I work at O'reilly.. Its a corprate thing... Every auto parts store is the same. They dont pay me enough to know the same as a mechanic. They pay me enough to look up your part...and go get it. If I knew as much as customers needed me to... Id work at a shop.

Well as someone who works at a auto parts store, not O'Reilley's, I can tell you a never ending amount of stories about ignorant customers. Some bitch about how long the line is, how slow the line is going but when they get to the counter they can barely tell me what they drive much less the part they need, and refuse to step out of the way as they call their "mechanic". Or when asked, "Do you have a automatic or a manual?" answer "What's the difference?". I ask about the sub model, "it's the regular one". "It doesn't have leather so it's a EX, right?". "Here's the codes, what parts do I need?". And of course the guy that comes in with expensive clothes on and driving a high end car but when quoted a price for brakes asks, "is that the cheapest you got?". Or my personal favorite, we do the year make model dance plus what ever other questions I need to ask to get him the correct part, I then go get the part. And then get asked, "that fits my chevy, right?". No sir I asked you all those questions just so I could pull a random part off the shelf. Saying "you sold me the wrong part" when they were unable to provide the correct information to get the right part and then buying the cheapest of the two or more options even though one is going to be the wrong part. I see this a lot with regard to optional brakes. Had a guy come in asking for a brake light, so I looked his car up and sold him the brake light. He comes back and says i sold him the wrong bulb. He brought in the bulb from his car and it was different from what I had sold him. I look up the bulb again, this time also looking up the tail light, turn signal and back up light. The bulb he brought in matched what his back up light should be. I tried to confirm that he wanted a brake light and he said, "yes a brake light, the WHITE brake light in the back". Otherwise known to most people as a back up light. Get people coming back in holding a headlight bulb that turns out to be their high beam after I had sold them a low beam, which was the light they had out.
Also, "Synthetic oil, that means its recycled oil, right?"
And that's not even getting into the scams. Buying tools, using them and then bringing them back because they "didn't need them". Buying a part, putting the old part back in the box and trying to return it, hoping the counter person won't open the box to check. Buying a part, finding out that it didn't fix their problem and then wanting to return the now used part. Thinking a warranty means you can bring a part back and get a new one even though there is nothing wrong with the old one. I see this a lot with batteries. They don't understand how the electrical system works and feel that a new battery will fix it even though the old one tests perfectly fine. No having a receipt and not being able to remember which fake phone number or name they gave us when buying the part.
Complaining about prices but seeing nothing wrong with stealing items. I just love it when a customer informs me that someone that just left had stolen something. Why they can't say something as they see it? Guess that falls under not wanting to be a snitch or not wanting to get involved.

    • @LatitudeSky
      @LatitudeSky ปีที่แล้ว +5

Customers usually knew nothing about what they needed. They just knew they wanted it cheap. But even pro mechanics didn't always know what they wanted. Had a shop manager do a phone order for a gallon of oil and a filter. Fine. Pulled the order and the driver took it. Shop guy calls back ripping my manager a new one, which in turn got me called into the office. Why? Because I sent the customer exactly what he asked for. He wanted a gallon of oil. I sent him four quart bottles. That is a legally defined effing gallon. Four quarts is a gallon. But of course what he actually wanted, but did NOT ask for, was the five-quart jug, which is not and never has been a gallon. My manager totally backed up the customer and I got yelled at in front of the whole store, had to apologize to this shop manager and got written up for doing exactly what I was asked to do instead of reading the customer's mind. Weirdest customer was an old lady with a Galant, so already not working with a full deck. Car was absolutely full of garbage and cigarette butter. Her lighter had stopped working so I sold her a new one and my manager forced me to go to this lady's car and install it. It smelled like someone died in there. Maybe they were still there. Anyway I fixed it. This lady was so grateful, she kept coming back to the store every day to talk or ask me to fix something else in her Galant. She found out I had a dog and started bringing treats and food for me to take home. I would rather have had a tip but free dog food, OK. I got the food home and the dog wanted nothing to do with it. Looked at it more carefully and the dog food was full of maggots. Huge maggots. The whole bag was moving slightly. WTF. I was extremely glad to leave that job and also move out of that area so I never had to be stalked again but the Galant lady with maggots.

I was a mechanic for a long time. I thought I would be a great asset to AutoZone. They gave me a .09 cent an hour raise. My store manager apologized to me and said they don't like giving raises. All the employees were constantly asking me to take care of their customers because they had no idea what they were doing. They only care about the stock price of the company and not the employees. Young people making almost twice what I was making and had no idea what car parts the customers needed or what the parts even did. I was told I would be getting a higher up position there but that never happened. I don't work there anymore. 💀

You are absolutely correct I worked at AutoZone for three years and I had before the three years that I worked at AutoZone 34 years experience as a professional automotive mechanic and one of the better diagnosticians in my area they pay chickenshit wages they treat their employees like dog crap and ninety-nine percent of the time they really don't give a damn about the customer what they really care about is selling a part even if the customer does not need that part numerous times I found by the carefully listening to customers that their problem wasn't a bad O2 sensor or a knock sensor it was because of a vacuum leak or some other problem but if I spent any time trying to actually help a customer to make the customers day a lot better by not having buy expensive Parts I got in trouble I got told you can't spend more than five minutes with a customer don't try to diagnose their car and to me that was just absolute crappy coming from the district manager I would rather have somebody really try to help me and tell me that I don't need a part then have somebody just tell me oh yeah that'll fix your problems and then buy a part spend two hundred bucks on an O2 sensor only to have the car doing the same damn thing that you did before and I wasted two hundred bucks also if you buy a battery at AutoZone be forewarned once you install that battery you cannot return the battery for your money back if your vehicle's problem wasn't the battery another words if you have a bad alternator and your battery went dead because the alternator is not working and you buy a new battery and you put it in and then you find out how I needed an alternator and stabs you buy an alternator and then you try to bring the battery back they won't give you your money back you're screwed also they like to push what they call willinger what it takes to do the job right extremely heavy well I'm ninety-nine percent of your brand new cars out there they use Dielectric grease on the terminals because the factory knows their shity and can get corrosion in them cuz they don't seal them very well so they already put Dielectric grease on them but at AutoZone the employees are forced to sell you that extra bulb Grease car battery terminal protectors and if you want to buy a belt and just get a belt or we're supposed to try and talk you into an idler pulley and maybe a tensioner too because they could be bad and I could have caused your belt to go. They fact that your belt has been on the car for 10 years I could go on and on and on about the Insidious things I have witnessed at AutoZone the last three years being employed there you think these people would like to have a professional mechanic who actually has experience on a car but the real truth of the matter is they don't want anybody that has real mechanical knowledge they want people that have no knowledge at all this would be their first job having a job. So they're basically I hate to say this stupid they don't know anyting and AutoZone feels they can train them to do the job and then after they get their little computer training which is as worthless as toilet paper being thrown in a toilet they tell these young kids their parts experts so many times I have caught these young kid telling fibs to customers to try and baffle the customer with bulshit just to sell a part and it just absolutely drove me nuts that is why I will never work for AutoZone nor will I ever recommend them to anyone for parts all the above that I have stated is my opinion and this is my legal disclaimer everybody is entitled to their opinion but my opinion AutoZone is not where to go if you want to get good quality Parts Napa Parts Plus RockAuto that's where to go to find your parts

I’ve worked at O’Reilly for some time. My store 766 Tyler Tx is almost complete opposite of how you are describing yours. Yes we get rude customers but we keep level heads with everything. Fortunately enough all of my co workers and myself have their niche in mechanical background and we all help each other. Never have shame asking for others opinion on resolving someone’s problem. I can safely say and strongly believe I have helped a lot of folks out. Some come in saying my mechanic said this and that. For example lady was doing just a standard tune up. The mechanic told her a tube up was changing oil and replacing all the ignition system. ( Coil on plugs etc…) fortunately she took my advice and later thanked me for being honest and that is fortunately something my store has done very well with. I am adverse with heavy duty diesels while one of my co workers if adverse with off road power sports. It’s all about the people you have surrounding you. Unfortunately not all stores are like mine.

Most were mom and pop stores with people behind the counter that knew about alot of different gas powered machines. Cars, trucks, boats, farm equipment and yard equipment. They knew the names of all the common parts makers. They knew about old stuff and were polite and helpful with answers to your questions. Alot would give you a discount if they saw you were a little short on cash.

The part about, "They don't hire alot of people who do alot of mechanic work", is completely true but is based on select stores and the managers hiring qualifications, coming from a current employee. At my store I'm an RSS and do almost as well (pay wise) as I did working on the cars but you must remember oreillys employees get hourly plus commission pay for parts sold so the more you sell, the more you make. To me and 90% of my stores employee's, it's like a vacation, we enjoy our jobs and have fun but we also know what we're doing. We went from busting knuckles and being covered with oil an grease to going home generally clean and not completely worn out. My store will not let a customer go home to troubleshoot with tons of parts they can't return or to go do a job uninformed about what will be involved just to make sales. Being involved with your customers will develop a customer basis who will have a select few employee's/stores they deal with including you as long as you know what your doing and get them the right parts for the best deal without breaking any rules. I'm in it to help in what ways I'm allowed to but also to keep my family under a roof and food on the table.
So sorry for the story but to sum it up.. Not all O'Reillys Auto Parts stores are the same. There's good ones and bad but don't let the bad ones make you think they all are bad.

In my area O'Reilly's is the only place to go for parts. Other than 2 or 3 youngsters who are being trained by the seasoned employee's they are all knowledgeable enough. Heck they even started pulling out the actual parts books to help me when I was looking for certain parts I needed for a Cummins to Ford conversion I did. Another time my girlfriend's car broke down in Kansas and needed a part that was in her town. I only had cash but went to my local O'Reilly's in Illinois. They electronically transferred the part here, I paid for it and transferred it back to her store. I then called her with a code to pick it up. She walked in got the part and within 1 hour was back on the road. What other store will go to that length of work for you?

Used to work at O’Reilly’s for about a year. I will say, these parts were pretty garbage but we always did are best serving people. No one was really rude to me but did get a lot of complaints about price. We knew the parts were junk so we would warranty parts with 0 thought. People would come in and say “it’s broken” and I would just give them their money back. Some people I worked with were a little more anal about the return process but 2 out of us 10 employees were like that so I like to think it’s the minority. Returns were super easy as long as it was clean, even to this day I buy parts there to plug in and see if it fixes it then I return it to buy a good quality oem one later. Most of the time they are hiring 20 year olds who don’t care so you can get away with a lot ( IM the 20yr old who didn’t care). The ones you got to worry about are the old people behind the counter because they act like they are god almighty for $12 an hour. Moral of the story, only go there if you know people there are good and you want to test parts. If you want to get Chinese crap buy it online because it’s 50% off when compared to auto parts stores. Buy oem instead of auto parts stores if you are going to be spending that money anyways.

I really try to avoid the box auto parts stores. Occasional, I do buy some ATF or an oil filter there if I am in a hurry or if Walmart doesn’t have the fluid I need or Amazon’s prices on it are no better than the local box store. Sometimes I’ll buy a small last minute part in there just to get the job completed and the car back on the road. I never buy any BMW parts there; OEM prices for Chinese eBay reman parts plus I still have to special order and wait! I have learned where to go online to order what I need for whichever car I need it for; its a combination of price, quality, honesty, and speed. I order everything else; the basics stuff (like those clear plastic low pressure fuel filters, low pressure fuel line, and led interior bulbs) in bulk directly from China sellers from eBay. A $6.00 filter from the box store can be as cheap as $0.35 in bulk, direct from China (same “meah” quality part, just no label or packaging). It can take a month to get here, so I order “up” ahead of my needs. Cooling system parts, electronics, alternator, starters from the box chain are a no-go unless I need it now to get me there (which is rare).
Yes, everybody hates their job and employer these days. Sometimes it’s justified, sometimes not. If the company doesn’t care about the customer or the merchandise they sell, the clerk sure won’t either. Dealing with 95% of the general population is enough to make you dread hearing the door open every single time!

the counter. You absolutely will not learn the idiosyncrasies of the parts system or computer in 10 minutes, so you may want to experience that for yourself before throwing out comments like that. The general public needs to be educated on the how, what, why and where they spend their money. Also these places absolutely prey on the uneducated and poor. Today was a stimulus spending spree and it’s absolutely fucking disgusting to watch people throw money away because it’s “ free”from the government. Also we are located next to the dollar tree. If you're any good at the job you must be able to diagnose the problem based solely on the customers description and get it right the first time. Mechanics have the advantage of actually seeing and hearing the car. Whose got the tougher job? Who do you think gets paid better?

I worked at an auto parts store for over 30 years. Twenty years was at Kragen Auto, and then the rest of the time was O'Reilly's-after they bought Kragen Auto's parent company, CSK Automotive. Most of the people I worked with were good people, and none of them in all the time I was there had any interest in scamming anyone. O'Reilly's does have a sort-of-commission sales system, but the payout is so low no one I ever worked with obsessed over it very much. The company doesn't go out of their way to find people that don't know much about cars, but for near minimum wage what do you expect? There's also the tendency for people that are very knowledgeable to not necessarily be very good with customers...I know we used to refer to our customers as 'bird people', 'cause they're always 'cheap-cheap' . The average American consumer expects caviar at tuna fish prices. As far as the corporate office not caring about issues a customer may have, that is definitely not the case. In fact it's a problem for the employees as more than a few times I witnessed an employee being thrown under the bus to placate a customer's moaning and groaning about something that was not our problem. Now, there are plenty of things wrong with O'Reilly's, but poor quality gas caps are not among them (I sold tons of gas caps and never had one come back because they caused EVAP DTCs-including to BMWs, Mercedes, etc). O'Reilly's issues are more to do with store layout, inventory system, and inefficient distribution systems. And oh yeah, the computer system SUCKS!!! When Kragen Auto first got computers back about '90 or '91, it took all of 15 minutes to figure it out. O'Reilly system was a constant battle, with options laid out in a counter intuitive, nonsensical way, too easy to inadvertently enter wrong information, and so on. On top of it all O'Reilly's doesn't use proper cash registers, making check out a slow-as-molasses process. Someone wanting to quickly pick up and pay for a quart of oil or what ever may get stuck waiting WAY TOO LONG behind some guy pushing me to sort through multiple customer histories looking for a transaction for a set of plug wires 'he was sure he bought here' and wants to return. I really wanted to work there until it went bankrupt, as I'm sure it must-their books must be cooked to show profitability. But alas, I had to leave as my full time job somewhere else and other obligations prevented me from working a minimum number of hours.

It all depends on what store you visit. I have an AutoZone nearby where all the guys know their stuff. I was debating on whether to buy a transmission through them or get one rebuilt. The guy at the counter called this other out from the back. Turns out the guy he called out used to work in his dad's transmission shop and was extremely knowledgeable about them. He told me the price difference was only a few hundred bucks cheaper to have one rebuilt but it would only come with a 12 month warranty, but the one through AutoZone had a 3 year warranty. He said that's why his dad closed shop. They couldn't compete with that.

In store, I can’t recall whether plugs were on display or had to ask, but regardless, knew what I needed. At the counter, the guy immediately told me the ones I wanted were wrong part. Taken off guard for a moment, but politely said I think they’re good. But he continued to tell me they wouldn’t work. Showed me what he said were correct, which were of course more expensive. I stood my ground, said no, these are all I need, older car, don’t need more expensive ones. He got angry, aggressive sounding. I told him either sell me what I want or I’m gone. He reluctantly rang up what I wanted, but hounded me to the end. NEVER will go back there again, tell everyone never to go there. Guy just trying to sell me most expensive part, arrogant jerk. Never had that experience at any other store. Have had pretty decent experience with AutoZone over the years. But DO NOT GO TO O’Reilly’s!

I read a comment years ago the said O'Reilly's and AutoZone are the 7-11"s of auto parts stores. Overpriced junk in most cases. I buy everything I can on Rock Auto or the dealer if needed. Last time I went to AutoZone and asked if they had 75w-90 gear oil and the girl behind the counter asked "what is the year and model of your vehicle? I just left and went to the truck supply.

I've had good service at OR's. Lately, I just order everything online and wait for notice it's ready. This is very small town tough and try to only order Motorcraft parts. I've learned how to test my electronic parts to make dang sure they're bad before replacing them.

Fun fact, most the parts that a dealership use. Come from oriellys or autozone. Unless it is a oem part. "Which we also sell some of those as well" its the cheapest brand part we got. Most oil filters are the microguard. Under a dealership account, their like 3$ a piece. 6$ normally walkin

I work at O'Reillys in VA. We are very forgiving! I have been a mechanic (not a tech) for 50 years. Advance ( worked there too) is after your money thats it!!! They hire anyone, 1 boy didn't know who made the Mustang or the corvette. I'd rather work by myself there. O'Reillys pays me well, I provide info no purchase required. But as far as computer speed, it takes 6 screens to go thru just to sell 1 product to a customer. The redundancy there is ridiculous!!!

I always do my research on a part no matter where I buy it from and verify if it says OEM it really is and that it isn’t a fake product. Some parts stores I will not buy anything from but depending what your buying and where, most of brakes and electrical along with older stocked parts I still buy from there and have had no issues. Most Amazon are fake parts from China depending where they bought it from. Any long block parts requiring a rebuild I generally buy through a machine shop that has been around for decades.

The only reason they still exist is for people who need stuff today and don't have time to wait for it from online parts houses. Their parts are crap, the prices are high and I always leave totally frustrated. I do go there once in a while to drop off my used oil.
I miss the CarQuest store where I knew the manager, he never oversold anything. I trusted him to give me the right parts and good advice. That place was awesome!

I work on lawn mowers, and the local shops want at least 3 times what I can buy it for on line, for example, I bought a Briggs and Stratton governor for a V twin 22 horsepower, the local shop wanted $78 on line it was $24 it came in the Briggs and Stratton package. Plus the local shop would have to order it as well. Saving over $50 is worth waiting on.

I just bought their platinum AGM battery ($250+tax). Put it my truck, and the battery was down to 25%. Took it straight back to O Riley's and they would not exchange it. They offered to charge it for me, if I wanted to wait in the store for an hr or more. They even said I could borrow their tools to get it out of my truck and bring it into the store for them. Never again! O'Reilly's will never get another dime from me!

I went in the local O'Reilly's and asked for 6 feet of 3/8 transmission/ oil cooler hose, they wanted a year, make and model, I was like "Its on a roll in the back, its universal." The girl at the counter just smiled and repeated "Year, make and model please" I just said nevermind and left! Went a mile down the road to Napa and didn't have to draw them a friggin diagram for rubber trans cooler hose.

You should see the customer service at the Westland MI store location. They don't take action on rude employees. I go there if I'm in a pinch for rotors or calipers. And they always sell you the items from companies they only do business with. AKA "Breakbest" or some crap. lol Their market share right now is under $2 bucks.

i have a 97 ZR2 Blazer with 360000 miles on it. The vehicle is in great shape, ran great and everything worked on it. I planned on driving it to at least 400000+ miles. I decided to go thru the cooling system a couple years ago. Flushed the RAD, installed new clutch fan, new hoses, fresh coolant and decided to install a new thermostat. I got the thermostat from O'Reillieys...their "premium" version. Put everything back together and drove it for about two to three weeks. One day, after leaving work and driving about 3 miles, I noticed a "check gauges" light on. I looked and the temp gauge was buried.... HOT. I immediately pulled over and started looking things over. Fans working fine, coolant in the overflow tank. Let it set for a bit and started it back up and let it run and I heard like a popping sound and then coolant started flowing. CHEAP-ASS O'REILLEY'S THERMOSTAT STUCK. Well, that overheating caused the head gasket to blow. Vehicle has been sitting in a garage since. I hate O'Reilleys

I picked up an upper radiator hose for my truck and when I went to put it on, it didn't fit right....went back to store to find out ALL of the hoses for that specific truck were MISLABLED...the entire inventory was mislabled.....fast forward...I bought a replacement injector for my TBI.......just spit out fuel, no fan spray....took it back and again, the same problem....even switched injector positions to prove it wasn't a problem with my truck....gave up...got a refund and bought one online from Rock Auto.....worked perfectly...O'Reilly is really selling sub standard parts that are actually JUNK......and we haven't even talked about the insane price increases........

When they go to lookup parts for me, it never narrows it down to one type of part, it continues to show parts for another model which confuses the workers. Ive noticed it takes way longer to get in and out of there than going to Autozone.

I can attest. I worked for O'Reilly's over 4 years and the pay is shit, we over charge for everything and parts aren't the greatest. I actually refer customer's to Walmart for oil. We don't even get oil with our discount for that price and the super tech oil is actually good along with the better filters. I'm not the best with cars. I'm a welder by trade. I feel like if you stand in front of a mirror and fog it up you'll get hired. The computer system is so outdated. We used a system called genesis until last year and it was the old school black screen with green letters and numbers. I always tell guys who apply that they better not expect to make a decent living working there and they better have a passion for working on cars because that's the only reason people stay. A lot of guys I worked with only work 1 or 2 days a week so they have a discount. Discount is actually decent on certain things. I did all ball joints and tie rod ends for my SUV for around 30.00. I definitely don't recommend working there. Better off working at McDonald's or Walmart which I worked in highschool.

As a former Oreillys employee, he is kinda right. They force you to sell things to customers that they don't need. It was called RPM sales or some shit. They track it closely and it will affect your paycheck and when it comes time for a raise.
Example> Customer comes in and purchases new brake pads. You will then advise them that they need brake pad grease or brake fluid, maybe some nitrile gloves to keep their dick beaters clean, then maybe throw in some fuel injector cleaner to promise them better gas mileage.
As far as your wait time in line, pull the tampon out of your ass there pal, and wait your turn like everyone else. Most customers who come in don't even know what kinda car they drive alone and what part they need that shit takes time guy. If you are a car guy you'd understand most electrical parts have some sort of prong, customers will break a prong a 4 prong would become a 3 prong and work then when it fails they attempt to return it.
brake pads, rotors, starters, alternators...all guarantee for life???? Why not Oriellys??

Autozone does that to its called "WITTGTJDR" and I agree most coustmers don't know exactly what they are driving, so every coustmers needs to be helped in different ways. I also want every coustmer to have been helped to the fullest and not shoving them out the door and get on to the next one, so I agree complaining about waiting is not cool

Just did the starter on my sons ‘08 328i.
FCP Euro: $150 for a brand new (not reman) Bosch starter, lifetime warranty and no core charge (since it was new).
Basically the same price as a reman auto parts store brand.
Another $40 for the intake manifold and throttle body gaskets and new starter bolts.
Pretty straightforward job, just have to remove a lot of stuff to get to it.
Took a little under 2 hours to get it off and a little less time putting everything back on, with a good instructional blog.
However I did have to go to Auto Zone to get a shallow E16 E-Torx socket to get the back starter bolt off/on, only had a deep socket and wouldn’t work in the limited space.
And picked up an air filter while we were there since we already had the air box off.
He also has a BMW software specific OBD handheld that has come in handy a few times.
Was able to use it after the starter job to clear all of the electronic related codes the popped up due to the battery being disconnected.
I tried to do a “safe” disconnect with the handheld but must have done something wrong.
But no issues and all codes are still gone after driving it for a week.

So right about the snails pace…. There’s a reason I call it “slowriellys”!!! I tend to go on a case by case basis, like up here in nd/mn there is one lady at the oriellys close to my shop that’s really good. Napa by far has the best customer service (still common up here) but a lot of their electronics are JUNK. Pick your junk…. If my customers can wait I usually go to my connections from my time wrenching at the dealer, and order OEM or o go to rock auto so I can actually pick the brands I know are good. Good video, feel your pain man.

To each his own, we don't have O'Reilly here in NJ, I feel with the zone which is in walking distance or advance, I have done thousands of dollars worth of business between the two and up until recently have been satisfied. I order parts online then go pick them up, I knew the people at advance until one day a couple of months ago I went and everyone was new, the worse part was that the new manager was now an Indian who had no idea what he was doing, he spent almost an hour looking for the part I had ordered and couldn't find it, before the part was ready when I got there, now every time I order something it's never waiting anymore.

Although I’m not a fan of the major auto parts stores I will say that the ones in my area in Florida are fantastic(personnel). Regarding O’REILLY’s , I’ve had two situations where they actually saved my hide specific to my E 38 and E 39 touring. In January 2015 I was on the way to my grandfather’s funeral in East Tennessee and my E 38 broke down. The water pump went out! This was on a Sunday and the first place I went was to O’Reilly’s in Lebanon Tennessee. The manager secured all the parts that I needed and then he contacted a BMW knowledgeable tech who took away time from his family on a Sunday afternoon and evening to fix my E 38 and get me back on the road. BTW, those parts are still running (that said, I always buy from the German manufacturers whenever possible via eBay and Amazon) I can understand your frustration and angst but don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.
    Respectfully yours.
