    what i love about these kinds of videos is that in a way they're like mini documentaries that show really cool aspects of different communities and cultures

    I introduced the 10 step Korean skin routine to my skin care regimen about 6 months ago...and I won't ever look back.. My skin looks so much better and I get compliments all the time!

      EclecticFlavor. I have been wanting to incorporate such a regime in my life but when I mention it to family or friends they think it's crazy.
      I don't think so at all. I think it's awesome to take care of your skin and appearance to make you feel hood and healthy :)

      I too get the comments like "omg thats too much just way too much" or "why" but I realized I had to do what was best for myself...and now people are starting to understand...my skin looks healthier and just better overall. I hope you get a good regimen in! Good luck

      Yeah it's an unpopular opinion but I'm on the fence about the whole positive plastic surgery movement nowadays...like it should be seen as a last resort kind of thing not just a go-to solution to the societal problems it perpetuates. How will someone be able to tell their daughter to love themselves when even their mother has changed her looks so drastically? I guess just pay for her plastic surgery too then...

    As a Korean living in korea, it seems to me that those girls don’t really know real Korean culture. Most young Korean women don’t dress like that; they have a style that is not as overdone as the ones shown in kpop videos. 15 skin care products is waaay to overestimated, most use 3-4, maybe 5 at most. The way this video portrays Korean women is totally exaggerated and distorted.

    • @jungminnam1535
      @jungminnam1535 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      If this was a video on american culture, white people in another country would be dressing like kylie jenner and getting butt and lip implants but that would be an exaggeration

    • @curatedconnection6334
      @curatedconnection6334 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      "3-4, maybe 5"? So what's with the 10-step skincare process that require more than 5 products? Just marketing strategy I suppose?

    • @curatedconnection6334
      @curatedconnection6334 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And I agree. Though I have been to Seoul only once, based on what I saw, young women didn't dress the way the Korean-Americans dressed in this video.
      As for skincare and cosmetics, I think there is some truth in the "obsession". I've watched videos of Korean girls as young as 10 years old having (and bringing to school) their cosmetics bags. I guess it's hugely influenced by the entertainment industry.

    This video’s sunny take on Korean beauty obfuscates the real issue - this ideal they’re trying to achieve is unrealistic for the vast majority, otherwise it would not require so many people to undergo plastic surgery procedures (highest per capita in the world) and whitening treatments (which is an ingredient in many Korean beauty products). There’s less acceptance and tolerance of different forms of beauty when this one type is so intrinsically tied to status and success.
    Also, I love how their look is described as so K-pop when they’re all dressed like extras in a Mary J. Blidge video from the 90s.

    • @waveshit9729
      @waveshit9729 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Korea is extremely hierarchical. Alot of the socio-norms present in Korea are a direct consequence of the rapid economic (unparalleled by any country in modern history). Beauty is often a supplement to career opportunities and is often seen as a necessity. Even then, the West in no different, while most procedures in Korea consist of monolid procedures, botox, and non-evasive laser skin/hair treatments the West (the US only has a capita a little lower than Korea's) much of the procedures are drastic reconstructive surgeries such as implants on ass, breasts, lips, and nose reconstructions.
      Plus whitening treatments are a traditional beauty standard in most Eastern cultures. In Japan, women paste their faces with white powder. In Korea the lighter the skin, the higher your social status as peasants were exposed to the sun and unlike white people, Asians have the ability to produce melanin pretty quickly.
      Despite this, Korea will liberalize eventually. Just 30-40 years ago the military was shooting hundreds of peacefully protesting citizens in the streets. Now Korea has managed to liberalize into a democracy. Still much progress has to be made in terms of social norms but that too is bound to change. Many students in Korea are becoming vocal about how much pressure they face in modern society.
      Btw K-pop is heavily influenced by Hip Hop. The very first K-pop song from Korea was a hip hop song. So not surprising that they are dressed in 90s streetwear.

      Kelly Van
      50s in what sense? The 1950s of the United States? I don't really agree with the "beauty" part but I think South Korean society can be metaphorically compared to the 1950s US. That is, a seemingly prosperous economy and wealthy middle class overlaying the many systemic and suppressed societal issues. A little different however, the west cannot be compared to the east. While the west has had problems regarding hedonism, Koreans struggle with letting themselves live for once. Their entire life has been centered around work and education: as you can imagine this is pretty impactful upon many young Koreans. So much so that the suicide rate is extremely high in Korea.

    I love these videos so much learning all about different cultures it’s really interesting to see how they do things outside of my country I find myself using things from all different cultures in my every day life (but I’m not appropriating someone’s culture ) I just think when you pull things together from other cultures create your own distinct image it’s really cool but something I find really important is that whenever you pull something from a different culture to apply it to your life you always need to know the origins and meaning and what is OK to wear and do and what is not OK to wear and do
