The 1970 Torino was Motor Trend Magazines car of the year.
Car magazines from the muscle car era put the 1970 SCJ Torino Cobra on the top ten list of fastest cars. It ran the exact same ETs as a 435 HP corvette.

My friend Paul had a '70 Torino GT with the SCJ, headers, 4 speed and 4:57's. His was a 14:0 car. His one upgrade? He installed the dash out of a Mercury Montego.

@@rickuyeda4818 That's interesting, and swapping dashes from another model isn't very common. Was this for esthetic reasons only, the Mercury dash, was it really an improvement, and the fit was good?

When I was 11 (1970), I remember our neighbor had one of these. We lived in a court and I remember him coming in to the court sideways..... Oddly, he was also a county sheriff. We used to ride out motorcycles in the court also. My brother was doing a wheelie and put his bike through our neighbors fence. Expecting to get slammed by the guy, he came out, asked if my brother was ok then told him: OK, now fix my fence. Good times! Good people. Brings back great memories!

When I was a little kid in the early 80s, I saw a lot of them on the road, but couldn't remember seeing any by about 1990, but I sometimes wondered why more people didn't build hot rods out of these. For years they were cheap, easy to get your hands on, and could fit a Ford 351, so seemed like a perfect boy racer.

My friends dad had a triple back 76 with a 351. Great looking car, We took it out one night. We were doing 80 mph when we hit two black cow's in our lane. It didn't total it but it should have. Had to pay for the cow's, there were put down at the scene. It took a long time for the car to get fixed and my buddy and I worked that summer to pay for those cow's. It's a great conversation when you are on the road during your vacation. People really connect to the racing in Indiana. It's been great to talk with someone who really knows his Muscle cars and was there during that time. I will be 58 on Thursday! My wife and are going to the 500 museum and out to dinner in Speedway. Maroon in color, yellow later stripe, C- 6 auto mastic with 3.91 lock rear end. Out of the hole it wasn't much! But after that this car was scary fast! We went looking for runoff against anybody! We found one 396 Chevelle. What a drag race! We had stopped by Sunoco for their High test gasoline, this car just loved octane. Shaker hood scoop in black. If I remember it had black comfort weave bucket seats. 2 days later the owner got drunk again and ran into a garage, with a 66 2+2 mustang in it. He total both cars. So there it goes! Looks are deceiving, Oveida. The Torino fastback cars can be made to go fast. They took on all commers and won at the 1995 Muscle Car Nationals in Bristol Tennessee. One 4-door 429 Torino held the SS record@ 10;40's, 132MPH. Charlie Booze Jr. 2 more Cleveland powered Torinos '70 models with nitros were running 9:90's. These cars only weigh about 3800lbs from the factory but the above mentioned cars are lightened a LOT more.

@@jay5775 Hey. JAY! I just came across a 1971 Boss Mustang, with a four speed and 3.55 gears out back. Do you know anything about the Mach 1. The price was just about right. $15,000. Dark blue, Gray on the hood! Something called comfort weave interior bucket seats. The question I have is. The horse power rating and torque. There's a Dyno shop in speedway. Also it has slats on the back window and a spoiler. Any info. sure could use your imput. 73,000 miles on it! Shawn

      Hey shawn
Well I can tell you this much, if its a boss 351 which I'm guessing it is if its in moderate conditions or better its probably a steal at that price. I think the boss 351 was rated at 330 hp but that was factory BS. Probably 400 plus is more accurate. Solid lifter cam I think and more than 11-1 compression from the factory. If its for real and you have the money that would be a good price. Let me know what happens.

Along with Torino GT was a more obscure 70 1/2 Falcon based on Torino frame. Only available about 6 months in 3 body styles. 2dr sedan had B pillar and door window frame unlike Torino hardtop or sportsroof. Falcon also came in 4dr or s/w.
Dealer in Huntington WV had two 70.5 Falcon with 429 CJ , Hurst 4 spd and several other goodies with Drag Pack Option.
Sticker was $3500 and stated 'no warranty'. Definitely meant for the strip, with no trim, rubber mat instead of carpet, gray
plastic grille, and coupe body. One was grabber orange while other was more a sleeper dressed in baby blue paint.
Being a teen at the time I was uninsurable for such a beast. I tried for a 302 auto coupe but parents vetoed that as well
even though that stickered at about $2200. Drats

Who didn't appreciate the Torino? It was a major player in the day! They used a Torino in Starsky & Hutch and Clint Eastwood made a movie revolving around his Gran Torino!Dusters and Demons were also major players! The Cyclones probably aren't as well known but they were monsters, as were the Rebel's but the Rebel's were very popular. The Buick GSX was well known, so was the Ventura GTO. The Laguna you showed has the 350, but it did have the 454 option, but in '74 the HP was cut and "styling was put in its place. How old are you and what grade level did you finish?Cars that weren't muscle cars but had the ability to become muscle cars were the Maverick, the Buick Apollo, the Mercury Bobcat, the Mercury Cougar, the Chrysler Cordoba, the Buick Riviera and other models that had V-8's.
