No, actually. In the main Monster Hunter titles, you hold L, then press X or A (on 3DS or Switch controls) to cycle through items. Pressing R will typically start a sprint if your weapon is sheathed, and depending on the game specifically, will either sheathe your weapon in World onwards, or do its R move (like blocking, triggering a specific attack, or morphing the weapon) in games before World. Stories just has you open a menu and select an item to use.
