I've been mtn biking for over 20 years, and have seen bears several times. Once I came MUCH CLOSER than this to a VERY LARGE black bear. Thankfully the cub was not nearby, but was uphill, in the bushes. She, the mom, stopped right in front of me, 15 ft away (I slowed to a track-stand) and she growled out a warning to the cub to stay away, and the cub responded, then she ran away, and I pedaled off sprinting as FUKING fast as I could. I didnt even think about stopping for a 1/2 mile, just replaying the event in my mind over and over again while it was brand-new fresh. It was AMAZING!!! It was almost as good as the time I chased a mtn lion on my mtn bike. TRUTH!
