While I agree that Fluttershy didn't get enough lines or screentime, she delivered the two jokes that made me laugh the hardest. "You'll be scarred.." *Rarity gasps* "...emotionally" *Futtershy gasps* , and the scene where she has a therapy session with one of the henchmen. I don't expect a lot of humor to come out of Fluttershy, so I thought those two bits were pretty well-done.
I actually want this movie to do really well...but for the opposite reason. I believe that if the movie is a success, it might influence larger animation companies to do 2D animated films again. I would like to see them return to theaters. Of course it is a huge "what if" scenario, so I won't be too optimistic. But I think that it can show that 2D animated movies can still be successful. As far as I know, the closest thing we're getting to a 2D animated movie is the second Enchanted film. So that could also have an influence on the traditional department.
There are several 2D animated wide-releases planned actually, the Teen Titans Go movie next year, the third SpongeBob movie, the Loud House movie and the recently announced Bob's Burgers movie
i think they mean more of "hey i want Disney, DreamWorks, Pixar, and Laika to make big budget threatrical animated films again" and not just these films based on TV shows
I personally really enjoyed the movie in spite of its flaw. It had problems, but it was a fun adventure through and through. _Most_ of the cast were relevant enough, Dash, Spike, Rarity and Pinkie all got their fun in the sun, but AJ and Fluttershy didn't really do much.
Was the most schizophrenic character Discord in it? Like season 1:he’s a statue. Season 2:main villain. Season 3:with one of the garbage pun 6, like really? Mane Six? W o w. Season 4:villains sidekick for a millisecond, then good guy. I don’t know what happens after? Maybe he dies? Maybe he just goes bye bye? Maybe he just stays as a sorta hero?
How far have twilight teleported in the past? Or how when she accidentally teleported her self and spike when over ran with ponies who wanted her extra ticket to the Grand Galloping Gala? Ya, it has it limits but it they would not be a problem. Even a teleport a few feet away would have helped a ton at points.
They had to keep the extent of her powers limited for The Movie to make sense in certain scenes (also, this story was made on Season 4, when she was still "learning how to control her alicorn magic"). -> They show the "top normal" level of telekinesis of Rarity in the decoration scene; then Twilight´s quick craftmanship and multitasking on the baloon assembly scene. Also, it is not the same teleporting under stress (or while doing something else), than standing still and with no impending danger around. -> The maximum distance Twilight teleported herself and a few others (while running away from dragons), was in Season 2 (as a unicorn) and it took her two attempts and about 10 seconds [the distance is unclear, but likely on the sub-mile range and without any accuraccy on destination].
Could we not get Discord showing up with a throw away line like : "Alright, now I'm off on my vacation my little ponies! Don't get invaded while I'm away!" before proofing outta existence? Then have him show up at the end with a tan everywhere but where his sunglasses are like: "Oh! Almost forgot to pack the sun scree- Heeeyy! Whose the girl with the broken horn?"
Noah Maldonado I think it’s because in the show capper, novo and sky star, and tempest (also I wouldn’t say tempest is in the show they just mention her not show her)
A Goofy Movie, Tom And Jerry: The Movie, The Rugrats Movie (and the sequels), The Wild Thornberrys Movie, Beavis And Butthead Do America, Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, and My Little Pony: The Movie, they are all good movies. (Any I left out I either never seen or I don't like it)(And I will say, Beavis and Butthead movie isn't perfect.)
"What is it with little girl's media and friendship anyway?" Answer: Statistically, women tend to have stronger social interaction and cooperation skills than men. Toy companies like statistics and studies that they can gear toward a large demographic to sell stuff. This is why we have "boy's toys" and "girls toys."
While I agree with a lot of your points, I do hope there's at least one sequel. Considering how much better Rainbow Rocks is compared to the original Equestria Girls, I like to imagine if the MLP movie had a sequel it would also improve on a lot of things compared to the first movie.
Honestly I'm surprised Rarity was a presence in this; I work at a Y, and see MLP merch regularly as a result. As far as that's concerned, Pinkie, RD, and Twilight are the only characters.
The roundish, cute designs are my guilty pleasure. Even though I never played with dolls or anything really like that when I was a kid, just looking at the bouncy friendliness that makes up the characters designs really gives me that sort of feeling, yknow? ......The animation is slow, but I still like it; it has a nice aesthetic and quality. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I sorta want to.
Daaang. Never got into MLP, but those are some really fantastic visuals. o__o And a lot of those character designs are really cool. I really dig the bad guy(gal) and the freaking kitty pirate(?) and those underwater ponies! My inner-10-year-old-self is gasping and wanting to draw comics of them so badly.
@WithOpinions I thought so, too, but I still would've preferred the pony form for everything MLP-related, series or otherwise. Not least because her pony form is prettier, because it IS an actual form. ;-)
I didn't like that the Storm King was barely in the movie. He was talked about a lot, but he didn't appear until the finale. Even worse, the voice actor described him in a way that we didn't see in the movie. I think most of his scenes were cut out for time constraints.
Have you already been to www.equestriadaily.com? Or maybe you can take a gander at this playlist... th-cam.com/play/PL-nHkO0lLyUWxxe-y1SJX7tEIlAaOjJyN.html ... that I created of what I believe to be stand-out fandom artwork. Just providing venues for your investigation.
I definitely support doing independent investigation. Probably start with any of the episodes mentioned in the first minute of this review, or the very first episode of the show. Decide for yourself if the show is for you, and if it's not, that's OK, too.
It's just a genuinely good show with cute and funny ponies doing slice of life things and learning lessons about friendship. And sometimes it goes all action/adventure or introduces some really cool story elements and fantasy lore to keep you interested.
I agree. Also, up until that point it was merely implied that AJ's parents were dead or "not around anymore". Well they still didn't explain what happened to them, but that's understandable considering the show's main target audience and the show's nature. The show gave hints here and there and kept fans guessing where the parents really are. And then they dedicated a whole episode for them out of nowhere.
Fun Fact: Although the Sea Ponies are literally Sea Horses, they're actually supposed to be referred to as Hippocampus, one of the creatures Poseidon created for himself, and also playing off the name Hippogryph.
Btw apparently this movie is indeed canon as it supposedly takes place between Season 7 & 8, also some of the orchestra music is gonna be carried over to season 8 and we getting a new sea pony character for Season 8 (plus who knows what else)
I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like this is pretty much what I was expecting. Good enough to be entertaining, but not even close to re-igniting the spark of the earlier seasons.
I dunno. I think the 7th finale could have been way better if it was set up properly like season 4. I know they did set it up with the campfire stories and whatnot, but I think the quests to acquire the mcguffins should have been longer than one episode.
If MLP was an anime, the S7 finale would have be extended to a movie for japanese theaters release. It's great, but too short to demonstrate Pony of Shadows malevolence as a Super-Sombra.
Really? You liked the Taye Diggs and Sia song the best? Weird, I thought those were the weakest as far as composition goes. The other songs just felt bigger and more alive. Also, you can't confidently put it above Despicable Me 3? Mmmm... watch DM3 again and then tell me. That movie is just... ugggggggggh. Maybe it's because I'm not quite as analytical as others when it comes to reviewing movies, but I really enjoyed the songs, the animation (especially some of the faces Pinkie and Twilight had throughout), and the arc, though I do agree the execution could be better. I read the prequel comics and they're okay, but I think with a bit more fine tuning the movie could have been something really great.
I'm sorry I don't have a paragraph... But I didn't see the movie, but I think it looks good. Btw I like the animated series of frames that you post on this site. :) Also, wait I got nothing to say...
PaleoSteno tell me about it, Despicable Me 3 is one of the worst movies I've seen so far this year (that's including films like The Emoji Movie, The Boss Baby, Transformers 5, The Bye Bye Man, Wish Upon, Baywatch, The Mummy and Death Note)
I'm not a follower of the show, never was interested in it especially after being surrounded by so many rabid bronies over the years, but I did check the film out since I know a few people who worked on it and I thought the animation looked alright. As a person who doesn't care for the ponies franchises at all....I didn't think it was that bad funny enough. So I can say with confidence that parents who have to go with their kids to it won't be driven to insanity like they might be with other kids movies out there (ahem emoji movie) the songs may have been a bit generic but they weren't annoying, Sia's song was nice, pinkie pie didn't want to make me impale her on a flagpole for once (I may not be a fan but I have had plenty of exposure to pinkie pie...not just G4 pinkie pie...) And despite it's slowness, the animation was still really impressive
Actually I noticed in the last episode of season 7 spike tries to give Twilight a book on etiquette and history of seaponies before the movie came out they even tied in the sirens from rainbow rocks into a visual flashback reading star swirls journal and how he and the other heroes of his time defeated them
Seriously? The first few episodes you recommend rely on build up from the past seasons, and even the fandom in one instance? Lesson zero is a good starting point because it's early in the series, but anyone who watches those episodes you recommended first are going to wonder Why the purple one has wings now, but not earlier Why said purple one is only one of five with wings and a horn What a cutie mark is What the cutie mark crusaders are what a cutecinera is Actually, just everything from that episode What Daring do is, Why the Rainbow one likes it so much Why her, and the book character know eachother Why the book character is real Why we should care about these characters learning about their parents, If we don't have the build up of at least a few episodes to know them, it doesn't work. For a first episode, I'd recommend: Dragonshy Swarm of the century Winter Wrap up All of these are a great starting point for the series, because they establish Twilight as the main character, all include her friends, and some great showcases of those characters, and they're all great episodes.
@@lilelectricbunnyuwu6418 in the 1986 Transformers, released by Hasbro, movie? Megatron, Starscream, Optimus Prime, Prowl, Ironhide, and a dozen or so more.
@@lilelectricbunnyuwu6418 Well, Frank Welker (Megatron), Peter Cullen (Optimus) and Susan Blu (Arcee) all do have roles in the 86 MLP movie too. Also, the Smooze could have killed but never shown on screen.
Your actually very tame in this review. The two things that really ruined it for me was 1 why couldn't they get help from established allies or at least TRIED to go to other allies first before going to the Hippogriffs such as The Changelings, The Dragons, The Yak's, I understand why discord, Hell they could have even had Starlight deal with them but they didn't. They didn't use any ally at their disposal first. The second Being her whole motivation for Tempest being the Villain is "I don't wan't to be an Earth Pony" She wanted her horn back despite still being able to use magic, sure it was unstable but she seemed to own it and used it well. She could have trained more on using what she has instead of chasing down what she had.
Considering how many times we were all wrong when we declared that a character will never be mentioned again, I'd say this is highly possible. Just don't expect them to have many talking appearances, celebrity guests can be pretty expensive.
Eh they might but they said they will not forget the lore and material for the movie as they will use them for season 8. The character at best will get new VA and hopefully they match the character very well.
I could see a lot of silent appearances of these new characters. Weird Al's character shows up a lot, EVEN IN THE MOVIE! But he doesn't every say anything.
In the newer seasons that came out after the movie, they actually mention the movie's plot and how it even added the hippogriffs to the show with us learning more about their culture and life style
Years ago there was a kid at my school who didn't want to say dumbass (since we were kids) so he "censored" dumb (by not saying it, just like syncing) and then said ass
You forgot to mention the couple of adult humor jokes that was in there (and yes, there were at least two, possibly a third depending on how your mind works)
Anyone else think it kinda weird that Pinkie gave that big speech to Twilight at the end and not Rainbow? (Hopefully people who have seen this already know what scene I'm talking about so I can avoid spoilers). I mean, she IS the element of loyalty. ....Or does that not matter since this was a non-canon movie?
That reminds me, a TV ad for Sailor Moon toys pre-MLP:FiM had the tag line "Saving the day threw the power of Love and Friendship" its as if girls aren't supposed to solve things threw violence while boys aren't aloud to use there words. Have you ever seen the formula flipped ?
Yes, actually. Steven Universe, Avatar TLAB, La Leyenda, Moomin, even Adventure Time in its later seasons, etc. All are shows with male leads who solve their problems primarily with compassion and words rather then violence.
well in shonen anime like one piece ans fairy tail, the power of friendship tends to be a pretty big part of it's theme and in case of fairy tail it's almost like mlp in levels of frienship is the most powerfull force in the universe and greatest thing ever... of all time
Avatar TLA and Korra still had a greater number of action scenes as well as feeling more balanced. Not targeted to any one gender. Adventure time also has a lot of moments where Fin strait up kills a thing. I did notice Finn struggling to kill a monster after the death of Fern . I know in Star Trek we see friendship and diplomacy in use a lot. Kirk said a few times that its Spock and McCoy's friendship that saved him and that he values. Picard was good at diplomacy too. but a lot of shows like TMNT, Thundercats, He-Man, Batman are more aggressive. Yes Spider-Man and others do have there moments of pro-friendship but mostly they do go the way of violence. or in the case of say Smurfs , the shows targeted at both genders. where as some thing like care bears or littlest pet shop doesn't have a reputation for being violent. Come to think of it Miraculous Ladybug and DC Superhero Girls High both do good jobs of showing a show targeted to girls where the female heroes use there physical attacks quite a lot. I suppose we both have examples of either side.
Anime is culturally different form American cartoons so its hard to compare. I know I said Sailor moon and could easily call DBZ a male targeted show leaning heavily on violence and the counter with Pokémon and Digimon being more in tune with feelings while still being violent as well, but there's some thing about anime when it gets adapted to American that things get changed around. Even my "Love and friendship" quote for Sailor moon was how the advertisers wanted the toys to be perceived. I have no clue if the actual series ever used that quote. So perhaps this topic is more on the toys then the series. Come to think of it I hardly ever see a girls toy with the ability to shoot projectiles or a boys toy with the ability to do its hair and make up, change its cloths and accessorize it.
There's love and friendship in most things Sailor Moon. Though the usual response to evil is ultimately violence. And if not by fire, water/ice, wood/lightning, metal/light, time, ocean, wind, or making the entire galaxy self-destruct, it's usually combining powers in friendship or love that horrifically kills evil. Like how the love between Super Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask melted an ancient evil moon queen's face off in the manga. Or how everyone besides Saturn combined powers to wreck a living galaxy trying to eat the Earth so badly from the inside out that he was crippled into paralysis, yanked out of the Earth and stranded in orbit, and left begging to return to his home so he could DIE OVER THERE instead in the modern musicals (FYI, Saturn did that in the manga and Crystal anime completely on her own). Overall, Sailor Moon is kinda hardcore.
Animation: 10/10 Story: 8/10 Characters: 10/10 Execution:7/10 Music:10/10 Voice Acting:10/10 Comedy:9/10Overall, MLP The Movie is refreshing eye candy that made my eyes glued to the screen, wanting to learn more with a good chuckle with AMAZING CHARACTERS and I LOVE THE MUSIC!, but the execution could be better and the story is a little(just a little) predictable.9/10
Kinda I think they met that they will bring the lore in. Like as in the location and new races we saw in the show. DOn't know about the characters as they need to replace them with VA that not only matches the characters but matches their voices too.
(1:51) Ah, but it WAS mentioned in the actual series. And not just in a one-time, brief throwaway acknowledgement; the events of the movie actually permanently effected the entire world of the show, and was the basis for the beginning of the entire arc of the eight season. In one episode they even go back to Mt. Eris: the entire episode focuses on the the newly freed hippogriffs, with the conflict revolving around how some of the hippogriffs (now that they'd been freed and no longer need to hide) don't want to revert back to their old forms or leave the water, and instead want to remain in their aquatic forms and continue to live in the ocean. But I was really surprised by this as well, and had also initially been sure the movie would be a non-canon, self-contained adventure. But nope, the entire movie is 100% series canon. I thought it was awesome how much the movie bled over into the show, such a nice change
This movie is what I expected and while it has its flaws, I think its the best experience I had in theaters. Really its just so amazing even if my theater is run by families which is nice. Also Cell they aren't gonna forget the movie at least in terms of the characters as they said they will bring in all the lore from the movie to the series which makes the most sense.
AnimeWolfgamer "Experience in theaters". I had a good time too. It was amazing to finally see everyone on the big screen. I had a nearly packed house. But I'll NEVER forget the loud gasps and dead silence I heard when Twilight delivered *THAT* line to Pinkie and how the scene unfolded afterwards. You could hear a pin drop.
idk, I had fun watching it' it's not a huge grand fantasy adventure film like Castle in the Sky or April and the Extraordinary World, but I thought it at least knew what it wanted to do. So many animated films this year like DM3, Cars 3, and Batman & Harley Quinn didn't know what they wanted to do, and yet, the MLP Movie, is the one that had the most consistent tone. I think you were a bit nit picky, but your criticisms towards the animation not gelling well with CGI is on point and Storm King definitely needed more to do or time on screen. I think it's way better than DM3 since DM3 doesn't have infuriating wasted potential. camstheothersideofanimation.wordpress.com/2017/10/12/the-other-side-of-animation-103-my-little-pony-the-movie-2017-review/ (shameless plug inserted here for my review for anyone curious)
Not gonna lie, DHX did have an alternate opening scene before the title that establishes the world and Twilight as a princess. I think that would've helped with the first few minutes.
I kinda enjoy it. Yes, there were some flaws, but so do a lot of films, even Disney does some flaws, and I thought most of the music, including Sia's is great.
I really appreciate your mix of funny and serious review you always do. And in another note: I kinda expected you were gonna do this review with your Pony OC... kinda odd.
***SPOILERS*** I was actually very surprised by this movie for two reasons....one was Twilight's character arc. Not that she's an over-achieving perfectionist who wanted everything to be perfect....I expected that. Not that she relies too much on the other Princesses magic and not enough in herself....I expected that too and I think that's why they were taken out so early in the movie. This had to be Twilight's journey and she had to face it without the help of her fellow Princesses. No, my surprise came AFTER that....Yes, she is indeed a Princess, but I felt like Twilight's role as the Princess of Friendship was challenged more in this movie than say in the Tirek episode, because we saw a different side of her....one that didn't TRUST HER FRIENDS AT ALL. When Tempest removed the other three Princesses from the game, Twilight feels she is essentially left completely on her own to fix the problem and that terrifies her. She's not in control anymore and she feels like the fate of Equestria is on her slim purple shoulders. Rather than trusting her friends to help her through the problem this time, every single time she has an opportunity to act, she tries to fix it herself (which fails) and then she gets really angry at her friends and abandons them (which completely shocked me) and it isn't until she realizes where her true power lies that she's able to come into her own as a Princess. I do agree with you that Tempest is one of the best villains we have seen on the show thus far. I really liked her motivation and I feel like I would have liked the movie MORE had she been the primary villain and didn't have to share the limelight with the so-called "Storm King" who wasn't threatening at all. As soon as I saw him I knew she was just a pawn to be manipulated. The animation actually surprised me in how creative the new worlds were and I did like the cat character.
I assumed girl cartoons focus on "friendship" as a theme was to move away from previous generation's girl cartoons focus on romance and relationships, which in the current day is often thought of as sexist. *shrug*
Ivan Corredera I mean, the villain in this movie literally died and the one chick was attacked by a bear so I think a pg rating is deserved for the most part.
Well the storm king did get shattered so that's a little off putting. Plus it was a bit unsettling how the princess turned to stone and then there was that creepy mole man.
Also, there's that fact that Spike got all but confirmed kills on two Storm King minions (Spike burned one that had him in a headlock and was not seen again when he ran off; another got completely covered in fire, fell unmovingly, and didn't get back up while the other minions managed to run away just fine).
"And I love the decision to let this film take it's own time and move at more dramatic gradual pace where so many other films feel like they need to move rapidly at a million miles an hour every second." I'm sorry, what!? The pacing in this film was HORRIBLE! We barely get to know any of the new characters or locations before we're moving onto the next location. It's like the writers felt like they needed to get through this film as fast as possible to keep the audience entertained.
I disagree. (granted im very lenient and non picky) I feel like the pacing was okay. I do wish we got to see more of the new characters in the show as well.
CellSpex has not stated her opinion on Winnie the Pooh (2011) which deserves to be extremely positive. She just said "Shut up" because she found out that there are a few hand-drawn animations that exist today to prove her wrong, even in American cinema with that film I mentioned in the comment.
That movie is so sadly forgotten from the new renaissance. Sandwich between two more memorable Disney films. People constantly forget how WtP (2011) was really the last 2D Disney, not PatF.
"An adventure that is entirely self-contained and will never be mentioned in the show." The movie has already been confirmed to take place between Seasons 7 and 8, and is alluded to in the Season 7 finale.
Just a note, Idk how much of this will come back in the future but the movie is confirmed canon with the series, supposedly takes place between seasons 7 and 8, and will have at least some things from the movie actually appear in the show. So there is that. I will be sad if we don't see Fizzlepop Berrytwist in season 8. XD
"And will be never ever mentioned in the show ever" Hilarious in hindsight, seeing how much the Movie was mentioned in Seasons 8 and 9, with some characters even appearing.
I wish they hadn't 'updated' the animation. It would have been much better to use the style and program they were used to and just polished it to perfection. It would have been interesting to see the time and money wasted on trying to fix something that wasn't broken allocated to other areas. The movie probably would have had far fewer weaknesses. It comes off feeling like it has first episode weirdness.
I liked it- but also I agree w u, it coulda done better, but at the same time I get that well, it expected the parents to be there along side the kids, and there might be new ppl, so it makes sense. But if they make a 2nd movie, I rly hope they give Discord and Fluttershy more limelight? :-3 idc as a couple or not (/maybe a lil tho) but just more air time??
That sounds about right. I put the movie at a 7/10 as a fan of the show. I was frankly expecting it to be a lot worse than it was, so I was pleasantly surprised. As for criticisms, in universe the Storm King just was not a big enough villain. The only reason that he even got as far as he did is because of the main six conveniently forgetting that they are allied with an entire legion of Dragons and Changelings who would gladly take up arms for them at a moments notice. Yes you need the new toys and celebrity cameos, but it's a pretty glaring oversight that they didn't even try to explain why they didn't go to their nearby allies for aid first.
Hey man, Cadance was the only useful princess. When Tempest attempted to capture the royals she was the only one who reacted and attempted to defend herself.
I understand why one wouldn't want this to succeed, but with the death of the 2D animation studio at Disney, and with us getting NOTHING since that Winnie the Pooh movie, I REALLY want this movie to do well enough to get this animation style brought back. I HATE seeing EVERY animated movie in the CGI style. I mean, don't get me wrong. I don't hate all CGI movies, but other than How to Train Your Dragon 1&2, Zootopia, and a few Pixar movies(they're not gods, folks, deal with it), I can't think of a SINGLE movie in CGI that has left a truly lasting impression on me. The ones that really stick with me were mostly done in a time when we were still getting at least ONE 2D animated film a year...And since then, the animated films that really made me "ooh" and "ahh" at the animation ALONE were claymation. There's a sense of heart and passion in big-screen 2D animation that I just don't feel anymore...And I know this is silly, but the MLP movie actually made me well up a bit just for that reason. I haven't felt that much love and heart in an animated feature since Para-Norman...I know full well that it takes a LOT of hard work to make a CGI film, but it doesn't make me FEEL that in the same way 2D and stop-motion animation does. I know Laika has the occasional movie, but it's not enough to sate my need for that kind of feeling. I know all of this may sound "art-snobbish" or something, but it's just how I feel. I am so tired of animation in movies leaving me feeling...I don't know...hollow? It's not really the right word, but it's the only thing that I can think of to describe it. It just feels like something BIG is missing from animated movies these days...
Actually this movie is being acknowledged by the series itself, yes I know you probably didn't see that coming because you made this video before the next season started, but my guess is this movie was so successful for Hasbro that they had to make sure everyone knew it was cannon with the tv series
At least in the movie it felt like half of the characters were MAIN characters that were needed for their own character and not just characters that were there so Twilight had friends. I really missed the individual boost Twilight friends had in season 1-4. It really just got more and more about Twilight after season 5
Were is their friend, you know the kinda ultimate demigod of chaos. Discord! I kinda hoped he would be in the end watching the whole thing eating popcorn and say something like. Well that was fun, still they could have given me a call
Compared this to the 1986 G1 original movie, the original 1986 version wasn’t a bad movie, but it was a cute little movie, but this one take it to a whole new level. This beats the original 1986 by a nose.
Now that I think about it where was Shining Armor and Flurry heart. The spell was that they needed 4 alicorns right. Why didn't they go after Flurry Heart and steal her magic. And why couldn't Shining Armors shield spell keep out the storm Kings men like it did with the changelings.
Honestly, they messed up Fluttershy's character as well. She takes care of animals, and some of her jokes were based on her being afraid of animals. "Lions, and tigers, and bears." "Oh my..." Buddy. She tamed a Manticore in the first 2 parter of the series. Couldn't Rarity have said it? And the scene where she's afraid of the bats in Capper's song? Or when she makes fun of Pinkie for being rambunctious? In conclusion; Not my Fluttershy.
I really enjoy "Open Up Your Eyes". We need a more darker tone to villain songs now. Most villains this decade who does get a song is not powerful enough (the tone of the songs I mean).
Discord probably wasn’t in it so maybe that’s why.
plus that one time she comforted that monster. that was cute
There are several 2D animated wide-releases planned actually, the Teen Titans Go movie next year, the third SpongeBob movie, the Loud House movie and the recently announced Bob's Burgers movie
i think they mean more of "hey i want Disney, DreamWorks, Pixar, and Laika to make big budget threatrical animated films again" and not just these films based on TV shows
Pixar's bread and butter has always been the 3D stuff, and, as far as I know, Laika only does stop motion.
Exactly!!!!!
Chanelle Lee it surprisingly did not do well in the box office. What the fuck bronies!
Spike gets 8 lines and used against his will as a flamethrower twice: the Movie
I will grant the first time was against his will, but during the climax he appeared to be more than willing to do so.
To be fair, Spike had a huge part in setting up Twilight's rescue and he netted two legit kills. So I think it evens out overall.
mayborneflower My Little Pony The Movie has a kill count. That sounded weird saying.
Top Ten My Little Pony Deaths.
1. Sombra
2. Storm King
3. Storm Minion #17
4. Whoever was married to Granny Smith.
5. Guard Pony #2 from episode 1
6. Storm minion #82
7. Storm minion #6
8. Storm minion #19
9. Guard pony #1 from episode 1
10. Spike (Sombra timeline)
Against his will? I’m pretty sure he was OK with it.
Maybe he just stays as a sorta hero?
the art book kinda goes into detail about stuff that was cute. fluttershy would have befriended a fish and aj would have got her own scene to shine 2
@@William_Millar What are you talking about?
My nit pick with the movie is "TWILIGHT, YOU CAN TELEPORT!!!"
Teleportation has it's limits.
I was thinking the same thing but onlyu with Luna when she decided to fly away instead of teleport away.
There’s no way I can move fast enough to grab him, get out, and-
... *POP*
Did...he just remember he could do that-
Your father’s an idiot.
"The one where the pre-teens get their periods" I FUCKING LOST IT
Jere'jack Lover OC-chan I would like to know which was the one with Patton Oswalt and the "Talking about Star Wars"?
Could we not get Discord showing up with a throw away line like :
"Alright, now I'm off on my vacation my little ponies! Don't get invaded while I'm away!" before proofing outta existence?
Then have him show up at the end with a tan everywhere but where his sunglasses are like:
"Oh! Almost forgot to pack the sun scree-
Heeeyy! Whose the girl with the broken horn?"
This made me laugh way too hard 😂
that would kinda raise more questions than answers. he wasnt needed if hes liked
1:52 Should... Should we tell her... or... Should we leave that as a surprise?
Noah Maldonado I think it’s because in the show capper, novo and sky star, and tempest (also I wouldn’t say tempest is in the show they just mention her not show her)
Noah Maldonado could you tell me what episode(s)
Noah Maldonado okay I’ll watch it now thanks!
Noah Maldonado also in the episode where celestia and Luna take a vacation you can see capper in the background
Noah Maldonado also I got the name of the episode now the episode with capper is Between dark and dawn S9 EP13
"Could have been better, but overall rather decent." Just like first Equestria Girls movie, then.
No, EG was far worse.
BlueTeller Pretty much. At least Rainbow Rocks and Friendship Games were really well done sequels.
How dare you compare a decent movie to a way less decent movie! >;0
I like that one!
EQG doesn't stand against this one lol
Theatrical movies based on TV shows is not an inherently bad idea. Look at A Goofy Movie.
Calliope Pony we just need more movies like the goofy movie lol
Too bad the next tv series based movie will be Teen titans go sadly as like the goofy movie too.
There was also the Dofus movie based on the Dofus TV series.
th-cam.com/video/5Xbh8a8zxEY/w-d-xo.html
Moral - gotta pay attention to Europe.
MAYBE LOVE IS THE REASON WHY!! FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, WE'RE SEEING IT EYE TO EYEEEEE!!
"What is it with little girl's media and friendship anyway?"
Answer: Statistically, women tend to have stronger social interaction and cooperation skills than men. Toy companies like statistics and studies that they can gear toward a large demographic to sell stuff. This is why we have "boy's toys" and "girls toys."
And you didn't even mention Tempest's song which is, by far, the best song out of the movie?
I think it's the most emotional song, but I could never say which is the best. I love all the songs equally.
YEEEESS!!
Strong agreement here! it captures so much. it justifies Tempest's motives for not believing in friendship, and that it can't fix everything.
Its not
It had some pretty weak lines, but it’s still a pretty good song
Mlp the movie is a film that is a decent flick for fans but just OK for those who never watched mlp in their lives.
tempest shadow is based off me[8 years]...
never knew that.
Wait, what’s the difference between “decent” and “OK”?
Ok means that neither bad or great but in between.
The movie wasnt bad. if it had been " bad" it wouldnt of raked in 35 million dollars.
While I agree with a lot of your points, I do hope there's at least one sequel.
Considering how much better Rainbow Rocks is compared to the original Equestria Girls, I like to imagine if the MLP movie had a sequel it would also improve on a lot of things compared to the first movie.
Well... We got the My Little Pony generation 5 movie
Was anyone else annoyed with how much screen time Pinkie was getting and how little Fluttershy got?
Jay Sherard You Seem Tense. Do you wanna talk about it?
Daniel Attrell one scene, that was her only seen to shine. The rest of the movie she says like 2 words every 10 minutes.
No I love Pinkie.
Jay Sherard yeah, I do wish her and Applejack got more screen time. but I still really enjoyed the movie.
My inner-10-year-old-self is gasping and wanting to draw comics of them so badly.
check it out if you want. its a fun flick
I saw a leaked episode of season 8 and omg the movie IS CANNON
Is there any reason why you didn't review this in pony form?
@WithOpinions I thought so, too, but I still would've preferred the pony form for everything MLP-related, series or otherwise.
Not least because her pony form is prettier, because it IS an actual form. ;-)
she didn't want to give her audience aids...
Delcos Mann, what...?
Well... That was uncalled for.
you mean cancer?
I didn't like that the Storm King was barely in the movie. He was talked about a lot, but he didn't appear until the finale. Even worse, the voice actor described him in a way that we didn't see in the movie. I think most of his scenes were cut out for time constraints.
The mlp following is a curious phenomenon. It drives me to investigate.
Have you already been to www.equestriadaily.com? Or maybe you can take a gander at this playlist...
th-cam.com/play/PL-nHkO0lLyUWxxe-y1SJX7tEIlAaOjJyN.html
... that I created of what I believe to be stand-out fandom artwork. Just providing venues for your investigation.
The pysch student in me thought the same thing when it came out, and I wound up becoming a brony.
I definitely support doing independent investigation. Probably start with any of the episodes mentioned in the first minute of this review, or the very first episode of the show. Decide for yourself if the show is for you, and if it's not, that's OK, too.
derpibooru has the biggest gathering of them i think.
It's just a genuinely good show with cute and funny ponies doing slice of life things and learning lessons about friendship.
And sometimes it goes all action/adventure or introduces some really cool story elements and fantasy lore to keep you interested.
Cellspex: These characters will never be mentioned here in the show
MLP Staff: Let’s Mention the whole Movie in the next season
I don't think Perfect Pear is that moving if you aren't into the show already.
"The one when the preteens get their periods."
When did that happen?
"Will never ever be mentioned in the show ever." And then it gets mentioned in the first 30 seconds of the season 8 premiere.
Movie was decent. songs could've been better. Animation is good. I give the movie a solid 7
TheBlackGamer I feel it's a 6
TheBlackGamer But "Open Up Your Eyes" and "Rainbow" were absolutely lovely.
Btw apparently this movie is indeed canon as it supposedly takes place between Season 7 & 8, also some of the orchestra music is gonna be carried over to season 8 and we getting a new sea pony character for Season 8 (plus who knows what else)
My top 3 favourite animated movies of the year so far:
1) The Lego Batman Movie
2) Captain Underpants
3) My Little Pony The Movie
Daniel Attrell agreed
Most enjoyable animated movies I've seen this year.
...this year hasn't really been pretty great for animation, has it?
well, yeah, we have the Emoji Movie. Lego Batman has set the bar so far in the sky that even the birds can't get close.
Daniel Attrell Mine exactly except the pony movie a little higher
can't really say that i agree. the most enjoyable movie this year so far for me is Rock Dog.
"Anime filler movie"
No truer words were spoken.
I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like this is pretty much what I was expecting. Good enough to be entertaining, but not even close to re-igniting the spark of the earlier seasons.
To be fair, I think that Season seven already acchieved that for me.
It's a little better than Equestria Girls 1, but not on par with Rainbow Rocks. IMO.
7 is good? I kinda fell off early season 6 as I found 4 was meh and 5 was bad by mlp standards.
Also, wait I got nothing to say...
I liked that song the best too.
thats the thing the movie was played in 75% of speed rather than the normal 100%
PaleoSteno I guess you don't...
...
....... digg it.
Yup. Capper was my favorite character
no cap
Lesson zero is a good starting point because it's early in the series, but anyone who watches those episodes you recommended first are going to wonder
Why the purple one has wings now, but not earlier
Why said purple one is only one of five with wings and a horn
What a cutie mark is
What the cutie mark crusaders are
what a cutecinera is
Actually, just everything from that episode
What Daring do is,
Why the Rainbow one likes it so much
Why her, and the book character know eachother
Why the book character is real
Why we should care about these characters learning about their parents, If we don't have the build up of at least a few episodes to know them, it doesn't work.
For a first episode, I'd recommend:
Dragonshy
Swarm of the century
Winter Wrap up
All of these are a great starting point for the series, because they establish Twilight as the main character, all include her friends, and some great showcases of those characters, and they're all great episodes.
Might just see this movie for Diggs
Siesta Song Me, too.
Killing off the main characters? Hasbro did that 31 years ago and, oh boy, did they get hate for that.
This is late as heck but, what characters did they kill off?
@@lilelectricbunnyuwu6418 in the 1986 Transformers, released by Hasbro, movie? Megatron, Starscream, Optimus Prime, Prowl, Ironhide, and a dozen or so more.
@@tristanmilner9511 Ohh! You had me thinking they killed someone off in the G1 my little pony. xD
Sorrowful Cheshire You kinda missed the entire point of Tempest's character if you really boiled it down to "wanna be unicorn again" tbh.
I heard that the new characters in this movie are gonna appear in the show in season 8 and beyond.
Considering how many times we were all wrong when we declared that a character will never be mentioned again, I'd say this is highly possible. Just don't expect them to have many talking appearances, celebrity guests can be pretty expensive.
LostInNumbers Indeed they are.
True. It would have to be a scene where something big happens and it doesn't require them to speak as they see from the crowd.
In the newer seasons that came out after the movie, they actually mention the movie's plot and how it even added the hippogriffs to the show with us learning more about their culture and life style
You censored the word "hole"... OK
Pedro Wafflecone 8:21
*You are right*
Pedro Wafflecone That's actually common with TV censors too. They will leave in "Ass" , but censor "Hole".
"He's an ass*bleep*!"
"Ass? Hole? Ass*bleep*! ... Censoring is weird."
Years ago there was a kid at my school who didn't want to say dumbass (since we were kids) so he "censored" dumb (by not saying it, just like syncing) and then said ass
One word for the Teen Titans Go Movie.......AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!, WWWWHHHHHYYYYYY???
Captain Jazz Isn't that two?
Rebellious Robot oh yeah, derp
call me crazy but this doesnt look to bad. at least were getting more tv theathrical movies
Even if That Teen Titans Go Movie got good reviews, I'm Not Watching it, because after all these years, I already had enough of it.
@@RebelliousRobot Oh yeah, point still stands
According to rumors the characters from the mlp movie will be in season eight and beyond of friendship is magic
Yeah, and Novo is going to have a story arc in the comics. So the assumptions that it's gonna be one and done filler are thankfully dashed.
Kinda I think they met that they will bring the lore in. Like as in the location and new races we saw in the show. DOn't know about the characters as they need to replace them with VA that not only matches the characters but matches their voices too.
Not sure how they'll pull that off. Celebrity voices are expensive.
+Pelcogo (Damian Frost) sound-a-likes. that's what they originally planned for discord after all
Shadow Storm
They better be.
I thought it was awesome how much the movie bled over into the show, such a nice change
i know that the movie is far from being a great movie but I FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE
Same.
@@RYMAN1321 I have to admit when I watched THAT scene, it brought me to tears.
idk, I had fun watching it' it's not a huge grand fantasy adventure film like Castle in the Sky or April and the Extraordinary World, but I thought it at least knew what it wanted to do.
Owen Muller+ Your opinion anyway. (I'm not a Brony)
Agreed
In the moive there is now a Goofy Pluto paradox, because Capper is a human like cat, but rarity's cat, opal is a pet cat...
2017 has been a pretty weak year for animation, so this movie (for me at least) was a breath of fresh air.
Katie Lewis "Your Name" was pretty great too
AleqsH+ It's Overrated. also it has the weakest reception despite this is for you high core fans.
And Blade Runner 2049
6:16 "And [I] realized that 'One Small Thing' is clearly a love ballad"
I was wondering why I was shipping Pinkie and Skystar so much.
I really appreciate your mix of funny and serious review you always do. And in another note: I kinda expected you were gonna do this review with your Pony OC... kinda odd.
"All of this will never be mentioned in the show again"
Season 8: *"SIKE"*
*shrug*
Can someone please explain to me why this movie is rated pg for ‘parental guidance’. Is the g rating dead?
Ivan Corredera I mean, the villain in this movie literally died and the one chick was attacked by a bear so I think a pg rating is deserved for the most part.
There's also a scene where a guy threatens to skin the ponies alive and then eat them..
Well the storm king did get shattered so that's a little off putting. Plus it was a bit unsettling how the princess turned to stone and then there was that creepy mole man.
The last time I saw a movie advertised as Rated G was in 2009. So, I'll say, yes, it is effectively dead.
Also, there's that fact that Spike got all but confirmed kills on two Storm King minions (Spike burned one that had him in a headlock and was not seen again when he ran off; another got completely covered in fire, fell unmovingly, and didn't get back up while the other minions managed to run away just fine).
FYI, the movie is in fact canon to the show. One of the leaked episode for season 8 even returns us to Mt Aeris and Seaquestria.
When was the last time Cell talked about MLP?

"And I love the decision to let this film take it's own time and move at more dramatic gradual pace where so many other films feel like they need to move rapidly at a million miles an hour every second."
I'm sorry, what!? The pacing in this film was HORRIBLE! We barely get to know any of the new characters or locations before we're moving onto the next location. It's like the writers felt like they needed to get through this film as fast as possible to keep the audience entertained.
I disagree. (granted im very lenient and non picky) I feel like the pacing was okay. I do wish we got to see more of the new characters in the show as well.
Don’t be dising the 2011 Winnie the Pooh movie I love that movie
CellSpex has not stated her opinion on Winnie the Pooh (2011) which deserves to be extremely positive. She just said "Shut up" because she found out that there are a few hand-drawn animations that exist today to prove her wrong, even in American cinema with that film I mentioned in the comment.
That movie is so sadly forgotten from the new renaissance. Sandwich between two more memorable Disney films. People constantly forget how WtP (2011) was really the last 2D Disney, not PatF.
"An adventure that is entirely self-contained and will never be mentioned in the show."
The movie has already been confirmed to take place between Seasons 7 and 8, and is alluded to in the Season 7 finale.
The Teen Titans Go movie announcement is both infuriating and unsurprising.
When I first heard this I was mildly upset, but now I’m just sitting in a corner and questioning reality ;-;
There's going to be a Teens Titans go movie?where did you find that out?
Instagram. Heck, just google it!
a d Please speak english
In season 8 it’s actually mentioned in the FIRST EPISODE AND THROUGH out the entire season
Hey CellSpex, what did you think of the Hanazuki short before the movie?
If she does not answer, it means she only watched the "4-Chan Leak" ! (because the Hanazuki short is still unavailable on the internet)
Or maybe she just missed this comment.
Oh man, that 8-bit theme you used in the beginning gave me flashbacks of something that should stay unmentioned
XD
9 months?! Why does time move so fast?!!! I mean i remember seeing the poster in theaters saying "coming soon"
Cellspex:"one small thing is clearly a love ballad"a
Cheesecake shippers:ARE U SURE ABOUT THAT?!
"And will be never ever mentioned in the show ever"
Hilarious in hindsight, seeing how much the Movie was mentioned in Seasons 8 and 9, with some characters even appearing.
"this year has been crap "- CellSpex 2017
hoo boy, just you wait - 2020
Oh boo hoo, just you wait 2023
I wish they hadn't 'updated' the animation. It would have been much better to use the style and program they were used to and just polished it to perfection. It would have been interesting to see the time and money wasted on trying to fix something that wasn't broken allocated to other areas. The movie probably would have had far fewer weaknesses. It comes off feeling like it has first episode weirdness.
I liked Capper a lot more than I thought I would.
Me too.
I liked it- but also I agree w u, it coulda done better, but at the same time I get that well, it expected the parents to be there along side the kids, and there might be new ppl, so it makes sense.
But if they make a 2nd movie, I rly hope they give Discord and Fluttershy more limelight? :-3
idc as a couple or not (/maybe a lil tho) but just more air time??
Patchwork StiltFox Especially THAT scene with Twilight and Pinkie. Damn, the feels were strong there.
"I kinda hope this fails"
No, this NEEDS TO succeed! I want to see more theatrical 2D animated films!
Screw the TTG movie, just don't go see THAT one
Celestia, Luna and Cadence where completely useless as usual.
Actually this movie is being acknowledged by the series itself, yes I know you probably didn't see that coming because you made this video before the next season started, but my guess is this movie was so successful for Hasbro that they had to make sure everyone knew it was cannon with the tv series
1:53 well that didn't age that well.
Right!? In fact, this movie is pretty much the reason the first arc of season 8 began lol.
“Crazy Eyed Bismuth”
I see what you did there.
Yep, just as I predicted. Twilight Sparkle: The Movie, featuring some other characters.
At least in the movie it felt like half of the characters were MAIN characters that were needed for their own character and not just characters that were there so Twilight had friends.
I really missed the individual boost Twilight friends had in season 1-4. It really just got more and more about Twilight after season 5
SHE MENTIONED SONG OF THE SEA!!!!!
3 groups
normals - 6/10
fans - 7 or 8/10
crazy fans - rule 34/10
Craig Bartley I'm a fan and I'd give it a 6. Not all fans enjoyed it.
November this is what I call a *JOKE*
Booooo, 4/10.
well I give up ignoring you for now on
Craig Bartley, this is what I call a JOKE.
Were is their friend, you know the kinda ultimate demigod of chaos. Discord! I kinda hoped he would be in the end watching the whole thing eating popcorn and say something like. Well that was fun, still they could have given me a call
thank would have been awesome!
WHY NO MENTION OF THE VILLAIN SONG!?!!!?!?!
thespeedyyoshi that song has become a meme
Sailor Sedna Shouldn't that be a good thing? A strong Villain Song?
I really enjoy "Open Up Your Eyes". We need a more darker tone to villain songs now. Most villains this decade who does get a song is not powerful enough (the tone of the songs I mean).
She didn't care for that one.
To be honest, Ninjago also has an issue with speed.
You in my opinion, are one of the best MLP reviewers on TH-cam.
tempest shadow is based off me[8 years]...
When was she an MLP rewiewer?
She reacts to episodes of this show and she's a analyst.
Lonely Fanboy48 shes a movie rewiewer, not a -bronie- ponie rewiwer
Never mind
I believe that Temptest was actually mentioned in a Season eight episode.
I really liked Capper too! I think his name is capper?
