What's funny is it seems all the knives everyone craps on about being weak stick tangs (like the Kabar, Buck 120, etc) end up taking surprisingly more abuse than the whole fleet of usual, much more expensive, full-tang survival knife options out there. 🤔🙃
I can't get over how well both the Kabar and Buck 120 tips lasted intact while something like the Fallkniven A1 tip just crumbled.
Granted, I never plan on stabbing vehicles and smashing cinder blocks with any knife ever but surprising results none the less.

The tip stabbing tests are a bit of a hybrid test of toughness and edge holding. Edge holding to avoid rolling, toughness to avoid being simply getting smashed away. Those laminate ones are just the VG-10 at the tip. It doesn't last long at all with the very low toughness - it smashes away entirely as the knife becomes 1/16" or even 1/8" shorter very quickly. Meanwhile the stainless has a fair bit more edge holding than the most basic and toughest almost mid-carbons like 1055 or 5160. So the stainless doesn't get folds as much as they do. So the few tougher stainless out there like 420HC tend to be champions of the car and rock stabbing sections.
The Kabar is the same story. Their carbon-V clone lands in a similar enough spot to something like 420HC in the sense of being reasonably tough enough and with some actual edge holding over the most basic nearly mid-carbons which are tougher. (Why they down-sell themselves trying to confuse uninformed consumers into thinking they use something that is just their own spin on 1095...the power of name recognition in marketing I guess.)
So the next time someone calls Joe X tests only about toughness, remember: It is more like 90% toughness. He does a couple things that partially serve to check for edge rolling too (stabbing and chopping), and that is partially governed by edge holding.
Also this is a good example of how 3v isn't quite entirely hyped junk. This area of testing is the part those knives have obliterated the competition at - as should be expected since it is about toughness and edge holding here. Even the worthy of launching a meme with how badly it failed overall 3v tanto impressed Joe in this particular part, with minimal edge and tip damage after both the car and hacking through a thick section of antler.

I picked up a Buck 120 in the military when I was a scout. I needed something for the field to strap to my LBE. It was sharpened razor sharp which made the smooth handle that much more scary. I still have the knife. It was never meant for the rigors of abuse in your video, but it survived several trips to the field and a few deployments. It's still razor sharp.

Nobody provides a better service to those looking for an excuse to buy a knife than Joe X. My first fixed blade knife was a Buck Fisherman. I was actually fishing in Alaska, took the knife out to deliver the final stab to a red salmon, dropped it on a rock sideways and the tip broke off about 3/4" down. I was so depressed about it. It was a Christmas gift from my dad when I was just 12 years old. I had a negative view of buck knives for many years because of that experience. Fast forward 30 some years and Buck finally (I've been watching their products for years) started producing the same knife designs I always loved with S35VN premium steel.
Now, thanks to Joe, I am going to replace that knife I lost so long ago, only this time with the Buck 119. That was a very impressive test and way more abuse than it will probably ever have to endure. I know many have said that it has long been a favorite hunting knife, but with that blade design and hilt, it would no doubt double up as a great fighting knife for self defense. I'm sold. Thanks Joe X.

With that thin narrow hollow grind blade, it's pretty much the lightest fastest 7 inch fixed blade you can buy that's not a piece of shit. If you only use it for what it's designed for like General cutting purposes such as carving up deer carcasses or fighting bums on meth, it should last you the rest of your life and still look good. Besides the slippery grip, if you need a lightweight longer knife you can carry all day, it doesn't really get much better.

"Before 1981, the specially heat treated stainless steel used was 440C, and from 1981 to 1992 the company used 425M steel. Since 1993, Buck has mostly used 420HC stainless steel for Model 110 blades, although CPM S30V steel has also been used for some production runs."
