i would avoid a big server and go with a smaller server. servers like rustified or rusty moose are going to be very anti beginner. i have 1100 hours on rust and had someone say "welcome to rust" as he killed me because i still had a spear 4 hours into the wipe. the server had a 200 person queue and i just got in. Lol. small 75 - 150 player solo - duo servers are probably a good place for new players to start out.
PLEASE DONT JOIN LOW POP SERVERS, dont join servers with 30 or less players becuase you learn nothing by basically playing by yourself solo, play on a 80 pop server minimum to actually learn something and get more experience
I made a small wooden house and forgot to lock my locks, when I came back to see what happened the guy that raided me gave my house back without knowing it was mine. I told him and we became allies and we teamed up with my friends and his friends to help eachother
Okay. Instead of complaining about the mistakes made in the video, I want to correct some of them, and add things incase that is needed. What server to choose? Like said in the video, a low population server will usually work quite well with quite a small map (you can sometimes find information about the map in the description, and there is also the small bar that will tell you whether the map is Procedural or something else, e.g Hapis). The best way to find a low population server is by looking at the community tab, these are servers that are created by random rust players, and will usually not provide the best quality of servers, but it'll work for now. However you don't need to start on a low population server, you can just aswell play on a map with more people if you like the PVP aspect of Rust, and don't care too much about the survival aspect of the game. You can try modded, but personally I find it a bit bland. If you do like the gun action of Rust, then I suggest you don't start on wipe day. It is very primitive, and there won't be much gun action, and it will make it tougher to do much. What do I do now? I find that this video largely skipped the scrap system of the game, and instead talked more about farming. There are many ways to get your first bow, and arrow. I personally like to run to the closest road (press G to access the map), and hit some barrels with a wooden spear, and then go to the closest recycler, and recycle the components I have gotten. At the start you want to be looking for items like sewing kits, tarp or rope. Recycling these will get you cloth, which can then be used to craft bandages, clothes, and your first bow. If you don't like this method you can also just go the route of picking up hemp, and crafting a bow that way. If you spawn close to an animal, better yet a bear, you can go and hit the closest tree gather up a building plan, spear, and a bit of wood, and place the foundation down close to the bear. Then bait it in so it stands close to the foundation, and start poking it atop the foundation with your spear. It will not be able to hit you, unless you jump down. Once the animal is dead you can hit it with your rock until you get enough bone fragments for a bone knife (this has a very high flesh gather rate) to farm the rest of the bear, which should get you almost enough for a bow. You can also take the risky route, if you find a nearby bow wielding player you can try to gather up a spear, and then run at him, hold right click, and throw the spear at him (if it hits the head it should knock a naked with about 70 health) to get a bow quicker. Base or action? Once you have acquired your first bow, you can do one of two things, try to risk your first bow, in killing an even geared player (snowballing) or taking the safe route and building a base. I suggest that as a newer player you make a base first. You might think that you will be able to pull a play like Hjune but it is a lot tougher than it looks. If you are feeling lucky you can craft yourself an eoka pistol (the best way to kill a geared player at the very start) and listen for some closeby shots. If you are going to try your luck, don't just run at them, if they have a gun, they will shoot you. Instead try to get behind them, and aim them in the head. Get extremely close or your just going to lose what you have. Don't go for many shots if you can hear just one person shooting a semi automatic rifle, or an SMG, then that is your best chance. If you decided to take the safer route, then avoid all action until you reach your desired base location. My suggestion for newer players is to build close to a bigger monument (e.g water treatement plant, train yard), and one smaller monument as your recycling spot (supermarket, oxum's). This will allow you to get to action at the bigger monuments, and also have a safe place to grind for scrap. As for the biome, it is largely up to you, grassy has most the action, snow is cold but has more nodes, desert is flat. When you arrive at your desired spot, slap down a sleeping bag so if you die, you can respawn there, and not the beach, take a quick look around the are, if there aren't any massive bases then start farming up. Get stone, wood, maybe one or two nodes of metal, and skip sulfur for now. What base should I build? Whether you acquired a gun or not, its time to build a base. I suggest you build just a plain old 2x2, it works great, and is not tough to build. You can also build a 2x1, but I find that you usually run out of storage quite quickly, and I don't have this problem with a 2x2. The design is up to you, but like I said I would build a 2x2. In the video, the base building was quite tough to follow, and there were quite a bit of mistakes. Firstly, upgrade the god damn foundations, someone can easily break in, and squeeze under the base to get all of your loot. Build an airlock, whatever you do, the worst thing that can happen is someone sitting behind your door, killing you and stealing all your loot for free. So where your front door is add a triangle, and make the doors close into each other so they make a sort of small gap, which you can't fit through. After you have done this I would still split the base into pieces, add doors where you can, and you can also add triangle foundations with walls, that block the sight of the inner walls from the outside, this is called honeycombing. Despite what the video says, even if you are in a group, don't give keys to everybody, if someone dies with it, the person that gets it can open your doors. Instead the person who locked, and placed the lock, should stay inside, and open the door for the others, until you can upgrade it to a code lock. If you are solo, no need for a key either, the person who placed, and locked the door, can open the door without a key. Remember to also add a lock on your tool cupboard. How do I get a gun? There are many ways to get your first gun. You can kill somebody, find it in a crate, do an event, or go to oil rig. For the people that are playing on a server with little players, it can be tough to get a gun. I would go and do oil rig, with a compound bow, if it isn't too tough. You will need a red and a blue keycard, which you can acquire from doing monument puzzles. There will be scientists, that have great loot, and there will also be crates. The big thing however is the locked crate. If you start hacking it, it will call in a round of heavy scientists, which will be tougher to kill, but once you do, the crate will usually have atleast two good tier guns, and other components. If this doesn't sound appealing you can try to kill somebody. The best ways to do this, is to craft an eoka, which is a shotgun, that can one shot, a geared player, but from only very close. Or a compound bow, which is kind of like a sniper bow, which can also one shot headshot a hazmat suit. You can also go to a locked crate, or go to the cargo ship. The locked crate will be the easier option, because you just have to wait 15 minutes, and you will get the exact same thing as what you would get from the oil rig crate. The cargo ship will have 3 locked crates, but they will be protected by scientists. This can be an easy way of getting your first gun, as there are no heavy scientists. What is after? The end game consists of raiding, and AK PVP, this will be hard to reach on your first wipe, but if you do I would suggest training your AK spray, a tiny bit on some PVP servers. Raiding is very tough, and it will require sulfur, a lot of it, but can bring riches. Your first raid should probably be an offline raid, just because online raiding is a hole new thing. Wow! This guy really showed people how to place a lock and then DIDNT lock it. Then proceeded to upgrade walls and left the foundation "THATCH". Its called twig
Do not build in the snow unless you are an experienced player, yes the snow may have less people but when you find people they are way more geared than the rest of the map because the snow is farm central. Any small base in the snow is also considered farm bases to raiders meaning they will raid it thinking you are loaded. Also the snow is cold... You will die... Live in the greens generally away from flat areas as that is where clans build. The desert is also a great choice however resources are scarce there.
Yeah when i was new i use to craft keys lol it seemed it like common sense. I thought that was the con of the wooden lock but its accutally for teams early game. I was legit hiding keys in bushes lmao

In the army I learned about the two party system one cook's food the other shoots. I'm new to rust so I find the best shooter and grind for that guy while learning the game . Also found a server that only does PVP once a week with a monthly wipe. Allowing a chance for my learning curve . Also stay off of global chat that just makes players hunt you down. Lots of players take pride in making a list of global chat names. Like it's a kill list. Also don't team up with a guy who can't stop running his mouth on global cause your a convenient target next to that player.

Not a big fan of this one GM. You didn't touch much on base design, which is crucial, especially if new players think they're going to get away with twig foundations. I also think the suggestion about using keys is just not the best, instead, I would advise new players to just open the door for their friends until they can get a code lock secured. Not my video, so you can do whatever you want with it, these are just my annoyances with the video.

I have 2k hours and know my way around rust and the biggest thing I can say about beginning to play is to be patient. This game is so damn hard and makes you mad a lot. I also recommend watching veteran rust player livestream becuase it shows how the best of the best play along with how to make plays a very large part of rust and also to get a sense of the time it takes to play an official server. GL and it gets better.

Will I have fun as a casual player? most days I don't wanna play more than an hour or 2, and some days not at all, is there a point for me? I love pvp games but I'm guessing this one might be too much of a time sink to compete with all the neckbeards playing 12+ hours a day
Do NOT create a key if you don't have teammates to use that key, you don't need to create a key for yourself, you can always open your wood locks actually, never create a key, just don't do that, at all instead focus on getting 100 scraps to make keylock, wooden key is easy way to completely lose your base
remember, he said he hasn't played in a long time. keys used to be mandatory for locks. i only learned recently that you didnt need keys when i started playing again and i have over 1000 hours in the game. Lol
So, can people still just break into your house when you logout? My only experience with rust is spending like 5 hours making a house and collecting things then the next day all of my stuff is gone and they put their own doors on my house to lock me out. But I spawned inside so I was locked in...
Never, and I mean never make a key..... that is something that you should literally never do Just lock the key lock and if you have friends make code locks instead

While this guide is great and hits on a lot of the big basics, there’s quite a few things I would say need to be explained, first would be building in the snow is nice because of the lack of clothing for other players, but that’s a double edged sword and goes for you too, no cloth means no progression, furnace splitting was another big thing I noticed, middle click for 1/2, shift + middle click for 1/3, as it will smelt 3 stacks instead of 1. More explaining on how critical it is to protect your tc at all costs is important and crafting keys was one part I disagree with, as it puts your entire base in jeopardy if someone kills you and takes the keys. When you spoke about gathering low grade fuel it would have been good to explain how crude oil can be refined, and lastly I think it would have been more helpful to go more in depth about monuments and their value towards gather scrap and materials, along with different tool types and tiers

Being Honest Here: The base you built sucked, you built a 3x3 which as a solo is useless to you because you're not even in a clan. Second thing is your space management, you need to start placing stuff closely together because everything in your base was so unorganised. LAST THING TO SAY TO NEW PLAYERS: Build trap bases to trap new players / people with loot, you can just take their stuff without doing anything, works every time.
Tryhard players and griefers, hard to master combat system and survival system that’s punishing, high pc spec requirements, toxicity around the block. Sounds like an average Tuesday to me! Been gaming since 1999 and this is the best game i have ever played. Im 25 and been gaming since ps1 in diapers. Rust is the best game ever made hands down no cap no exaggeration. I assumed it was gonna be a boring kiddy minecraft type of game. Boyyyy was I wrong. This is the most addicting game ever. You wont even wanna go to sleep its THAT good. Most underrated game I ever played. This game should be the only game talked about. It has everything man. The best 1st person open world pvp i ever seen or played. Check it out if you havent. How many hours has this TH-camr got because I have 3000 and I don’t agree with many of these tips. For example when someone starts they should never play modded it will ruin the genuine rust experience and never make keys it is always bad. Plus upgrade foundations before walls. Idk if this guy doesn’t have many hours as I have never watched him before but this video is the top recommended when a fresh TH-cam account searches rust, so I thought he would have to be pretty good.

It is very primitive, and there won't be much gun action, and it will make it tougher to do much.
What do I do now?
I find that this video largely skipped the scrap system of the game, and instead talked more about farming. There are many ways to get your first bow, and arrow. I personally like to run to the closest road (press G to access the map), and hit some barrels with a wooden spear, and then go to the closest recycler, and recycle the components I have gotten. At the start you want to be looking for items like sewing kits, tarp or rope. Recycling these will get you cloth, which can then be used to craft bandages, clothes, and your first bow.
If you don't like this method you can also just go the route of picking up hemp, and crafting a bow that way.
If you spawn close to an animal, better yet a bear, you can go and hit the closest tree gather up a building plan, spear, and a bit of wood, and place the foundation down close to the bear. Then bait it in so it stands close to the foundation, and start poking it atop the foundation with your spear. It will not be able to hit you, unless you jump down. Once the animal is dead you can hit it with your rock until you get enough bone fragments for a bone knife (this has a very high flesh gather rate) to farm the rest of the bear, which should get you almost enough for a bow.
You can also take the risky route, if you find a nearby bow wielding player you can try to gather up a spear, and then run at him, hold right click, and throw the spear at him (if it hits the head it should knock a naked with about 70 health) to get a bow quicker.
Base or action?
Once you have acquired your first bow, you can do one of two things, try to risk your first bow, in killing an even geared player (snowballing) or taking the safe route and building a base. I suggest that as a newer player you make a base first. You might think that you will be able to pull a play like Hjune but it is a lot tougher than it looks. If you are feeling lucky you can craft yourself an eoka pistol (the best way to kill a geared player at the very start) and listen for some closeby shots. If you are going to try your luck, don't just run at them, if they have a gun, they will shoot you. Instead try to get behind them, and aim them in the head. Get extremely close or your just going to lose what you have. Don't go for many shots if you can hear just one person shooting a semi automatic rifle, or an SMG, then that is your best chance.
If you decided to take the safer route, then avoid all action until you reach your desired base location. My suggestion for newer players is to build close to a bigger monument (e.g water treatement plant, train yard), and one smaller monument as your recycling spot (supermarket, oxum's). This will allow you to get to action at the bigger monuments, and also have a safe place to grind for scrap. As for the biome, it is largely up to you, grassy has most the action, snow is cold but has more nodes, desert is flat.
When you arrive at your desired spot, slap down a sleeping bag so if you die, you can respawn there, and not the beach, take a quick look around the are, if there aren't any massive bases then start farming up. Get stone, wood, maybe one or two nodes of metal, and skip sulfur for now.
What base should I build?
Whether you acquired a gun or not, its time to build a base. I suggest you build just a plain old 2x2, it works great, and is not tough to build. You can also build a 2x1, but I find that you usually run out of storage quite quickly, and I don't have this problem with a 2x2. The design is up to you, but like I said I would build a 2x2. In the video, the base building was quite tough to follow, and there were quite a bit of mistakes. Firstly, upgrade the god damn foundations, someone can easily break in, and squeeze under the base to get all of your loot. Build an airlock, whatever you do, the worst thing that can happen is someone sitting behind your door, killing you and stealing all your loot for free. So where your front door is add a triangle, and make the doors close into each other so they make a sort of small gap, which you can't fit through. After you have done this I would still split the base into pieces, add doors where you can, and you can also add triangle foundations with walls, that block the sight of the inner walls from the outside, this is called honeycombing. Despite what the video says, even if you are in a group, don't give keys to everybody, if someone dies with it, the person that gets it can open your doors. Instead the person who locked, and placed the lock, should stay inside, and open the door for the others, until you can upgrade it to a code lock. If you are solo, no need for a key either, the person who placed, and locked the door, can open the door without a key. Remember to also add a lock on your tool cupboard.
How do I get a gun?
There are many ways to get your first gun. You can kill somebody, find it in a crate, do an event, or go to oil rig.
For the people that are playing on a server with little players, it can be tough to get a gun. I would go and do oil rig, with a compound bow, if it isn't too tough. You will need a red and a blue keycard, which you can acquire from doing monument puzzles. There will be scientists, that have great loot, and there will also be crates. The big thing however is the locked crate. If you start hacking it, it will call in a round of heavy scientists, which will be tougher to kill, but once you do, the crate will usually have atleast two good tier guns, and other components.
If this doesn't sound appealing you can try to kill somebody. The best ways to do this, is to craft an eoka, which is a shotgun, that can one shot, a geared player, but from only very close. Or a compound bow, which is kind of like a sniper bow, which can also one shot headshot a hazmat suit.
You can also go to a locked crate, or go to the cargo ship. The locked crate will be the easier option, because you just have to wait 15 minutes, and you will get the exact same thing as what you would get from the oil rig crate. The cargo ship will have 3 locked crates, but they will be protected by scientists. This can be an easy way of getting your first gun, as there are no heavy scientists.
What is after?
The end game consists of raiding, and AK PVP, this will be hard to reach on your first wipe, but if you do I would suggest training your AK spray, a tiny bit on some PVP servers. Raiding is very tough, and it will require sulfur, a lot of it, but can bring riches. Your first raid should probably be an offline raid, just because online raiding is a hole new thing.

Do not build in the snow unless you are an experienced player, yes the snow may have less people but when you find people they are way more geared than the rest of the map because the snow is farm central. Any small base in the snow is also considered farm bases to raiders meaning they will raid it thinking you are loaded. Also the snow is cold... You will die... Live in the greens generally away from flat areas as that is where clans build. The desert is also a great choice however resources are scarce there.
i dont recommend creating keys just open the door for your team until you get a codelock and if you're solo you dont even need a key
Yeah when i was new i use to craft keys lol it seemed it like common sense. I thought that was the con of the wooden lock but its accutally for teams early game. I was legit hiding keys in bushes lmao

In the army I learned about the two party system one cook's food the other shoots. I'm new to rust so I find the best shooter and grind for that guy while learning the game . Also found a server that only does PVP once a week with a monthly wipe. Allowing a chance for my learning curve . Also stay off of global chat that just makes players hunt you down. Lots of players take pride in making a list of global chat names. Like it's a kill list. Also don't team up with a guy who can't stop running his mouth on global cause your a convenient target next to that player.

Not a big fan of this one GM. You didn't touch much on base design, which is crucial, especially if new players think they're going to get away with twig foundations. I also think the suggestion about using keys is just not the best, instead, I would advise new players to just open the door for their friends until they can get a code lock secured. Not my video, so you can do whatever you want with it, these are just my annoyances with the video.

I have 2k hours and know my way around rust and the biggest thing I can say about beginning to play is to be patient. This game is so damn hard and makes you mad a lot. I also recommend watching veteran rust player livestream becuase it shows how the best of the best play along with how to make plays a very large part of rust and also to get a sense of the time it takes to play an official server. GL and it gets better.

Do NOT create a key if you don't have teammates to use that key, you don't need to create a key for yourself, you can always open your wood locks

So, can people still just break into your house when you logout? My only experience with rust is spending like 5 hours making a house and collecting things then the next day all of my stuff is gone and they put their own doors on my house to lock me out. But I spawned inside so I was locked in...

While this guide is great and hits on a lot of the big basics, there’s quite a few things I would say need to be explained, first would be building in the snow is nice because of the lack of clothing for other players, but that’s a double edged sword and goes for you too, no cloth means no progression, furnace splitting was another big thing I noticed, middle click for 1/2, shift + middle click for 1/3, as it will smelt 3 stacks instead of 1. More explaining on how critical it is to protect your tc at all costs is important and crafting keys was one part I disagree with, as it puts your entire base in jeopardy if someone kills you and takes the keys. When you spoke about gathering low grade fuel it would have been good to explain how crude oil can be refined, and lastly I think it would have been more helpful to go more in depth about monuments and their value towards gather scrap and materials, along with different tool types and tiers

Being Honest Here: The base you built sucked, you built a 3x3 which as a solo is useless to you because you're not even in a clan. Second thing is your space management, you need to start placing stuff closely together because everything in your base was so unorganised. LAST THING TO SAY TO NEW PLAYERS: Build trap bases to trap new players / people with loot, you can just take their stuff without doing anything, works every time.

Been gaming since 1999 and this is the best game i have ever played. Im 25 and been gaming since ps1 in diapers. Rust is the best game ever made hands down no cap no exaggeration. I assumed it was gonna be a boring kiddy minecraft type of game. Boyyyy was I wrong. This is the most addicting game ever. You wont even wanna go to sleep its THAT good. Most underrated game I ever played. This game should be the only game talked about. It has everything man. The best 1st person open world pvp i ever seen or played. Check it out if you havent. How many hours has this TH-camr got because I have 3000 and I don’t agree with many of these tips. For example when someone starts they should never play modded it will ruin the genuine rust experience and never make keys it is always bad. Plus upgrade foundations before walls. Idk if this guy doesn’t have many hours as I have never watched him before but this video is the top recommended when a fresh TH-cam account searches rust, so I thought he would have to be pretty good.
