    I think you're doing right to go with the flow on meat in a culture where it's almost impossible to be vegetarian. When my wife and I were first together I cooked my meat on the side and added it to the veggie dish she made. I went veggie about 14 months after we were married because she was such a good cook. It took me a month to use up my last pound of hamburger so I thought why bother? What I would find most challenging if I were to do a trip like yours would be the lack of whole grain bread and rice everywhere. When I was in Japan a Japanese man in the grocery store didn't even know the Japanese word for brown rice.

    I really think the only way that you can break rollers ,is running the chain too tight.
    Check the tension with all your luggage on and both of you on board ,then get a third person to check the tension.

    According to UNESCO: “The process of travelling the Silk Roads developed along with the roads themselves. In the Middle Ages, caravans consisting of horses or camels were the standard means of transporting goods across land. Caravanserais, large guest houses or inns designed to welcome travelling merchants, played a vital role in facilitating the passage of people and goods along these routes. Found along the Silk Roads from Turkey to China, they provided not only a regular opportunity for merchants to eat well, rest and prepare themselves in safety for their onward journey, and also to exchange goods, trade with local markets and buy local products, and to meet other merchant travellers, and in doing so, to exchange cultures, languages and ideas.” [Source: UNESCO

    I LOVE markets, so thank you very much for bringing us with you! It is an amazing feeling to be on the Silkroad! OMG, and have you realized there are less than 9000 miles from your journey? If you do the Siberian rhythm, you'll be back home in 1 month! (But I'm sure you don't want to stretch your limits but rather enjoy the last leg ;)

    Get good sprockets with chain otherwise if you just replace the chain the sprocket will wreck the chain. Chain length can be changed with a soft link burred over. The bike will be risky with a split link like on cycle with one end open because it's not strong and secure enough with all the horsepower and torque. It's great you have found a good bike mechanic and if you get it sorted well and do stuff like brake pads, servicing as needed it may save you dropping it. A DID chain will be good. I'm glad he is sorting it out as best as he can. Take it easy, fork seals, bearings in wheels , steering etc and lubing, cleaning stuff should save you money and give peace of mind. Stay safe, wise and well . The handling of the bike will be far better with good tyres too and keep a good eye on brake pads as if the pads wear to metal the brake rotors will wear out and within 25 miles if you use them and the brake rotor discs cost probably £250 each from Suzuki. I know finding spares can be difficult off the shelf. Normally pre ordering is necessary. Suzuki dealers selling v Strom 1050 parts may only be in cities of several million or in places like Turkey onwards so if you have a chance stock up on essential smaller spares like fork seals , pads . Bearing shops or car spares places have certain common sizes that are used on Honda Yamaha Suzuki with the same size wheel bearing depth diameter for example. Good luck . It's a lot of work keeping on top of maintenance and servicing but worth it. Keeping an eye on recommended checks and stuff like oil, filter changes for example. A stitch in time saves 9 and means you are gonna sleep with no worries and feel a big difference in handling like when you replaced the rear shock and wheel bearings. You can't get a better bike for reliability and not much expense. A BMW GS would be less reliable and far more difficult and expensive for spares. Have a great ride to Osh.

    • @Ian-bq7gp
      @Ian-bq7gp 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      God bless you lovely bikers and travellers. I just want you to be safe with a bike that's reliable and with the cheapest maintenance costs. Adjusting and checking rear chain tension all along its length is vital as there are always loose and tight spots on a chain and the play between the 2 sprockets mustn't be too tight as it will wreck the bearing in your gearbox , the bearing behind the front sprocket on the same shaft as the chain cog and a tight chain measured on the tightest part of the chain also must have some play and it can also not do the rear wheel bearings any good. Adjustment should be easy as there are marks on either side of the swing arm and that war your chain and sprockets will last longer and changing gear will feel much better and more positive. The mechanics will be able to show stuff as will fellow bikers and between you and with common sense you will be fine. Just don't tighten small threads and nuts and bolts like a gorilla and you will be fine. We all learn as we go along and your amazing skills on filming your voyages so well is a skill I dont have. Checking stuff like brakes pads, tyres, chain , oil levels and tightness of nuts and bolts is that 1 stitch that will save 9 and Im addicted now to your great adventure stories and the culture and geography too. Things like oil changes plus good oil filter changes sooner rather than going as far as you can like over 5000 miles on semi synthetic oil will make a huge difference to engine life, reliability and mpg as even with the best oils from Mobil for example the oil is already getting dirty and loosing its performance and even with the best quality oil filters and oils , contamination and even bits of metal from wear and tear will get into the oil even with filtration and engine coolant change and front fork oil will mean fork oil seals will last longer and damping will be better and fork gaiters will help keep grit from getting on the fork legs stanchions which will protect the chrome too. Keeping linkages like pedals greased, swing arm bushes too, shock linkages , brake and clutch levers and steering head bearings being well greased as Suzuki and other makers skimp on the grease in the factory. If you find a great mechanic in a cheaper country for labour and can get good quality stuff that's not Suzuki genuine spares like DID chain, its superior to genuine Suzuki chain and sprockets at half the price and DID is the world leader in bike chains and £100 should get you a top quality chain off of eBay from a competitive supplier cheap, same with brake pads , motor cycle news may have adverts online for good makes like EBC , same with bearings, oil seals, filters etc as there's many after market quality part makers in Europe, Japan and USA that make stuff to ISO 9001 spec or better. I've worked in bearing and oil seal, circlip and loctite, Dow Corning product wholesalers years ago and later worked in engineering which has fortunately taught me a few bits of knowledge and skills over my 63 years that's been useful and I hadn't a clue 50 years ago and it's like learning at school but now so much is on you tube on how to fix and service stuff which we never had when I was young. In some places on your travels you've probably seen some amazing ingenious fixes of machinery and some of the skills of some in places like Pakistan and Central Asian ex russian countries are amazing and they keep old transport going and rebuild and repair stuff that a fitter in more advanced economies would replace, your rear shock before your recent new one comes to mind. It fascinates me some of the ingenious and cheap ways they get over problems and I have been watching some great welding and machining skills on you tube in Pakistan where they rebuild lorries, busses, cars, repairing crankshafts or even cracked and broken engine cases or even structural stuff on heavy duty diggers for example that would've been scrapped years ago in countries where labour costs made them uneconomical to repair and often where craftsman skills have become obsolete amongst the workers.

    I think there's something else going on with the chains doing that, I don't think it is too loose but could be wrong. Chains don't stretch as such, it's more that the sprockets wear which causes the chain to get more loose over time. But too loose is often better than too tight.
    As usual, you've done a great job Ollie with the history and unique facts of the area.
    What a cool market! It's always a great experience seeing where the local shop to get a feel for how they live their day to day lives. Kyrgyzstan seems like an interesting place! 👍

      I found out the hard way years ago with bald tyres, broken chain even on motorway using a secondhand chain and split link on a Suzuki GS1000 thrashing it. That was in 1986! Being around a bike club and doing courier work taught me a lot and doing a motorcycles maintenance night school ten week evening course was the best £40 I spent but my working with metal welding, fabricating, measurement and machining helped a lot and now with so much on you tube you can even learn to diagnose and fix some electrical problems like voltage regulator, rectifier and battery issues which can happen often on 1990s Honda Vfr750 and 800s. The problem is weight and room to carry tools and essential spares unless you have a huge bike with panniers and top box .
