 1968. I wonder what would had happened if LBJ had ran against Richard Nixon. Or, if RFK hadn't been killed and won the Democratic nomination and ran against Nixon.

    • @YCDTI
      @YCDTI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Stephen Short in my opinion, LBJ and certainly RFK would have had a much better chance of beating Nixon. Humphrey was never a popular choice. Who knows how Kennedy would have been as president, but at least we wouldn’t have gone through Watergate.

    • @good03boy
      @good03boy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      YouCanDanceToit! Kennedy would've been excellent as president. He certainly would've handled the Vietnam war situation better than Nixon. On the issue of civil rights, RFK would've truly understood things way better than his brother.

      Carolyn Short I wasn’t born until January 1969, but even as a Republican, I wonder too ‘what if’ had Bobby been able to win the nomination and Presidency. As a history buff, 1968 was such a horrid and tragic year. Yes, even some people my age wonder too.

      They actually met on Cinnamon cinder in Long Beach. The episodes they were on together in 1968 I heard were somehow destroyed by accident in the vault. Have you heard of anything like that? I’ve only seen clips of the Brown Eyed Girl episode from November 1968 but not any dance scenes from the episode. The last time I saw it air was on VH-1 20 years ago.

    • @YCDTI

      @@tboling1579 there have been different stories about the original tapes including a fire that destroyed many tapes and another story about a TV employee who found a bunch of old tapes that were going to be destroyed and he gave them to Dick Clark. I think they both are true from what I’ve read. Unfortunately whatever tapes there are, are locked up and protected by Dick Clark Productions, so we are left with these kinescopes. I’ve posted all of the clips from the VH1 color episode. Just search American Bandstand November 11, 1967” (not 1968)and you should find them all. Also, I’m sorry for your loss.

    Interesting comments below and LOVING this video! "Famous Hooks" is really getting down here to "The Dells" while meanwhile the tumultuous world of 1968 stood waiting outside the west coast Bandstand studio. (Regarding the '68 Presidential race: Hubert Humphrey made the mistake of backing LBJ's (to win back favor with LBJ) war stance and turned many off after he originally had opposed the war. As for LBJ, he was in VERY poor health and had been for years. Lady Bird had always dropped hints along the way that her husband would not seek reelection. Voters had lost interest in LBJ's "Great Society" , the Vietnam War dragged on, and of course the untimely deaths of Robert Kennedy / Martin Luther King, Jr. had just about zapped everyone's optimism and hopes for a better tomorrow.)
