I am a 62 year young woman who is totally crazy about fishing...any kind. My favorite type of fish however is trout, all varieties. My husband and I just moved to Provo about 4 months ago from Las Vegas, and I discovered Strawberry when I bumped into someone at Cabelas who shared his passion for this body of water. I was 'hooked' after the first day there; the fish were beautiful and they were plenty. My worst day there I caught 9 fish, the best day, 42. (Shore) By myself. My husband is just now learning to appreciate fishing (he's a motorcycle and golfing nut), and has been to Strawberry with me a couple of times and really loved it. I think he will be coming more often with me in the future. I'm writing because I have seen some of your videos, which I find very educational and really fun to watch. Ice fishing....I've never done it. My best friend is from California, and we are often off to different locations in the West (California specificaly) to discover new fishing adventures. I am trying to talk her into coming here to go ice fishing, and as soon as I get some experience in that unchartered territory, I know she will come. Please advise me (a real rookie) where to go, what equipment I need to use, what kind of tackle, etc, etc, etc. I plan to head out there on Monday to see what's happening out there....ice fishing looks like soooo much fun and I cant wait to try it out!!! Thanks in advance for your time and your advice!
Hello Amy, welcome to Utah. Strawberry, as you know, is a wonderful fishery and can be an enjoyable place to fish year round. I've only ice fished near the marina in 10'-15' of water. I havent ventured out to any other places yet because I'm still catching fish there. As for equipment, an auger, tent and heater to stay warm (unless you're tough enough for sub zero temps in the mornings), medium action pole with 6lb test, a variety of jigs, baits and lures. Lately I've been very successful with plastic jigs (Eagle Claw "paddle bug" [white or green], Maniac Lures "gizzila", rat finkee's, ratso's, spoons like a Kastmaster or Slender Spoon also work sometimes. The fish are right on the bottom in the shallows so fish right off the bottom. Dont be afraid to approach others and see how they're doing, i myself have never turned down anyone and am always sharing whats hot because i know id love someone to do the same. Have fun and let me know how you do.
So awesome to see the rojo family out doing what they love! I've been waiting for the ice fishing videos this year. Always good to see you having a little spare time to unwind and catch dinner.
Merry Christmas MrRojoneck & family. My father passed away over 15 years ago and the best memories I have of him are the fishing trips we took when I was growing up. Thanks for sharing this video that brings a smile to my face and brings back so many fun times I shared with my dad. May God bless you and your family.
Rojo the fishing was great today I caught a 23" cutt that was just over 4 lbs. On a Minnow! Thanks to my wife who battled the elements with me today. It was her idea. I had been catching average cutts and she said why don't you use a minnow. So I did and it was about eight feet below the hole when I watched him inhale it and the fight was on. I have never herd my reel sing the way it did on this fish...I wish I would of had it on film Good luck on your next trip. Ice ice baby!
I was up there again today as well. Caught another 30 fish in 3 1/2 hours. Mostly Cutts, only 2 Rainbows. One Cutt snapped my line right as his head was coming up the hole, he looked about 25" and huge. I was pissed. Where were you at? I was by the Marina again, west side. There were a bunch of fellers up there today but with the snow I couldn't recognize anyone. Pops had a good time, he's addicted now.
Great vid as usual! Haven't been to the Berry yet, but I've tried Causey and The Gorge and did well with kokanee and burbot. Going to Pineview tomorrow for perch with the kids. Keep the great videos coming! Tight lines!
jerazima A baker's dozen works for me. Any good recipes worth sharing? The last fish taco's I made weren't very good. I used a dry 'batter' (flour and other seasonings) and I didn't think it was very good. I want to try some beer batter but I've never had alcohol so I'm reaching out to some 'sources' for some help. I've never complained about catch 50-60 fish each. That's what keeps the kiddos entertained.
Beer batter is the way to go for me. If you make your own, use 2 cups flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Dash Old Bay Seasoning 1 bottle brown beer, cold This makes a good batter. Dry your fillets then dredge them in some corn starch first before applying the batter, this makes the batter stick to the fish. Other than that, we just used some shredded cabbage, tartar sauce or sour cream and some sriracha sauce for added kick. Don't worry about the alcohol, it cooks out or just get some NA beer.
You live in fishing heaven capital of the universe....get your butt out there and catch some fish. I'd love to see one of my favorite peeps rip some lips on some big walleyes, perch, crappie and anything else y'all have up there.
Nice video. I didn't think strawberry was even frozen yet! And the fish on 15:38 is totally a cut-bow, which is really cool. We went up to scofield yesterday and caught 17 cutthroat and 3 rainbows. I'm excited to see more ice fishing videos!
The bays are frozen and most of the reservoir is capped. Supposedly there's still some open water somewhere but I don't know where. I fish in the bays anyways. The Cutt-Bow is freaking awesome looking isn't' it?! Glad you slammed them on Scofield...I've never fished there so I wouldn't know where to start. Don't go too far, I'll be adding a lot more ice fishing videos soon.
Ok good to know. The things you use in all your other ice fishing videos would work just fine at Scofield. Also, the best part to fish is the dam arm. Hope to see you out on the ice sometime! I'm going to Electric Lake tomorrow near Huntington and I've only been once or twice quite a few years back... So I'm excited to see how that goes. Thanks man!
Sorry the comment from kate cutchins was me. I went up to scofield again today and we only got seventeen in a longer amount of time, and the fish were smaller too. Electric lake was snowed in so we just went there
CrazyFisher7755 Fishing was slow everywhere yesterday. I went back up to Strawberry with a 6 man group and we only caught 25 fish, maybe. Very slow action for some reason. I need to try Scofield sometime, I've never ice fished there, actually never fished there in my life. I have no idea where to start. That's how it was at Strawberry though, just showed up one day and figured it out. Guess I'll need to do the same for Scofield.
You post some seriously awesome videos. Seems like you've got Strawberry figured. I hit today and two days ago and was skunked both days. Barely saw any fish on the finder even. I'm a member of BFT as well. I would love to hit the ice with you sometime.
Strawberry is weird, one day you slam them, the next you're skunked. All part of fishing I guess. I haven't been up there for a few weeks, I think it's time to head back and see if I can get lucky. Thanks for the comment.
Very nice ! I'm jealous - we don't have ice here in NJ yet and my I've gear is patiently waiting. The only time I got out to strawberry to do some fishing was a few years ago in the summer and a storm blew thru that sent everyone packing - no boat rentals that day..
Awesome video as usual! Looks like you guys had a good day! I think we are going to hit Causey this weekend. I wanted to go to the berry but I don't think we will have enough time to make the trip this weekend. Hopefully I can get some video footage at Causey though!
Non stop ripping lips. Have fun up at Causey...I'm sure you'll pound them like always. Can you keep Kok's? I've never been there so I've never bothered looking at the regs. I'd like to catch them at the Berry through the ice but I've never done anything about it. Maybe that'll be my goal this year???
Yeah you can keep them at Causey. I'm not sure what the regulations are on them though, I usually just catch and release everything anyways. There are some big ones in Strawberry, that would be cool to get into some up there!
What do you know about Kok's? I know NOTHING about them. I'm going to try to figure them out and try my luck on Strawberry sometime. It's got to be possible. You know there's thousands of them in that lake. Do they travel in schools? What depths do they hang around? What the heck do you even use to catch them? Teach me to walk in your light.
I have caught lots of them at Flaming Gorge and Causey but never Strawberry. The concept has to be pretty similar though. They do travel in schools a lot from what I've seen. I've always caught them kind of mid depth in deeper water, like 40-60 feet. But a guy yesterday was catching them in about 8-12 feet in about 25 fow. I always just use ratfinkees and other small ice jigs, pink is usually the hot color for kokanee everywhere I've fished, I always hear everyone say to use pink as well. I've heard they are a little tougher to catch at Strawberry though.
Pink is what I've heard as well. I'll have to look around some maps to see where I can find water in that range. I knew they were around the 50' mark but wanted to make sure. I imagine a flasher spoon with an pink something or other would do the trick. Easier said than done of course.
Kyle Roland Buy some spring bobbers (here's a link to a cabelas page, you can buy them almost anywhere but this link is just so you can see a picture) www.cabelas.com/product/Frabill-Spring-Bobber-with-Threader/1329013.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dspring%2Bbobber%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=spring+bobber&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products I use spring bobbers with 4lb or 6lb line on either a ultra light or light/medium rod. If you have a stiff rod with heavy line you won't see or feel the bite. Light line, sensitive rod with a spring bobber is deadly. You can literally feel the fish swim by the bait. Also, in shallow water (without a flasher) if you are getting bit you can look down the hole and watch the fish grab the jig or lure and set the hook. Awesome footage on your page.
I was out there Monday west of the marina over by the campgrounds in 10' of water and caught a dozen by lunch. White paddle bugs tipped with wax worms was the trick. Keep jigging and pause every few seconds to let the fish bite.

I was fishing in front of the marina in about 12 to 15 feet of water. I was after huge cutts myself sight fishing using a Minnow with a #2 hook, I know it sounds big but they were just inhaling it. I missed one fish that was probably 27" I watched him take it and I got excited and pulled it right out of his mouth. Check out invisibleminnowrig.net I just ordered some of these. I fished Dec 21st and 22nd and going up again the 28th. Looking for that elusive 10 pounder.
Were you using a plastic minnow or dead minnow? If plastic, what brand, size, color, etc? I'm hoping to get back up there this week. I keep telling myself I should try another place and change things up a bit but it's hard to pass up big trout with an average size of 20" long, 2-4lb fish and catch that many of them. So that's why I keep going back. Sure there's places closer to home but the fish are maybe half the size.
Im not a trout man i personally cant stand them and see them as trash fish cause they stock them here in good ponds and lakes and not soon after they stock them the pond goes to hell untill they die off in the apring and summer they make good catfish bait though

Have fun! let me know how y'all do.
It was fun! My 10 year old son caught the first fish -- a 17" rainbow trout. Then my husband caught a 20" cutthroat trout, which we had to throw back.
Great vid as usual! Haven't been to the Berry yet, but I've tried Causey and The Gorge and did well with kokanee and burbot. Going to Pineview tomorrow for perch with the kids. Keep the great videos coming! Tight lines!
How was Pineview yesterday? Did you catch piles of Perch and Crappie?
No Crappie, but between my daughter and I, we caught at least 50-60 each! Kept a baker's dozen of 8-9" perch for fish tacos that night.
jerazima A baker's dozen works for me. Any good recipes worth sharing? The last fish taco's I made weren't very good. the rainbows that are planted in strawberry are sterile so I don't get how there can be a cut-bow in there.

:)
Is this where fish stick come from????
Good old American Family fun!
Fish sticks for everyone! Just so you know amigo...there's always a hole for you to drop a line in right next to Rojo. *salutes*
Good times w/the fam bro.....too cold for my skinny butt..
Come along sometime...we'd love to hear another fishing story from MrD.

Kyle Roland Buy some spring bobbers (here's a link to a cabelas page, you can buy them almost anywhere but this link is just so you can see a picture)

We always go down by the turn off to the damn and do really well there.
Nice vid bro
Gracias!
we went to scofield this morning and did great catching the bows and cuts and got a tiger trout
I'd like to try my luck at Scofield sometime this season. It would be fun to pull some Tigers through the ice.
At 8:50 dad have a waxxie on his hat.
Great video man, just a bit too cold for my blood :D
What's up ROJO! looks like fun with Dad and Hermanito. How's the new Flasher working for you? I'm going up tomorrow with some of the Boyz. I'll be using some of the new plastics from Clam, polli, maki, jaime. I'll let u know how it goes. ICE FISH 4 LIFE... Tony G
Tony! How art thou? The Marcum LX-6 is ridiculously incredible! I'm so happy with it and glad I bought it. Worth all those extra miserable shifts at work. Let me know how it goes mañana, I might be heading up there too or maybe Monday....maybe both (why not?!). See you on the ice.
I was using a frozen minnow bought at Sinclair in Heber. I too have caught lots of good fish on a paddle bug, ratfinki etc. But if you want to Target those Huge Cutts try using a Minnow and a #2 hook. I just ordered the invisible minnow rig@ invisibleminnowrig.net I will keep u posted I'm going up Saturday. Nice talking to another person who loves ice fishing as much as I do! Good luck out there Rojo.
When do you think strawberry will have safe ice this year?
I keep getting conflicting statements about strawberry...the DWR website says it's still not frozen over, people at Cabelas say it is, and people at Sportman's say it isn't. I hate to drive all the way up there from Eagle Mountain to find only two inches of ice, but based on your video it looks like it's a lot more frozen than people are making it sound. About the closest place around that I know is frozen solid is Scofield
How's that LX-6 still running? I'm thinking of ditching my Vexilar and picking up a marcum
What do you think of the Marcum LX6? I've been trying to get a LX7 but no one in Utah has them in stock.
Absolutely LOVE it!!! Worth every freaking penny. I'd buy one instantly again if something ever happened to the one I have. The features are incredible. The ability to customize the settings for your specific wants and needs is what I love best about it. None at Cabelas? I go mine off of Amazon. Amazon had a steal deal a few weeks ago, an LX-6 for $429 plus free shipping.
This winter I'll be working in a video for the LX-6 and LX-7's showing people all the features and how to use them.
***** Awesome I can't wait for that video. I just purchased an LX7 yesterday. I can't seem to find a good review video on TH-cam about its features.
Excellent! The LX-6 and LX-7 should be the same other than the screen size. If you have any question now/later, let me know an I'll be sure to answer it in the video.
What days do you ice fish
where at the lake are you fishing
West of the main Marina in 10'-15' of water
What is the size limits on the two?
This particular reservoir has some interesting regulation changes in the recent years. You can keep 4 trout. Only two Cutthroats may be under 15" and only one Cutthroat over 22" may be kept. Any Cutthroats between 15"-22" must be released immediately. You can keep any size Rainbow. The regs are stiff on the Cutts because they're taking care of the chub problem in the reservoir. ***** Hopefully this summer buddy!!
what state are you guys in?
