I had the honor and pleasure to work as an office temp for Lerner as he prepared his last show, Dance A Little Closer. He was an incredibly genuine human being. May he Rest in Eternal Peace.
Marvelous clip!!! Fortunally we have YOU TUBE pages to show how beautiful genious like Lerner & Loewe gave us so many happiness!!. Rodger & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Berlin, Gershwin, Porter, Kander &Ebb, oh my gosh this is unbelievable....if there were a god he should have split those genious in many countries....USA was blessed with so many talents!! Of course I am talking about the 30s. 40s, 50s.....But now he is punishing the americans with Madonnas, Lady Gaga´s, Justin Bieber, Rihanna's etc. etc. etc.
Sad Julie Andrews couldn’t make it, she’s their biggest STAR! Julie was the one who gave Mr Lerner his Oscar much later after this Kennedy Center honors! He called her “ My Fair Lady”
Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe created some of the greatest scores in musical theater and film history, most significantly My Fair Lady { Rex Harrison was touring with a revival of the show when this segment was filmed }; Gigi, and Camelot. Their reputation was somewhat tarnished by the failure of the film of Paint Your Wagon, and the film of The Little Prince, which was to have starred Frank Sinatra, until he withdrew from the project. Great music; what happened to the new Fair Lady film?
MrImiller07 Critics may have panned the film version of Paint Your Wagon, but the people liked it (average 68% positive). It was even popular overseas: the movie had a 79-week run at London's Astoria Theater.
It was going so well and................... poof. At least we got Rex Harrison's stirring tribute, but it would have been really nice to see the whole segment. It's like someone suddenly pulled the plug and the lights went out.
It is a bit draggy but the songs really help to move it along. Great songs like They call the wind Mariah, Wond'ring star, I talk to the trees, gold fever. And towards the end the pace quickens when the young mormon boy is introduced and then it concludes quite nicely Maybe it's just me but I liked all their voices.
I remember seeing Paint Your Wagon during its theatrical release; it was almost unwatchable. Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood may be dynamic action film stars, but they were not musical talents. Logan's direction was inept. Some of Lerner and Loewe's work translated to the screen better than others.
MrImiller07 Yet, the movie is considered a classic, go figure. Personally, I think the roughness of the singing only enhances the roughness of the times and subject. The two songs by Ben (Marvin) actually work best with his non-singer singing. The bulk of the music is chorus driven, so that all works as well. If you just want quality music, go to a concert. The same criticism could be made for Rex Harrison, Wilfrid Hyde-White and Stanley Holloway in My Fair Lady; Richard Harris in the stage version of Camelot, even Maurice Chevalier in Gigi. Yet they all worked. Musical theater and film is far more than elegant singing.
Who is singing with Goulet? I know Michelle Lee had a Broadway career & "Knots Landing" was popular then as well so that aspect would have made her popular to the TV viewers.
Liz Robertson.....he tried to push her career in anything he was linked to those last 5 years....probably expressly demanded her appearance here...she was and is a good enough singer , saw her several times in various west end shows, but never quite became the star he had hoped...
In 1985, she was likely filming one of two projects that came out in '86: the movie adaptation of "That's Life" with Jack Lemmon or the movie "Duet for One", both of which earned her Golden Globe Best Actress nominations.
good point, but I know Duet for One was filmed in 1986, there is a documentary on it, Thats Life, I am not sure, but most stars always make appearances, its only a few hours of commitment. heh.
I wish we could bring back the incredible talents of all these great. Lerner was truly genius.

THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MUSIC EVER WRITTEN ! GOD BLESS THEM BOTH , FOREVER !
Goulet is in fantastic voice!

So agree!

Wow, Louis Jordan aged REALLY well. Gigi came out in the 1950s, and this was the 1980s. Dang.
This was the last public appearance of Al Lerner and Fritz Lowe..they would pass away..after this tribute by The Kennedy Center.
I think this was Lerner & Loewe's last appearance together -- Lerner died several months later.
Paint your Wagon was a great film just sadly at the end of a brilliant era.

seamus1956 It’s one of my favourite musicals
Das ist die interressante Geschichte ! Brawissimo !

Hardly draggy if you truly adore Lerner. But we’re all entitled to our opinions. There are no musicals and genuine brilliance like this today.
Wrong …math: Alan Jay Lerner born August 31, 2018 - 66 years old Spring of 1985.
right speaker only?
#jeffpiegari I'm enjoying this
Why does this cut off in the middle?

Loewe is 84 in 1985 - Lerner is 61

She was the last wife of Allan Jay Lerner.
Her name escapes me. Thank you for viewing.
Liz Robertson

Oh no you didnt! Stanley Holloway being carried from bar on his wedding day was from the movie version of My Fair Lady. Absolutely positive!

Ironic Kennedy honors in 1985 - both Frtz Loewe (age 86) and Alan Jay Lerner (age 67) died in the year 1986…!
Sadly, this is Al and Fritz' last public appearance..Al Lener died a year later and Fritz left us in 1988.
Weird that their biggest star Julie Andrews was not there! Why not?!
In 1985, she was likely filming one of two projects that came out in '86: the movie adaptation of "That's Life" with Jack Lemmon or the movie "Duet for One", both of which earned her Golden Globe Best Actress nominations.

Maybe she didn't want to be outsung by Michelle Lee.
@@dannybex Julie Andrews couldn't be outsung by anyone, in my opinion. Dream on.
@@dannybex Would never happen. What's wrong w you?
