  • In this video, Eli discusses the Allison series transmissions: the AT545, the MD3060, the Allison 2000, and the MT643. These are the most common transmissions found in school buses. He will also be discussing details for our current transmission swap from the AT545 to the Eaton 5-speed manual. Bell housing sizes and how they differ will also be covered and how to measure SAE1, SAE2, and SAE3. Eli also touches base on a useful conversion company: CAConversions.

I tried to make it as entertaining as possible, but hopefully this video gives you some insight on the Allison series transmissions or some useful information for a transmission swap. Please feel free to add any information in the comments below 👇🏼 and remember: I am not a professional

Hey buddy you shed so much light I had to put my welding hood on😊 oh, one thing you didn't mention was how would a person identify which transmission they have? Most of these people selling buses they don't even know which way is up😢.

Oh yeah! I hope it’s an auto darkening mask!!
There are two great ways to identify what type of transmission it is, the shift knob & the tail-housing of the transmission. Considering you are not in person to see the tag on the left side of the unit. These are two photos to request when purchasing and is a great recommendation for a new video!
Basically, if the tailhousing is a whole cast it’s the AT545.
If you see a dozen or more bolts holding the tail shaft to the housing, it’s a more desirable transmission. MT643, 2000 series, 3000 series.
I can send you photos of each if you email us at parishskoolie@gmail.com

I cannot tell you how helpful this video and your trans cooler video has been to me! I worry constantly about my At545 mainly because of the hate it gets online. I have driven up and down mountains, trails and highway, for 3 summers with no issues (besides slowness lol). I just checked my fluid using your tips - it's red, no burnt smell and it did not burn my skin, happy days! I do want to install a cooler so will be looking into that. Again, thank you so much for your clear explanation, covering it in such detail easy enough for non mechanics like me to understand. YOU ARE THE BEST!

I've been following along for awhile now, nice work on the swap. I have a flatnose Bluebird and I'm researching options. You mentioned that a manual transmission cannot be swapped into a flatnose, cabover semis would beg to differ. I can't find any information online, so it looks like I will pave new territory and document my journey. Your information provided here is invaluable. I will now be looking for an Eaton Fuller 7spd vs the 10speed I had originally planned

So happy to hear you’ve found value in our content. It sure is frustrating to do mechanic work & film at the same time but you should absolutely pave the way with your flat nose!
You are also right about cab overs, in the year since filming this I’ve had the pleasure of driving and working with a cabover. There are a few transmission options in these cabovers that are shifted by cable. The one I’m familiar with is Eaton’s roadrunner series but it’s just as wide of not wider as 10, 13, 18 speeds. My concern is it fitting between the frame rails.
We have a 7 speed Eaton fuller for sale here in Alice, TX. A used take out

Nicely done! It's so good to hear a voice of reason regarding the maligned AT545. Absolutely, it's not the most desirable...the lack of torque converter lockup wastes some energy, creates some extra heat, and reduces (almost eliminates) engine braking effect...but they are common and well built and can serve well, if taken care of.
Don't forget the MT653, if you can find one. It's just the 5-speed version of the 643. Both are great transmissions.
And, one addition to the mention of the MD3060 (or the 2000s). Most do indeed have pushbuttons, which is a good way to identify those. But we've also bought school buses with MD3060 transmissions that have a manual shift lever. So, we advise shoppers to not immediately assume a manual lever means a less-desirable transmission. Look for the little red LED indicator square next to the shift lever...which an AT545 or an MT won't have.
Thanks for putting this video together! Liked and subscribed.

@@austinpowers82484 It’s always ups and downs. Turning wrenches is a part of this life, we are over 3 years now due to this process of getting discouraged and handling mechanics! When you get to see mountains behind the wheel it’s all worth it.

Great video and I'm impressed with you taking the time to research like you did. I have a AT545 in my 1991 with a Cumming BT6 12 valve. I haveonly put around 75 miles on it and that was driving it to my shop from the seller so I do not know the condition of the 545 other than the fluid is dark collored smells but not so much " burnt ". My plann is to of course add an external cooler after the radiator and then to the external filter on the side of the 545.. Next I am going to take the pan off , change the internal filter and fill it with PAO pure synthetic fluid to get the protection and it will also keep the 545 cooler than styandard fluid would. Then I will puit around 50 miles on it and drain , change both external and internal filters then fill with new PAO fluid so I will have gotton most of the old fluid out of the torque converter . I feel good about doing it this way what do you think ?

    • @parishskoolie
      @parishskoolie  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks for watching and commenting with your compliments! I have heard from many mechanics than a complete flush in a mechanical transmission is not ideal.
I would first run an oil analysis to see what excessive metals are present.
Change your external & internal filters and keep on rolling. I would not recommend dumping again after 50 miles. I can’t tell you why old school guys recommend this method, but my assumption is the conditioners & cleaners in “new age” oils will strip the residual clutch material away quicker.
Change your filters and keep that baby cool. Should last a long time!

Allison MT 653 is a 5 sp with a "granny low" so with a higher differential gearing you can effectively have a OD transmission, a least when it relates to engine RPM vs road speed.

Love the video it was great I learned a lot I have a 85 international with Detroit 500 V-8 diesel 545 Allison. so this bus has 96,000 original miles. The transmission has been perfect except for I had it idling while loading all of my belongings to leave my property and start traveling. and went to move the bus and it would not go into gear. shut it down. checked everything everything seemed fine. linkage is moving fluid perfect not burnt super bright red no metal shavings in just looking on my hand. doesn’t smell burned. cranked the bus up again went directly into gear didn’t think much else about it just thought something weird happened concerning but. went ahead and tried to leave went through all of the gears and then started up a hill and would not pull. Will not go into gear at all any gear until you shut the engine off let it sit then it will go into whichever gear you put into first if you pull it back out of that gear while it’s still running it will not go into anything else and will not go back into the previous gear. The temperature that day was about 100° outside the engine never overheats it was running about 160. i’m dropping the pan in the morning. i’m a little bit stumped I do know the internals of the transmission but I never have rebuilt one. I and I definitely do not have the money to pay for rebuilding one. if there’s anything you can think of that this may be please contact me .
maybe Facebook or messenger I check every once in a while (Marc Marine)

another nice thing about a manual gearbox is that you can shift down and take youre foot of the gaspedal and use the engine to slow the bus on long downhill slopes , saves you overheating youre brakes
as for the electronic transmissions : even if there stand alone tcm they still need some info from the engine , things like trottle position rpm and maibe boost vacuum , some of these it can get from the trans itself but theres a big chance it piggybacks some of the signals from the engines sensors
hmmm figured the engine to trans mounting plate on the engine behind the flywheel was wat you needed to transfer to youre other engine , to make another size bellhousing fit , at least thats wat i seen on DEBOSS GARAGE , the guy often thinkers with diesels and changes engines in all sorts of tuff from a dodge pickup engine intoo a dozer to an chevy ls in an audi quatro , might be usefull to watch some of his stuff as its verry out of the norm stuff and he has some verry ingenious solutions to things
the burned transmission fluid smells like burned electric components / circuitboard , if you ever released the magic smoke on sumting electronic you know the smell

There's a step-down ring sometimes installed on a SAE2 flywheel housing that allows the SAE3 Allison bellhousing to bolt to the assembly. You have to use the appropriate adapter / spacer that allows the Allison torque converter to bolt to the engine's flywheel / flex plate.

I was bummed to find out my RPMs weren’t effected with the extra gear. I was doing 2400 @55mph. Now doing about 50-75rpm less, it seems like bigger tires will make all the difference. I pulled the rear chunk out, but after doing the math it won’t be worth it. Our bus now has 4.66 and the donor bus is 4.33

If I'm not mistaken the final drive ratio is still 1 to 1 in the non overdrive transmissions.
Fortunately my AT545 and the T2000 are nearly the same size for fit, and the step van platform
was designed with lots of room to work.
Actually I'm tempted to just find a wercked Chevy 2500HD with the Duramax / Allison combo and just transplant the lot.
The only real difference between the T1000 and T2000 internally is the gearset is angled for quiet operation in the T1000 and a T2000 has a straight gearset for a very slight power advantage.

Thanks for watching bud! I’d say it’s safe to assume you have the AT545 at this ratio. It’s not unsafe to run on the highway at that RPM but I would not consistently run 4+ hrs at this speed. I run my 5.9 Cummins at 2300rpms consistently @60mph now.

If you want to know the shape of your transmission send an oil sample in and have them do an analysis on it.
The lab results will inform you as to approximately how much longer the fluid has to it needs to be replaced and if there's any abnormal contamination in the fluid don't forget to change the filter on the transmission, as many have a independent filter mounted near the side of the motor and some internal transmission filters are actually filters and some were screens so consider replacing that as well.
Allison also used two types of transmission fluid one of them was a 390 something in the real synthetic one was a 296 so you need to research that when making the tranny swap also as the lower number is the real synthetic that is a lifetime fluid other than replacing the spin on filter.
And Allison transmissions have many number series and some came with a close ratio and some with a wide ratio. I prefer the 2500 series if your GVW is under 30, k, if it's over that go for the 30 60 with the retarder if you can set that up you'll never need to use your brakes until you're sitting at the light.

My dilemma is my 545 still works it's in a 95 Freightliner with a 5.9 second gen over 3.76 dif spinning 225/70, 19.5 tires.

I have one here in Alice, Tx and two others in Houston Tx.
If a manual isn’t something you want to deal with maybe the HT740, it’s fully mechanical and used for heavy duty application. Moral of the story, go HD instead of medium duty.
