    The higher output version of the 4.6L V8 on the Lincoln Mark VIII was what was supposed to justify the significant price hike over the Thunderbird. Speaking of the T-bird, the SuperCoupe with the supercharged V6 and a manual transmission was far quicker than the low output 4.6L V8 and it's mandatory automatic transmission. Your last entry - the Mercury Marauder doesn't even belong in the group of "1990's Muscle Cars" as it wasn't introduced for sale until 2003 - a full 4 years after the end of the 90's.

    • @GreenHawkDrive
      @GreenHawkDrive  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah the only reason I included the V8 and not the far superior engine was to
      fit that muscle car stereotype if that makes sense. And yeah, my mistake on the marauder, I just wanted to talk about it I guess😅

    I might slide the Taurus SHO with a manual into that mix, albeit FWD (and whether it be the V6 or the V8 - the engines were Yamaha (Japanese) based). But otherwise, it was pretty American based and was an upgrade from a base Taurus. Thanks for the video.

    • @carlc5748
      @carlc5748 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally agree with you! I owned a first year 1989 Taurus SHO. It would out handle, and accelerate a BMW 535i, and the gas mileage was the same as the regular 3.0 equipped Taurus, with about 2-3 times the power. I owned both models, so I could extensively compare them. You could not the SHO with an automatic transmission, until the 1992 model year. Ford needed to develop a beefier auto trans that could handle the torque of the Yamaha modified 3.0 engine in the SHO.

    • @MTXSHO9732vV8SHO
      @MTXSHO9732vV8SHO 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ford blew it by not equipping the SHO with LSD. Later for Automatics. Gen1/Gen2 SHOs are pretty reliable. All that said, I regret not getting a Maxima like I have now in my stable. It's easily the most reliable car I've ever owned

    My guy, I really wish you had done a little more research on the Mark VIII. It's an interesting car. For example, the 32 valve engine that is found in the Ford Mustang Cobra of that era is based off the engine from the Mark VIII. The Mark had it first, and at the time, the Mark was producing more horsepower than the 5.0 Mustang, and it handled better. And without that engine, we wouldn't have the engine for the Marauder. Continental hump on the truck lid dates all the way back to the Mark II. It is the signature of the Mark series, not just something they added as an after thought. And, full fill fact, NASCAR tested the Mark VIII as a possible replacement for the Thunderbird. Because of it's design, it posted better lap times than every other car on the track. Unfortunately, Lincoln did not want their associate with NASCAR, so it never happened. That's just a few things I can remember off the top of head.

    If you're being generous enough to include FWD cars, all of the supercharged 3800 cars should count. The Pontiac Grand Prix GTP most of all. The SC 3800 was the performance bargain of the time period and continues to have excellent aftermarket support.
    If you're young, the reason why FWD was common in that time period (80s 90s) is that it performs better in snow and other bad weather conditions. RWD only became viable again when traction and stability control were introduced. In the "muscle car era" you had to put snow chains on the rear tires and keep the speed under 30. Maybe not even that fast. I remember my parents doing it a couple times and it was awful.

    • @GreenHawkDrive
      @GreenHawkDrive  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah man those are definitely great options, but I wanted to stick to the 90s. And if I recall only one car is FWD (the thunderbird) also many cars switched to FWD to be more fuel efficient during the gas crisis and also to follow government regulations

    • @jrcars7017

      @@GreenHawkDrive There were many GM cars with the SC 3800 in the 90's - Pontiac Grand Prix GTP, Pontiac Bonneville SSEI, Oldsmobile LSS, Buick Regal GS, Buick Park Avenue Ultra, Buick Riviera. All are FWD. The Ford Thunderbird was RWD.

    Another thing that boosted the Impala SS's mystique was that one was used in the drive-by murder of The Notorious BIG. The car became infamous after that. It was on a 24hr entertainment news cycle for a while in 1997. I had a Black Cherry '96. I sure do miss it. Look up the one Master P had when time allows.

  • @tirefryr
    @tirefryr 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    The Marauder shouldn't be on here, but it's the best of the bunch, IMO. Not sure where you came up with 5 mpg on them though. The DOHC 4.6 is pretty efficient and they are easily pulling 16-17 mpg city and lower to mid 20s highway. The Mark VIIIs were heavier, had the less efficient B-heads, and got the same of better fuel economy as well.

    That was never considered a muscle car in the 90's lol. It was an old mans car and slow regardless what engine was in it. All you had back then was the 5.0L's from Ford and the GM F bodies that were overlooked unless they had the 5.7L, which was rare and even those weren't very popular. Dodge had nothing until the Dakota R/T came out and it wasn't that good either. The second muscle car coming didn't happen until the retro mustang came back in 05, along with the camaro and challenger afterward and the HP wars that came with all of them.

      The Impala SS was great in its day but the Marauder took everything that was good about that and amplified it in a much tighter (not to mention more attractive!) package. Drove/tested both before buying and it was no contest. And I'm 'traditionally' a GM big car guy.

    Good video, and I just subscribed to your channel 👍 Just a couple quick corrections and random info. The Mark VIII was actually built from the 1993-98 model years (I think you said 94-98), and the Mark VIII wasn't the first car to use the Ford modular engine design. The 4.6 "mod motor" debuted on the 1991 Lincoln Town Car. However, the Town Car used the SOHC/16V version of the 4.6. The Mark VIII WAS the first production car to have the 4.6 in the DOHC/32V form and featured aluminum blocks and heads. This was the engine that the 1996 Mustang Cobra was based on. Ford actually imported all the aluminum blocks used in the Mark VIII's from Italy. These Teksid blocks are known for their strength. The Cobras used the same block until around 1999/2000 or so when Ford started producing their own aluminum block. The Mark VIII came with a computer controlled air ride suspension that would automatically lower the car at highway speeds to improve handling and aerodynamics. Like the Thunderbird you also covered in this video, the Mark VIII had an independent rear suspension, but unlike the Thunderbird, the Mark VIII's differential housing, rear lower control arms, and driveshaft were all made of aluminum

    T-Bird was never a 'muscle car'. Muscle Car is midsize. Pony car is smaller (Mustang, Camaro etc.). It's a 'personal luxury car' like Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Toronado, etc. Most on your list are 'luxo-barges'

      @@GreenHawkDrive No, this one is wrong too. The big cars of the 90's are equivalent to the mid-size cars of the muscle car era. My "midsize" 72 Charger is almost identical in exterior dimensions to my "luxo-barge" 97 Riviera. Which is as fast as the 71 R/T Charger, 0-60. The Riviera would blow it away in any other performance metric, except top end speed.

    The Mark VIII was a bad ass car in the 90's. I've been a GM guy all my life and I lusted for one 30 years ago ever since FoMoCo released the LSC in the mid 80's. After GM killed the G-Body hot rods in favor of the POS W bodies (Thanks Roger Smith) Ford was the last stand for full size body on frame, RWD, V-8 cars.
    Cars like the T-Bird and Mark VIII fall into the catagory of hot rod luxury full size cars that were really hot from the late 50's to mid 80's. Cars like the Impala SS, Pontiac 2+2. Bonneville, Grand Prix, Chevy Montie Carlo, Olds Starfire, 4-4-2, Buick Skylark, Wildcat, Grand Sport, Grand National, Riviara Grand Sport, etc.
    For Gen-X car guys the Mark VIII was a cool car.

    My first "nice" car was an '89 SC (initial year -- it won Motor Trend Car of the Year). I wanted a Mustang, but I'm too tall to fit. I got it in 1995 w/ 46K miles on it. The 5 speed made it an absolute BLAST to drive. The subtle badging also made it a sleeper -- most folks didn't know how fast you were: 0-60 in 6.0 seconds factory was pretty fast for an American "non-sports" car. Until my most recent car (2017 Lincoln MKZ 3.0 AWD), it was by far my favorite & fastest. Luckily only ONE moving violation with the SC, but I easily could have had many more...

    As someone who has owned most of these (not an actual impala but 94-96 wagons with same drivetrain)
    There’s some important bits (to me) that makes a difference on real world drivability and for me changes a lot about this list….
    B-Body chevys are fucking boats…. MN12 thunderbirds and the Mark Viii have IRS….. they don’t have the power but they handle SOOOOOOO MUCH BETTER than the Impala. Not even in the same discussion honestly.
    El dorado shouldn’t even be mentioned not only because it was FWD but also because northstar engines are timebombs and completely unmodifiable…. A better choice would have been the Fleetwood Brougham because it is LITERALLY Cadillacs version of the Impala SS. They have the same drivetrain and are both B-Bodies.
    Never driven a maurader but I have driven crown Vic’s and they are very similar to thunderbirds in driving dynamics so I have to imagine a maurader would be a Great car.
    Another fun tidbit most people don’t know…. The Thunderbird was originally designed to compete against the corvette but it got changed so many times over the years and mustangs became so popular that ford was afraid to offer a car that out powered the mustang and that’s why it ended up being so crappy in the end.
