The first time I heard a live performance of the Saint-Saens cello concerto No 1 was way back in February 1966 at New York's Carnegie Hall with the London Symphony conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky with Mstislav Rostropovich as the soloist. After the intermission they played the Dvorak Cello Concerto! Boy was I lucky.
I remember David Dubinsky, the labor leader, was in the audience as were a lot of Russians.

The music is gorgeous as is the tone of Rostropovich and the orchestra. A very special performance.

What a bunch of tastless metronomical comments here - "he was old", "feels rushed", "not his piece" etc. It isn't rushing, it's called vigour, energy, fluent musical thought! Somebody even said even "he's rushing because he was old" - well, I have an old recording from USSR times when he was much younger, with some bad orchestra, where he plays so fast the last mov. that violins can't catch him! And you know what - it is such an exciting one :) Slava the best! Even At 70 years he still played great.

Very well placed. I had the privilege of meeting him in person in many occasions and even playing with him (I was in the orchestra) right by his side, watching him play this concerto, Dvorak, Rococo variations, Shostakovitch etc and talking to him. He is one of the greatest artists I've ever met.

For those who are asking. Rostropovich stopped practising in the latter part of his career and did some very rough performances in his last two decades. He was, with Casals, the greatest cellist of the 20th century, but his very best work was largely 1950s-70s.
Both he and Muti are rushing and it rather spoils this wonderful concerto. Rostropovich is playing so fast that he even fluffs the very first phrase! Earlier in his career he recorded the piece beautifully. DuPre’s recording is also wonderful.

Never too old to express feelings, but perhaps simply not as confident, fearless and nimble as he was as a young man, but outstanding nevertheless and highly spirited. We will all be old one day and our abilities will decline. The spirit is there regardless. I heard him live when he was younger and had a class with him. He was inspirational!
