🇺🇸 EL PASO, TEXAS | Is the USA SAFE?! | Mexico to USA BORDER Crossing | Mexico TRAVEL 2022

  • 🇺🇸 EL PASO, TEXAS, USA - Welcome to Mexico! Huh? Ok, this is part 4 of my 2022 Mexico series, but while staying in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua (the previous video), I decided to head across the Mexico/US border over to El Paso, Texas, primarily to compare and contrast both sides of the border in the US and Mexico, and secondarily to sarcastically stick knives in those who constantly highlight Mexico as being DANGEROUS or not SAFE, purely because those saying that are white, western, English speakers. Considering the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting, the question is, IS THE USA SAFE?
    We check out some things to do in El Paso such as Hotel Paso del Norte and it's spectacular early 1900s Dome Bar, with its Tiffany Dome and Titanic-esque decor, St Patrick's Cathedral, Coffee Box, streetcars, Las Plazas District, the Office District, the main shopping street across the border, San Jacinto Plaza and in general, the Downtown area. As someone who appreciates 70s/80's modern US skyscraper architecture, I loved El Paso!
    I also cover my experience at the Mexico to USA border crossing. Is it a place solely for illegal immigration? I have done an overland Mexico to US crossing before, but 17 years ago in Tijuana/San Diego. It was an interesting and vastly contrasting experience depending on the direction!
    If you're thinking of embarking on Mexico Travel in 2022, my channel is a good place to start. I've been to 22 states and (nowadays) visit some more less-common states in northern Mexico such as Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa and so on. Plus the more common classics like Guanajuato, Mexico City and more if you're into more of the expats in Mexico or moving to Mexico business! (not my thing!)

    🇺🇸 I hope you enjoyed Part 4 of my Mexico series... in the USA! Especially if you're new, the whole point of this video was to be a slightly indirect stab at those in the US (and UK!) who deem Mexico to be dangerous yet have never been there, and never question their own back yards. Some of my best friends are from the US, and I know the feeling of animosity towards Mexico and Mexicans is very much a feeling of the minority, so I wasn't generalising here.
    It's also a stab at the ridiculous, outdated and tired, 'Is Mexico SAFE?!' garbage rhetoric perpertuated by TH-cam couples for views with the aim of attracting retirees. Change the record, Karens.

      Hey Armando! Yes I found my short time in El Paso to be very welcoming indeed! I thought the contrast was crazy from that shopping street by the border and downtown, it was like Hotel Paso del Norte was the real border! Isn't California more welcoming than EP? You know the state of Texas where we were under alot of heat and controversy? Just saying cus you said "the most welcoming border towns in the planet" which is clearly not true. Let's give El Paso some truth here, we're pretty restricted cus we are still a part of Texas. This is still a pretty republican dominated city over here.

    I was born and raised in El Paso. Safest city on the border! Juarez is our Sister City. Very diverse city as we welcome soldiers from all over the world to Fort Bliss. I was born here in 1956. Loved the alligators whe I was a kid. Best food in the known and unknown universe. Best restaurants are L&J's right next to the central cemetery. Also Carlos and Mickey's on Magruder, and Kiki's on Piedras. Welcome aboard!!
    Also, when Elizabeth Taylor was filming the movie "Giant" (it was further southeast in Marfa area), they stayed in one of the downtown hotels.

A couple weeks ago I went on a 10k run in the Franklin Mountains, and I just saw the Van Gogh interactive exhibit is coming. A few weeks ago, I saw an amazing exhibit of Ortiz pottery at the Museum downtown and enjoyed some delicious food at the Plaza Hotel’s Ámbar restaurant.

    Thank you for your candid, but positive, comments about the US. Every country has its good and bad, and comparisons are of little value. Media seems to want to dwell on the bad, so it is important to take the time to get to know the people and to understand the issues and problems.

    Just ran across this video, I live in El Paso and half my life in Juarez, wished I would’ve known to have seen a couple or more places and details… the De Soto hotel was a haunted building that had haunted tours but recently in last month suffered a fire. The Plaza hotel downtown was the first ever Hilton and the penthouse suite was where Elizabeth Taylor lived while married to Conrad Hilton. But anyway, thank you for your video had to watch.

    I'm happy you took the time to check out the city I call home. The DeSoto building definitely has seen better days but the reason it looks run down is because it was in flames a month or two ago. Juarez is definitely massive in comparison to EP. Granted though you only got to see downtown. We also got Westside, Central, Eastside, Northeast, Far East and the Lower Valley. I personally love how we border with Mexico and New Mexico, we can travel to another country or state within an hour.

    For El Pasoans or those who come here from other places in the US and Canada for dental care or healthcare treatment, we avoid most of the chaos of the border crossing because most of the clinics in Ciudad Juarez also provide complimentary transportation services for getting across the border. If living in El Paso, a van picks us up at our homes and returns us. For others, they usually pick up at downtown El Paso parking garages or hotels.
    As David said, when crossing into Mexico there are no checks of any kind and no stops, we just go right across the bridge and into Juarez. And this the same case for anyone driving into Juarez in a private vehicle as well. Mexico is an open door... 'Bienvenidos a todo del mundo!'
    Returning, we remain inside the van while crossing the bridge in traffic until we reach the immigration building (the van is air conditioned and has complimentary beverage service). Then, they let us out and allow us to cut in front of the people waiting in line and we walk right into the building. Once inside there is usually no wait in the American line and we walk right up to an immigration officer. We come out the other side and get right back into the van. Couldn't be easier.

    I wish you would have been able to see more of El Paso, like hike the Franklin Mountains or check out McKelligon Canyon. Hopefully you will return and have a little more time.
    As far as safety, El Paso is one of safest cities in the nation. I think most of us feel that El Paso is comfortable and safe. The Walmart shooting was someone that traveled here to do harm, but hate did not prevail and our city grew stronger.
    El Paso may be small, but it feels big because most of us consider our sister cities of Juarez and Las Cruces, NM to be a part of it. I hope you return and have the chance to explore more. Until then, safe travels.

    XD your comment about how there's stuff to do downtown was eye opening. Growing up in EP, I always had that usual sentiment that there was nothing to do! There was no reason to go downtown unless it was for the holiday parades hosted by Viva EP or to get pan from Bowie's bakery, or passing by downtown on the drive back from the Franklin Mountains. But hearing your genuine awe at architecture, appreciating the wall art I've grown accustomed to seeing, made me realize I took so much for granted. Seeing how you got so excited over EP made me wish you were able to explore more of what EP had to offer! you didn't even scratch the surface, haha! I know you ripped on yourself for being a "dumb tourist" but I found your enthusiasm endearing! Really enjoyed the video. Thank you so much! Lately, I have been considering a move to El Paso, since I work remotely and the cost of living is so cheap. I've only spent a little bit of time in the city, but I lived in Juarez for 2 years when I was a Mormon and a missionary and I really enjoyed the people, the food, and the weather. I didn't even mind the hot summers, although I probably destroyed my skin by walking everywhere in 100+ degree weather with no sunscreen for two summers. The other plus is that I'm now fluent in Spanish thanks to that experience, even though I'm no longer religious, so I think I could possibly fit in and enjoy ELP. I still go to Chihuahua a few weeks out of the year, but I haven't been back to Juarez or El Paso in many years. Something about El Paso just feels like home to me.

      No worries man, I know it's probably a minority that has these backwards views. Literally every US citizen I know is brilliant. The point about unconscious bias and deep-rooted beliefs was meant to be a mirror of what I said in Juarez. Like white people can have a superiority complex (even if they don't actively believe that), and some Mexicans I know (again a minority) seem to have a deep-rooted inferiority complex. I always remember being out with a friend in Puebla a few years ago. His words, 'I'm just a Mexican guy' echo in my brain every day. THERE IS NO 'JUST' no matter where we are from.

    Well done sir! One of your best videos ever! Beautiful photography, thought provoking and funny (especially your Dallas title credit sequence!). I know your retirement is imminent, but you could do a great series of videos as an outsider exploring and critiquing US cities and Americana. I was surprised when you said this was filmed on a weekday because the city center looked dead. That is one of my beefs with so many USA cities - I hate the wide, barren pedestrian unfriendly streets. I had a long time friend who grew up in Ohio and lived in Houston for many years. She came up to visit Vancouver and kept commenting that she couldn't believe how many people were on the street - walking, sitting at cafes, hanging out. That leads to the topic of safety - those deserted streets, even at mid day, seem scary, I feel safer, in Mexico, Canada or the USA in vibrant areas where there are people around night and day. Oh, and guns vs knives? I'll take the knives please.

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! I couldn't resist the Dallas sequence LOL. Yes it was very quiet! I saw a few office workers out on their lunch breaks, that was about it. Speaking of Vancouver I actually mentioned that one part looked like that area with that famous clock (you know the one), but it got cut! Re American yes if it was a few years ago and I had more money I'd love to do a USA series but at this stage I'm basically like an old man ready for his armchair LOL

    • @Vancouver_Dan
      @Vancouver_Dan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidostrowski679Oh, the Gastown "steam" clock, on Water Street, which is actually not run on steam - just a clock retro-fitted to attract cruise ship passengers who elbow each other out of the way every 15 minutes or so watch it erupt steam?!? On another note, your subscribers should have a poll to see how long the 40 year old grampa takes to get bored of his armchair and start flying drones over kioskos. Anyway ... looking forward to the rest of your series!

    I was in el paso during the Walmart shootings. I was doing Uber at the airport which wasn't far from Walmart/ Sam's club where it happened. Absolutely crazy day, one day I'll never, ever forget.
    The coffee box is my favorite place to get coffee in town! Now i want to go stop by it haha.
    You should come back in Christmas time, downtown is beautiful, even more so at night.
    That de Soto hotel just recently burned down this year, it was supposedly one of the most haunted hotels in Texas. Italian restaurant near it is really good also.
    I used to live right near that crossing... that road getting into Mexico is an absolute nightmare, cars always blocking the intersections, at night is like almost nonstop honing for a few hours, even emergency services have a hard time in that area during the afternoon when everyone is trying to get into Mexico.
    El Paso is a great city, i wasn't born there, nor do i live there any more, but it is the largest city I've ever held residency in, and is a very unique city for Texas, being closer to the capitals of Arizona and New Mexico than Austin, and Cali is about the same distance as Louisiana is to EP.

    Hi, David! Your Ciudad Juarez and El Paso videos are brilliant and I'm so glad you got to see our sister cities! The drone shots in both cities are stunning!
    As for the border crossing, there's always that enormous line coming into the US because of the screening. There IS NO LINE returning to Ciudad Juarez because Mexico just says, 'Bienvenidos! The door's open, come right in!' And I've always found that so fucking ironic.
    I've never seen so little activity in downtown El Paso but I think it's because everyone is still working from home because of Covid. And you are correct, Ciudad Juarez has 1.7 million people, and El Paso has 975,000. Downtown is but one small isolated area of El Paso which sprawls out in three separate directions. The city goes up the West side and Northeast side of the mountains and out to the East and Southeast, with an enormous military complex separating the Northeast from the East side. Going from one section to another can feel like traveling to the other side of the earth.
    Those are actually crocodiles and it's known as 'Los Cocodrilos'. It was restored a few years ago, and if you can believe it, they're just made of fiberglass. DeSoto Hotel just burned up a few weeks ago and they suspect homeless squatters had been living inside.
    It was funny as hell seeing you become kinda nutty being in the US! And it was so psycho hearing you shifting between Brit, American, and Mexican accents with Espanol mixed in! When you said you felt like you were on crack it's little wonder you got a headache! This video was crazy ass funny and one of your best! I'm so glad you were here!

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes that border so fucking ironic and rather telling re the relationship between the two and attitudes of both. Some guys were checking some backpacks of another guy but I just walked through! Yep I filmed this on a Weds afternoon, I saw and heard a few office workers near Wells Fargo (one bizarre moment, we were at a crossing, the two ladies were deep in conversation about work, and one just crossed the road mid sentence and left the other one standing there lol)
      I loved El Paso! My kind of place. When I leave Mex, I'm seriously considering coming back for maybe a week!

    I remember back in the 60s getting on the bus (the old rounded style like any movie about the South Jim Crow era) to downtown to take in a movie. Then to the Kress department store (the company that later became K-Mart). She would buy some material for creating a dress or blouse for herself or for my sister. As you walked in, the building had curved windows with items for sale in those windows. As you walked in the floor was sunken so that you could see the whole floor of the store from the entrance. Along one wall was a long sit-at-the-bar cafe with the spinning chrome seats with the red leather seat cushions. You could watch them make your food on the grill or watch them pour out your soda at the spigots. The cups were like snowcone cups held in a stainless steel holder. Cherry Coke had to be made (it hadn't been bottled yet) by getting a squirt of the cherry flavor from the ice cream topping pump and then filling it with Coke from the spigot. There was Lime Coke offered also. French fries were freshly cut before frying and the hamburgers had that homemade fresh taste. The toy department was big and I was left there while my mom made all her purchase choices. The registers were at stations around the store on top of bagging cabinets filled with different sizes of bags. I can still here the metal bell sounds of the register ringing up the sales (that's where the term "ringing up the sale" came from) and the "POP" of the bag being snapped open with the flick of the wrist. Then back to wait for the next bus home.

It's rumored that a lady had brought them over and she had put them into the water that was there and before it was just a deeper area of water. Unfortunately one of the alligators died and they were poorly mistreated and often got trash thrown at them so they had to get the alligators removed. Years later they had put the statue up and my grandma often took me to downtown as a kid and would tell me a lot of stories.

    AMAZING VIDEO! Me and my friend who are El Paso locals watched the whole thing and loved what you said about it. A bit sad you didnt leave the downtown area, If you ever get a chance to go again you should go check out University of Texas at EP its a beautiful area, also going to the mountain would be a great experience at night because you can see the lights all the way to Mexico on Scenic Drive! The hit artist Khalid mentions it in his music.
    Another secret even El Pasoans dont know about is White Sands national park. If you have a car and dont mind driving out a couple hours you'll be able to see white sands which looks like an entirely different planet! Not just light colored sand, its an ocean of pure white salt and fine so it looks like snow, surrounded by mountains but without the cold! Surreal place to see and will probably wow your non American viewers lol you can get some great shots and video footage there.
    And one final tip, many El Pasoans have never left El Paso so they hate it there and will tell you it sucks, tell you to go somewhere else, but they're mostly just sick of being in the same place for a long time. Its an El Pasoan thing. I was like that too until I left and realized all the little things I took for granted. Now I love my hometown!

    Ignore the people saying that El Chuco isn't safe. It makes the list of top five safest USA cities (usually #1 or 2) year after year after year.
    Fort Bliss deserves a mention; it's larger than Rhode Island. And, for the curious, the Colón theater was named after Cristóbal Colón: the Spanish name for Christopher Columbus.

      Totally John! I never thought it was unsafe, the title is really a stab at all the TH-camrs who rely on the whole 'is Mexico safe?' thing for views haha. I didn't know Fort Bliss was larger than RI! Crazy!

    Another great video - thanks! I remember the El Paso skyline, but not much else! Your comments about homelessness are on point. I have seen way more obvious evidence of homelessness in Birmingham than either Lima or Mexico City! Did you get a new FMM when you went back into Mexico? If so, did you get 180 days again? Also, how did they record your exit from the US if you weren't stopped? I have heard stories (which may or may not be true) about people having trouble getting into the US because they had crossed into Mexico overland and there was no record of them leaving the US.

    • @davidostrowski679
      @davidostrowski679  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man there were some unexpected events! Entering the US, my FMM wasn't even looked at and wasn't taken off me. No stamping of passport either. So basically I still have the original FMM with the same original 180 days from when I first arrived. We'll see what happens when I leave Mexico lol

      @@davidostrowski679 interesting! I remember that when I went to Mexico via El Paso/Juárez, I got a Mexico stamp and tourist card when I entered, but did not have to give it up when I left, and was not even checked when re-entering the US (where I was at college). At the time, I don't think Mexican immigration used computers, so there was no issue with not handing back the tourist card.

    Subscribed and solely because of what you said during your unconscious bias - I agree. Been to Mexico twice, always loved it. Never felt in danger. I am a native Texan. I grew up between Lubbock and Amarillo up in the panhandle. I grew up in an enriched Mexican community. I was one of few white people, but never felt as if I was a minority. Most of my best friends are Mexican and I feel the Mexican community is real, compassion, endearing, and very family oriented. Mexicans are welcoming, warm and love long winded conversations. I live on the east coast now, different demographics over here. There is a sheer difference of personality of the people as a whole. People are not so hospitable here. People are more self-centred and always in a hurry and pretty demanding as well. It's noticed in the service industry especially, as people expect what they want *right now* and do not like waiting. It's the American mindset. That's why I wanna move back to Texas, but more particular, El Paso. I want to live in the southwest deserts again, and I feel El Paso is a warm and welcoming city overall. I feel like it's home and I have never been. It's people that make a difference. People who are warm, kind, compassionate and open make the best communities. I miss home.

    Funny: I will be going to El Paso in October. Considering moving to El Paso in a few years and want to check things out more.
    Also, went to London and Brighton back in March of 2019. Absolutely loved Brighton and found the people to be very warm and friendly. Going up to Scotland and Manchester next year ( damn I hope I can understand them with those thick accents lol) anyway- great video!!!

    I’ve been researching places to relocate too and El Paso has become so interesting from my online research I’m flying there and renting a car next month for a visit. I’m hoping I will want to list my house after my visit.
    Same reactions from almost all my friends is ‘ OMG, isn’t it dangerous??’ Then I show them online where our city ranks for safety (we are in the far North) and always I am rewarded with a stunned expression from my friends. It’s hilarious.

      I'm from New York and I have my brother in law and his wife, former New Yorkers, who have been living in EP since 1992. My husband and I visited my in laws and fell in love with the weather, cool in the mornings, warm and the hot. There is a.lot more to see in El Paso and we decided to move here. We did more research before moving here and El Paso was No. 1 safest city in the U.S. back then in 2001. It was No. 1 for several years but it never goes above 6 safest city. It's almost always sunny, and we love when we get rain. I have seen more Broadway shows here in EP than in NY because you don't pay exorbitant prices. Same for concerts. I have seen the Rolling Stones, Van Halen, James Taylor, Shakira, Marc Anthony, and many more diverse artists. There are a lot of free and.low cost activities here. Houses are extremely affordable. Thank you for visiting El Paso and providing a positive perspective.

    Very cool video! I’d love to show you around El Paso and teach you about it if I could. Couple random facts: The De Soto hotel is a historic hotel (about 115 years old, I think?) but only a few weeks before this video, a big fire unfortunately broke out and caused lots of damage. And I like the random tidbit about John Wesley Hardin. He is actually buried in El Paso as well at Concordia Cemetary, pretty close to downtown. :)

    Thank You for showing El Paso, Texas, through your lens(eyes). As you travel further in the city there are quite nice modernized living communities. lt is a desert after all. It's really grown and changed especially the last 20 years. I'm also from Puerto Rico, which is a totally extremely different place (an Island 🏝️) I still find El Paso, Texas is still kinda old fashioned mannerisms which is quite refreshing after living in the bigger cities in the U.S. Very nice video. Muchas Gracias .😁
