One of the best parts about this movie, in my opinion, is that everyone was sort of right. Doss was right that he should be allowed to serve as a medic without a weapon, and proved to be a hero in that role. The military was right that he could pose a danger by refusing to be armed and refusing orders to carry one (in their minds) undermined discipline. Other troops were right that his unwillingness to take life for his comrade suggested he was above them, or at least not one of them. Instead, the film showed the value of higher laws, both human and divine. The Constitution’s protection of the right to go into battle unarmed meant the founding principles of American life arbitrated that court martial, not two credible arguments. The natural law of combat, and the fact Doss was willing to go where others feared to tread on behalf of his comrades overrode his unwillingness to carry a weapon for those around him. Sometimes we may enter a situation where opposing sides are both right, that’s why we have to arbitrate via higher and established laws and principles.
