I’ve come back to this first video to see all your adventures. I can’t believe you’re at your parents house! When you started this day we were camping at Assateague south of this point and the weather was pretty chilly. I don’t think you imagined all the weather you and Jen would face on this first day. Amazing journey and thanks for always sharing videos along the way. So interesting to see the US this way.
I will be watching your videos for sure. Envious of your hikes all over the US. I’m almost 67 and will start my first thru hike on Vermont’s Long Trail. I’m in great shape but my body parts are starting to wear a little. Time will tell. Enjoy and forever onward!⛰️🥾👍

@rebeccataylor1478 even I’ll say the red line is a bit less of a thing on a trail like this. Presumably it goes down xyz block to try and stick to quieter roads but I don’t have the same purist drive I had on say the CDT. At least for now
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes yes it is Travis and one of the first short cuts he did was near Dolly Sods. He was able to do some slack packing in the DC area. One of the trail people live in that area. He has spent most nights so far camping or in a shelter or 2. Like he said his goal is the west coast not necessarily being a purist the whole way.

I do have a small dog spray with me though in my experience the problematic ones have been on me so fast I don’t have time to get it out. Here’s hoping this one has less of that than Alabama…
1. I hope you are able to camp at Greenbelt campground just outside of the District of Columbia. 2. If you see any U-Boats from the observation tower, make sure to report them.
Springer is…fine :) it really needs a sign or a monument that isn’t just a plaque on a rock. There’s a reason why the arch is the start photo for most folks despite not being the trail proper
@@FirstChurchofTheMasochistHikes I say this because Campo is a giant ugly wall, a parking area, and a former prison camp, and Crazy Cook is flat scrub desert with a parking area. If you do the approach, at least you get some actual hiking into the terminus.

If you pull this off and successfully complete this trail and document it all on TH-cam, I think you will be the first. I can't find any other videos from anyone who has completed the ADT. Yeah, lots of people have filmed sections. I've even watched a couple of TH-camrs start the ADT. But they quickly got off trail in the first couple of weeks when they realized that their planned 6 month hike was actually going to take them 3 or 4 years.

The only one I can see that journaled what you are doing is Ken and Marcia Powers February 27 to October 15, 2005. They are recognized as the first thru hikers of the ADT. Maybe the only calendar year thru hikers. Most everyone else seems to take two years to hike the ADT.
Nice start! So I'm already predicting an upcoming section you're gonna hate, the C&O leaving DC. So crowded even on weekdays, but only for about 25 miles, after that it thins out.
I really don’t mind crowds during the day. Makes for more people to talk to. It’s just nighttime when I become extremely antisocial and have to have space to myself
Mountains to Sea Trail you Hike from Clingmans Dome to Jockeys Ridge OBX almost a thousand miles 500 of those road walk lots of Dogs empty beer cans whizzing by your head ect all in all the most memorable hike ever I got to a store ol man sitting in front of store says What ya doin Walking ? I said yeah ,He says for What I said this is the MST you see that dot painted on that telephone pole and he says yeah and I said this is the MST I'm on Trail I had the cops called on me 3 times for taking a break on the side of the Road most Cops did not know of the MST all said they wondered what those dots were I was the 11th person to hike it ,I will follow your Journey Happy Trails this walk your on will be so much different than any nature walk Lion King RIP was my friend He did ADTyears ago I've done from DC to Cincinnati on ADT Dolly Sods the Towpath Buckeye Trail and Road walk alot of Vitamin I ease into it please I wanna see you finish I have a few friends who have completed ADT , I'm getting ready to head west on a Bike not sure of my route but hwy 50 would work might see you out there Dolly Sods is awesome again Happy Trails

New Balance Heiros are what I’m using. Seem to be ok so far. If I have the wired earphones I unplug them to record because it tends to sound a bit funky and the microphone is the first part of them to go out. It’s a bit better with the AirPods
First I have watched you. 1 I thought you started at the Atlantic but it looks like you had an approach trail. 2 you mentioned the keys to Canada. Did you do that on rd and trail? Or did you combine Appalachian trail with that journey.
I started from the state park which is right on the ocean. In 2021 I walked from Key West to Nova Scotia on the ECT. That one had a good amount of trail though since it includes the Florida Trail, Pinhoti, AT, and sections of the IAT
No idea honestly. I’m not the best at following other folks hikes. And there are always the non social media folks who do it and don’t make a big deal about it. But it’s not many
Nobody knows for sure and it depends on what you consider the entire ADT to be. The best estimate is about 30 people, but many of them took diversions or skipped short parts of it, only a few have rigorously followed every mile, and that's fine with the ADTS, it's supposed to be a Discovery Trail. (I'm the Utah coordinator)
You make sure the time window is viable, you get gear that is reasonably light, then you plan a few of the initial 3 ish day food carry’s. Then you adjust as you go :)
