Here on the farm, there has been a noticeable shift in the weather and the slide into autumn has begun. We are on the home stretch of getting all of our dahlia varieties documented and double-checking their labels. While our first frost is still some weeks away, the flower season will be over before I know it.
One of the biggest and most important fall garden tasks is digging up all of our dahlia tubers and storing them safely away for the winter. I know the process is intimidating for a lot of gardeners, so I’m thrilled to share that our upcoming mini course will do a deep dive into dahlias.
Floret Flowers is a family-run flower farm and seed company located in Washington’s beautiful Skagit Valley (Zone 8b).

I’m doing this this year and I’m so excited!
Yeah!!! I have followed you for a few years and am happy I can watch videos of you now on TH-cam! I live in Bellingham and drive through Mt. Vernon all the time and it makes me happy knowing you are growing these beautiful flowers near me. ❤🧚🏼♀️💐
I’m so happy to see you more here on TH-cam! You deserve a lot of more followers bc of all knowledge you have, and your enthusiasm and love for your plants inspire me to be a better gardener. ❤
Of course I’ll take the mini course to preserve my own special dahlia tubers, all from seed and all varieties I want to preserve named after my pets. 😊
I love growing them from seed & trying to get a new beautiful variety!
Crazy, wild and freaky flowers are awesome and beautiful and different....aka perfection in my eyes🥰
I’m doing this right now. It’s my first try at growing Dahlias ❤🌺🌼💐 they are all blooming right now ……..beautiful Erin ❤
Thank you Erin. The information that you share is just incredible. Also, thanks for the awesome library you have given us on your website. What a resource!!
I must admit that I don't dig em up any more. They are more cold tolerant than we think and as long as they are covered up with say a little hillock of compost or something, they'll make it through. I guess if your ground really truly freezes you'd have to, but if you just get cold (frost, snow, etc), they can sail through with protection in situ. It's just so labour intensive and risky in terms of tuber damage I reckon... I've never had much luck with seed - but those look absolutely GORGEOUS 😊
Oooh stunning!! I can’t wait to see where your breeding program goes. ❤ your eye for detail is 10/10.
I used wood shaving and had a really good success. I did not divide tubers. This June we planted the whole undivided tuber which seemed to work really well this year . Last year we had a lot that did not bloom this year all have bloomed and the blooms are much bigger than last year. So I am a big fan of wood chips.
Beautiful Upload friend. keep it up. Thank you for sharing this to us. Greetings from Korea
I’m so excited for this 🌺💐🌼🌸🍁
Lots of info, thank you, great video. Beautiful fields of flowers
Yes please! signing up thank you, youre awesome
Thank you ❤
Ive been hearing your name everywhere lately
Thank you for all the info! Question if you have a bouquet of Dahlia's can you let those dry and then get the seeds and plant those in Spring?
Hi, @deeileslattimore2624! Unfortunately, no. The seed pod needs to remain on the plant in order for the seeds to ripen and become viable for planting.
How soon do you get a flower from a seed instead of a tuber?
Hi, @heatherjolly8389! How long a dahlia takes to bloom can be impacted by many things (variety, weather, growing conditions, etc.), but dahlias grown from tubers will generally bloom earlier than those grown from seed. The date to maturity of dahlia tubers is between 80-100 days, while the date to maturity of dahlia seeds is between 100-120 days.
Do the dahlias cross pollinate?
Never mind answering. I watched an earlier video and it was clear that they do cross pollinate.
Where was the tour? This is a how to video.
