Thank you! Not really - hemostats give the mandala a totally unique look. You can tie a beautiful mandala using only sinew, but it doesn't quite have the same look that hemostats give.
What if you took pairs of wood skewers or chopsticks, and laid them across over and under following the hemostat pattern? Secure at each end with rubber bands as tightly as you can.
I add the rubber tips myself. I buy my hemostats plain and slide a piece of heat shrink tubing (that I purchase in the electrical area from Lowe's or Home Depot) over the teeth area and then use a heat gun to shrink it to fit. If there is any excess, I trim it with a pair of scissors.

I've purchased hemostats several places. Ebay, Amazon, and I even bought some from a knife place that I found online. I have a link below this video in the description for hemostats on Amazon. My suggestion when buying hemostats is to buy at least 10-12 inch ones (either curved or straight), and ones that are sturdy with a longer teeth area. Some hemostats are 12 inch, but they have a small teeth area and they don't work as well for tie dye. I have some 8 inch ones that I use on smaller projects, but I normally use my 10 and 12 inch ones the most.

I was also wondering what is the reason for adding more soda ash after you put the dye on since the shirt was previously soaked in soda ash? Just curious :)
Thank you! I haven't really worked with tapestries. I have a couple that I've been meaning to dye, but I haven't gotten to them yet. I add the extra soda ash just to make sure that as the ice melts and runs through the shirt, that it doesn't wash out all the soda ash that was in the shirt from the soak.

how do you get the dye to absorb into the shirt? like power with ice or a liquid dye just leaks off the shirt unless i squeeze it in? like idk how yall get the due to absorb into the fabric instantly it just sits on the surface of the tee-shirt then leaks off the side, you used so little dye compared to me and mine barley held any color and what it did was on the surface of what i applied the dyes to, like i went trough 130$ worth of dye on 4 tee-shirts just for all the color to barley stick? this is like the 3rd time ive tried but idk im just tired of the dye legit going down the drain and not in the teeshirt. ive even just poured the dye in the shirt and it took almost a min for any of the dye to absorb and still took 2 mins to absorb about a table spoon of dye idk what im doing to make a cotton tee not absorb any water the shirt just wont absorb any of the dye and im getting a little peeved that i can for the shirt the absorb the dye like idk why it just won absorb it
I totally get your frustration. The first thing that I do is prewash my shirts in a little Dharma's Textile Detergent and hot water to get out any chemical products that may be on the shirt. If you don't have textile detergent then just use some laundry detergent, but don't add any fabric softener. Some of the chemicals that may be added during the manufacturing process, can cause a shirt to repel dye. Next, if you are having that issue after you have prewashed your shirts - I would check how your soda ash solution has been mixed. If my shirts have been prewashed and the dye beads on top without soaking in, it normally is due to my soda ash solution. Unfortunately, that means that most if not all of my shirts soaked in that soda ash solution will probably do the same thing. Therefore, I usually dump that batch of soda ash and mix a new one. I add 1 cup of dry soda ash to 1 gallon of warm water. I stir the soda ash into the water until it is fully dissolved and then I allow the soda ash solution to cool before I begin soaking shirts. If you have tied shirts that were soaked in a soda ash solution and they won't accept the liquid dye, place a little soda ash solution inside of a spray bottle and lightly spray both sides of the shirt. This will break the surface tension of the shirt and the dye will usually soak in. Usually there isn't as many problems with the dye not soaking into a shirt with ice dyeing. If you are ice dyeing and there is powdered dye left on top of the shirt that hasn't dissolved, I usually add a little more ice to force more of the dye down through the shirt. The dye shouldn't have an issue not absorbing into the fabric. If the dye isn't absorbing into the fabric at all with ice dyeing, you might need to check the fabric content of the shirt. Procion MX Fiber Reactive dye will only work with natural fibers like cotton. Hopefully some of these tips will help.

Unfortunately, for this particular mandala I don't know of a substitute. The hemostats are what give this design a unique look all its' own. You can tie a regular mandala though using artificial sinew and I think they look fantastic too. 😀
For ice dye I use the powdered dye either over the top of the ice or under the ice. For liquid dyeing, I mix the powdered dye with water and use the liquid to dye the shirt. Ice dyeing gives a more watercolor type effect. The dye colors will split into the colors that were mixed to make the powdered dye giving a unique effect to the shirt. For example a purple dye will split and the shirt will have various of blue and pink as well as purple from the purple dye. Liquid dye will give more crisp edges to the design and more solid color. That same purple dye mixed as a liquid will for the most part just yield purple.
@@assadnujjoo they are both great methods. It just depends on the look that you are going for on the shirt. I liquid and ice dye about the same amount and I have videos for both techniques.
I don't think that it would be very easy to do both the front and back of the hoodie like I did on this shirt. However, if you have sturdy enough hemostats, you could probably do 1 side.

I usually try to have it sit in quite a bit of muck. It doesn't necessarily need to be covered, but it won't hurt it if it is.
Why do you use straight hemostats at the tip?
No particular reason. You could definitely use a curved pair.
