24:24 808 is an homage by Shinji Mikami's Tango Gameworks video game studio in Tokyo - owned by American company ZeniMax Media, which owns Bethesda Softworks - to another Japanese innovator, the late Ikutarō Kakehashi. Winning a 2013 Grammy Award for co-inventing MIDI, "Kakehashi's inventions are credited with shaping popular music genres such as electronic, dance, hip hop, R&B, rock and pop music." "The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, commonly known as the 808, is a drum machine manufactured by [Kakehashi's] Roland Corporation between 1980 and 1983.... The 808 was eventually used on more hit records than any other drum machine. Its popularity in hip hop has made it one of the most influential inventions in popular music, comparable to the Fender Stratocaster's impact on rock. Its sounds are included with music software and modern drum machines and it has inspired unlicensed recreations."

There's a game in a similar vein to this game that came out a few years ago by name of No Straight Roads. It's definitely worth checking out and looking into. Hi-Fi Rush does have *amazing* production value and deeper mechanics over it, as well as just... more, but NSR is a game that I'd hate to be forgotten. It was the debut title for its dev studio, and the devs have clear vision, imagination and talent, and i'd say they deserve more support and attention. (Similarly so for a hack-and-slash/character action game by name of Soulstice that came out last year. Kinda rough in parts, but still does a lot of good stuff and the devs deserve the support). On the subject of Music and Rhythm x (genre), there's an upcoming title by name of God of Rock that mixes rhythm gameplay with a Fighter. This might be an interesting one to look into as well. (Sidenote: There's this PS2 title by name of Kya: Dark Lineage that's like a 3D Rayman-looking platformer, but the combat system is like tekken-- and quite in-depth, with various kicks, grabs, stun and mobility options for a game of that type. Could be neat to look further into as well) Last few years have been pretty impressive in terms of that Rhythm x (genre) type mixes. First No Straight Roads, then Metal: Hellsinger and Bullets Per Minute, now Hi-Fi Rush and aforementioned upcoming God of Rock. Interesting times. For now, wish you a lot of fun and good luck on this game, and whatever else may cross your path!
This is one of those games that makes me wish record labels would realize that if they license their song to a game it's their fault if somebody play's it on a stream. The stream safe tracks they got to replace the Boss music aren't bad, but we shouldn't have to have those to begin with.
Your perspective assumes that streaming is cleanly legal, which it is not. Right now, the state of game streaming is an equilibrium in which the major entities are all playing by honor rules. In some countries like Japan, their laws are clear enough that publishers will go after bigger entities like Hololive for streaming games without prior consent, they just don't bother going after individual streamers because it's not worth the effort. Because games aren't static, there's an awkward legal area regarding transformative work. However, the music industry does not play ball here. Just because music is licensed for a game does not make it licensed for video content made using that game. How the laws should be defined is a complex argument, but we can all agree that the current laws are a mess and the current systems are an awkward set of unclearly defined and ever changing boundaries.
@@effortlessfury That's exactly why they included similar music tracks performed by The Glass Pyramids. TH-cam is a hot mess and it is really easy to get copyright strikes and copyright claims once someone's else's songs get played on someone's channel. At the very least, it gets around the problems so people can enjoy the game streaming and otherwise.
Tango may have been the true gem of the Zenimax purchase. They can do horror, they can do single player story driven games, they can do rhythm games, action. What can't they do. And trust me Xbox needs studio's that can do single player story narrative games.

Max: Why would I go into the training room when I can just fight enemies?
*This game could easily be turned into a anime or cartoon and be just as good*
I really wish they would've planned a companion anime that releases with or within a few months of the game.
Even if they were small 10-15 minute episodes.
I just want more Hi Fi Rush content
@@AgentAika001 Yea that would be dope for real
Honestly I want some merch that's actually solid physical stuff. Nearly every single thing in this game could be turned into a t-shirt or something, I know I'd definitely buy a copy of Chai's junky guitar
No Straight Roads walked so that Hi-Fi Rush could run.
Rhythm action games are having their moment and I'm here for it.
Here's to hoping that No Straight Roads itself will garner more attention too. That game and the devs deserve support for future endeavors as well.
This is definitely an early contender for GOTY for me. The fact that no one knew it was coming and was released straight after it was announced, was genius.
The animation style hit me immediately with Jet Set Radio vibes and that alone makes me want to try this game
This is the Jet Set of today!
Exactly my thoughts!
Sad I missed the stream. Game reminds me of Jet Grind Radio series. Phil even said the game was partly inspired bc he couldn't get Jet Set Radio. Sega Dreamcast really did put a mark on gaming, sadly it came out way before it's time and I'm really happy I got to own one back in the day. Thanks Max for giving credit when it's due as always✌🏿
Rekka is basically this game's Senator Armstrong in terms of a bossfight and I absolutely love it.
There’s definitely some inspiration from what I can tell. The command grabs and charging attacks are somewhat similar.
I wish DMCA didn't exist dude, fighting QA-1MIL to Nine Inch Nails is the most BADASS thing to experience. The licensed music they use in this game are such superior choices for a game like this.
The Original Music are also pretty great quality soo its more personal preference
@@RenoKyrie I’ve heard some of the Original I like that they alter the licensed music in their own way. But still, to hear the music play, and see the bottom left list that it’s a Nine Inch Nails song is surreal. It’s the fact that I know these bands, and that I’ve heard these songs, and I get to play along with it as a beat’em up game, that’s just a feeling I can’t feel anywhere else.
Immediately after I saw the video about Tango talking about the game and it's reveal, I was like: "Oh, Max will love this!" I haven't played much, but my God, so far it's awesomeeee.
I wasn't sure this was gonna be as good as it was but Rekka sold it for me and things only got better from there. Watched the streams but glad this is up now to throw at my friends!
There's something funny in how the in-game head of Production Management was the one that sold the game for you, and not the head of PR.
Rekka had me down bad
Best shadow drop in gaming history!
That Guilty Gear Strive bit with Rekka's Potemkin move was a fun touch; thanks Jorge!
It makes me happy that in 2023 a banger can still just come out of nowhere and be fantastic.
Was waiting for this video series! I’ll watch after I beat the game, because damn is it too fun.
Im so happy you picked this up!!! i love this game so much
This game deserves way more recognition, my God. It's incredible. Great humor, Spiderverse inspired graphics, Rhythm based DMC combat. HOW DID THIS GO UNDER THE RADAR!?
It was announced then shadowdropped on the Xbox conference earlier. Lol
It’s spreading like wildfire among people and I’m all in for it!
Another game in a similar vein came out a few years ago by name of No Straight Roads. Not as mechanically complex or as long as Hi-Fi Rush though, but for a debut title by its respective dev studio, it was fun and interesting.
@@jurtheorc8117 Yep!
@@Yoshia1103 funny cause Respawn did exactly that with Apex
Hi Fi Rush is definitely one of the best games ever not even gonna lie
@@johntaylor7354 He's right and he should say it

Sony dropping hit after hit, then drops f’n Forsaken…. MEANWHILE, Tango over here cooking up one the sickest games EVER without a single leak, rumor, or marketing attached. Absolute BANGER.
Forspoken looked like every other overhyped open world sony exclusive
I’m glad finally that review companies and the gaming you tubers will actually review something with a Sony logo truthfully but only because it’s undeniably bad. If it was just mid everyone would be sucking it off and giving it a pass.
@@HonkeyKong54 What other open world Sony exclusives were you talking about? I can only think of Ghost of Tsushima and GoW Ragnarök and Ragnarök isn't even a fully open world game.
Saw that you streamed this game, but couldn't catch it. Glad you uploaded it here!
That grab in the intro reminded me of his Boss Rage episode trying to get to Oni and then getting bodied by Hugo at the end.
I was watching the vods for this stream and I can't stop bopping to the beat. This game really has a lot going for it.
Rekka gave you that King from tekken treatment lmao
Second funniest thing: Chai changed out of his hospital robes without noticing the music player 🤣🤣
I feel the need to ask. If all you usually wear are a t-shirt, jacket and pants, how often and for how long would you stare at your own chest? Because anything beyond "once in a while" and "in the blink of an eye" is creepy.
Gosh this game is like a breath of fresh air. It just is dripping with charm that you can't help to luv it. + the music in the game are instant hits for me. def goty for me already.
Ladies and gentlemen, we are so back... TANGO IS BACK FROM THE DEAD BABY!!!!!!
54:00 If you don't play in "Streamer-Mode" Nine Inch Nails plays a song in this bossfight. The streamer-mode takes ALOT away from the musical side. The real soundtrack you hear when you play it normally is insanely cool.
Streamer mode OST is still really good.
Chai is like mix with One Piece's Kid's Devil Fruit powers and along with some Uta's Devil Fruit powers, NewGrounds FNF Boyfriend's personally and Brook Musican attacks and skills. And *Chef's Kiss* Wah-lah! A New Xbox Exclusive character is Born!
The game literally looks like a cartoon that would be given a premium time slot, I’m saying this as a compliment.
Pretty cool how sometimes the donations comes in with the beat as well
This has got to be some of the best animation I've ever seen in a game, period. Really gives me Spiderverse vibes at times. And yeah, those facial animations are just great.
Watched a few minutes of this and decided to buy it myself. What a fun game! Can't wait to finish it and come back and watch the rest of Max's playthrough. Tango Gameworks really tried something new and smashed it out the park on this one.
Kale just reminds me of Handsome Jack
By far the best first new game of the year! Currently working on the after story clean up!
I love how Rekka just Potemkin Busters you. That’s so great.
Watching the pre-intro clip and wondering what this is going to awaken in me.
Glad you are enjoying this! This is the exact kind of game I've been really missing. It is just pure fun with incredible presentation.
HI FI RUSH IS AT A 90 META right now!!!! "A Must Play" Masterpiece! 🔥
And remember it was a shadow drop. 🔥
This is the most fun hack n slash game since DMC5.
Game is amazing im exited for him playing this game
MAX: "THIS GAME FEELS SNAPPY"
HI-FI RUSH: *PROTAGONIST STARTS SNAPPING WITH THE MUSIC AFTER KICKING ASS*
I was eagerly waiting for when you are going to upload HiFi Rush, I love you Max you are my favourite youtuber
10:25 - Chai snapping his fingers while Max talks about how snappy the game feels. That timing is too perfect.
Fun fact: almost every robot has additional dialogue if you hit them
24:24 808 is an homage by Shinji Mikami's Tango Gameworks video game studio in Tokyo - owned by American company ZeniMax Media, which owns Bethesda Softworks - to another Japanese innovator, the late Ikutarō Kakehashi.
3:28:34 gotta love the occasional times where the characters acknowledge the player lol
The Characters are very lovable. ScottFalco did a video about this game, and his description of "feels like a gamecube title, and that's a good thing" hits the vibe on the head.
AWESOME!!! I’ve been hearing so many amazing things from this game! I’m going to enjoy this playthrough!!
The whole game was amazing from start to finish, an rhythm action game! The story was rocking and characters were very interesting especially Chai and his friends! Gameplay was easy to learn, Overall it’s great game I glad I stuck around during these streams I didn’t regret at all!
When this game was announced, I knew this was Max type of game. He liked them fast action get your attention right away game.
that intro is just superb
I knew I've heard his voice before, its Akechi!
This game is so captivating as a spectator! First time I've ever felt the satisfaction of a rhythm game so consistently through the screen.
This is a game like Evil West, a game that belongs when Viewtful Joe and No More Heroes released.
We deserve fun varied games.
Is that a Benny 808 in the thumbnail? That is just gold, and shows how much he enjoyed this game.
10:05: "Everything goes to the music!"
5 seconds later - 😂😂👌👌
Hi-Fi Rush was absolutely a welcome surprise to the gaming market. I'm honestly wishing game companies and developers in the future really consider releasing more games like this, where they don't spend upwards of a year releasing trailers and stuff. Just show me a nice trailer and drop the game ASAP, I think that's one very strong reason this game is succeeding so well right now.
All the band kids rn are keeping beat with their foot unintentionally, we would master this game fr
To think that such a gem would shadow drop out of the Xbox Developer_Direct. It was very unexpected and I'm all for it! 🤘💥
Kudos to Tango Gameworks, Bethesda, and Xbox for this incredible Xbox Series X|S 1st party console exclusive! 🔥
Luv this game it's the kind of game that reminds you as to why you're a gamer in the first place
I need gifs of 808 jammin' out and more during fights asap lol
Watching this live was absolutely hype
If Max enjoyed the way the whole game revolves around music beats, I hope Metal Hellsinger is next on the agenda
Could be neat to look further into as well)
Last few years have been pretty impressive in terms of that Rhythm x (genre) type mixes. First No Straight Roads, then Metal: Hellsinger and Bullets Per Minute, now Hi-Fi Rush and aforementioned upcoming God of Rock. Interesting times.
For now, wish you a lot of fun and good luck on this game, and whatever else may cross your path!
I remember NSR, it was a neat little game.
Its crazy how Hellsinger was my GOTY last year, and HFR is already my GOTY this year lol.
Literal dream-come-true games LMAO
And they shut the studio down.
really?
@@salk-e8346as they were about to pitch the sequel, too.
@@umphreak9999 Maaan that's sad. I genuinely was obsessed with this game when it came out. It was like my "this needs to be goty" frfr
Now it’s back
1:56:42 OMG!! Did Max just quote War Machine's Proton Cannon?!?!
This is one of those games that makes me wish record labels would realize that if they license their song to a game it's their fault if somebody play's it on a stream. The stream safe tracks they got to replace the Boss music aren't bad, but we shouldn't have to have those to begin with.
Honestly the originals slap though. Wish they were on spotify, especially the ones you can buy on the jukebox.
“I don’t wanna buy this one” *buys it anyway*
So glad you mentioned Kingdom Hearts early on in the gameplay because that was exactly the first impression I got. This game looks so fun
There's so many amazing details that I'm speechless
