    The popularity of movies like Rosemary's Baby, The Exorcist, and The Omen from the late '60s/70s are what helped usher in the "Satanic Panic" of the '80s.

    I am relistening to all of these.. and I just had the best idea for a game when you guys were talking about the chocolate milk murders.
    the background is lined paper... the game is about the chocolate milk murders... its a grizzled 5 year old investigating the chocolate milk murders... of which they're just kids in pools of chocolate milk with X's for eyes saying they drank too much chocolate milk. the characters are drawn in crayon and the voices are all done by children and women who can do convincing children voices.

    I know this is really old but I'm from Argentina and this guy makes a lot of assumptions about EVERYBODY from Latin America, and I'm pretty sure he just talked to a few people and assumed that everybody is the same way, the most important is that there's a difference between a canonized person, that is adopted by the church as a saint, and a local figure people worship but has nothing to do with the catholic church and is even frowned upon by Christians, San La Muerte being one of those.If somebody worships it, it's seen as someone that turned their back on god.
    Also the way we talk is not because we don't know Spanish, is because that's the way our language has adapted in our region, is like saying people of the USA doesn't know English because they speak different from the English in the UK

    • @marspowr

      Typical missionary who spends a few months in a tiny community out in the boonies and assumes the other 45 million people he didn’t meet behave exactly the same. Yeah, that was a major issue for me this episode as well.

    • @Deolrin
      @Deolrin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      He literally follows it up by saying that they don't speak "proper English" in America. I'm sure he meant no disrespect. Neither does it come off as if "everyone in Latin America" worships the Grim Reaper or practices those voodoo style religions, only that it is something that can be found there and that he lived next to people who practice it.

    • @Deolrin
      @Deolrin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I actually think I remember watching the Mermaid mockumentary, we didn't know it was a mock one until the end when it basically says "all of this isn't true", but it played like any other documentary on conspiracy theories so I could see why people would think it was a real one. I mean not the footage obviously, but a lot of them use fake footage to try and prove their points so that was nothing new.
    Though I do love the aquatic ape thing as it's one that is just completely insane, as if some humans did go back underwater, why would they keep hands... objectively some of the worst things you can have underwater, thus why nothing underwater has hands.

    Argentina is not a tropical country, umbanda is not the same as santeria, umbandismo is from (and most commonly practiced) in Brasil, not Agrentina. San La Muerte is perfect spanish "La Muerte" is "THE grim reaper" so it is san LA muerte, and not Santa Muerte. People from Argentina speak spanish. You got almost everything involved in this wrong, I'm asuming that you've been in the north of Argentina ( maybe Misiones) that is in the border with Brasil and Paraguay, so I'm assuming that most of the umbandas that don't speak spanish that you're talking about, are actually not Argentinos.

    • @Battleschnodder
      @Battleschnodder 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      'Saint the grim reaper' would be a grammatical travesty in English. He also didn't say they don't speak Spanish, he said that like many Americans speak non-perfect English due to the local dialect, many Argentians speak non-perfect Spanish due to the dialect. Which is correct, as for example rioplatanese is mostly an Argentinian dialect.

      @@Battleschnodder Are you argentinian? Because, the first colonist of Argentina, my country, were spanish. We inherited the language but, throug the years it evolved including native dialect, italian, portuguese, etc. It ended diverging from Spain's spanish like us diverged from England's english. We speak perfect spanish because we can comunicate without problem with any spanish speaking person in the world. Modern spanish in spain is very different from the classic/ancient spanish that derived from other languages. You still have euskera and other languages inside the country of Spain.
      People on the us don't know that, for exemple, people in Brasil speak portuguese, and not spanish. Also, i'm 36, i was born in a "rural" area and lived in almost every province here at least a couple of years and the things this dude tells... are not real. Sounds like the story of an ignorant us guy who never came here and asumed that every south american country is a backwards jungle without running water or electricity.

    Hi: Argentinian (Buenos Aires) here. I don't know where your mission was, but nobody believes in duendes here. Maybe in some remote rural areas, but the mainstream doesn't.
    Paranormal Activity was promoted as a real case, but everybody was aware that, that was just marketing; Just like Blair Witch Proyect.
    On the Umbanda shit: We do have some weird stuff like that, but again; It is such a small minority that you are not goin to notice their existence unless you are looking for it, just like any other smal religion.
    Santerias: Are shops that sell candles, dreamcatchers, christian figurines and shit like that.
    San La Muerte it's not very popular here either. There is some adoration to El Gauchito Gil. A real man that was a devout of San La Muerte (depende to who you ask) and some people have been promoting him for canonization.
    You are taking a very small demographic and assuming that all the country is the same.
    Maybe I'm wrong, after all I thought that missions were over, a century ago. But I feel like the Argentina that you describe and the Argentina where I live are from two different universes.

    Ghost Watch was great. My friend (an idiot) was asking me "Are you sure it isn't real?" as the credits were rolling up - Ghost Played By. He became a devout Christian, moved to America and bought loads of guns. I don't think was because of Ghost Watch though, but it wouldn't surprise me.

    I didn't like this episode nearly as much, it felt like most of it was about this guy's game and not much was actually said about the satanic panic.

      Yeah. I agree, hearing about the artistic direction of this guys atari game isn't really what I watch the podcast for

    OOF! Judging by the controversy and apparent offense taken by people in the comments, perhaps bringing this pseudointellectual on the podcast wasn't the best idea. I initially really enjoyed this one, but upon repeat listening the way he talks about religion and culture is annoying. It's as if every word he says is SO profound and contentious that it is almost painful for him to get through it.

      @@coxsquad I was actually really nervous. Jesse, Mathas, and Alex have been some of my biggest supporters and I owe them so much. I used to be the host of a long-running podcast and I guess I reverted to my old "radio persona" for some parts. I was also really nervous about talking about my religious experience (bc obviously) but I'm glad I did.

    Dont discount the work done by all parties involved,, but it needs to be said: its just a shill cast promoting a game. Still enjoyed the cast, but feels kinda......bad man.

      That's not what shill means. Shills are paid. I doubt this was sponsored. Unless you have some evidence that it was?

    Guest episode? Eugh, no thanks, keep these to a minimum, guest episodes on any internet show are worse than episodes with just the hosts, they mess up the balance of the show

      Not true, I think this guest was great. If they're all this quality, I think they could work. :)

      @@FatedMusic the first 30 minutes were literally just an ad for his game

    • @FatedMusic
      @FatedMusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's some gross hyperbole there... They were literally talking about the elements he added into his game (his time in South America, research, etc.), what makes for good horror, and very little of it was actually "Go play my game." If anything, Jesse and Mathas were 'shilling' for people to play it harder than he was.

    • @Crazo9000

      @@tomaszskowronski1406 yes, exactly. Sometimes the guests were ok, but the best episodes were just the hosts plus crendor. Honestly, they should just make Crendor the 4th host and not have guests
