    I love that. This would also allow you to take advantage of sales on wigs that don't come in any color you want!

    Here’s a tip for your silver ladies. I bought the Arteza alcohol markers in the grayscale, only $20 for 36 markers. They are beautiful and make customizing my wigs so easy! There are warm grays, cool grays, neutral grays, yellow, blue and green grays. The caps make it easy to hold the color next to the hair and you can test fine pieces on the underside of the wig. I just finished a wig that was originally a pale blonde with an apricot hue to it. I am cool colored so it wasn’t going to work for me. I used the caps to find the right gray and chose warm. I had 9 colors to choose from that I worked through the wig. I even flipped it over and used some of the darker tones underneath for some depth. By the time I finished I had a gorgeous custom made wig! Now the apricot is throughout the wig and the entire wig is a sandy gray with kisses of apricot. I am a dark brunette/gray but with the right makeup I can not wait to wear this.
    I used a styrofoam head on a post and sometime just held the head between my knees to see down the part. Sometimes I pulled out small sections and sometimes just a few wisps. Sometimes I colored all the way down the fiber and sometimes I faded it out. All in all, it was a total blast! And now I have my own one of a kind beauty. Have fun. Take it slow. Stop often and step back. God bless.😮

    I’m a natural light ash blonde shot through with white (seems like more white every week lol), and I’m frustrated by the few non-rooted blonde colors available in toppers these days.I’ve used white hair spray paint to cover dark roots and it looks decent- like I have light graying roots. It takes away the shine so the hair actually looks more natural. I brush some blonde hair powder here and there over white spray painted roots and it pulls everything together. I may try adding white highlights using the white hair spray paint.I do it in the shower to keep from getting spray everywhere. The painted hair is just a bit stiffer, like it’s been hair sprayed. I don’t like the too-yellow blonde spray-on root covers available, and I’ve tried many. I’ve used light taupe Copic markers in the past to add pale ashy shadow rooting to platinum blonde toppers- worked great! My next project will be toning a too- warm topper to get it more ash in tone, using Rit dye and alcohol, per some TH-cam videos. Wish me luck!

    It is AMAZINGLY realistic, would not even know it had been altered (and I didn't, even looking closely, wow)! This color is really different from straight to wavy to curly and from unit to unit. If doing this makes a wig more wearable for someone, it can save some $$$, for sure!

    @LS-lr7xl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That's a great transformation of the original color. Looks professional and believable. They really look like the altered one came like that right out of the box. GREAT job! Haven't needed to try altering the color on any of the pieces I have, but think what you have done is so clever and, btw, both colors look amazing on you. 🤗

    You really have amazing and interesting content! What a great idea this is. I just went thru this with a topper and I used the root spray. It worked, but it did leave the hair a bit heavier. So then I added dry shampoo to lighten the fibers back up. But like you said before, The more you put in, the shorter the wear time in the long run. You end up washing it more, and it wears out! Thanks Denise, you are so creative! Blessings, Lynda

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really don't like how root spray weighs the hair down and changes the texture, and I've found it doesn't wash out very easily (or at all in some cases)... what I love about the markers is that they do not change the hair texture AT ALL or weigh it down. I'm planning an updated video showing other colors and even FUN colors that can take an older blonde wig up a level.

    The one you colored is beautiful! I’ve got a pale blonde, short haired wig that I would love to do this to. I’m a little hesitant about it because I paid $175 for it at a wig store and it was not returnable. At the time I thought I would like the color. But I don’t and I rarely wear it. Maybe I will get brave enough to try this technique. Thanks so much for this tutorial. It was really helpful and well explained.

    Thanks so much for this, Denise! I'm going to buy a Copic marker tomorrow. I have worked with the furniture markers on one of my Paula Young wigs, and although successful in the beginning, I was not happy with the color it turned when I washed it. I'm going to try the Copic over those sections. I think this is a great technique, especially if you have a too light wig that is non-returnable. ~Jill in SoCal

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you have better success with these, Jill. I used the furniture marker on my Girl Mono and thought the color faded beautifully on that one, but hard to say how it might be different on a blonde wig vs an auburn (which is the color of my GM)

    Copic markers are alcohol markers used with paper crafting. (1000s+ TH-cam videos). There are many colors available as sets, especially "skin tones" which are tans and browns. If you over color the wig hair, it might be possible to remove some of the color using straight isopropyl alcohol applied using a cotton ball on synthetic wigs? Also, there are permanent alcohol ink pads which could allow for an application technique similar to frosting or highlighting bio hair, with an ink barrier such as aluminum foil. Sharpie markers are also alcohol ink based. I use Hulu markers from Amazon online. Because of the range of colors (100s!) it is possible to have fun adding wild colors to platinum wigs for parties, celebrations, and cosplay wigs, always applying colors to light, not dark, synthetic wigs.

  • @katylowe3504
    @katylowe3504 ปีที่แล้ว

    So good. Love the instructions. I bought a set of Copic markers and a 'natures colors" tans and brown Sharpie set. First project is trying to permanently lighten the wefts of a wig. The hair is light ashy blonde but the wig was made with a really dark cap and the wefts show horribly! I complained to the small midwest wig company and they don't take returns and saw nothing wrong with a dark cap for a light blonde wig. Your video has given me confidence to tackle this task because I can't in good conscience sell this wig to anyone else (at $80+ it was the most I've paid for a wig).

    I bought a Paula Young wig, Sunset in Caramelized Brown that was too light for me. I had taken the tag off and couldn't return it. I bought some alcohol markers at Hobby Lobby, their own brand, Master's Touch. Which were on sale. I chose Mahogany, to start with as I worked on each section. Using the pointy brush end, using the side of it along the strands. Then I used chocolate brown for darker brown strands on that section. I covered the whole wig working a little at a time. One quarter of it the first evening. Then half of it the second evening. Then the other half outside on a sunny day. Then I used a darker chestnut brown for the top root area and some darker streaks at the top. It turned out so pretty. It's now a deep reddish brown.

    Denise, not all furniture markers are created equal. Some run when washed. The Copic, or any alcohol marker is very permanent. Have you found this over time? As you say, there may be fading, but with the alcohol, the wash water is not discolored. I want to darken a JR 14/26/10. I just don’t know if should give it a base color with rit dye. Any ideas? I love your deeper Mia! Oh, when you’re marking curls, I found that the cardboard paper towel roll is perfect to wrap the curls over and then hold down to color.

      Well that is new information to me so THANK YOU!! I have not had any issues with them at all, but I haven't rooted that many wigs. I did notice, though, that when I washed a wig that I had rooted with a Copic marker the water wasn't as dark as I expected... I had no idea that it would not be because of the base of the marker. I LOVE the cardboard roll tip... gosh you have given me so much good information!! As for your question about RIT dye... I have not tried using that before but I believe Rachel from Rachel's Wig reform has... I would think that if you want to make a significant overall change then that would be the way to go. Good luck!!

    I know this is an older video, but hopefully you'll see my question. I have a white synthetic wig because my natural hair was turning white before I lost it. I had a human hair wig that matched my original dark hair perfectly (I actually bought it several years ago from your friend Sherry because I live about 30" from her), but I've lost my eyebrows, so the darker color is too stark.
    I'm just wondering if I should try starting with a blond low light and work my way up to a medium/dark brown low light, just because I'm working with a white wig. My natural color was very dark (my profile picture), so maybe the darker brown might be okay?
    Thank you so much for your channel. I wish I'd had it 5 years ago when this all started. I'm still struggling with wearing wigs and mainly stick to baseball caps but I'm trying some of your suggestions to see if I can get used to them. The hardest part is that my neighbors and friends have all gotten used to seeing me in a baseball cap so I feel self-conscious suddenly having hair, LOL.

      The only way I know to add a light color to a dark wig is to use a light root spray... Loreal makes different color Root Sprays (meant for covering up gray regrowth between hair colors) in a blonde shade, I have heard of people using that.

    I'm wondering about another possible application, similar to the alcohol/rit. As a crafter of many years I'm very familiar with Comics and other alcohol based markers. You can pull the dye out of the marker by just soaking the marker in alcohol. You can also buy reinkers for any brand of alcohol markers I think using the alcohol ink in a spray bottle in layers would definitely work. I'm going to try it soon in a blond I got from Amazon.

    • @reginahay5211
      @reginahay5211 ปีที่แล้ว

      Autocorrect. Ugh. Copic and Tim Holtz and even some cheaper Amazon alcohol markers all would work the same. Not water based markers. They would was right out if it rained. Temporary use only.

      Just leave it dry (it really dries pretty immediately). It is fairly permanent. I have noticed that it fades with washing (and the water turns really dark) but doesn't fully wash out. If you want something not permanent you can use root spray (meant to cover up roots between colorings)... Loreal makes one.... or if you have just a small area to do you can try eye shadow.

    • @heywigsister
      @heywigsister  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it will take forever, but it will definitely take some time... the outside won't be as hard as getting the inner layers... I would recommend you just go weft my weft, starting at the bottom and clipping up the top ones and then lower a new one as one is finished... you might need more than one marker so keep that in mind.... I also notice that it does fade some with washing, so keep that in mind.

      Hi, Joyce! I would say it is semi-permanent.... it doesn't come off on your clothes or your fingers... but it does fade a little when you wash the wig (and the water will look SUPER dirty). You may have to touch it up a bit after watching, but probably not much. I did this to my Girl Mono wig and didn't feel the need to touch it up, although I could tell it did look somewhat lighter after washing so I know it faded (and man that water was dirty so I know a lot came out in the water).
