This game had so much content and is the definition of the 2000's bling era. Despite being a licensing hell because a lot of the playable rappers did not get payed for it. Plus almost all of the roster would nowadays be put behind a paywall which is the sad truth about fighting games. You even could have friends come over and have him use his memory card to have his CaC fight against yours. Sure the story mode could get a bit dragged out at the 2nd half of the story with fighting at the same venues or slightly modified versions of them but it wasn't as noticable when the fighting itself is so satisfying. This game had everything. Supers, stage finishers, a ridiculously large roster where literally everyone who appeared in the game one way or another is playable, a solid 2000's soundtrack list, and a shit ton of costumizable options for your CaC. Man I miss this game. This and Vendetta were fun to play with. Icon ruined and killed the franchise unfortunately. I even still remember the rumors back then of a new FFNY version with extra characters like 50 Cent, Eminem, 2Pac and Biggie.
@@essam007 yeah icon was the nail in the coffin for this franchise. they got rid of the old studio got a new studio and engine and completely butchered the games iconic fighting for a sound shockwave system.
Been playing this game for more than a decade, when it comes to FFNY, my go to style is Submissions (or Wrestling) because using one of these two styles enables you to do a Strong front grapple and switch to a Rear grapple, since the game punishes you if you're using the same moves more than twice in a row, these two styles allows you for an easy access to more variety. The other 3 styles don't let you do that, and if you pick Sub or Wrestling as the 2nd or 3rd style, you cannot do that still, they have to be one of your 1st style. The pros and cons to each style is that : - Martial Arts : You can give faster strikes and it's easier to counter your opponent BUT you're much weaker in terms of damage and sometimes the style disable other styles to have some KO moves. - Street Fighting : Well obviously the power of your punching moves are stronger but you're a little too predictable. - Kickboxing : A great style to combo your opponent BUT the game will often penalize you for using it, meaning less money. It's probably the best fighting style of them all. - Wrestling : Access to easy rear grapples BUT you're a little one sided as your best option is always to grapple. - Submissions : Weakening a limb means less damage from the opponent BUT it's an extremely slow (as in you cannot win fast with it) and boring style to some players. My go to combinations are mostly (IN THE WRITTEN ORDER): - *Submissions* (it's the most basic one but the Sleeper hold is a very broken submission in the early game). - *Kickboxing* (It's the beginning style but it's litterally the ONLY Kickboxing style that lets you use the Kickboxing's punch combo as the strong grapple, as all other additional styles will automatically be assigned to the punch moves). - *Submissions + Kickboxing* (The submissions are quite effective with it and it makes your win condition much faster, there's a very good Submission moves with it). - *Wrestling + Kickboxing* (You can KO someone so fast with it as it combines the most useful combo of the Kickboxing with the heavy moves of Wrestling that can KO opponents). - *Submissions + Wrestling* (If you switch the order of these two styles you have a different set of moves and submissions to use, it's the style that fits a pure wrestling game style as well as a pure Def Jam Vendetta gameplay).
I would recommend starting with either wrestling or streetfighting then after that if you chose wrestling first, then do streetfighting second then vice versa along with kickboxing, martial arts or submissions. But martial arts for me is not a good style for what they give you. If anything you really have to rely on the wall jumps in the blazin move.
Even if they can't make a game exactly like this, due to licensing, I'd love to see a game that has similar mechanics. From the combining of styles to form your own, a well done story, and a large cast, with fun supers and Damn good customization. Loved this game back in that day.
"I need a weapon! I need a weapon!!!" Said Max in a stage with two bottles on the speakers, and three dudes holding pipes... lmao loved every minute of this.
Not even that. Him refusing to special during danger or just throwing them Into fans. The wall jump is hard to do. But koing isn't as hard as he making it look. Congrats on winning a ps5
Man, I’m so happy to be able to re-live this game through Max playing it for the first time and now realizing that Chris Judge went from D-Mob to Kratos
Sean Paul fight was too funny. Chat: "Sean Paul is gonna wreck you! Everyone had problems with this fight" * Sean Paul kicks Max, then taunts like he's hot shit. * * Max proceeds to beat the living crap out of Paul with no additional damage * Max: "Problem fight, huh?"
It's embarrassing how fighting games that used 3D models from the PS2 era still have better facial animation than the overwhelming majority of fighting games today that use 3D models.
1. for anybody who’s never played this game and wants to give it a try, first off emulation is your best bet unless you want to pay 150-200$, or know somebody that has the game already. 2. when you play this game, DO NOT MASH BUTTONS. it’s not a street fighter/mortal Kombat style fighting game. it’s a fighting game with wrestling game controls. (grapple button, one punch button, one kick button, a run button, and L1/L is your modifier.) 3. for your first time, DON’T PLAY ON HARD, and DON’T choose martial arts as your first fighting style or you’ll most likely give up quickly. STREETFIGHTING, is the easiest style to use (it’s also the best speed running style). (Look at number 4 if hard mode doesn’t intimidate you.) 4. if you want to make the best character statistically possible, choose Martial Arts, Streetfighting, & Kickboxing, in that order. 5. YES, JEWELRY makes a difference, the more expensive your jewelry is the faster your “blazin” (finisher) meter fills up. 6. getting “perfect” matches & getting more points by doing more moves, gives you more money to spend, so make the matches LAST, don’t end them quickly. try to use your blazin 4-5 times in EVERY MATCH. 7. USE THE ENVIRONMENT, using the crowd is a good thing but DON’T try to use the crowd as a way to end the match. USE THE WALLS/CAGE. 8. THANK YOU MAX, for showcasing one of the greatest games of all time, (my second favorite).
Please stop overhyping MA + SF + KB (the second and third order of styles do not matter, btw). While this fighting style is considered top tier, there are 10 other style combinations in the S tier category and 7 other styles in the A tier category. Also, jewelry is not THAT important. Your charisma stat is not just affected by your jewelry. You will gain charisma for doing a certain amount of crowd moves, blazin' moves and reaching certain story thresholds and beating the story itself. I have 2 fighters who don't even wear jewelry (for aesthetics reasons) and they do just fine filling up their Blazin' meter as their charisma stat is already at like 85%.
I once made a capoeira/kunf fu style character on the xbox version but forgot the order in the martial arts I selected. Never was able to recreate it again.
How the hell we don't have games like these nowadays? We come so far in the tech side, and still this game is way more fun to play than most of games nowadays!
I don't get it, and it's not isolated to this game. Why, when you have a winning formula in a game, why would you not do that again? Def jam was awesome, but im also looking at you netherrealm Conquest, street fighter world tour, dynasty warriors 5 xl, etc
Well... the reason this game was never created again was because according to the rappers who were in this game. Most of them were not paid. So they probably don't trust the industry to pay them again
The PS2/Gamecube/Xbox era had some of the greatest games of all time that have aged like wine. I've bee playing many PS2 games recently and I'm surprised by how well so many of them hold up to this day. Some were even more fun and had more content than modern games.
This was one of my favorite, underrated gems of that year (2004). Story mode is basically the classic hip hop/turf war tale that features prominent hip hop/rap artists of the day in respective roles and fighting for D-Mob (Actor that is known for Kratos and Lee) and Crow (essentially a ruthless don version of Snopp Dogg) and you fight for D-Mob and Blaze (Method Man). This gets dark and brutal real fast (ranging from Subway Fun, to win you have to stun a person on a track at the right moment to get mutilated by an oncoming train or the climatic penthouse window battle where you have to knock the living shit out of the opponent into a window that breaks and spells their death) and playing it again, I found for newcomers, you have to go hard, fast, utilize the environment effectively, use the modifier to pull off different moves, and use the blaze mode for either a massive damage hit or if done right, KO. Matches can last either 30 seconds or a few minutes depending on how tough the opponent is. Glad people are discovering this one of a kind gem that you couldn't even make nowadays.
This game has the best character customization in the industry. The amount of options of how to customize a particular article of clothing is spectacular. Though the fashion might be dated the mechanics of this system beats it's modem day counter parts.
To break down the hip hop scene of this time, Def Jam was as a record label THE big dog in town. The Wal Mart of the market. Yea there were others (Roc A Fella, Bad Boy, Universal, Cash Money, No Limit, and so many others to name) but Def Jam was the biggest. They also have branches of their label so they have a hand in a lot of artists and labels and such. Russel Simmons was the head of it and Kimora ( who is in this game) is his lady.
this is my Favorite game of all time and i'm just happy you're putting eyes on it for potential new fans to enjoy. i'm in my 30s now not a lot of younger folks know about this game

Max, reversal-ing a throw is just done by doing a strike. And "crowd-interaction kills" are done by hitting an enemy into the crowd where they're slumped over, and then grappling them.

@@MansMan42069 To be fair, I did not show up to start helping until after he had defeated Nyne or OE at the foundation. People told him how to do wall runs, but he had to learn and adjust to the game. So he was taught how to do them early on. And you will see in the later vids when they come that he was really starting to catch on. But he was taught how to do the wall runs, and they really are not that useful for the record
@@MansMan42069 Martial Art wall runs, although can KO, in most cases, get blocked, whiffed punished, or missed. The split kick can at least hit people laying on the ground and still KO them. I did not advise Martial Arts as his first style, I did help Max learn the mechanics and helped him to start building a top tier easy to use build (that requires Martial Arts as the STARTING STYLE because that is the only part of the style ORDER that dictats builds outside of the combination of styles). I also helped prevent him making a build that would have made the playthrough a struggle The advantages of Martial Arts tho are the following: Faster block canceling when Martial Arts is your Primary style (meaning 1st style), he had Parry + (allows for most punishes on parry scenarios and does health and like damage) I helped prevent him turning it into Parry - (also known as the judo throw) Martial Arts also gets most of the games safe moves that are full of I-frames and are even safe to parries Like the scissors kick move he got as a heavy kick when he added Street Fightering. There are actually many great uses to Martial Arts, the wall run is just arguably without a doubt the worst imo, unless you give yourself Parry -, than that is worse than the wall run. That aside, Martial Arts is actually super useful, you just have to understand the game utilize it
God I love this game. I've replayed it over and over and over mixing different fighting styles, and trying to recreate my favorite rappers and rock stars.
aw man just watching this makes me want to play this game again. Was so fun. Best wrestling game to this very day imo. I know copyright issues stop it from coming back (along with Def Jam Icon failing miserably) but it'd be awesome to see some sort of spiritual successor to this.
I wouldn't mind for the Def Jam crew or another crew to just make a game around the combat of Fight for NY. Really what made it more interesting was the iconic Rappers, but the combat was really fleshed out than most of us realised. We could play a game with just characters and still have fun with it without Blaze or Doc.
A thing I do at the Foundation is get my stamina/special meter up with taunts. Once it starts to slow down I grab the weapon on the subwoofer & then taunt a few more times before starting the fight. A faster way to build up the meter would be to grab that weapon 1st then taunt. Your opponent will stand there & watch you, you must move toward them to start the fight. More good advice - In the FFAs of 4 or 3, it's sometimes best to let 2 opponents fight each other. You can recover health & taunt to gain back stamina/special meter. Street Fighters are good for making lots of money, that is once you get good enough to play around with your opponent. Once I learned how to do this, I kept on beating my opponent, adding up the points (even as they kept on being low), & then once I was done I'd have thousands of dollars to my name.
This game was a straight banger back in the day. I borrowed it from one of my friends and played the absolute shit out of it. Spent a lot of late nights with this one. I hope there's a spiritual successor to this someday.
You can get it by starting with wrestling and then adding kickboxing and streetfighting or martial arts and submissions. This is for 3 styles and the latter style is one of the best styles in the game. For 2 styles, you can add any other fighting style to get the stance except martial arts. (Adding only martial arts retains the original wrestling stance).
One of the things I loved in the Tekken entries was Tekken Force/Scenario Campaign mode. With SFVI’s World Tour mode, I hope they incorporate the beat ‘em up / Def Jam style fights in that mode.
Thanks for checking out this classic max, lots of parents probably werent happy about this game lmao but this was a huge part of my childhood and honestly probably one of the first "fighting" games I ever played of my own volition. The single player was revolutionary for the time
When I got it in my youth, I knew almost no onr of those. American rap wasnt that big in my coutry so I vaguely knew maybe Snoop Dog and Ice-T... Ad wasnt a fan of rap music. Game still blew my mind and was my favorite for a loooong time. Amazing arena interactivily, lots of movesets, ability to levelup and customise your character tied into storyline, crazy stulish. I still dream of games like that. But never again I met such a masterpiece.
This game is still alot of fun. I remember it was so much trash talking back and forth with friends playing this. I wished at it's height in popularity. It would have had a small tournament in the old Evo days.
This game was insane and honestly should be appreciated for helping push MMA when it was still “underground” and only barely starting to push towards the mainstream. They never named the moves really but to have armbars, heel hooks, and other submissions in this game is insane to me considering the time.
As much as I love this game, this game did not push MMA. Pride and UFC were doing that on their own. MMA would get the spotlight with or without this game.
@@Unchainedful I’m saying it helped push it in the sense that it put those images in our head, like come on what young kid who played this knew what an Armbar was or submissions in general? I’m saying it probably brought in new fans.
I thought I was just going to play this in the background to give the view, but this game actually looks amazing. Seeing the learning process into eventually taking down the tougher opponents has been a ride.
I watched the stream and seeing this again is just awesome. Max's reaction on everything in the story is hilarious. Back when you had to play the game to gain progress instead of using your credit card like every damn game today.
They need to make a sequel to this. This time with a better character creation mode. One that allows you to do more than pick your fighting style. Where you can customize your character's moveset.
It's funny, I'm just replaying this now and you posted it. Perfect timing lol! This game was such a huge part of my childhood. Glad to see it being rediscovered and given more appreciation. Can't wait to see more!
This video hit me in right in the nostalgia. This game is so well made, it is mechanically sound and really fun. I remember the hours and hours put into brawling with my friends back in the day. Good stuff
Everybody picks the dumb martial arts style and they never learn to knok out using flying or aerial takedowns, this game was a product of it's time and it was so freaking good to take your memory card to a friend's house and do tourneys, great chilhood times, also yeah the jeancos were the thing to wear, everybody was Fred Durst wanna be back in the day.
This is an outright hilarious playthrough. The game is great, the story is funny, and the reaction to everything being so early 2000s is amazing. I cannot wait for part 2. Seriously. This is great stuff, Max.
Holy crap that Art!!! Plus being a huge fan of this game for a long time I'm so happy to see other people try it out and absolutely give it a chance, and pretty much enjoy it as much as I did maybe even more👌🏾
This is what a fighting game should play like. Interactable stages, custom characters that look like they actually fit into the roster, amazing impactful animations, and dynamic combos. The PS2 truly is one of a kind. I wish I still had mine, I used to play the shit out of Armageddon on a fat ass Sanyo CRT TV when I was a kid lol
Come to think of it, I think the other fighting styles had easy access moves that result in a KO once they land in the danger zone. "Martial Arts" is technically starting off with Hard Mode.
@@MansMan42069 and also martial artists can do some nice combos to do an easy KO with the flying kick, like throwing someone in danger into the crowd and then run to a wall and BOOM, or just finish a combo into someone in danger and while they are recovering, you run and do the wall jumpkick and you finish them so fast that way, talking as an experienced player in that game
Having given the game a spin again, the best style to start with is Street Fighting, as the haymaker can not only do massive damage but KO a sucker at the right time. Plus, utilizing the environment effectively and timing the counters for grapples can make the difference between wining or losing big as Max has demonstrated in this snippet.
Nowadays I wouldn't know half of the rooster probably lol. There's also a chance that they would do something like this but with tiktokers or something cringe like that lol

What I loved about this game so much is that every combination of fighting has a different style even if you pick the same styles, if you pick em in a different order you have your own style. me and my friends all had creata characters on the same system back in the day and everyone felt different and some of us had the same style but picked em differently. I made the same white boy with Kung Fu Named "Malibu" cause my fav movie growing up was Malibus Most Wanted!
I always considered this game firstly as a narrative and only secondly as a fighting game. But man, there's so many mechanics and moves. So much polish. So much love and care went into this game. Definitely one of my top favourites.
Oooh Max you're killing me with the JNCO's! Keep it up my brother excellent work! I just subbed 3 weeks ago and your channel is ridiculously fun to watch. Great content and even better commentary!
just to correct the intro, Def Jam didn’t have every big rapper in the early 2000s, they did have huge names though. The reason there’s so many rappers from other labels in this game is cuz the first game was huge so it was seen as exposure for the rapper/label to be in the sequel. Def Jam Vendetta was mostly all Def Jam rappers but FNY expanded out of DJ.
@@MattR8605 Complete rumor. I have never seen any evidence for the claim that 50 Cent was supposed to be in the game. I know Teck looks a lot like 50 Cent but it's much more likely that he is a stand-in for DMX, not 50 Cent. It was confirmed by DMX himself that they wanted him back for FFNY but he declined because he wasn't satisfied with his payment. Another thing to consider is that we fight Teck in the Hunt's Point Scrapyard in the story (the spiritual successor to DMX's venue in Vendetta, the Junkyard.)
@@gzoe247 50 cent was rumoured to be in San Andreas as well. But he had his own game (Bulletproof) coming out so he didnt appear in neither of the game. Eminem was also in Bulletproof so he wasnt in def jam also. Not sure about Dre though.
I ran one of the arcades Max visited many years ago. The mention of Hiachi in the diaper at the end of TEKKEN 4 brought me back with some laughs. Good $#!+ on the laughs of that memory.
Watching Max play a new game always reminds me that he's just a bit of a slow starter. It takes him a little bit of time to figure out how the game works, but he has so much fun figuring things out and once he figures out how a game somewhat works he suddenly is really freaking good at it. That last fight against Sean Paul couldn't have gone any better. I really wish I could get this game again, but it's been lost for a long time now.
Max Love you, your content, and have been a long time fan of what you bring to your channel This is by a great game, happy to see you push through it Obviously I know your not playing this now, but the amount of times I'm screaming " Jus grab him! " Whenever you had the CPU laying up against a wall is insane 😂 If you play this again, grabbing them in those situations seriously become your best friend, it builds bar, it builds score, and it does good damage Also, anytime you want to go for a kill, ( again ), grab the opponents when they are leaning against a wall and there health is flashing danger, guaranteed kill no matter the style You jus need to start the move while danger is still flashing Keep it up man! Exciting to see if you grasp this concept before the end 😂🤘
Every other version aside from the Gamecube version let's you change the voice of your character. Such an amazing classic. Ice-T is an insane difficulty spike for sure.
Just emulating the PS2 version is enough to see how much fidelity and good looking this game is even 18 years later now. Not to mention, I found the best way to deal with that spike is to rely on building stats and getting a handle of when to strike, counter, and utilizing the environment to whittle him down until you literally can KO him at the start. Once you pass him, you can build your points to get new styles and some big finishers. That's nothing compared to the major jump in difficulty, the moment you have to deal with special area conditions tied to the story (first being Danny Trejo assassination attempt and having to defeat him by having him get total by a train).
This game was honestly incredible, and I'm not even a hip hop fan. My favourite style was street fighter, nothing more satisfying than knocking someone out with a massive haymaker.
Thank you for just bringing attention to a game that’ll easily make millions if it’s remastered correctly for current Gen and bring back so much nostalgia

The pros and cons to each style is that :
- Martial Arts : You can give faster strikes and it's easier to counter your opponent BUT you're much weaker in terms of damage and sometimes the style disable other styles to have some KO moves.
My go to combinations are mostly (IN THE WRITTEN ORDER):
- *Submissions* (it's the most basic one but the Sleeper hold is a very broken submission in the early game).
Damn thats crazy bro
Nerrrrd
I would recommend starting with either wrestling or streetfighting then after that if you chose wrestling first, then do streetfighting second then vice versa along with kickboxing, martial arts or submissions. But martial arts for me is not a good style for what they give you. If anything you really have to rely on the wall jumps in the blazin move.
I actually agree with you on what you are saying Mathieu Belda
Thank you.. the nature boy salutes you from his grave

1. for anybody who’s never played this game and wants to give it a try, first off emulation is your best bet unless you want to pay 150-200$, or know somebody that has the game already.
2. when you play this game, DO NOT MASH BUTTONS. it’s not a street fighter/mortal Kombat style fighting game. it’s a fighting game with wrestling game controls. (grapple button, one punch button, one kick button, a run button, and L1/L is your modifier.)
3. for your first time, DON’T PLAY ON HARD, and DON’T choose martial arts as your first fighting style or you’ll most likely give up quickly. STREETFIGHTING, is the easiest style to use (it’s also the best speed running style). (Look at number 4 if hard mode doesn’t intimidate you.)
4. if you want to make the best character statistically possible, choose Martial Arts, Streetfighting, & Kickboxing, in that order.
Number 4...You're talking about Drunken Kung Fu right?
Wait it goes for how much now?!
I'm gonna give my physical copy a hug.

Yep definitely 100% agreed.

"No Foreplay" is Lauren's finishing move. Lauren's the sketch artist at the beginning.
One of the best fighting games ever made. Easily THE best wrestling game ever made. The Anarchy Reigns soundtrack works really well with this too.
This game has the best character customization in the industry. The amount of options of how to customize a particular article of clothing is spectacular. Though the fashion might be dated the mechanics of this system beats it's modem day counter parts.
Not only is this a hood classic, BUT the character creation is mad under rated, the need to give it the REESPEKKT it deserves

People told him how to do wall runs, but he had to learn and adjust to the game. So he was taught how to do them early on. And you will see in the later vids when they come that he was really starting to catch on.
But he was taught how to do the wall runs, and they really are not that useful for the record
@@joeybagodonuts2198 When has Martial Arts ever been useful save for the better parries and counters 🤣
I also helped prevent him making a build that would have made the playthrough a struggle
The advantages of Martial Arts tho are the following:
Faster block canceling when Martial Arts is your Primary style (meaning 1st style), he had Parry + (allows for most punishes on parry scenarios and does health and like damage) I helped prevent him turning it into Parry - (also known as the judo throw)
Martial Arts also gets most of the games safe moves that are full of I-frames and are even safe to parries
Like the scissors kick move he got as a heavy kick when he added Street Fightering.
There are actually many great uses to Martial Arts, the wall run is just arguably without a doubt the worst imo, unless you give yourself Parry -, than that is worse than the wall run.
That aside, Martial Arts is actually super useful, you just have to understand the game utilize it
@@joeybagodonuts2198 A shame that the main KO feature isn't why it's useful. Too many awesome things aren't explained.

aw man just watching this makes me want to play this game again.
We could play a game with just characters and still have fun with it without Blaze or Doc.
if you want you could use pcsx2 or dolphin and get a rom
Hearing Kratos call me a little Bitch and bashing me for playing video games is hysterical
I remember trying to get Dmobs fighting stance. His was so intimidating from the first game
Probably just a bunch of street fighter style fights I imagine
Tekken 4 tekken force!!! The reward you get is the best credits EVER

@@gzoe247 50 cent was rumoured to be in San Andreas as well. But he had his own game (Bulletproof) coming out so he didnt appear in neither of the game. Eminem was also in Bulletproof so he wasnt in def jam also. Not sure about Dre though.
One of the best games of all time! No Cap!
Max: “he’s low as shit dude”
His opponent: “alright, time to be ridiculous”
Max
Love you, your content, and have been a long time fan of what you bring to your channel
This is by a great game, happy to see you push through it
Obviously I know your not playing this now, but the amount of times I'm screaming
" Jus grab him! " Whenever you had the CPU laying up against a wall is insane 😂
If you play this again, grabbing them in those situations seriously become your best friend, it builds bar, it builds score, and it does good damage
Also, anytime you want to go for a kill, ( again ), grab the opponents when they are leaning against a wall and there health is flashing danger, guaranteed kill no matter the style
You jus need to start the move while danger is still flashing
Keep it up man! Exciting to see if you grasp this concept before the end 😂🤘
Every other version aside from the Gamecube version let's you change the voice of your character.
Such an amazing classic.
Ice-T is an insane difficulty spike for sure.
And the graphics look way better on the other versions
Even the PSP version you could do the voice changes. Sure you didn't get the full cutscenes but it was still loads of fun
I am so glad this classic is getting the recognition it deserves
This game was honestly incredible, and I'm not even a hip hop fan. My favourite style was street fighter, nothing more satisfying than knocking someone out with a massive haymaker.
Thank you for just bringing attention to a game that’ll easily make millions if it’s remastered correctly for current Gen and bring back so much nostalgia
