My father bought this album when it came out. I remember listening to it when I was little and you've inspired me to get into music. I now play guitar and know just about every song of yours. Keep it up Ben.
Been a fan of Ben Harper since 95, my sophomore year in HS, his music has meant so much to me, especially this album, forever is my favorite songs of all time
I think this is the Ben Harper we all love and that we always come back to when we need a bit of peace. This is chilling, this is marvelous music. Thank you Ben.
I have been in love with his voice since I was 16. He's amazing, and I will always have his music nearby. I got very sick when I was 19, and lost all of my memory of lyrics. "Walk Away" was the first song I re-taught myself, so I owe Ben many thanks to bring me back to music after such a long, arduous recovery.
What an amazing song. I've actually been listening to it for maybe 25 years now? His family is incredibly talented, including his brother Peter, who is also a musician and amazing.
I've been a fan of Ben since this album came out. My first time I saw him live was at the Coach House in Cali back in 1995! Wow! Can't believe its been 20 years. I want to thank you Ben for your music, lyrics and your voice. For it has helped me, guided me, and inspired me for two decades. Keep it coming brother. You continue to blow our minds and hearts with your music. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.....
First saw Ben at The Georgia Theater in Athens GA in 1996, tics were $5 in advance and $7 at the door. I have been a fan ever since the first time I was introduced to this album in 1994 and continue to find inspiration and positivity from his words and melodies. I was lucky to see him at Carnegie Hall last year on his solo tour and his performance there brought me to tears. His music has been like a soundtrack to my adult life. Keep doing what you do, Ben - you have and will continue to inspire me and so many others with your talent and passion for music.
It was 20 years ago when a dear friend and I had the good fortune of catching Ben Harper perform live as the opening act for Sam Phillips in SF. This was about the same time Sam Phillips released “Martinis and Bikinis” with T. Bone Burnett by her side, and they shared the same label, Virgin. Serendipity prevailed, and Ben was there to open. At that moment, we had no clue what kind of magic was in store for us. He had his original band with him as I recall and performed most if not all of the songs from WTTCW. Needless to say, he filled that room with awe and wonder. I’d love to see a video release from that show because that music became the soundtrack for some amazing moments in my life, and I’m sure millions of fans have come to feel the same. So very grateful we got to see him as he was on his way to a brilliant, honest career as a solo artist, with fantastic bands, and collaborating with artists who’ve got the goods. Ben Harper still has got the goods. Long may he run!
Ben being born a Grateful Dead kid I never really imagined an artist could touch me in as powerful way as they did. You are part of my HUEman experience and I can't imagine my life without your music filling the air. Through sadness and joy you are there! BLESS YA!
I bought this cd shortly after it came out, and saw Ben live at Richards on Richards in Vancouver in 1996. It is still in my top 5 concerts of all time - a small, intimate venue, amazing music, and the gracious manner that Ben still to this day carries with him on stage. I remember how amazed he seemed that we all knew the words to the songs. I introduced my young daughters to his music a few concerts later, and they grew up listening to each successive album, blaring out of the loudspeakers, the three of us with huge smiles on our faces. Thank you Ben. Still a huge fan........
I was born in 1994 and have all of Bens' records at home, this album was the first I heard of Ben when I was about 10 (thanks mum for buying the record). I appreciate Ben so very much and give thanks every day for the inspiration he has given me. This is amazing, long live Ben!
been a fan since '95, first time i saw him live was at the Vox, Nonantola, Mo, Italy, small club, in the end we got autographs and shake hands...Time files Cheers Ben !
His overall respect for music, in it's stripped down form is what makes me such a fan. I'm so happy he's been able to continue to share himself with us.
Mistakenly brought The Will to Live Cd In the 90's looking for and artist I've seen on PBS . Since then... I've been a Ben Harper fan . Never found that PBS artist. I was looking for in the beginning . I believe it was meant to be. Cheers Ben for your music and inspiration .
This album has changed my life ever since I had it in my hands 5 or 6 years back and it continues to do so just about every day. Thanks for the great music
20yrs & I've been listening for 10..Keep making great music & I'll keep listening..I always thank whatever god is in the sky that I found your music..You've done so much for me through your lyrics that you'll never know..
superbe video deja 20 ans que l'album est sorti et je m'en lasse pas de l'écouter c'est l'album le plus acoustique de sa carriere et ou il y a le plus de weissenborn j'espere qu'il en fera un autre avec les memes base que cruel on the world
WONDERFUL to hear BEN HARPER's direct Explanations behind to his inspirational #Craft and Magical PERFORMANCES. Thank You your musical Genius and Gifts, #Ben Most Appreciated!
when I was young and living in the city some friends and I took a bunch of mushrooms and left to head into the city for the night. As we were sitting in the bus stop waiting for a bus it was raining and cold and waiting for a bus to go to a bar seemed so cruel. I thought why would I want to go into the city right now, so I told my friends I wasn't going to go into town with them, I walked around the suburbs for a while as the mushrooms came on, in the rain it was beautiful, all the trees were so alive, I could feel nature conversing all around me. As I got home I made a space on the loungeroom floor and put on some music, what came on was this song, the Live From Mars edition. I had the most deep and profound journey with this song on repeat, it felt like I was inside the emotion found when making this track but it also sent me on a reflection of life and this world we live in, I was shown the cruel world that always is and always will be but it's also just one side of the making. I felt the cruel world sitting at that bus stop, I was shown it through this song. As I came to, I had a big notepad in front of me scribbled with drawings, words and faces which when I look at it now I can't make any sense of it but the understanding/emotion all floods back. This is such a powerful song am I am so grateful for coming across it
The first time I heard you sing was the 2007 video 'Fight Outta You'. After seeing you in the video, and hearing your enchanting voice, I bought all your music which was available in that music store. Your music is most certainly very inspirational, filled with deep thoughts and a helluva lotta soul.
love this album. it's been a fave for 20 years. i used to get to every show when you came to NYC back in the 90's. the was first at Grace Church in Brooklyn, NY and you opened with not fire, not ice. all the best for another 20 years.
This is so meaningful for me, I'm listening to it on the anniversary of my daughter's brain death and being found with a group of people in suspicious circumstances of the later cause of her imminent death 7 days later. She was 33 and had 4 children.Wed been to Ben's concerts and loved his music. She lived in Claremont.
I've been following you since 1998... I saw you 7 times... This song and this album are so good. I miss The Innocent Criminals, Are you gonna record a new album with them? Cheers, Romain
"New ways to say different things or different ways to say the same old thing. Either way, both have their strengths and merits." Love that.

Don't know how
We've lasted here so long
There must be more good than bad
Or we'd already be gone.

My favourite BH album. It's been cruel from the beginning and it will be cruel till the end.
