I'm feeling that Oberyn Martell was on a completely different level than most of the fighters in Westeros
Totally. He used Speed and Finesse. While Westeros fighters rely on heavy armor/shields and often time brute force
And he was also a skilled Knight, being able to defeat Loras older brother in a jousting match even tough he was a great Jousting Knight (House Tyrell has a story of producing great Knights, Loras himself, on the books, is considered the best Jousting Knight of his time, even at a young age)
I think that only Jaime with both hands between the living at that time could stand a chance against Oberyn in a fair fight, since Jaime is also strong and fast, and was considered the second best swordsman alive, losing only to Barristan Selmy.
Barristan would be a great match too, but i don't know if he could match Oberyn speed since he is far older, however we must not forget that he is one of the greatest Swordsmen alive, he is a living legend compared to the likes of Daemon Blackfyre, Aemon the knight of the tears, Cregan Stark And Arthur Dayne, the sword of the morning and the greatest fighter of the seven kingdom. So he would stand a chance, even if he is old.

I loved him. say whatever you want , but he was strong , iconic and KIND AF. He was a good man. A HUMAN. I loved the way he talked to Tyrion, the way he fought for his sister, the way he simply was. I loved him. still love him. will always do.

His death still haunts me. His screams as he gets his skull crushed is the only death that disturbs me. He was one of my top 5 characters and I can't see his death again, it's to disturbing.

What I loved most about Oberyn is that he did not just want revenge. A bit of poison on his blade would've been more than sufficient for that. No, he wanted justice, true justice. To hear Gregor Clegane confess to the murder of his niece, Rhaenys Targaryen, who loved to play with her cat, Balerion. The murder of his nephew: little Aegon, who would've been the sixth of his name. And the rape and murder of his beloved sister: Ellia Martell, a loyal wife and a loving mother, to the very end. For the entire court to hear, from the mouth of their killer, that Tywin Lannister, the Lion of Casterly Rock, had given the order to murder an innocent woman and her children whose only crime was being of the Last Dragon's heirs.

@Alex Ramsey He was so much filled with rage. Anyone would. The who raped his sister, murdered her, killed her children is in front of him. He wanted to give as much pain as possible.
@Alex Ramsey Even when Gregor admitted the rape before killing Oberyn, it was rumoured to be enough to seriously shake Westeros' faith in the Lannisters. The confession did mean something, and I feel like the Mountain really did die that day anyway. So Oberyn's death wasn't completely in vain, and Tywin died only a night or two after this too. From that bittersweet perspective, Oberyn won
@GOD If the mountain would not have confessed, Tywin could’ve not been proven guilty. He should have trued to make him confess, but he shouldnt have let his eyes off the mountain

I think Oberyn is one of the best characters in GoT, due to his philosophy, his desire for revenge and his prowess in battle. Also because he hates the Lannisters. I was hoping he would die less brutally...

Once his blade touched the Mountain's skin the battle was already over. He was clouded by vengeance and rightfully so. There is no justice in the world of Game of Thrones.

Say what you want, but the real reason Oberyn was killed was because he was too much of a threat to the storyline - he was simply too good a character.
Driven and vengeful but also just and kind. A very intelligent, politically-minded man, with a sharp wit, to the extent that he could hold par with the likes of Tyrion and even Tywin to some extent. An expert in poisons and weapons of varying kinds and a deadly fighter - he took down The Mountain. Even though he died there, the fact remains that he had The Mountain flat on his back first, and was the reason for his eventual death anyway. Not to mention he has a sense of humor, is very attractive and a complete badass in pretty much everything, with a depth to him you wouldn't expect from a typical side character.
Oberyn Martell was killed off because he was too good of a character. Because GRRM had plans for the storyline ahead already, and he knew Oberyn could've fucked them all up had he been left alive. He just wasn't the type of character GRRM could leave alive, or push to the sidelines in order to further the story.

As an older brother, I completely relate to the sheer unbridled rage Oberyn feels towards the Lannisters. Pedro Paschal played him perfectly and I really wish we got to see more of him. It's such a shame we only got one season of this charismatic badass.

He didn't deserve to die at all...but what to do...it's GOT...When You Play The Game of Thrones, You Win or You Die...He was a True Brother, A Loyal Lover, A Caring Father & A Proud Martell. My favorite GoT character, This character really inspired me so much (besides the unfortunate end). To never give up and go with your agenda.. Altho it's just a fictional character, I react to him as if he was real, and for me, it really felt like he was real. R.i.p Oberyn aka The Red Viper. P.s: Great video and tribute. I MISS THIS GUY!

One of the most charismatic character of the series.
I don't normally criticize the decision to kill off characters in GoT/ASOIAF because part of what makes it great is that it's unpredictable. But this one was a mistake. We didn't get to see enough of Oberryn and he could have been integral to the plot, while the Mountain is a useless ass of a character.

The Mountain is integral to the Hound's story. He cannot be killed by anyone else.

The scene of his death was something that I still couldn't watch up to now; he was magnificent but he fought a brute whose only advantage was size. Also, his emotions caught up with him and he lost focus. Never fight angry.

This is really beautiful! I really loved Oberyn and his story was so sad because his family suffered for what Rhaegar did. But at least he's with his sister and her children now.
He shown so brightly. His only flaw was his own arrogance, and not knowing desperation. He deserved to live. Someone who's entire life goal was to avenge his sister? Beautiful.
This is a brilliant tribute. Oberyn has been an idol of mine for years. Everything about the character, his story, his history and this portrayal is epic.
By far one of the best characters in game of thrones, its a shame that he died for the right cause, but this video honors his memory :)

I would have liked to see an alternative suite for Oberyn. The mountain is defeated ... And Oberyn has to maneuver to kill Tywin. Like Ned Stark, Jaimie Lannister, his actions would have changed the Westeros we know.
Valim The Red Viper Oberyn is my favorite character in all of game of thrones. Although his heart burns with anger and revenge for his sister, he is extremely calm. So attempting to kill tywin after the dual wouldn’t happen. We see his true self control at the brothel scene and when tywin confronts him.
There is a theory (mostly based on books) that Oberyn would have poisoned Tywin Lannister. There is a "terrible smell" coming out of Tywin's corpse when he has only been dead for a few hours. It would be the work of a poison. Would Oberyn have calculated everything and ensured his revenge, even post-Mortem? I think so. We do not wait 10 years to kill someone without refining their plan. @@blocksixx2101
Valim The Red Viper I read the theory awhile back after I posted that comment, I very much believe it now. If he poisoned the mountain, he probably poisoned tywin. It also seems like he was in the bathroom for some time soooo some sort of poison that ruins bowel movement.

I'm so sad the show didn't give him proper justice.
He instantly became my favorite (still living) character when he appeared in the books, but most TV only fans never got to love him, heck. Most didn't even come to like him because he didn't get as much time. Same with the rest of the Sandsnakes, in the show they just appear out of nowhere. Get next to no screentime. And everyone is hating on them. When they are amazing.
Kolur Laxdal disagreed. They did Oberyn Martell well enough and he is very much loved for his as you said limited screen time. Rest of Dorne was a mess though.

Such an underrated and yet extremely badass fighter and a good man he was. One reason I say this.
Because he had a conscious unlike the Lannister’s and Bolton’s plus despises rape and the killing of children. Prince Oberyn was a fantastic character played by Pedro Pascal. I hate how he died. He was awesome and had great lines. It seems like the good honourable fighters die way too soon. At least Jon came back to life.
Prince Oberyn, Ned Stark, and Robb Stark were too good for Game Of Thrones world.
I truly don’t blame his hatred towards the Lannisters. So awful and sad what happened to his daughter and the Dornish children’s. But at least the Gregor sacrificed himself to kill his own undead brother. At least that counts.

Years later, I still think about this GOT character, and this scene. Aah! Lol. Powerfully written scene, powerfully acted, beautifully directed. So weird that one character on a TV show has had such impact on people. Right? Yah know, in the GOT prequel coming up, I think it would be glorious if they resurrect the character Oberyn Martell. Somehow. And, don't kill him! Lol. This is an example of the power of good storytelling. 🙂

A man who wanted revenge for no other reason than their murders were just wrong and senseless. Nothing about honour or for the sake of the family name.
